Chapter Text
Afternoon was already well underway over the town of Harmony Hill (or Critter Corner as it was regularly called by the residents.). While the sun slowly reached its peak a particular white and pink bat excitedly skips up to the porch of a dark house before going to knock on the door.
While she waits the bat hops up and down excitedly, it would take a few minutes but eventually she’d hear the familiar sound of heavy footsteps as the door opened.
“Good afternoon Mrs. Chops. Would it be any trouble to go up to see Baba?” She says with the most innocent smile she could muster. The adult sheep gave a cheerful smile at her.
“Not at all Rabie dear. She’s just in her room, as is usually the case.” She says, a sigh escaping her toward the end, stepping out of the way of the door to allow the bat entry into the home. Gesturing toward the stairs leading to the second floor.
Rabie Baby flaps her wings happily and makes her way inside. The bat had been a friend of the sheep’s daughter for almost as long as they could remember. So her friend’s parents always welcomed her in, especially if she got the black sheep to do literally anything.
Thanking her Rabie makes her way up, hopping up two at a time easily with her ability to take flight. As she nears the top the bat’s ears wiggle as they pick up noises from one of the rooms and she knew which one it was. She was lucky she didn’t need to rely much on echolocation, She’d likely be blind otherwise.
Walking over to the room that didn’t have noise she knocked on it knowing it was Baba’s room. After a moment Rabie began to do her regular introduction.
“Oh Baba Black Sheep, do you have any wool? Any time for sweet little old me? Whether it's an hour, a minute or only a second or two?!” She sang with a smile, her voice soft but affectionate, putting her wings up over head before bringing them down with the claws at the end of her winged arms forming a cute little heart.
Her hands forming the heart just so happened to align with the door to the room opening to reveal the sheep. Giving a warm smile to the gesture, a rare sight coming from her, as the critter before her flashed her fangs.
Opening her eyes, Rabie Baby finds the sight of Baba Chops standing in front of her. At this the girl jumps up and down excitedly squealing “Yes Ray! Yes Ray! All day, day, day!” to finish off her tune in that annoying tone that she knew the sheep liked.
A groan escapes Baba at the bat’s antics. Mainly from hating that tune being sung by anyone for many, many reasons. Anyone except for Rabie, who she didn’t mind doing since she did it in a way she found enjoyable. A fact that Rabie took notice of and actively exploited.
Calming down she stops jumping and puts a wing on her hip. “Anyway Baba, so… what’cha text me for?” The girl asks, it was unlike Baba to call her over first, usually requiring the bat to suggest and bring it up first.
“Oh… well...” She says, rubbing her arm. “I just wanted to see you, school’s draining for me afterall. Just wanted to without all of that stuff.” She explains with a bleat to which the bat nods. Rabie chuckles before replying.
“Oh okay, that sounds fine. Outside, in your room, where should we go?” She asks her friend and in response the sheep moves aside. “In here is fine for now.” Baba tells her, gesturing into her room while the brightly colored bat wanders into the sheep’s bedroom.
Rabie was one of the only critters allowed in Baba’s room. Despite being in here before her eyes like most times get drawn toward the sheep’s various shelves of little trinkets and specimens.
Baba walks over and sits on the bed, watching the curious bat look through her stuff. After a minute of the critter looking at the jars, tapping them with a claw she spoke again.
“So what you wanna do?” She asks with a smile. “Got some new juicy secrets over the last week.” She asks, shifting so she was sitting looking at Baba with her back to the displays.
Baba Chop didn’t answer right away, instead looking down at her skull charm, seeming to think something over. It would take a little bit for her to receive a response.
“Y-Yeah, what do you got?” She asks with a small smile, looking up from the skull a little. The bat tilts her head at her friend, was there something she wasn’t saying?
“Sure, but are you okay?” She asks, a little confused by the reclusive girl’s behavior. A sigh quickly follows her speaking up a bit.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it. Just… a lot on my mind currently.” She reassures simply. Before she has a chance to react the bat lifts herself up with her wings and walks over to the little black sheep critter.
Without another thought Rabie plopped herself down on the bed next to Baba. She stretches her wing behind the sheep and pats her back. Feeling the touch Baba glances at the animal beside her, seeing the innocent curiously mischievous eyes of the fuzzy girl become soft and comforting. Ears lowering just a tiny bit.
“You know you can always talk to me if you need Baba. You can trust me.” She tells her only to receive a sigh.
“Thanks Ray but I don’t think I should. I know you’ll likely spill it, I don’t want that. Especially for some things.” She explains with the same semi-deadpan the bat was used too. At this Rabie puts her other wing to her chest and lets out a breath.
“I would never tell a secret that you give me.” She says, sounding slightly offended, though knew it to be a joke. “You’re my best friend.”
“Really? You’ve let out plenty of secrets I’ve told you. Most embarrassing ones and ones I don’t want to be reminded of.” She explains to her, watching as the bat’s ears go down and the tips of them as well as her face turn a light shade of red from embarrassment. She had done that a lot of the time now that she was reminded, The little black sheep girl wasn’t an exception.
“Heck you’ve even told lies about me. You told the Nightmares I had a dead body in my basement when I don’t even have a basement.” She says with Rabie chuckling. “And they knew I didn’t. Which makes me even more surprised that half of them believed you.” With that the bat couldn’t help but burst out laughing, an activity Baba joined in on.
“They’re pretty dumb. Icky, Touille, even Maggie to an extent you can get to believe anything.” Rabie tells her with a giggle.
“Yeah, but my point still stands. I‘m not telling you anything that I don’t want anybody else to know.” She says, not wanting to take the risk. “Especially my family.” She adds under her breath but they both knew she could be heard by the bat.
“Aw, fine, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.” She says in defeat and disappointment, folding her unused wing up to her side.
“Oh believe me I want to tell you. I just don’t think I should, knowing your tendencies.” She says. “Even if it may concern you.” Baba adds making Rabie Baby’s ears perk up.
“W-Well, what could I do to earn your trust?” She asks, genuinely sounding that was something she wanted. Baba considers it for a moment, idly rubbing her skull charm as she thought. After about a minute of making Rabie wait she nods.
“Sure, I guess I could… just give me a week to think of something.” She says with a sigh. Ray nods with a smile, that’s all she needed, the possibility to gain the trust of her best friend.
“Thank you Baba!” She exclaims, managing to catch her off guard in a hug.
Baba chuckles under her breath. “Heh, no problem RB.” She says. It would be a minute or two before Rabie let go of her. She didn’t know why but Baba liked the hopeful look in the bat’s eyes.
“Alright, while you think that over. What’cha wanna do?” She asks, putting her wings back to her sides as the black sheep thought over her decisions as to what they could do.
“Like I said, I just wanted to hang out with you.” She says after a bit. “Yeah, what do you have to tell me?” With that Rabie’s eyes light up and her blood drop charm shined a little. “Oh I have a good couple.” She says with a smile.
Over the next half hour the sheep and bat discussed things Rabie found out about the smiling critters and even a couple of the nightmare critters. The mischievous pair loved doing this one on one, they could brainstorm what to do with this information outside of the lunch table at school without the nightmares overhearing. It was fun hearing about things that Rabie overheard every couple of days.
At some point during the conversion there was a mention of the graveyard across town. Rabie Baby perked up, seemingly remembering something. “Oh yeah, the graveyard. Poe invited us to come join her next week at the graveyard.” She says with a smile which got a low grumble out of Baba. She didn’t know yet…
“Oh that’s good to know. Yeah sure I’ll think about it.” Baba says after a moment, standing up and stretching which got her to let out a bleat in the process. “Anyway, I think that’s enough gossip for one day.”
“Yeaaah.” Ray admits. “Hey, I know you like being cooped up in your room but you want to go out to see what’s going on. Maybe we could fly around together?” She suggests. And while they were doing that she could figure how to gain Baba’s trust to know her secrets. The bat may be a little miscreant or whatever people called her but she still cared for her friends, or least some of them.
Even if it meant getting the help of one of… no don’t think of that. Not right now that’d ruin the moment. That’s a last case scenario if anything.
“Well, I did want to stay in here but I guess I should get some fresh air.” Baba admits, crossing her arms but soon dropping them to her side as Rabie Baby hopped up from her seat and likely from being excited dashing toward the window. “Not through the window!” She lets out.
Rabie stops herself halfway and puts a wing behind her head. “Oh yeah, oops. Let’s go.” She says, before padding over to Baba’s door. Opening it only to get the music from her friend’s sibling’s room. A little glad that Baba’s room was for the most part sound proof before gesturing to the black sheep to follow.
