Work Text:
“BWAH! That hot pot was sooooo good!” Thanks for helping me make it, Rin.
“No problem; I'm glad you had the idea.” Rin replied to the pink-haired girl sitting to the side of her.
“What should we do now!? Watch a scary movie? Maybe do a test of courage in the woods!?” Nadeshiko asked, hyper as ever.
“Well, before anything else, we should probably clean up.” Rin chuckled.
“Ahaha, I guess I got a little ahead of myself.” Nadeshiko grinned with embarrassment.
The two girls collected all their dishes and brought them to the wash area a little up the road.
“You know, I always hate when it's my turn to do the dishes at home. But there's something peaceful about cleaning them while camping.” Nadeshiko thought out loud, staring into space.
“I know what you mean. Everything is so quiet, you end up getting lost looking around while your hands do all the work.” Rin laughed.
“Sometimes it's scary, though. Like when you're lost in thought and another camper comes out of nowhere.” Nade said, looking around to make sure no one else was there.
“Haha, that's why I'm happy you’re here. It makes solo camping a little less scary at night.”
Feeling her face start to get hot, Rin quickly changed the subject from the embarrassing sentence that just came out of her mouth.
Chatting and cleaning, the two girls made light work of their remaining dishes. Collecting them all, they headed back to the campsite. Stopping on the way to wash themselves up for the night.
Once they were back, both girls sat back down in their comfy chairs with a big sigh.
HWAH!
“So do you still wanna watch that spoooky movie?” Rin asked playfully.
After not getting a response for a second, Rin looked over to see the pinkette next to her dozing off where she sat.
“Ha, I'll take that as a no then.” Rin whispered under her breath.
Pondering whether to wake her up now or just let her sleep a bit, Rin looked down at her phone to check the time.
“Oh wow! It's almost 12 already!?” Rin exclaimed loudly, waking up Nade in the process.
“Wah! I'm awake!!” Nadeshiko jolted up out of her chair in a pink blur.
“Oh sorry, Nadeshiko. I didn't mean to wake you up; I was surprised by how late it's gotten.
Nadeshiko collapsed back down into her chair, picking up her phone to check for herself.
“You're right. It’s basically midnight.” Nade said with a big yawn. “Do you wanna take care of the fire while I go set up our sleeping bags?”
“Yeah, sounds good.” Rin said with a smile.
Nadeshiko, very sleepily, stumbled her way over to the tent they were sharing for the night.
As Rin watched her go, she took in the serenity of the moment. Crickets chirping, leaves rustling, faint sounds of flowing water, the smell of fresh mountain air…
Feeling content with life, Rin snuffed out the few remaining embers from their fire and made her way over to the small tent a few feet away.
“Uhm nade…”
When she opened the tent flap, Rin found Nadeshiko curled up into a fluffy pink ball on the floor.
“What're you doing?” Rin asked, wondering whether she should take a picture for later.
“W—Well… I kinda forgot my sleeping bag..." Nadeshiko whispered, still on the floor.
“I thought I could just sleep without one, but I'm already shivering, and it's supposed to get even colder later…”
“I'm always so forgetful. I'm sorry, Rin...”
As Rin's eyes adjusted to the dark tent, she saw a few tears rolling down the pinkette's face.
Wanting to help her tired best friend, she kneeled down.
“Here, sit up with me, Nade.” Rin said softly, offering her a hand.
After a second, Nadeshiko reluctantly took her hand and sat up on her knees facing Rin.
“It was such a perfect night, and I feel like I ruined it now.” Nadeshiko turned away, choking on her words a little.
Taking her free hand, Rin put it on Nadeshiko's face and gently turned it towards her.
“You didn't ruin anything; you never could. This has been one of the best camping trips I've ever had with you. We can figure this out.” Rin whispered, gently wiping the tears from Nade’s cheek with her thumb.
*Sniffle* * sniffle*
“Wha- what are we gonna do, though?”
“It's too late for my sister to come get us, and It's too far for us to go get my bag, and its-”
Before Nade could continue spiraling, Rin cut her off.
“I still have my bag.”
Rin gestured to the grey and red bag Nadeshiko had laid out on the other side of the tent.
“It'll be nice and warm if we share it…”
Exhausted and emotionally drained, that idea sounded like a dream come true to Nadeshiko.
Seeing the look of relief on Nades's face, Rin gently ushered her towards the sleeping bag.
Rin watched as the pink-haired girl crawled into the bag and layed down facing away from her.
After taking in the sight for a second, Rin made her way into the bag too, zipping it up behind her and tightly wrapping her arms around her best friend and the girl she loves.
The sleepiness hit them both almost instantly, and as the two girls started to drift off together, Nadeshiko softly held the hand of the blunette behind her and whispered, “I love you...”
“I love you too…” Rin whispered, squeezing Nadeshiko even tighter and nuzzling into her soft pink hair…
