You had always known there were dark things lurking beneath the surface of your family’s seemingly ordinary life. Your parents were just normal healthcare executives, right? You never expected this.
It started with whispers—low, urgent conversations late at night when the lights flickered off, leaving the house in complete darkness except for the dim glow of the streetlights outside. You heard your mother's voice, rougher than usual, speaking with someone you didn't recognize. It wasn’t the usual tone of concern or caring, but something cold, calculated.
Then, one evening, after weeks of subtle tension in the air, it happened. You were sitting at the kitchen table, absentmindedly stirring a mug of lukewarm tea, when your mother walked in, her eyes avoiding her gaze. It was strange; she had never been so distant before.
"Y/N," your mother started, her voice tinged with a hint of hesitation, "There’s something I need to tell you."
You felt her heart drop into your stomach. Your mother’s voice had never been so empty.
"What is it, Mom?" You asked, though your throat was dry and your words didn’t come out quite right.
Your mother took a deep breath and sat down opposite you, her hands shaking ever so slightly. "You know we’ve had some financial troubles lately… things have been hard. The company has come under certain threats." She paused, eyes flicking to the window as if afraid someone might be listening.
You nodded, the quiet weight of unspoken truths hanging between you both. But, you didn’t understand where this conversation was going.
"I’ve made a deal," your mother continued. "A deal with someone who can help us... get back on our feet. This isn’t his normal pattern, he usually just kills people like your father and I. He’s known by the nickname 'The Adjuster.' His real name is Luigi Mangione."
You felt your stomach twist. You had heard that name before—rumors at school, whispers in the streets. He was a figure in the shadows, someone people only spoke of with fear and reverence. An avenging Angel against the corrupt capitalist class, but one with connections no one wanted to get tangled in.
"Mom, what... what are you talking about?" Your voice faltered. "You’re talking about *him*—the man everyone’s afraid of?"
Your mother didn’t meet your eyes. "He’s the only one who could help us, Y/N. He promised that he could erase our debts, set things right again. But there’s a price."
Your chest constricted. "What price?"
There was a long pause. "You."
Her words hit you like a slap, your entire body going cold. "What do you mean? You can’t mean that, Mom, you can’t—"
"I had no choice!" Your mother snapped, standing up, her face pale with a mix of fear and regret. "He said the only way to settle things was for me to offer you to him. You have to go, Y/N. It’s the only way."
Your breath hitched, your vision blurring with a combination of confusion and disbelief. You stood up, backing away. "No. No, this isn’t happening. You can’t sell me to him!"
"I didn’t have a choice!" her mother cried. "You think I wanted this? You think I wanted to lose you? But if I don’t, we’ll be ruined. He’ll destroy us. He has the power to ruin everything, Y/N. I’m trying to protect you!"
"Protect me?" Your voice was choked. "By sending me to him? By offering me to *him* like I’m some... some object?"
Your mother’s eyes welled with tears. "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry… but if I don’t do this, we’ll both be lost. And I’ll never be able to forgive myself if that happens."
You could hardly breathe. Your thoughts were a mess, your mind screaming for escape, for some way out of this nightmare. But there was no escape. Not now.
Later that evening, Luigi Mangione arrived at your home. The man himself, standing in the doorway like a shadow, his expensive suit a stark contrast to the worn-down interior of their house. He smiled when he saw you, but it wasn’t a friendly smile. It was a smile that made you feel like prey, and he was the hunter.
"Luigi Mangione," he said, extending a hand to your mother, who reluctantly shook it. "A pleasure to finally meet you." His eyes turned to you, cold and appraising.
You felt the blood drain from your face as you stood frozen in place. He looked at you like he was deciding whether to buy a rare artifact or simply toss it aside. His eyes didn’t hide the dark, possessive hunger that lay beneath.
"She’s even more beautiful than I expected," Luigi said, his voice silky but edged with something dangerous. "I’m sure we’ll get along just fine, won’t we, Y/N?"
Your mother didn’t say anything, but the tension in her face spoke volumes. She was a woman who had made a decision and couldn’t take it back. The weight of it crushed you from the inside.
"I’ll be taking y/n with me now," Luigi said smoothly, his tone final. He looked at you, his eyes narrowed, expecting her to comply.
Your legs were shaky, your heart pounding in her chest. As you slowly walked towards the door, your gaze locked on the floor. What choice did you have? Your mother’s betrayal was too great to ignore, and the overwhelming power yet dark allure of Luigi Mangione’s reach left you no room to fight.
The car ride was silent. You sat in the backseat, numb with a mixture of fear, disbelief, and a sense of loss you couldn’t fully understand. What had just happened? Had you really just been sold to this man, and thus, to a life she had never imagined?
Luigi leaned back in the front seat, his hand casually resting on the armrest. "Don’t worry, Y/N," he said without turning to look at you. "You’ll learn that life can be... very different when you stop fighting."
Your eyes burned with tears. "I’m not going to be your slave."
Luigi chuckled softly, a dark sound. "We’ll see about that. I was surprised your parents offered you up like that. Disgusting, isn’t it?”
“And yet you bought me?” You whispered uncertainly.
“No one should have to live in a family willing to sell them out to save their own skin.” He said. “Doesn't that make you angry?”
You nodded. It did make you angry. How could it not?
"I’ve been wronged by people like your parents, their industry. Just like you Y/N.” Luigi spike. You were startled at how gentle his voice was. You could get lost in his dark, handsome presence. His charming smirk. If only you had met him under different circumstances.
Luigi continued as you were mesmerized by his devilishly handsome features. “Don’t you want to get revenge?” He asked.
The car turned a corner, and as you looked out the window at the city lights fading into the night, you realized with chilling clarity that your life had changed forever. And there was no turning back.
