Through New Eyes

Summary:

James notices Snape is kind of beautiful…

Work Text:

James Potter took pride in his ability to notice things that others overlooked. It was a skill he often bragged about with a confident grin—predicting McGonagall’s detentions by the subtle twitch of her eyebrows, or catching Lily Evans’s discreet glances when she thought no one was looking. James considered himself observant, always aware of every little detail around him. Or at least, that's what he'd believed.

Yet somehow, in the midst of his sixth year, James found himself blindsided by a realization that unsettled him deeply: he'd never truly noticed Severus Snape.

Of course, he'd seen Snape countless times before—who hadn’t? He was impossible to miss, always skulking around the dungeon corridors with that greasy black hair obscuring half his face, pale skin perpetually shadowed and drawn into a scowl. To James, Snape had always been simply "Snivellus," nothing more than a moody shadow lurking on the edge of his consciousness, the frequent butt of jokes and pranks shared gleefully with Sirius. Snape was easy to dismiss, easy to ridicule, a mere inconvenience in his daily routine.

But today felt different.

Sunlight bathed the grounds of Hogwarts in a warm, golden glow, finally breaking the monotony of a particularly dreary winter. James and his friends had settled comfortably beneath their favorite sprawling oak near the Black Lake. Sirius was enthusiastically detailing his latest mischief, Remus listened with quiet amusement, and Peter clung to every exaggerated word. James, however, found his attention drifting, his gaze wandering across the sunlit grounds.

His eyes settled unexpectedly on a solitary figure by the edge of the lake. Snape.

James’s brow furrowed in confusion. The Slytherin sat alone, shoulders slightly hunched, utterly absorbed in a heavy, weathered book propped open on his lap. For once, Snape's hair wasn't simply a tangled mess; instead, it appeared surprisingly smooth beneath the sunlight, falling gracefully around his face and catching glimmers of silver in the gentle breeze. His typically grim robes looked almost elegant, draped loosely over his lean frame, the fabric reflecting subtle hints of warmth. In the sunlight, his pale skin had an ethereal quality, luminous against the backdrop of emerald grass and the sparkling blue lake.

James found himself sitting up straighter, inexplicably drawn to this unexpected sight. There was something different about Snape in this quiet moment, a stillness, a softness James had never allowed himself to notice before. His sharp, angular features, usually twisted into a mask of bitterness or contempt, were now calm, focused, almost serene. James watched, fascinated, as Snape's slender fingers moved delicately to turn a page, his dark eyes intensely following every line, completely unaware of being observed.

A sudden, shocking thought occurred to James: was Snape...beautiful?

The idea hit James with startling force, so bizarre he nearly laughed out loud. Yet, even as he struggled against it, he couldn’t quite dismiss the feeling settling heavily in his chest. Snape looked elegant, poised, almost graceful—qualities James had never imagined applying to the surly Slytherin. Something stirred uneasily in James's stomach, a fluttering warmth he couldn't identify and wasn't sure he wanted to.

“Oi, James,” Sirius’s playful jab startled him, dragging his thoughts violently back to reality. “Are you even listening?”

James jerked, his face instantly flushing with embarrassment. “Huh? Yeah, of course,” he said hastily, forcing a casual grin he didn't quite feel.

Sirius raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Mate, you were miles away. Daydreaming about Evans again?”

“No one,” James snapped quickly, nudging Sirius in a feeble attempt to appear unbothered. “Don’t worry about it.”

Sirius smirked, clearly amused, but let it go, shifting smoothly into a spirited debate about upcoming pranks and Quidditch strategies. James pretended to join in, laughing along as usual, though his thoughts continually drifted back across the lawn, secretly lingering on the unexpected enigma of Severus Snape.

Over the next few weeks, James found himself unable to resist stealing glances at Snape, even when he tried desperately not to. During Potions, his eyes were inexplicably drawn across the classroom, lingering on the careful precision with which Snape sliced ingredients or stirred a potion. There was a quiet intensity to him, a meticulousness James had never noticed before. Watching Snape work, his dark eyes narrowed in concentration, his movements confident yet understated, stirred something complicated and unsettling within James.

The library became even worse. James couldn't help himself; he’d catch himself staring, captivated by the subtle details—the slight crease between Snape’s eyebrows as he puzzled through a challenging text, the unconscious way his tongue flicked out to moisten his lips when he was deep in thought. James knew he was being ridiculous, but the sight was oddly fascinating, like discovering a hidden secret.

One morning in the Great Hall, Sirius elbowed James sharply, pulling him abruptly from his thoughts. “Why exactly are you staring at Snivellus?” Sirius whispered sharply, eyes narrowed with suspicion.

“I’m not!” James protested immediately, louder than intended, stuffing toast hastily into his mouth to avoid having to explain.

Sirius snorted skeptically but didn’t press further, launching back into a lively conversation about Quidditch tactics with Remus and Peter. James, however, barely heard a word. His thoughts drifted stubbornly back to Snape, and it wasn't just Snape’s outward appearance—it was everything beneath that James was beginning to see. The clever, biting wit hidden behind cold remarks, the quiet vulnerability beneath the icy façade, the moments Snape dropped his guard when he thought nobody was paying attention. The realization was unsettling and insidious, embedding itself firmly in his mind.

One crisp, autumn afternoon, James found himself wandering aimlessly down toward the dungeon corridors, his mind not entirely certain what he intended to do or say. Before he realized it, he was standing awkwardly in the dim hallway outside the Potions classroom, staring blankly at the stone floor as if it might somehow explain his own behavior.

“Lost, Potter?” came Snape’s cool, familiar drawl, slicing through the silence and startling James into turning sharply around. Snape stood a short distance away, his arms folded protectively, dark eyes glittering with suspicion.

“Er, no—” James stammered, suddenly feeling incredibly foolish. “I, um…I was just…looking for you.”

Snape raised a skeptical eyebrow, his lips curling in a faint sneer. "And why exactly would you be doing that?"

James swallowed nervously, the honesty tumbling out before he could stop it. “I was just thinking that...you actually look nice today.”

The surprise on Snape’s face was immediate, a flash of confusion crossing his usually controlled features. “Excuse me?” he said sharply, as though certain he had misheard.

James felt his face flush bright red, but he forced himself to hold Snape's gaze. "I mean it," he said quietly. "You... you look good. I just thought you should know."

Snape’s expression softened slightly into something unreadable, guarded but not unkind. “If this is your idea of another prank—”

“It’s not,” James interrupted quickly, sincerity filling his voice. “I promise you it isn’t. I'm just finally seeing things I missed before, that's all.”

Snape studied him silently for a long, charged moment, his expression cautious yet intrigued. When he finally spoke again, his voice was quieter, almost hesitant. "And what exactly are you seeing now, Potter?"

James met Snape's dark, wary gaze head-on, a tentative smile touching his lips. “Maybe someone worth noticing.”

James swallowed hard, his heart thudding almost painfully against his ribs as the words spilled from him before he could rein them back. “That you’re smart. Talented. And, well… kind of beautiful.”

Snape’s eyes widened in shock, his entire body stiffening as though bracing for an attack. For a tense moment, James half-expected Snape to draw his wand, to fire off a hex in retaliation. But Snape did nothing. He simply stood there, frozen, staring at James like he was a puzzle he couldn't quite figure out. His lips parted slightly, but no words emerged, only silence filling the air between them.

James’s cheeks burned hotter, suddenly acutely aware of how close they stood. He took a hesitant step back, his nerves frayed to breaking point. "Anyway," he said awkwardly, rubbing at the back of his neck, desperate to fill the silence. "I’ll, um, see you around."

Without waiting for a response, he turned quickly, practically fleeing down the corridor, his heart pounding loudly in his ears. He refused to glance back, yet he felt Snape's stare burning into his back, intense and questioning.

Snape stood motionless, watching James’s retreating figure with confusion swirling in his usually guarded eyes. His fingers tightened unconsciously around the strap of his bag, knuckles whitening. James Potter—the arrogant Gryffindor who’d tormented him relentlessly for years—had just called him beautiful. Severus felt certain it had to be some cruel trick, another humiliation in waiting. Yet the sincerity in James’s voice, the nervous softness in his expression, lingered in Severus’s mind, impossible to dismiss.

The sincerity in James’s eyes unsettled Severus more than he cared to admit.

Meanwhile, James practically fled back to the Gryffindor common room, his heart hammering in his chest. Sirius lounged comfortably on the sofa, his mischievous eyes immediately spotting James’s flustered state, while Remus sat nearby, his expression quietly observant.

“So let me understand this correctly,” Sirius began, a wicked grin already spreading across his face. “You just called Snivellus—Snivellus, of all people—beautiful?”

James winced, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Kind of beautiful,” he clarified defensively.

Sirius barked out a loud, delighted laugh. “Oh, Merlin, this is brilliant! Prongs, you've really outdone yourself this time."

“It’s not funny, Pads!” James snapped irritably, his pacing halting abruptly as he glared at Sirius. "I mean it. He actually is."

Sirius laughed even harder, shaking his head in disbelief, but Remus leaned forward thoughtfully, his gaze searching James’s face. “James,” he said gently, his voice calm and measured, "are you saying you… fancy Snape?”

James hesitated, his annoyance fading into a quiet uncertainty. Did he? It wasn't simply Snape’s sharp features or the surprising elegance he’d glimpsed; it was more than that. It was curiosity about the quiet intensity beneath the surface, the hidden emotions, the person Snape carefully concealed from the world. The desire to understand him was beginning to feel overwhelming.

“I don’t know,” James finally admitted quietly, sinking onto a chair with a sigh. "But…I think I might."

Sirius’s laughter faded abruptly into stunned disbelief, his playful expression shifting rapidly into a frown of confusion. "James, are you completely mental?" he demanded incredulously, sitting forward as if trying to decipher some hidden joke. "This is Snivellus we're talking about—the guy you've spent years tormenting. Have you completely lost it?”

James sighed in frustration, rubbing the back of his neck as a rare vulnerability slipped into his eyes. "Yeah, and maybe I've been an absolute prat this entire time," he admitted grudgingly. "Maybe I was wrong."

The room plunged into an uncomfortable silence. Sirius sat back, genuinely stunned, clearly trying to process this unexpected confession. Even Remus, typically so composed, watched James closely, surprise etched into his thoughtful expression.

“You truly mean that,” Remus finally murmured, his voice quiet but probing, searching James’s face carefully.

James met his gaze, nodding slowly, his voice softer than usual. “Yeah, Moony. I do.”

The atmosphere between the Marauders shifted subtly in the weeks that followed. James couldn’t shake the thoughts of Snape that invaded his mind, replaying their brief interactions, obsessively noting details he'd never noticed before. Similarly, Snape found himself unable to forget James’s words, his mind puzzling obsessively over every unexpected compliment. Whenever their eyes met across classrooms or in the corridors, a tension buzzed in the air—a silent question neither knew how to answer.

One evening, frustration and uncertainty drove Snape to confront James directly. He found him alone on the Astronomy Tower, bathed in the silvery glow of moonlight, a contemplative expression softening his usually confident features. The cool wind ruffled his unruly hair as he stared thoughtfully into the night sky.

“Potter,” Snape’s voice sliced sharply through the silence, making James spin around in startled surprise.

“Snape,” James responded, quickly regaining his composure, though his fingers tightened reflexively around the cold stone railing.

Snape stepped forward into the moonlight, eyes narrowed suspiciously. “What exactly are you playing at, Potter? Those words you spoke to me the other day—did you actually mean them?”

James swallowed, heart hammering uncomfortably in his chest. He steadied himself, meeting Snape’s piercing gaze without wavering. “I meant every word.”

Snape's brow furrowed deeply, disbelief etched across his pale face. “You expect me to believe that you—James Potter—find me...what was it you said? Kind of beautiful?”

James hesitated, the warmth of embarrassment creeping steadily up his neck. “Yes,” he said quietly, refusing to look away despite the discomfort. "I meant it."

Snape opened his mouth to retort sharply, but James quickly raised a hand, stopping him before the words could escape.

“Look, I know,” James said earnestly, vulnerability creeping into his voice. “I've spent years treating you horribly. I wouldn't blame you if you never trusted me again. But I'm trying to be different. Better, maybe. And lately, I've realized how incredibly wrong I've been about you."

Snape stared, visibly shaken, a flicker of disbelief and cautious hope warring openly on his usually composed face. "Why?" he asked softly, almost reluctantly, as if bracing himself for mockery.

James offered him a tentative smile, his voice gentle. “Because you're unlike anyone I've ever known. You're smart, talented, fierce, and resilient—even after everything you've faced. And... I admire that. I admire you."

The silence stretched between them, tense and charged, filled with unspoken questions and uncertain hope. Snape turned his head slightly, clearly struggling to process James’s unexpected sincerity. After what felt like an eternity, Snape finally sighed quietly, meeting James’s gaze once more, his voice carefully guarded yet lacking its usual venom.

“You’re an idiot, Potter.”

James's grin widened into something bright and genuine. “Maybe,” he agreed softly, stepping closer, “but I'm your idiot. If you'll have me.”

Snape rolled his eyes slightly, a faint blush coloring his pale cheeks despite his best efforts to hide it. “Don’t push it,” he muttered dryly, though the quiet warmth hidden beneath his irritation betrayed the depth of his feelings more clearly than words ever could.

James took it for what it was—a small but significant victory.
