Summary
The month they had spent apart—the month that Kamet had spent believing his friend to be upset with him over the betrayal—had made it clear to Kamet that his good-natured Attolian had very impolitely carved a space for himself inside Kamet's heart. At first, the space had been of a helping hand—a necessity to get out of a very bad situation. Then, it had been more—that of an appreciated security and something akin to a friend, but not really, for Kamet had still been playing on betraying the man. But somewhere along the way—perhaps, by the time Costis had emerged from the miller's well covered in flour and blinking owlishly—the space had grown, and began to impinge on Kamet's heart in a very real way.
