Vault of Memories

Summary:

Thor, missing his brother Loki, recalls memories of their childhood stored in a magical vault created by their mother.

Notes:

Based on a Tumblr head canon that I had:

“I head canon that there is a way to extract and store memories (similar to Harry Potter with the Pensieve) and that Frigga has thousands of hours of footage of Thor and Loki’s childhood stored in a vault under the palace.”

Work Text:

Thor was missing Loki. He had died at the hands of the dark elves after saving his love Jane from certain death. He had died a hero and now he was gone. He was preparing to go in search of the remaining missing infinity stones, to retrieve and keep them safe out of harm's way. But before he went on his mission, Thor decided to take a trip down memory lane.

His mother, Frigga the Queen of Asgard, had kept memories of her children down in the vaults underneath the palace which were able to be played at any time whenever her or her children wanted. She originally did this to remind the boys how much they loved each other when they fought, but decided to continue doing it so she could see her babies at any time she wanted. Now she was gone and so was Loki, Thor was the only one who knew about these vaults and the memories they held. Down the stairs, through the doors, down passageways that many, even the most meticulous of maids were oblivious of. Eventually reaching a small abandoned wooden door. Through there held the most wonderful treasure of all.

The memories were able to be watched through a magical enchantment that could be performed by anyone who had access to those memories. They were stored in what looked like a book, each one categorised by age. The oldest ones on the very top shelves towards the left whilst the newest ones on the bottom right hand shelves. Thor picked one. An older one. One from when he was small, maybe around five or six.

He spoke the magical enchantment and the memory began to play.

“Loki, I need to go to school, my tutor will be mad if I'm late” A small Thor spoke. Loki, around a year in age, grabbed onto Thor’s leg refusing to let go. He loved his brother that was clear to see. Whilst he wasn’t exactly sure where his brother was going, he did know he was leaving and baby Loki did not like that. In fact when Frigga picked him up allowing Thor to go free, Loki started to tear up. “Buba,” Loki blubbed, attempting to say brother. Brother had been his second word after ‘Mama’.

Thor smiled with happiness at this memory. He remembered Loki being small, he remembered him as a baby but he couldn’t remember a time before Loki was in his life. He had always been there. Until recently.Thor didn’t like to think of that, it filled him with dread. Two of the most important people in his life had been ripped away from him so soon after each other. His Mother and his Brother went so soon after each other. Two people who he thought would have been there forever. He didn’t like feeling these feelings so he put on another memory.

He grabbed another memory off the shelf and spoke the incantation, the memory then began to play.

This memory was set at night. He was sleeping during a thunderstorm. Thor’s door crept open, it was Loki. “Brother, the storm is so loud,” loki spoke rubbing his tired eyes. Bang. A clap of thunder rang throughout the halls of the palace. Loki screamed and ran towards his barely awake brother. “Do you want to sleep here?” Thor asked, hugging his brother keeping him safe. Loki nodded and climbed next to his brother.

Loki settled down under the covers and snuggled up to Thor. He then fell asleep. “I will protect you Loki, I will always protect you,” Thor whispered softly to his little brother. He then hugged him tighter and drifted off to sleep.

Thor’s eyes teared up. He had failed his brother. He had broken his promise in the worst possible way. He could take no more. He hastily left the vault.
