Work Text:
Evan keeps a level head until they are given the all clear from the alleged disease and the ER is no longer catching on fire. As soon as he can he patiently and politely asks Boden if he can stay behind with his husband, bracing for Boden to tell me that he has to finish his shift. He would do it if he had too, but he would hate every second of it.
Boden can tell that the kid is trying his hardest to keep it together but the more time goes on the harder it is for him to keep up with the mask of being unaffected. He allows Evan to stay behind at the hospital since their shift is close enough to being over, with the condition that he keeps them updated, which is readily agreed upon.
Once shift is over, Casey, Shay, Boden, Mouch, and Herrmann all make the trip to the hospital to check on their boys, they find Kelly half awake running his fingers through sleeping Evan’s hair. Kelly notices them and gives them a small smile but his entire attention is on Evan as he begins to stir awake.
Evan is unaware of the others standing outside of the door, the only thing he can see is that Kelly is finally awake. “You're awake” Evan says, his relief palpable. “How is your pain? Do I need to hunt down April?”
“No need,” says April as she weaves her way through the small crowd outside the door before pointedly asking Kelly about his pain.
“It’s mild for the time being,” Kelly says while never looking away from Evan.
“Good, I have to say you chose your husband well, so well that I might be a little envious. He has been in mother hen mode ever since things got squared away in the ER. Not to mention he has had to politely turn down various nurses that couldn’t catch a hint.” She says with an amused smirk when she got rewarded with snickers from Casey and Shay with her commentary
“Well, I only have eyes for him too.” He says to April.
“You don’t say,” Matt says with a big grin on his face.
“Shut up, Case I didn't ask for the peanut gallery's commentary.” He says grabbing Evan’s left hand and gently squeezing his hand when he notices that Evan is wearing his wedding ring.
“Baby, were the nurses giving you such a hard time that you had to put on your wedding ring?” he asks with an amused smirk before pressing a kiss to the knuckle just above the wedding band.
Evan huffs a breath and runs his other hand through his hair, he looks tired even if he was just napping. “Kind of, I hoped some of them would take a hint, then I took to ignoring any of them that were not April unless it was about your treatment. But it also somehow gave me a tiny bit of peace, especially when I remembered part of your proposal speech, “We fight together, you and I against all our problems, instead of against one another”. It’s the only thing that kept me from losing it when I was stuck outside without a status update on you, you self-sacrificing idiot, knowing that you were fighting to be with me just as much as I was fighting to be with you.”
“I am sorry for being a self-sacrificing idiot, I will work on doing less of that, I promise.” He says cupping Evan’s face to establish eye contact before he continues. “I will always fight to come back to you, fighting together, forever and always baby,” Kelly says before pulling Evan in for a chaste kiss, as if he was sealing his promise. It was one of many promises that they would make together, as time comes and goes more promises are made, others are revised, but most importantly they strive to keep them.
