Don't Look at Me (You Strange Creature)

Summary:

'Hunter shouldn't look this much like him. His hair, his nose, and even his strange-colored eyes Lucas had only ever seen when he looked into the mirror were the same. Now he looked down at his little form lying in his crib. It was impossible to tell how much he was going to resemble him once he grew up, but this was already enough to freak Lucas out.'

Notes:

Hunter is a Grimwalker, Lucas was there when he was created. Now he doesn't know how to feel about him - about him looking just like him.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hunter shouldn't look so much like him. His hair, his nose, and even his strange-colored eyes that Lucas had only ever seen when he looked into the mirror were the same. Now he looked down at his little form lying in his crib. It was impossible to tell how much he was going to resemble him once he grew up, but this was already enough to freak Lucas out.

He looked just like any little witchling. Unassuming - he would even call him cute if he was any other witch.

Lucas wondered if he didn't know that he was pieced together from parts he spent months hunting down, would he have been able to bond to it as Belos seemed to expect from him? He tried, honest to Titan, but he couldn't erase the memory of his tiny hands breaking the dirt.

No, he knew that this creature wasn't a witch, but something else.

The rest of the castle seemed to be smitten enough. Lucas wondered if that was a special Grimwalker ability or just most people's affinity for finding babies adorable.

Now, him being a Grimwalker - and he still didn't know what that was, and to be honest he didn't have time to research - wouldn't be that strange. Lucas was the Golden Guard, after all, he had seen more messed up stuff, a baby witch created through unconventional means wouldn't even place in the top ten list.

What he couldn't move past was the uncanny resemblance.

It made him wonder.

Maybe there was a reason Hunter looked like him.

That there was a reason that Belos was so ready to hand him down to him despite him being the one insistent on creating him.

And he remembered that comment. 'Should have been older, oh well.'

Maybe there was a reason why Lucas doesn't remember his young adulthood. Or his childhood for that matter.

It seemed illogical but with Hunter here, it made him remember things. Faint memories of frigid cold earth surrounding him.

Stress must be getting to him.

It makes him think blasphemous thoughts. He should stop worrying about this altogether and get his head back into the game - get back in line and back to his duties. Belos knew what he was doing and Lucas had long since vowed to follow him unquestioningly.

But the harder he tried the harder it became to ignore.

Especially the eyes, those were something that stumped him. It wasn't something he had seen in other witches or demons.

Hunter looked up at him, and then he tentatively reached out to him. Lucas frowned, he was under the impression that he didn't like him. Maybe they got off on a bad foot.

He entertained the idea for a moment. But no, he made his decision to keep his distance from the creature that he was settled with. His nanny could take care of him, and Lucas would monitor his progress as it was expected of him. When he got older he would have to get more hands-on, Belos made it clear that he was to teach him everything he knew. What purpose that served he didn't know. But he will do as he was ordered.

This - this familiarity was not necessary.

Lucas turned away. He couldn't stand those familiar colored eyes looking up at him.

His job was done for today. Hunter was safe and sound and there was nothing for him to do here.

As he was about to leave, Hunter started fussing and making upset little noises. Lucas frowned, he didn't think his departure would have such an effect on the little creature. While he lived with him, Hunter didn't waste a single minute to scream at the top of his lungs. Lucas assumed he was happy to be rid of him. So this quiet upset didn't sit well with him.

Could it be that he started to miss him?

Lucas quickly dismissed the thought. Hunter would do just fine without him.

Still, the pitiful noises gripped his heart, after all, Lucas wasn't a monster. Just... really bad at this.

He decided to go and wake up his nanny. He could make sure that Hunter calms down and goes to sleep. Lucas had more work to attend to.

Notes:

Lucas is being a jerk here, but that's in his character. It will take him some time to warm up to Hunter. I imagine that once Hunter starts growing older and shows some personality he will slowly start to change his mind. And get attached when he is actively teaching him.

Also, he starts to have his doubts. But expect him to put a lid on it and only consider looking into Grimwalkers when Hunter starts to look too much like him. Lucas just really doesn't want to take care of his problems 😤
