Work Text:

“I can’t believe this” Donna chuckles and shakes her head looking at what her husband bought on their trip to the mall. Once they got home she started to unpack all of the gifts they bought for their family and friends and that's when she saw that Harvey bought a special (mini) outfit. “Harvey?”

“Yes?”

"Mind telling me what this is?” she asks, holding the onesie in front of her and giving him a smirk.

The little piece of clothing is red and it has Little miss Santa’s helper written on it.

“Oh…” he looks sheepishly  at her and shrugs “I just thought it would look great on Soph”

“Weren't you the one complaining about going Christmas shopping?” she arches her eyebrows at him but melts knowing that he bought this for their daughter. “And I thought you didn’t like all the Christmas’ spirit”

“Well, I didn’t like it years ago, but someone made me change my mind” he smiles softly at her.

And that is true. It's their second Christmas together (as a couple) and their first one with their six month old daughter. Harvey has been over the moon with everything related to Sophie and during this Christmas season he's even more attentive. He is just making sure that his daughter gets everything she deserves to have the happiest Christmas, from the most giant tree to the best outfit for the day, even though Sophie won’t remember any of it. “Did you see the other one?”

“You bought two?” Donna asks, surprised.

“I did. But the other one isn’t Christmas related” he says, going over to the bags looking for the other onesie “I just looked at it and thought it was cute”

He holds it in front of him just as Donna had done minutes ago and it’s his turn to smirk at her. Her expression of surprise is followed by a shy smile. The small piece of clothing is very simple and it has Of course I’m adorable. Have you seen my mother? written on it.

“You’re an idiot” she smiles, but the truth is she still can’t believe that this is her reality now; that Harvey is buying cute and funny onesies for their daughter.

“But you are adorable. And so is Sophie” he gets closer to her and puts his hands around her waist.

“Well, adorable wasn’t the word you used to describe me last night” she whispers in his ear and laughs at his raised eyebrows.

“Well, Mrs. Paulsen-Specter, adorable is just one of the many words that I can use to describe you” he says and kisses her right after. She grins into the kiss and puts her hand at the tape of his neck, caressing it. “But seriously now, did you like it?”

It’s her turn to smile at him. She finds it adorable that Harvey still needs her approval, even when it’s something as simple as a holiday onesie.

“It’s very cute, Harvey. I love it. Sophie will be the cutest little girl on Christmas this year”

“She definitely will” he smiles and kisses her again. When they both hear their daughter making sounds through the baby monitor, they grin at each other “Looks like little miss wants to have an opinion on her outfit” Harvey kisses Donna’s forehead and goes to take Sophie.

Donna looks around their house, at how everything is in such a Christmas’ spirit around them. She has noticed how in the last few weeks Harvey has become even softer with Sophie and with her. She knows that the Christmas season hasn’t been easy for him, especially after he lost his mom. But she also knows that after they got married and Sophie was born, he has done everything in his power to show their family just how much he loves them. And this is just one of the many things she loves about him.

Deciding to put even more holiday spirit into their home, Donna goes for their record player and puts on her Christmas playlist. She chuckles seeing that the first song that comes up is All I want for Christmas is you  and remembers how she sang it to Harvey in bed on their Christmas morning last year. When she turns, she is met with her favorite sight ever: Harvey holding their little girl. He soon smirks at Donna.

“Really?” he asks.

“Oh admit it, you love this song. Especially after last year” she goes and caresses Sophie's back, melting when the baby looks at her with her soft hazel eyes.

“Well that was a very nice morning” he says and she rolls her eyes. He hugs her waist with the hand that is not holding Sophie and sings jokingly in her ear “ Make my wish come true, all I want for Christmas is you… ”

He hears her laugh and falls in love with her all over again.

“I thought I had already made your wish come true” she catches Sophie from him and smiles.

“Yeah, you did” he can’t help but smile when agreeing with her. She is his everything, but she’s also given him everything. “Oh look, we’re under the mistletoe. You know the rules, Paulsen”

“I still can’t believe you put a mistletoe in our home”

“What? It's a Christmas decoration, I couldn't not hang it here”” he looks at her with puppy eyes. “And it also gives me an opportunity to kiss you whenever we find ourselves under it” he explains in a serious but fun tone.

“You don’t need that to kiss me, Harvey. We’re married now, you can kiss me whenever you want to” she chuckles and smiles at him.

“That’s true. And I do it all the time” he grins at her, then looks around their house and says “But it’s nice to have it around. It gives a Christmassy air to our home, don’t you think?”

“I think…” she puts Sophie seated on her baby chair and walks over to Harvey, hugging him by the waist “You are doing an amazing job on Christmas this year. And not only with the decoration, but with everything. Don’t think that I haven’t noticed how dedicated you’ve been on making this the best time for Soph”

“I just…” he sighs, hugging his wife close to him and kissing the top of her head “I want her to have the best, Donna. Always. And you too. I know how much you love Christmas and all I ever want is to make you two happy”

“You have no idea how happy you make me, Harvey” she says with watery eyes and a grateful smile. “And I’m sure Sophie will have the best time ever because she has the best dad ever”

“And the most amazing mom”

“Well, that goes without saying” they laugh and Donna puts her hands on his neck and grins “So, we’re still under the mistletoe, are you gonna kiss me or what?”

“Always”

And so he does. And every year after that, he puts the mistletoe in the exact same place. Not that he needs it to kiss her, he knows he doesn’t. But it has become their tradition. One that they will never forget.

Notes:

Hey, Merry early Christmas! This is just something silly I wrote years ago for Christmas and I thought I could share with you all this year. Hope you liked it and sorry for any mistakes! Wishing everyone an incredible 2025 <3
