Peace in the Moonlight: Alternate Ending

Summary:

Alternate ending to Peace in the Moonlight, Enjoy!

Notes:

I had this and the ending posted with Peace in the Moonlight from the very beginning of writing this whole thing, and I wanted to share this one with y’all too! It’s short and sweet so enjoy (after reading Peace in the Moonlight of course!)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hogan waited in the clearing, it was just after 10:15 so he had some time before the plane came and he started his journey to England. After this morning, he didn’t get a chance to see Klink again, but was glad he had a chance to say goodbye, just in case this was it. He waited with anticipation, every small noise in the nearby woods had him on edge, was it Klink coming to join him? Or was it a German patrol?

Hogan checked the time, it was now 10:25. He let a tear fall down his face as he realized Klink was not likely to join him. Being a career military man, Hogan understood why Klink couldn’t just up and abandon his post. Still, he had really hoped Klink would choose to come with him and it still hurt to know he might not ever see his beloved Kommandant again.

“Goodbye Wilhelm, sorry I had to leave.”

Just then, he heard someone whisper-yell his name in the woods. Hogan turned his head as he recognized the voice.

“Hogan!”

Hogan turned and saw Klink in civilian clothes running towards him. He let out a hushed yelp as Klink literally ran into him, knowing him down backwards, and they were both lying on the ground. Klink had him pinned underneath him.

“I almost ran into a patrol halfway here. I had to wait until they passed before I could continue. I had to believe you hadn’t left yet.”

Klink and Hogan got up from the ground and kneeled in front of one another. Klink’s held Hogan’s hand as he beamed at him.

“I- I thought you weren’t going to make it.” Hogan wiped a happy tear from his face as Klink traced the scar on his jaw. “But you’re here.”

“Of course I wanted to join you, and I’m sorry it took me so long to realize that. I couldn’t live with myself if I was the one who let our love pass us by.”

“You’re here now, that’s all that matters.”

Hogan wrapped his arms around Klink and kissed him passionately. He smiled against Klink’s lips as they both let happy tears fall.

“I’m so glad you’re here.”

“I’m glad I wasn’t too late, again.”

Hogan chuckled as he composed himself, but held onto Klink tightly. He couldn’t stop smiling even if he tried. This moment now made him forget all the horrors he had been put through with the Gestapo, with Hochstetter.

“What made you finally decide?”

“I couldn’t stand the fact that I may never see you again. I have no doubt in my mind you would put all your effort to find me after the war, but I didn’t want to wait until then. Also, I love you too much to let you go easily.”

Klink was almost cut off from the sound of a plane landing in the clearing. Hogan turned to Klink, shouting over the sound of the engine.

“That’s our ride. They won’t cut off the engine since we want to get going again before anyone else finds us. You ready?”

Hogan offered his hand to Klink, who grabbed it enthusiastically.

“Let’s go.” Klink smiled as he let Hogan lead him toward the plane. “Away from the Gestapo, away from this place. By the time they realize I’m gone and you went AWOL, we’ll be long gone.”

The two of them headed towards the plane, ready for the next adventure. Klink knew everything would be alright, as long as he had Hogan.

Notes:

I flip between Klink going with Hogan to England and staying at Stalag 13 so with Peace in the Moonlight I went with the more angsty ending, this one is pure fluff!
