Chapter Text
Author's note
Since this fic is quite complex (and long), I decided it may be worth collecting all the most important information in one place, just in case — especially since, for better reading experience, I've split it into parts, all belonging to the Heimr Árnadalr collection.
It'll be in 6 parts, the first one being the introduction, and the last one serving as a kind of an epilogue. Each of the remaining 4 should correspond to an element, and be called after a certain spirit in Northern Sámi (if I can trust online dictionaries with that).
The canon I'm regarding in this fic, is only the first Frozen movie. The plot happens 3 months after the end of the film.
The Frozen II plot serves only as a starting point; I'll make use of it wherever it's convenient for me, but the word 'retelling' seems more and more distant with each passing chapter. I won't be taking the shorts and other media into account — this story takes place before FF and OFA — but there may be some references to them.
Changes I've made to the original film(s):
- Names. Even though Elsa will be the most commonly used form of her name, it's short for Elisabet. I've also changed Runeard's name to Rúnar to have it sound more Scandinavian. Iduna's birthname is Idun — she goes by Iduna anyway, though.
- The royal families of the Southern Isles and Arendelle are related. Elsa and Anna and Hans and his brothers are third cousins (which would't provide any obstacles to marriage); their grandfathers were brothers. Ingvar became king of the Southern Isles, and his younger brother Rúnar took the throne of Arendelle — previously a territory dependent on the Isles. Also, Rapunzel is Elsa and Anna's cousin; Queen Arianna is King Agnarr's elder sister. All the members of the royal families not mentioned in the films/other official sources, are OCs.
- Arendelle is a constitutional monarchy, which means Elsa has both a government and a prime minister, and in the period from the death of Agnarr and Iduna until she came of age, power was held by a regent — Lord Peterssen in this case. No random dignitaries rule the country just like that.
- Firearms exist, which slightly changes the flow of the scenes in the Ice Palace and the finale in the fjord; both Hans and the soldiers had pistols, and instead of swords and shields — sabers at most. Additionally, ice harvesters were present on the North Mountain, just like in Broadway.
- Trolls, kinda.
With the exception of the five points above, I try to stick to the movie's plot as closely as possible.
I'm also ignoring the obvious fact that I'm expanding the castle staff and the topography/geography of Arendelle and the surrounding areas.
Besides that, I'll try describing and explaining all of the plot twists as logically as possible, so that they result naturally from the plot and not my whim (like point 5). I'll try to clarify any possible ambiguities in the author's notes.
Enjoy reading! ♥
