A Gift of Love

Summary:

Wade has a special holiday gift for Zoe.

Work Text:

Pairing: Zoe/Wade (Hart of Dixie)
Setting: post-2x10 Blue Christmas

“That was a big sigh for somebody who seemed so darn happy five seconds ago, doc.”

Zoe blushed on realising that Wade was right about how vocal she had been in her happiness, but she had her reasons for the sighing at least and didn’t mind explaining.

“I guess the point is I’m a whole new kind of happy right now,” she said, turning to lie on her side in the bed and really look at him. “Wade, what we had before, it was fun - I mean, really, it was - but now... I meant what I said about wanting us to be together for real. Boyfriend and girlfriend. A real relationship.”

“I know that you meant it, Zoe,” he told her, fingers gently moving her hair back from her face as he smiled at her so softly. “And I mean it too when I tell you that... that you mean the whole world to me. You honestly do.”

Leaning in to kiss him then, Zoe was surprised to realise Wade was moving away. She was about to call him on it, when he suddenly put up one finger, indicating to give him a second, then turned away to the nightstand. When he rolled back her way, he had a small wrapped gift in his hand.

“Now, this is kind of your Hanukkah gift and your Christmas gift too, you know, since you’re both and all.”

It was a strange way to phrase it, but Zoe knew what he meant and could hardly keep the smile from bursting off her face at the idea of his being so thoughtful.

“I mighta given it to you sooner, but with the way things went with us... Anyway, there it is,” Wade told her, pushing the box into her hands.

“Thank you.” Zoe nodded once, working on unwrapping the gift, hardly knowing what to expect from whatever was inside.

Wade was thoughtless enough to buy her tacky underwear once, and yet thoughtful enough to also have attempted home-made black-and-white cookies too. God only knew what he had got for her now, and Zoe couldn’t have anticipated what she found when she prised open the box in her hands. A gasp escaped her lips. “Oh, Wade.”

“Had a tough time getting that six-pointed star,” he explained of the necklace - a chain bearing two perfect gold pendants with a spacer in-between. “But George Tucker helped me out, you know, with his internet skills and all, then I got some real strange looks at the jewellery store when I asked the guy to put it on the chain with the cross...”

“It’s perfect,” Zoe told him, tears in her eyes that she couldn’t have stopped if she wanted to.

“Yeah, well, so are you,” Wade replied, looking more bashful than she had ever seen him before.

Handing him the chain, Zoe turned around, pulling her hair up off her neck, so he could fasten the necklace in place for her, which he did, planting a kiss on her shoulder when he was done.

“Looks good to me,” he said, when she turned around to face him again.

“Me too,” she agreed, glancing down, then up again to meet his eyes. “Thank you, Wade, and I’m sorry that you felt like you couldn’t give this to me sooner. We wasted so much time, and I know a lot of that was my fault-”

“Hey,” Wade silenced her with a gentle finger to her lips. “Like you said, we wasted time enough, both of us did. Let’s not waste anymore, huh?” he suggested.

Zoe nodded her agreement, leaning in closer as he did the same, their lips meeting in one more perfect kiss on a perfect Christmas night.
