The world holds the living who are either sympathetic or corrupted in their own ways. It also holds the ones who've lived before most in modern day.
It's told of supernatural entities who live long, young, and powerful, their immortal gifts to exist longer by surviving off human flesh and blood. It would last them years if they ate well and were careful about their hunt.
Curiosity often led to disastrous consequences, as some become overly eager to uncover the origins and power behind these creatures, or unless, they were within reach of them at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
Something had been galloping and howling in the woods, and a camper, a blonde man in his late 30s, wearing a puffy red coat, slim blue jeans, and black running sneakers carrying a dying flashlight, had been fleeing from it. Whatever it was must have wanted more of the blood that flowed from the camper's left leg.
The claws from the unknown beast had created four shallow slashes into his flesh, which ached each time he pressured the leg as he sprinted, and yet the agony did not deter him.
The taste of sweet metallic lingered on his tongue as blood had flowed down his nose and into this mouth, his teeth now stained a lighter tone of red.
The frantic man refused to look behind him, but instead depended on his imagination. It was no bear nor a mountain lion. Maybe a wolf? He knew a bear wouldn’t stand a chance against it, whatever it was.
Fortunately, the camper still carried his cracked cell phone which he used to dial help. His brain raced with whether to call animal control, the police, or even the government about this so called monster. Would anyone believe his story?
It didn’t matter. He eventually dialed 9-1-1, and after one ring, a female operator's light voice spoke, "9-1-1, what's your emergency?"
The camper swallowed the leftover saliva and blood before jumbling out his words with ragged breaths to follow, "I-I-I'm being chased by a-a-a wild a-animal that is trying t-to kill me," he swallowed again, "P-p-please send help! I-I'm injured and lost in the woods!"
"Okay, sir," said the female operator calmly, "Please take a breath—-do you know where you are located? Are you able to find a street name?"
Street signs weren’t easy to spot in this matter as the darkness poured throughout every direction. No street lamps or anything, just the shadows. The flashlight soon gave its last breath, flickering off and the man to toss it aside.
He followed the tree’s silhouettes, finding nothing yet. "How the h-hell am I-I supposed to see anythi—!"
Suddenly, the massive beast knocked the camper to the ground with tremendous force. The camper desperately tried to wriggle free, but was only met with more vicious scratches as the beast pinned them down more firm.
The camper got a look into the bright, glowing eyes of the beast as it bared its sharp, canine teeth. It couldn't have been a rapid dog that was coincidentally large and able to tear right into flesh—-this was something beyond canine and naturalistic animals.
The beast had its teeth ready to sink into the camper, only to meet a rock to its face. The blow caused the beast to yelp in pain and turn away, clutching its injured face. Seizing the opportunity, the camper quickly stabbed the beast under the eye with a spare pocket knife.
The beast crawled away to recover, allowing the camper to get away as fast as he could. In the process, he dropped his phone with the operator still on the line, "Hello?," said the operator with a garbled voice, "Sir, are you still there?"
The man eventually lead himself into a nearby, singular road, nearly tumbling to the ground into a single, empty carriage way.
The man paused, taking shallow breaths. A new section of the forest on the other side caught the man’s attention, relief to wash over him like a wave of water cleaning him.
He hurried up the hill, despite his injured leg slowing his pace, but continued the camper without hesitation.
Rushing up the hill without glancing behind, he raced through the woods once more until he stumbled upon a new location.
A film school.
He let out a laugh that sounds like it belonged to a lunatic, yet it formed from the solace he received.
But his moment of triumph was short-lived, as the beast managed to find and grab the camper by the leg, dragging him away to his brutal fate. The camper's final, anguished scream pierced the air.
The nightly beast claimed several other victims within the past couple months, the latest being the camper. Despite the growing number of attacks and knowledge of its whereabouts, the identity and nature of this predator remains a mystery. Regrettably, the attacks show no signs of coming to a halt, as a new victim may turn up missing, under a full moon.

Chapter Text
September 28th, 2023
Halloween was placed third as California's favorite holiday. For years, many celebrate joyfully as the day we give thanks and the day we give hope and cheer. Halloween isn't for all but it is for the students at California College of Film as they liked to prep early.
Fearful and crafty decorations, both outside the school building and inside, created a new atmosphere full of nostalgia, in a way. It reminded others of their days dressing up in grading school and getting some treats in return.
Pumpkins and other spooky displays adored the majority of student's dormitory doors. The mood was ghoulishly fun, but the knowledge of a wild animal roaming the woods behind the school lent an air of mystery and dread, partially.
There’s reports of wild animal said to be wandering about the woods behind the school, coincidentally when the moon shone full and brightly. It's never revealed itself besides the soft yet rasped growling that you could only hear if you dared to inspect.
Ever since, five people have gone missing, one confirmed deceased as his corpse was found torn in half, according to police reports. Two were film students while three were innocent civilians.
Student's don't always pay attention as to be frank, the animal hasn't tried to enter into the school building and is likely building the courage to do so in the future. The school set out a curfew and strictly wants them to keep it in mind while they're out and about. And yet, school advisors hardly care about it.
Jade had pondered about the incidents from time to time, even opening her possibilities of what lurked in those woods.
She sat quietly in her dorm room at her work desk, reading up the last chapter of a romantic yet haunting novel.
Katie lied on her yellow and white twin bed, her eyes glued to the screen as she was doom scrolling through Instagram videos.
She glanced over at Jade, a small smile to tug at her lips. "You haven't finished yet?" Katie asked, leaping off the bed and squatting down beside Jade's desk, resting her chin on her hands stacked atop each other.
A soft chuckle escaped from Jade after finishing up a paragraph, "Yup, and it's worth finishing."
Katie rose a brow, "All fourty-eight chapters?"
"All fourty-eight chapters." Jade beamed. "And just finished this last chapter, too.
She could finally let the bookmark rest as she finally closed the book, flipping the hard cover over. The front of it showed a tall, young male with green scales and gills, bright yellow eyes, and sharp teeth who stood with his back turned with a menacing glare staring back at the reader.
A knight with a fluffy black Afro, hazelnut eyes, and shining silver armor stood beside him, holding up her large sword as she looked up at the sky with determination filled in her heart.
Katie closely inspected the novel's cover, "May I guess this to be...something close to Twilight?" Katie gave a teasing smirk.
Jade shrugged, "I guess, if you exclude the knight being in a love triangle, another human and the creature fighting for her heart, or even giving her a child who the creature could imprint on."
An awkward laugh escaped from Katie's curved lips as her palm lied over her eyes, "No thank you."
Jade laughed along until Katie's contracted face from her own laughter softened, morphing into a gentle grin and her eyes passionately analyzing Jade's features.
Jade had piercings that were nickel silver and faux gold, fitting in with her anatomy and dark skin. Practically, Katie couldn't resist just staring at her.
"What?" A grin formed around Jade's lips, Katie's soft gaze nearly catching her in a trance.
She quickly observed Katie's features—her tan skin, her semi curly and tangled maroon hair held in a tight pony tail that was longer compared to last year's length.
Katie pushed a finger against the bridge of her dark thick glasses, "Oh nothing," she replied with a sheepish grin. "The hero in shining armor reminds me of you."
Jade's cheeks flushed as she scoffed, "Does not...says who?"
"Says me," Katie got back on her feet, hands lied on her hips, "She's the hero of his life and you're the hero of mine."
Katie moved closer, leaning up to their face as she continued, "And yo—," before she could finish, Jade pressed her lips against Katie's, both getting a taste of each other for a few seconds.
Katie hardly rubbed any lip gloss on her lips, but usually it was something to keep her mouth from drying out. She tasted like menthol but also minty fresh at the same time.
Jade's gloss had a floral taste, but with a hint of sweet berry.
Jade removed her lips from Katie's, " "Your" the hero of my life," Jade added, beaming tenderly.
Katie chuckled as his face flushed slightly cherry, brushing her fingers tips lightly on her bottom lip, sensing soft brittleness, "Were my lips chapped?," He said softly.
"Not to me," said Jade. They stood from their chair, curling their fingers around Katie's palm and tugging her up into the middle of the room. Jade wrapped their arms around Katie's neck, a tender, loving gaze hypnotizing her.
Katie always hated when people stared, including those who were close to her, sometimes. But with Jade, it was almost mesmerizing. Her dark brown eyes were like the midnight sky before dawn approached. It reminded her of the first whisky she's ever tried, strong and sweet like cinnamon and caramel.
Jade felt a rush of content within their body, a delicate sigh escaping lazily from their lips. Goosebumps raced across their skin as Katie's chilled hands cupped her jawbone then brushed up to her cheeks. "Your hands are always cold." Jade whispered, their hands moving to rest on Katie's hips and the cotton fabric on his dark t-shirt pricking their fingertips softly.
"And you're always warm," Katie said, quiet and alluring. A gentle smile tugged at his lips.
"I like to "study" you sometimes, you know," said Jade with a hushed voice, "Just to remind myself how lucky I am."
Katie chuckled softly, his face flushed, the same sense of security to then shift it back to her original tone, "I always wonder how lucky I am too," she replied, "I even say to myself, "I don't deserve this." "
Katie's words bounced around in Jade's mind, letting go of his waist to reach back and cup his cheeks. "Babe," Jade said with a tone that struck Katie's heart stern but filled it with a warming promise. "You deserve everything that comes to you. Even if you say you don't, I'll always remind you."
Jade brushed back a strand of Katie's hair behind her ear, Katie to keep his cheek warm by rushing it into Jade's hand before it left her side.
Katie glanced at Jade's neck, his hands to wrap loosely around Jade's waist beforehand and leaning down to press her lips against it, his warm breath to send chills down Jade's spine. Jade shut her eyes with her chest to rise heavily before slowly moving back down.
"Would you still love me if I were a "cutesy" goblin?" she said, his voice low and his words cordially rolling against Jade's neck.
Jade softly snickered, "Of course. We're "both" goblins, but I'd say more like shrimps since we can't stop hunching over our desks."
Katie burst out a laugh, a beaming smile to stretch out her face. Whenever that same memory of Jade in the hunched position of her chair popped into his mind, he couldn't help but giggle.
"I will never forget that day when I caught you just squatting in your chair like some old shrimp lady. I was surprised you didn't fall."
Jade let out a cackle, "I don't even remember that," they laughed, "I was probably trying to stay awake somehow."
Katie began to snort in between laughs with Jade laughing along with him. Their laughter soon settled with their tender gazes staring back at each other, both taking turns to mouth, "I love you."
Jade then whispered, breaking the heartwarming silence, "And by the way, you snore like your dad," she said in a sing-song voice as they grabbed their book to lightly tap it on Katie's forehead.
Katie's face turned into a tomato and stammered, "I-I do not!?"
Jade let out a loud laugh," Yes, you do! It's even funnier hearing it next door!"
Katie grumbled playfully as she smiled, her hands covering her face.
Jade chucked as they placed their book into an empty slot. Three connected taps then emitted from the door.
"Come in!" announced Jade.
The door opened to two other film students who were good friends with Jade and Katie.
A girl with long, chestnut hair featured with a vibrant purple ombré, named Hanna had light olive skin, her nose had a distinctive, eagle-like shape. Whenever she smiled, it evoked a resemblance to Nancy Downs, with a stainless steel ring around the middle of her bottom lip. Her outfit consisted of a white cotton dress adorned with lavender petals that would seem too small for her due to her long legs, plum-colored leggings, dark knee-high boots, and a black leather jacket. She also carried a dark blue backpack with god knows what's inside.
She was with Dirk who had a warm complexion and short dark brown hair partially obscured by a red beanie with a separate enby and skull pin. They wore a plain, oversized grey sweatshirt, tattered loose jeans, and black combat boots. Their face was adorned with numerous piercings, including one between their tongue.
The two had their nails decorated also—-Hanna's in a rich burgundy color while Dirk's were acrylics decorated with grey and black stripes.
"What's up, gay birds," teased Hanna, a sly smile and her voice with a rasp. She closed the door behind her.
"We brought snacks this time," said Dirk as they took Hanna's backpack off her back, opening it up to reveal salty and sweet snacks perfect for a movie night.
"Oh hell yeah," said Katie as she smiled, holding Jade's hand, "But are you sure most of these aren't edibles?"
"Would you rather have booze?" Hanna asked rhetorically as she zipped up her bag, "But yes, I double checked to make sure "they" didn't pack any by accident."
"I was higher than a kite the last time," said Dirk, crossing their arms, "I definitely would not drug you guys—-I'm a sweet Angel."
Usually, they actually weren't.
"Though you'd definitely risk our enrollment with booze, too." said Katie, playfully smiling.
"You don't even drink!" They said, playfully pushing her head back.
Katie scoffed, "Not at school, though!" He replied, playfully punching Dirk's arm. "And alcohol tastes like dog-shit sometimes," Katie playfully spun Jade around before wrapping his arms around her, "And don't ask me how I know how that tastes."
"Wasn't going to," Dirk chuckled, "To be honest, it's one way to rid yourself from the worlds problems. I'd prefer a cheap beer from a typical bar, not from a party or some other crowded event."
Katie nodded her head, "And who even goes to party's anymore?"
"Dude, hello," said Dirk, "Don't forget we have a Halloween party next month. And you went to one here before, didn't you?"
Katie glanced away as if he were guilty of a crime.
"Oh, I forgot about that," said Jade, "But what about that "beast" lurking around—do you think it'll come after the whole party once it discovers activity?"
"As long as we're inside, who knows, said Katie, "Bodies" might start playing if someone were to see it coming," she quipped.
"Really," Jade replied, arching a brow, arms now crossed.
"It would make sense," Katie continued, smirking, "And it's probably just a mountain lion."
Hanna could only shrug, sitting down on the edge of Jade's bed as she thought of her possibilities, "I don't think a mountain lion could rip someone in half—unless it's a bear but we hardly see them around."
"Or maybe it's Jacob and Edward fighting to the death to see who can win someone's heart first."
"I'm going to leap out a window if I hear something about Twilight again," Hanna playfully rolled her eyes before she stood and inquired, "Anyways, shouldn't Mason and Hunter be here with the projector by now?"
"Oh, yeah," said Jade as she released Katie's hand and stood, walking next to their closet door to open the projector screen. They pressed a button in the center which allowed the screen to click open and allow itself to be pulled up into a blank white sheet.
Jade placed her hands on her hips as she sighed, "It's going to take centuries before we—-" before Jade could finished, three taps came from their door.
"Speak of the devil," Hanna said as she went to open the door.
Mason, a fairly slim and pale student, entered Jade's dorm. He had a messy, lengthy blonde bob that partially covered his ears and blue eyes and wore tattered black jeans, an oversized "Jaws" themed black T-shirt, with black and white sneakers. He also had a blonde goatee.
"Sorry for keeping you guys waiting," said Mason, holding the projector, "Instead of "Where's Waldo," we played "Where's Hunt's bodacious projector that always goes missing for decades."
"Don't say that as if it was in my dorm," said Hunter, following behind Mason, "It was literally in your mess so I'm sorry you don't know how to clean and that you're color blind, dude."
Hunter had greasy, short curly hair with some curls hung around the sides of his temple. His eyes were hazelnut green and had large black glasses that were close to Katie's. He wore a black and white swirled long sleeve with grey joggers and brown footbed sandals with his favorite puppy themed socks on. He also had a thin, dark pencil mustache with a small goatee.
"I have several things that are sky blue, so don't come at me," Mason argued, "And I like having things in my own way, thank you very much."
Hunter scoffed, "Yeah, whatever." Mason set the projector down on Jade's bed, "At least I'm not as blind as you though," he said as he twisted his torso to pop his back.
"Now that I look at it," Dirk snatched Katie's large, thick black glasses off his face, leaving her mildy confused, and placed them on Mason's. Of course, Mason tried his best to keep Dirk away, likely wanting to sock them in the face, but failed terribly.
Dirk backed up, looking at Mason in different angles as if they created the most miserable masterpiece of the century.
"Scratch that," said Dirk, snatching off Katie's glasses and returning them back. "You still look like your original dumbass self."
Mason jokingly and silently threw up his middle finger. "Anyways, are we ready?" He asked everyone in the room.
"We've been ready," said Jade, holding up a film case with the cover including four teens highlighted blue, while a figure carrying a metal hook on the side stood in a red hue, "With the film ready, too."
With the plugs inserted into the projector and it connecting to the electricity running through the walls, the projector shone onto the flat, flimsy white screen. Everyone went into their own sitting spots with a snack and drink picked from Hanna's bag. As the film disc began to spin and all had gotten comfortable, the film night began.
***
The film had an hour and forty minute runtime, giving Katie in between the unimportant scenes to space out or look around the room to let herself know she wasn't alone.
As the night wore on, she envisioned the other students in various scenarios—some winding down, others preparing to pull an all-nighter, or maybe out enjoying time out and about without a thought about curfew.
She longed for the peaceful moments when the beast did not appear to take the innocent. The robot's glowing red face in Katie's dreams often disrupted her sense of peace the most, however. Red was one of her favorites, and yet it caused unsettlement in her stomach whenever she looked at it now.
Negative thoughts aside, she remembered her partner sitting beside her on the bed, her warm body resting against hers. She observed the room to notice everyone separated, with Hunter sitting in Jade's chair, Dirk sitting on an unpacked box, and the with Mason and Hanna lying on the floor.
Looking out the window, the sun was already beginning to set—its warm, orange glow fading behind the trees. Those trees belonging to the forest that is home for the unknown.
Katie continued to gazed briefly through the window before shifting her soft gaze to Jade. Jade caught Katie's eyes, their heart skipping a beat before Katie turned away to the film, blushing and acting as though she were guilty of crime. Jade softly chuckled before looking back at the film as her hand slipped firmly between Katie's hand.
The film had finally reached near the end and an idea popped into Hunter's mind, "You know I still wonder," he said, "If this so called "beast" is actually just some maniac who took cosplaying a little too literal."
Jade snickered, still watching the film, "You might have the right idea."
Hunter furrowed his brows, "Why's that?" he asked.
"Some people already speculate it's some psycho impersonating a bear or another wild animal managed to travel from afar," Jade continued, "I wouldn't be surprised if it's a peeping tom, though."
Hunter nodded and hummed softly, "Well, if it ever comes over here," he said, standing up to stretch, "I'll have the perfect opportunity to use the aluminum bat I've had since middle school baseball...and some brass knuckles my aunt gave me."
"Couldn't you discuss this before or even after the movie's over?" whispered Dirk.
"The movie's already over," Hunter replied, "And besides, we've already seen it a hundred times, curtsy of our horror queen."
Hunter looked over to Jade, who playfully rolled their eyes but felt generous by the compliment.
"Im just saying, we don't wanna be on edge even further," said Dirk, rubbing their hands together anxiously.
"You're the only one on edge, Dirk," Hunter replied, "We just know not to be dumb and go exploring."
"Do I look like someone that explores like that?" Dirk then stood, "If I actually were dumb, I'd definitely take you with me," Dirk quipped.
"You can try it," said Hunter, playfully smiling.
"You know what guys," said Hanna as she stood, "Am I the only one who believes us watching horror or other suspenseful films is to cope with the fact we may appear on death's doorstep because of that thing?"
The room grew awkwardly silent as the film finally ended.
Despite their jokes and light hearted banter, the same question was always left unanswered to themselves, "What if I'm next?" The disquieted and yet itching feeling of what lingers outside those college doors could not leave the room, nor their minds, even if it were to be disrupted by positive thoughts.
"That's definitely...partially true, Han," Katie replied, "Though, the apocalypse has done enough for us. Also, the police still have no clue on what's lurking out there and neither do we," Katie scoffed, "And those asshats would give less of a shit about it and our safety. It's probably some rabies infested animal, who knows, but I'll agree the most on the psycho killer thing."
As Hunter switched the light back on, he gazed out the window across from him, the outside now shadowed in darkness with only the dim street lights in the distance to shine over some areas, but not the dark woods.
Hunter turned back and pushed up his glasses, "I just know one day, that "mysterious monstrosity" is going to come over and pick us one by one...when it feels a little lonely, maybe. But the real question is: "Are any of us, in this room, next?"
"Hunter, no offense but you sound insane sometimes," said Jade, grinning, "I hope you know that."
"Oh, like Hanna isn't the weird one pointing out how we cope with shit? Although, I know she does that just to fuck with us." He said smirking with his arms crossed.
Hanna, from behind, flipped him the bird before Mason added, "All of you creep me out more than the films we watch," Mason added, playfully clutching his arm.
"Yeah," said Hanna as she stood, giggling. "We won't forget the time you pissed your pants at the one haunted house we went to last year."
Everyone in the room giggled as Mason's pale face could nearly distinct a ripe tomato, "I already told you guys that I spilled water on myself...WATER!"
"Yeah, whatever, man," said Hunter as yawned and stretched, "Anyways, I'm out and so is my projector."
Hunter went next to the projector box, dispensing the movie disc before shutting the system down. Hanna put the film away and gathered up trash with Mason and Jade while Katie helped Dirk close the projector screen.
Dirk then mentioned, "it could also be a student here."
"That would be genuinely terrifying," said Mason, "If it is, then they definitely had nothing else to do than to terrorize others. However, wouldn't the killer use a sound box for all the growling effects just to scare?"
"Definitely, but people can notice it's fake in a second," Hunter added.
"True," Mason replied, holding the door for Dirk, Hunter, and Hanna to leave, "Anyways, you two get some rest," Mason saluted Katie and Jade farewell and goodnight, only to reopen the door to ask, "Wait, what restaurant are we going to again?"
"I'll text it to the group chat later," said Katie, playfully pulling Jade out of bed.
"Alright, then, don't let that killer or...whatever...bite....okay, good night," Mason shut the door, leaving Katie and Jade alone together.
Katie and Jade both looked at each other, exchanging a warm smile and giggling.
Jade checked her phone for the time, which said 9:39 pm, "I'm going to fix my hair," she said, pointing to the bathroom, "I'll be right back."
Katie gave a nod before going over to Jade's side and retrieving her pajamas from their drawer.
Katie first took her shirt off to put on black Godzilla themed t-shirt. The scent of Jade's cherry blossom perfume still lingered on it, giving Katie the chance to get a whiff every-time. She slipped on her white sweat pants that were patterned with her favorite cartoon sponge and starfish before getting a good stretch.
Extending her arms to stretch, Katie removed the hair tie from her hair and went to Jade's desk to check her phone. The first thing she saw were social media notifications as well as how much storage space she had been using. A group chat message Hanna made to "The Sinister Six" telling "everyone in her phone" to sleep well, to which Dirk, Mason, and Hunter had already responded.
Katie was typing a reply until a loud clatter from the bathroom made her jerked her head up, her heart immediately racing. The sound made her think she was witnessing the Pal max robot being thrown violently onto the floor by its powerful counterpart. The memory didn't last for long, luckily, as it only came like a flashing strobe light.
Katie's phone slipped from her grasp, clattering against sturdy yet soft floor, her breath quickening as she grappled with the echoing question of why this continued to taunt her.
"Katie?" Jade's voice echoed from the bathroom, Katie's breathing to steady as Jade's voice calmed her. Her hands hesitated over her phone. "You're fine...you're okay." Katie told herself as she finally picked up her phone, a crack nowhere to be found.
"Yeah," said Katie, her breath shaky. "Did you drop something?"
"Come into the bathroom!" Jade shouted.
Jade was finishing up their hair in the mirror, arranging it in two loose twin braids, when Katie went to open the bathroom door.
"Hey!" Jade said, putting on a silk purple bonnet before washing the hair products off her hands. They immediately rushed to Katie, whose face expression still appeared as if a ghost scared her soul right out of her body.
"Are you okay?" Jade asked, a worrisome gaze staring back into Katie's.
Katie's chest started to loosen. "I think so." She said, rubbing her hand over her heart. "I didn't expect to react to that."
A slight wave of relieve loosened the tension in Jade's shoulders, wrapping her arms around Katie, listening to her heartbeat. "Thank god." She sighed. "I'm sorry, babe."
"It's okay, really." Katie embraced Jade back. "It just startled me, that's all."
The embrace held a little longer. Jade eventually let go to retrieve a bottle of honey melon lotion underneath the sink. She put a decent amount on her palm, enough to apply to both her arms.
The tropical smell traveled into Katie's nostrils without him having to come closer. He noticed Jade with a white t-shirt with a bear with turquoise fur and a shooting star on her belly. There were a few paint stains, which always reminded Jade of Katie's wondrous creativity.
He hardly saw her arms out, especially out in public. Sometimes, it made her choke up. She’d rather let her closest friends and Katie see her rows of faded scars.
Katie would always kiss them every now and then, Jade also with Katie’s scars, but they were on her legs. Katie felt a bit of shame sometimes, but with Jade, she was at peace.
"Are "you" okay?" Katie hid her hands in the pockets of her pants. He was staring at her arms too long.
"Yeah," Jade replied as she rubbed leftover lotion into her face. She looked at Katie's hair. "Did you comb your hair today?"
After giving it some thought, Katie was surprised to learn that he remembered to pick up his hair comb today. "Actually," he said with pride, "I did."
Jade gave a sly glance, one eye brown raised as she got another dollop of lotion in her hand, rubbing her hands together.
"Is that surprising?" Katie chuckled.
Jade inched closer to Katie as she gave it a thought, "Not a lot."
Katie huffed a soft giggle as her hands gently massaged lotion onto his face.
Jade examined Katie's closely, pressing their palms to both sides of her face and grinning subtly. Katie smiled warmly in return.
"How've you been lately, love?" whispered Jade, still wearing a gentle smile.
"Okay," replied Katie. "Just catching up with school work and all."
"That's good," said Jade, moving her hands to her shoulders.
Katie held onto Jade's hand, rubbing her thumb against her palm, "How about you, my love?"
"Same," Jade replied, "Getting burned out here and there and just ready for this semester to already be over."
While Katie looked down, Jade watched as his face expression revealed that he was thinking deeply, which gave Jade a little concern.
"What's wrong?" Jade asked softly, resting a hand against her cheek, allowing her thumb to softly caress it.
"Just...thinking."
"About what?"
Katie took in a big breath before exhaling. "Do you ever think about how we were so close to never being together?"
Jade's eyes softened, immediately realizing what she meant.
The robot apocalypse
She had remembered the video she sent her when the school was being invaded. It made her heart ache at the fact her panicked cries for help made Katie sob at one point.
It was true—-if they haven't survived, if Katie didn't save the world, that would've been the last they'd seen each other.
She reached her empty had for the other side of Katie's face. "Every. Day."
Katie felt relief rush through his body, believing Jade would think his thought as a negative.
Jade smiled warmly up at Katie, admiring his gentle yet worrisome gaze, "I think about the apocalypse, too. When I knew I wasn't going to escape those robots, I immediately thought of you to comfort myself,"
Jade's hands reached down to Katie's, lifting them up just to fiddle with them. "I'm haunted constantly by the fact at one point, we were all going to meet our demise, but then relieved after I realize: "I'm with the most wonderful person in the world right now—-in the whole universe, actually."
Katie's eyes were beginning to mist, giggling to rid of the strong emotion, "I do the same," she huffed a cracked laugh. "Whenever I'm taunted by those robots, whenever I feel like I don't deserve to be with you, and even after proving me and my family weren't just...pathetic weirdos who couldn't fit in." A loose tear ran down Katie's cheek. "You've proved more to me that there's hope. It sounds corny but it's true."
Jade smiled broadly, her eyes glassy, "I'm glad I have. And I'm so glad to have met you."
For a moment, Katie and Jade shared a quiet, tearful giggle. Jade led Katie back into the room, with Katie turning off the light as she went out the door.
The two climb into bed together, Katie taking her glasses off before getting comfortable underneath Jade's large, yellow blanket. Her and Jade faced each other, smiling as they locked eyes.
Katie moved closer, down to Jade's chest to rest her head against it, her soft heartbeat soothing her. She held onto Jade's waist, her eyes growing heavy.
Jade hugged back as she swallowed, "And you don't have to worry about me going anywhere anytime soon, knowing that thing is out terrorizing all that it sees."
There was a beat before Katie adjusted her head to look up at Jade, "Promise?"
Jade smooched the top of Katie's forehead. "Promise."
Katie released Jade to sit up, with Jade also to face Katie, both placing a hand on each others napes as their foreheads heads softly collided. Together, they whispered, "bonk."
The two lied back down with Katie returning back to the same position around Jade. "Good night, love," Katie said softly.
Jade quietly chuckled, brushing her fingers against Katie's back, "Sleep well."

Chapter Text
September 29th, 2023
As the clock struck midnight in Kentwood, Linda and Rick Mitchell were just arriving home, having cut their date night short. Despite the fact that it was an opportunity to socialize and enjoy the outdoors since the apocalypse, they preferred the comforts of their own home for most dates.
"Finally," said Linda, flopping on the sofa, "Sanctuary." Linda's arms extended outward, bending at unnatural angles as her double-jointed elbows twisted in opposite directions.
Lin only wore Rick's yellow coat for warmth, but underneath she had on a fitted, long-sleeved plum top that exposed the freckles on her shoulders. She also had on dark blue bell bottoms and light brown ankle-heeled boots. Her iconic heart earrings, which she wore practically every day, completed the look. The only makeup she had done was a midnight purple lipstick that matched with her royal purple eyeshadow.
Rick joined Linda on the sofa, equally drained. He wore a beige turtleneck with light blue bell bottoms and dark brown ankle-heeled boots. Luckily, the turtleneck comfortably fit around his neck and less scratchy against his skin.
"You said it, hun," Rick said, taking a relieved breath.
"I do wonder," Linda mused, "Why do we even go out?"
Rick paused for a moment before shrugging. "Maybe to fit in with people besides the Poseys?"
"Oh, right," Linda replied as she stood, removing Rick's jacket and tossing it on his face. "Maybe we should just stick with the neighbors then."
Rick chuckled as he pulled his jacket off his face. "Let's not forget the last outing we had with them, though---and that was before the apocalypse."
Linda tapped her finger against her chin, lightly humming, "May I recall you laughing so hard at Jim's joke that the fettuccine noodles from your chicken alfredo came right back out your nose?"
"Oh, god," said Rick, obscuring his facial shame with his thick hand, "And that we left out of utter embarrassment?"
Linda snickered, her hands on her hips, "But you said you suddenly had diarrhea from food poisoning."
Rick stifled his laughter, still filled with embarrassment, "Never again."
Linda let out a light giggle. "Well, anyway," she said, "I'm filthy from being outside, and the shower is beckoning me to come."
Rick rose from the sofa, stretching his limbs as he spoke. "Alright, Lin—I'm right behind you."
Linda smiled warmly, giving Rick a peck on his cheek before leaving the living room and into the hallway.
The room fell into an eerie silence after Linda was gone. Rick observed the darkened space before switching on a nearby lamp.
As the lamp's dim light illuminated the room, Rick yelped and leaped back when he noticed Deborah Bot 5000 and Eric standing before him.
"Dear God!" exclaimed Rick, clutching his chest, "I'd rather not have heart problems!"
"We are sorry, Rick," said Eric, "We were just happy you and mother are home—-we've already expected you both to come earlier than expected."
"I see," said Rick as he calmed, "How was everything while we were out? How's Aaron?"
"Aaron is asleep." said Deborah, "He sleeps like an Angel, of course, according to Mother."
Rick nodded, "Well, that's a relief," Rick said, slipping his hands into the pockets of his bell bottoms, "At least he didn't attempt to burn the house down again."
"I recall us running your grocery errand," Eric mentioned, "But we got back in time to stop the moderate flames from the grilled cheese."
Rick rested his hand against his head, closing his eyes, "Can't forget that."
"We will now leave you to your unwinding time from the nightly outdoors," said Deborah, walking away towards the way close to the door with Eric and both saying in sync, "Good Night, Red-faced anger man!" The two then shut off into sleep mode.
Rick chuckled, "Good night, boys." He said, taking in a deep breath as he composed himself. The scent of the house still had its fresh smell along with the fresh scent of lavender freshener surrounding the air.
Rick quietly walked into the hall, approaching Aaron's bedroom door labeled with Dino stickers and a picture of his face photoshopped on a dinosaurs body—-horrific yet beautiful. Rick hesitated a second before tapping his knuckle against the door. With no answer back, he cracked the door open to peek his head in to see the room dimly lit by Aaron's desk with Aaron sitting there with blue headphones wrapped around his ears. He appeared to be locked into his notebook, scribbling innocent doodles and writing down what seemed like research.
Seizing the opportunity, Rick crept up behind Aaron to tap the leg of his chair, causing it to jerk suddenly. Aaron jumped in surprise, his heart pounding.
"What the—!?" Aaron exclaimed, yanking off his headphones. For a moment, he thought it might be Deborah or Eric, but relief washed over him when he saw it was his father.
The once young, dinosaur-loving 10-year-old had grown a few inches, his short, strawberry-blond hair now hanging a few inches longer and had blue braces. He had on grey sweatpants and a white t-shirt with a hand-drawn dinosaur.
"Oh, hey dad!" Aaron said, looking up as Rick fully entered the room, his arms crossed. "You're home early...again."
Rick raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, but aren't you supposed to be in bed early, young man?" he questioned.
Aaron playfully rolled his eyes as he stood. "Yeah, but plans I had for when me and Abbey hang out again took over, and I couldn't sleep," he explained as he climbed into bed.
Rick's eyebrow raised with curiosity. "Oh?" he said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "And what is this "stuff?" "
"Just more dinosaur theories, games I made myself, and ideas for our own own Dino designs..." Aaron said.
Rick laughed. "You and Abbey's dinosaur shenanigans," he said. "At least it's not...anything other teens are up to these days."
"First of all—-yuck," Aaron said, recoiling, "Second, what teens my age are doing is usually vandalism, partying with drugs and alcohol, or just being a menace to everyone they meet because it's "fun."
Rick nodded, "That's true," he said, "Now, is it okay if I sleep now?" Aaron asked, already snuggling under the thick, heavy covers.
"Oh, right, yeah," Rick said, standing up. Aaron yawned as he shut his eyes. And just before Rick could switch off the desk light, Aaron reopened his eyes and asked. "Dad?"
"Yeah?" Rick paused. Aaron hesitated for a moment. "I still miss Katie...am I too old for that?"
Rick's brow furrowed. "Of course not!" he replied softly. "No one's too old to miss someone close. What made you think that, kiddo?"
"Because she's much older than me now, and I'm right behind on that path now," Aaron played with his fingers. "And I still think about being around her all the time. She's always been there whenever I needed support or protection. I guess I just miss her a lot."
Rick's expression softened, memories of his eldest child flooding back. "Oh, buddy," he said gentl as he inched close, Aaron sitting up, "I miss Katie so much---every minute of every day. We know she's getting older and more mature, focusing on her own path, but just know she misses you too—-all of us. it's not a terrible thing to miss him, ever."
Aaron smiled softly. "But are you sure?" he asked. "I don't want to sound like I'm "soft," but I also don't want to feel ashamed about family, if you understand, Dad."
"Of course," Rick replied, smiling back, "Come here, buddy." Rick extended his arms, inviting Aaron to lean in and fold himself into an embrace. Rick's eyes began to weld with tears. "Love you, Dad," Aaron murmured.
"Love you too, Aaron," Rick said, reluctantly releasing his son and hastily wiping a tear.
Rick headed for the door, pausing to take one last look at Aaron, who waved at him. Rick smiled before closing the door behind him. Rick stood outside the door a moment, recollecting his thoughts as he headed finally to him and his wife's bedroom.
After a nice shower with extra heat provided from the waterproof plug-in heater, Rick slipped into a plain white t-shirt with just his red boxers. He breathed in and exhaled deeply as he left the bathroom, glaring at Linda in bed who was reading articles from her tablet.
Linda had her dark silk bonnet wrapped around her hair, glancing up to notice Rick staring, "Hey, hon," she greeted, "Was Aaron asleep when you checked on him?"
"Yup," Rick replied, "Snug as a bug."
"Great," Linda smiled as she took off her lavender glasses and set them aside on the dresser. She noticed Rick's face in deep thought, "What's wrong hun?"
Rick looked at Linda, "Oh nothin'," he said, taking his glasses off and setting them on the dresser beside him, "Just uh...thinking about our first kiddo, is all."
Linda smiled softly as she exhaled deeply, "Of course," she said, turning off the lamp on her side, then sighing, "Everything just went so fast, huh."
Rick nodded softly, "Yeah...it did. Taking her to college felt like the day we took her to her first day of preschool."
Linda laughed, "I remember her being so excited, then when it was time to go, she clung onto me, balling her eyes out."
Rick also laughed, "Oh gosh," he said before he sighed, sniffling as his eyes misted with tears.
Rick then heard a sniffle coming from Linda, she had her mouth covered as she tried to compose herself from the thoughts of her daughter.
"Oh Lin," said Rick, pulling her into a warm embrace, "It's okay, it's okay," Rick sniffled, "You're already making me cry."
Linda giggled as tears fell down her cheeks, "I know," Linda said with a broken voice and a smile, "And you know what, I kind of want to make her face into cupcakes again."
Rick smiled warmly, "Okay if I join you?" He asked, releasing her from the embrace. Linda wiped a tear away, "Of course."
***
The sun had yet risen, with Jade and Katie snug in bed, together. Jade had wrapped herself around Katie like a blanket, pressing her ear against his back to feel the soothing thumps of his heartbeat. It always remained steady, besides the time he drank Red Bull attempting to pull an all nighter.
Katie inheriting Rick's snoring was indeed true, since half of the time it was serene, with a few brief snorts.
Finally, the five o'clock alarm sprung Jade's phone to life, building up a gentle, mellow ringtone that gave them the assurance of a fresh, new day.
Jade's hold was reluctant to release, and Katie felt the same way. As Jade shifted slightly, Katie's hand gently settled on her arm, silently conveying that their soft embrace should linger a little longer.
"Not yet," Katie mumbled wearily, his eyes remaining shut. Jade let out a gentle giggle, their eyes kept closed too.
"You know we have to get up," said Jade, also in a weary voice, "And yet, I also don't want to let go."
"We still have time," Katie added, "The days that are free are always short, and yet the days we're busy are the longest."
"You're so right, my love," said Jade as they sat up to gently press their lips against Katie's arm, trailing soft kisses all the way up until they reached Katie's cool cheek, where she placed a long, tender kiss.
Katie smiled warmly as Jade leaned against him for half an hour. Afterward, they prepared for the day both in their separate dormitories—-the day going to be relatively short. Both Jade and Katie were students known to finish on time, fueled by enthusiasm despite getting little sleep.
All the other film students were up and at it, too, with film equipment either in hand or running other errands before class.
Jade was the first to be ready, wearing an orange long-sleeve sweatshirt, grey joggers, and dark sandals with grey socks. She came out her dormitory taking a deep, soothing breath of the college air.
With Katie being Jade's next door neighbors, all was assured knowing she could come to him whenever as well as Katie with her.
Katie usually took his time, enough for Jade to stand by until he came out, pretending to telepathically send a message to her love, "I'm waiting for you."
Jade's phone buzzed in her back pocket, reaching to take it out and discover a group chat message from "The Sinister Six."
A message from Hanna said, "Soooo, have we decided on that new place up the street?"
Jade's mind drifted back to the day she had stumbled upon the place before its grand opening. The wistful arcade machines and pool table she remembered filled her with a rush of anticipation.
Jade typed a reply, "Hell yeah!"
A short while later, Katie emerged from her dorm, her black noise-canceling headphones adorned with silly and colorful stickers hanging around her neck. Her worn backpack was slung over her shoulders as she stepped out, dressed in a mustard yellow sweatshirt, slim blue jeans, and light brown snow boots.
"Hey," Katie greeted with a smile, shutting the door behind her. "You ready?" She placed the headset around her head and extended a hand towards Jade, the two remaining close as they walked down the hall.
Though most at the school were aware of Jade and Katie's relationship---especially due to Katie's heroics during the apocalypse and Jade geeking about her nonstop---no one seemed to truly recognize Katie's existence the way her new friends did. Some would approach her solely for autographs or filming advice, never for genuine friendship.
Katie never felt entirely comfortable in the crowded hallways, believing all would just glare, laugh, or be as loud as possible, but with Jade by her side, she felt at ease. The headset Katie wore muted the outside world just enough to soothe her, too.
As the pair made their way through the quad, Katie remained lost in her thoughts, occasionally glancing up at the sky. She sometimes questioned the nature of reality, finding the world both overwhelming yet captivating.
Jade and Katie stopped in place for a moment without Katie taking her eyes off the clouds slowly obscuring the sun.
Katie turned to Jade to also see Dirk and Mason speaking, but their words were muffled, "What was that?" said Katie as she took off her headset. "Hanna's driving us to the restaurant tonight!" Dirk announced.
Katie paused, Jade matching her movements. "Wait, I thought Mason was taking us," she said.
"Argyle called out due to a family emergency," Mason explained, rubbing the back of his neck. "So I've got to cover his shift. But hey, at least I'll get a little extra in my paycheck."
Jade let out a sigh, "Well, alright," she said, "We probably wouldn't have missed you anyway."
Mason scoffed, "I bet you guys will. And you're gonna be okay getting back, despite that "thing" out at night, right?" he asked.
"I think we'll be fine without you being our mother hen," Katie quipped, "It's not like it's going to attack the car—-it seems too nervous to even encounter anyone actually."
"You know, at least I'm not packing you all a healthier dinner," Mason added, hands on his hips, "And that would actually be an issue, and I can agree, that animal is a little to shy, maybe we should encourage it to open up about any feelings it has or something."
The four shared a laugh before separating, "And I'll need someone to open my window for me after 9:30 or 10ish, so Katie, you can be my lookout!"
"Will do, Mase!" said Katie as she walked off with Jade, waving goodbye. Jade then shouted as they were walking off, "And don't expect us to save you a slice or a crumb!"
"Don't worry!" yelled Dirk from afar, "We're not!"
Mason then jokingly pushed Dirk to the side, with Dirk recovering to playfully wrap their arm around Mason's neck.
"Oh my god, love I'm so excited!" Said Jade, jumping up in down while still holding Katie's hand, "And I've already seen the inside and it looks like the eighty's got a phone call to time travel and bring some of their magic back to that place."
Katie's eyes lit up, "Now you're getting me even more excited!" he said, "It sounds nostalgic, but more exciting for people who've lived through the eighties, like our parents."
"Oh my dad might love it but my mom would probably stay there for only an hour," said Jade.
"That almost sounds like mine," said Katie, "They don't always stay out for long, unless it's something really worth staying for, and I think with where we're going, they'd love it, and Aaron, too".
Jade tittered, "It would be so fun if your family did come and spent some time with the group, they'd probably love it, and I know your mom would also be the mother of the group."
"Oh definitely," said Katie, smiling, "But anyway, hopefully we'll have a good time. I love that I'm hanging out with my favorite people, especially you."
Jade gave a tender smile, "Me too, Kate."
With hours to have passed quite quickly, Jade spent the rest of the day engrossed in her usual college routine. Time seemed to fly by as she intently worked on her video project, experimenting with new filmmaking techniques besides filters, screenplay, and more professional editing she had learned.
She sat alone in the cafeteria, sipping herbal green tea with a hint of lemon. She typed away on their laptop, the music from a playlist her and Katie had made blasting through her earbuds. Absorbed in her work, Jade glanced up in surprise when a familiar voice greeted her.
"Didn't think I'd see you here," said Angie, a girl with long wavy brown hair in a bun, with brown monolid eyes, and fairly tan skin. Angie wore a blue short-sleeve shirt with a patterned grey and white sweatshirt underneath, blue skinny jeans, and brown winter boots.
Jade removed an earbud and looked up. "Oh, hey, girl!" she said as Angie sat down. "What have you been up to?"
"Nothing much," Angie replied, "Just surviving. I thought you'd be with Katie. Is he okay?"
"Oh, yeah, he's fine! We always have our alone time. And there's nothing too exciting with this project I'm doing," Jade explained, turning her laptop around for Angie to see, "I'm just finishing up my puppet video about Greek mythology that's also helping me practice storytelling and more sense in direction."
"Sounds dope," Angie said, pulling out a bag of colorful gummy candies and popping one in her mouth. "Try one," she offered, extending the bag toward Jade.
Jade eyed the bag skeptically. "Please tell me those are CBD," she said.
Angie chewed thoughtfully. "Nah, Live a little—-it's Friday," she said, pushing the bag closer.
Jade pushed it back. "Girl, no thanks. I'm meeting up with the gang to go eat and hang, and I don't feel like seeing God and Mary," she said.
Angie sucked her teeth, "Party pooper," Angie paused to observe Jade. "Alright, so you and Katie—how's that going?" she asked, her tone laced with a hint of concern.
Jade raised an eyebrow. "And why is that any of your business?" she replied, resting her chin in her hand.
"Hey, I'm just trying to look out for my bestie. You two are like, inseparable and I wanted to make sure nothing's happening with Katie, either," Angie said, holding up her hands in a placating gesture.
Jade took a sip of her tea. "Well I mean, there's nothing terrible happening. But uh...," Jade scratched the back of her neck, "I do worry about losing her a lot sometimes, and I know she worries about me too."
Angie nodded. "I get that. And I bet you're both tense about the "beast" situation, huh?" she probed.
Jade nodded slightly. "Yeah, Katie's more on edge about it. And then with her...," Jade cleared her throat, "We just worry about each other, that's all," she said, offering Angie a reassuring smile.
Angie smiled softly back, but the moment was interrupted when Mason suddenly appeared and slammed his hands on Angie's shoulders, startling her. "The hell, man?" Angie exclaimed.
Mason laughed. "That's payback for last time!" he said.
Angie scoffed. "Oh, whatever. What are you even doing here, anyway?" she asked.
"Can't I say hi to my friends?" Mason replied. "I just happened to see you guys coming in, so I figured I'd join in."
"Or are you here for my "gummies" again?" Angie smirked. Mason looked away, guilty. "Maayyybee...but I have work later, so maybe not now," he admitted.
Angie chuckled as she pulled out another plastic snack bag and put three gummies in to hand to Mason, who immediately stuffed it into his pocket.
"And Jade," said Mason, "You're all by your lonesome, what's that about?" Angie smacked the back of her hand against Mason, "I'm right fucking here?" Angie interjected. "You don't count," Mason replied.
Angie stood and flipped him the bird directly in his face, with Mason shaping his index finger and middle finger into half a heart and setting it next to Angie's middle finger. "You're not that cute," Angie said, playfully rolling her eyes.
After some giggling and finishing up the last of their tea, Jade stood from their seat to stretch. "You guys are funny," they said, putting their laptop away and throwing their brown shoulder sling backpack over their shoulder. "But did you guys just want to walk and talk? I gotta head back to my dorm to get ready for tonight."
"You're going out?" asked Angie as she stood.
"Just the others, her, and Katie," Mason answered. "I was supposed to go but I have to cover someone's shift at work."
Angie chuckled. "Maybe I should be your replacement?"
Jade laughed. "I mean, why not?"
"Oh, my dear friend Jade, replacing me?" said Mason, getting on his knees in a dramatic way. "What do I have to do to win my place at possibly the best restaurant in the world?"
"Oh, I'm interested," said Angie, crossing her arms as she began walking towards the exit with Mason and Jade following. "Is it the new one up on Hult?"
"Yeah!" said Jade. "It seems like helluva nostalgic place to go."
"Oooh," said Angie, "And I actually saw the place being built brick by brick, and I never thought they'd finished it already..."
Meanwhile for Katie, she sought solace in the library, relishing the quiet as she cleared her head from the constant noise. Thankfully her time to babysit Andrew later that evening was cancelled for his family had other plans. Katie would use this respite to read a gripping mystery novel, tackle schoolwork, or simply bask in the soothing rhythm of music.
Today, Katie had poured her thoughts into her journal, hoping to find clarity. A nagging question lingered—- "Am I someone or a nobody?" Despite having found love and a tad sense of self, she continued to grapple with her inner turmoil and self-consciousness.
Katie's pen danced across the page as she captured her observations of the world around her. As the sun dipped lower in the sky and the moody clouds hung over, she watched the birds soar and the wind rustle the fallen leaves. "Hey, Kate!" a raspy feminine voice called out.
Katie turned to see Minnie, a fellow student with a distinctive dark, spiky mullet and brownish-green eyes. Minnie's crooked-toothed smile lit up the room as they plopped down in front of Katie. "What are ya doing here all by yourself? Usually, Jade's with you. Are you doing okay?"
"Oh yeah," Katie replied, "Just clearing my head. I do this sometimes whenever I'm alone."
"Ah, I see," said Minnie, "Wait, I'm sorry uh...I didn't mean to—-" Minnie was about to leave when Katie gestured them to stay, "No no, stay," said Katie, "You're already here and I'm...kind of having writers block."
Minnie peered over Katie's notebook, "What are you writing?"
"Just...random things from my head," said Katie, rubbing her forehead, "Then I hit a pot hole on the thoughts about myself."
Minnie hummed softly as they nodded, "I see," they said, "Have you thought about your personality? Or maybe your traits?"
Katie shook his head, "Nah," he said, "More about...," Katie sighed, "I don't really know." Katie burried his face into his arms.
"Hey, don't sweat it," said Minnie, resting their chin on the back of their hands, lying flat together on the table. Minnie then blew air into Katie's hair, "I'm sure you'll figure yourself out someway."
Katie lifted her head up slightly as she sighed heavily, "Yeah...hopefully."
The two sat in silence for a moment, giving Minnie the chance to glance at their cell and remember, "Hey, do you know that new pizza restaurant that opened up recently?"
Katie sat all the way up, "Oh yeah!" she said, "Me, Jade, and the Gang were actually about to go tonight—you're welcome to join us, if you want!"
"Holy shit, I would love to," said Minnie, "But I gotta catch up on some school work, especially this one class project I've been working on."
Katie's eyes lit up as she put her notebook into her bag, "Oh my god, give me all the details!" Katie stood, "But let's do it on the way to my dorm."
Minnie got up and followed behind, with the two walking together into the cool, autumn air with the sky and clouds shifting into a breathtaking orange hue.
"The film I'm working on is psychological horror," Minnie explained, "Focusing on this cursed collectors item the main character discovers that basically shapes him into something terrible that he doesn't realize while he "believes" it's benefiting him. It also does things to the people he's around, mainly if he thought about it."
"Holy shit," said Katie, "That sounds freaking awesome! You should totally show me what you have so far and maybe, collab a little?"
Minnie playfully placed their index and thumb underneath their chin as they hummed, "Your skills are quite remarkable, I must say," they said, "I shall think about this collaboration with the legendary, Katie Mitchell."
Katie laughed, "I promise barfy the puppet won't be an extra."
"Actually," said Minnie, "He might be a good bit of comedy." Katie chucked and snorted, "Alright."
The hallway lacked the usual bustle of students, most likely settling in for the day or preparing for their own plans. Suddenly, two hands with black and blue nail polish settled on Minnie's shoulders, revealing them to belong to Hanna.
"Hello, Minnie," Hanna said, wrapping her arm around to Minne's shoulder. Hanna, being a couple inches taller than Minnie and Katie, had to look down a bit when speaking to them. "What's up, you two?" Hanna asked. "Are you joining us tonight, Minnie?"
Minnie waved their hand as they shook their head. "Not tonight," they replied. "I've got some shit to catch up on."
"You mean taking a fat shit or school shit?" Hanna asked, raising a brow.
"Well, if I had any dairy today, then yes, I'd be taking the biggest, fattest shit in the school's toilet," Minnie quipped. "I'd be in the same situation Marcus was in white chicks."
Hanna cackled, getting in front of Katie and Minnie while walking backwards. "Now that would've made headlines, but anyway, I heard there's going to be a big full moon out tonight, sadly not on a Halloween night."
"That would've been awesome..." said Minnie, her voice suddenly beginning to wane as Katie focused on the woods appearing and disappearing seconds through the windows he passed by. All the noise around her cut out as he thought about what kind of casualties might happen tonight or in the next few days as the missing person's murder case still grows.
"Katie," called out Hanna. Katie immediately turned his attention to Hanna and Minnie, who had arrived at his dorm a little earlier than him, "You good?"
Katie couldn't bring words out, up until he ran up a few inches closer to the two, "Sorry," he said, "Were we talking about something?"
"Eh, not really, said Hanna. "I was just about to leave to go and get ready," Hanna started walking off before waving goodbye, "I'll meet you outside soon!"
Eventually, Katie reached her dorm, with Minnie still standing by. "Well, I might as well head back," they said. "Wait, is Jade in their room? I meant to return the—"
It was then that Jade opened their dormitory door, their hair in a temporary bun, "Oh hey guys!" they said. "I thought I heard something. And I didn't think I'd see you, Min! How've you been?"
"Good, actually!" Minnie replied, reaching into their bag. "I meant to give you your fancy ink markers back." They handed Jade the set of colorful markers.
"Oh, crap," said Jade, taking the markers. "I forgot about these. Thanks for, uh, returning them." They smiled.
"No problem." said Minnie, stood awkwardly for a second, "Well, uh, I'll let you guys get back to it, and enjoy your night at that new place!"
Jade intercepted Minnie before they could leave. "Wait a minute!" they said. "Did you wanna come along? The more, the merrier, and Mason isn't going so..."
"Oh, nah," Minnie replied. "I've gotta catch up with my project, but maybe save me some garlic bread sticks or something?"
"Y-yeah," Jade said, laughing. An awkward silence fell over the three as they stood smiling at each other.
"Well," Minnie chuckled softly, "I'll see y'all 'round?"
"Yeah," Jade replied awkwardly.
As Minnie walked off, Katie gazed at Jade, who sighed and rested their face in their palm.
"Are you okay?" Katie asked, walking over to them.
Jade inhaled and exhaled. "I'm fine, Kate," they replied. "Just, uh, can you get ready with me in my room?"
Katie's mouth parted, a bewildered croak escaping as a blush crept across her cheeks at the unexpected request, while also questioning Jade and Minnie's encounter, "S-sure." Katie smiled.
While Katie is finished dressing in her attire, a blood red sweatshirt with black graphic lettering, "Redrum," while in black bell bottoms and wearing worn out military boots.
She was adjusting her black eyeliner underneath her eye while talking to Jade, who was still in the bathroom getting ready, "I never thought of Minnie of many things but I'd never think they'd be your ex!?"
Jade came out of the bathroom, applying lotion to her face and hands while now in her outfit, a dark graphic long sleeve crop top with a heartagram while wearing a leather jacket over top, plum skirt flow pants, and dark ankle boots, with her hair halfway braided but stylized with the rest of her hair in two Afro-puffs.
"Well, I didn't think it would be a big deal," said Jade, "We've been talking pretty normally about..."not dating."
"I'm surprised they're aware we're dating and haven't turned full "evil ex." said Katie, finishing up his eyeliner and checking himself in the mirror.
"Ugh, I wish it wasn't like this—-why'd I wait so long to tell you." Jade put her face into her hands, sitting on the edge of her bed, "I'm sorry, love, I didn't want to make things awkward with me nor them. I just...," Jade sighed, "didn't want you to think we were secretly dating or whatever."
Katie, concerned, glanced back at Jade in distraught, standing and walking over to stand in front of her. Jade looked up at him, "You're not mad?" Jade questioned.
"Of course not," Katie replied, reaching his hand out, "I am a bit upset you didn't tell me beforehand, but besides that, I don't hate you or anything, love."
Jade's heart warmed from the unexpected comfort, their hand clutching Katie's and raising it to her cheek, "I'm glad you're not mad, my love," Jade's eyes tenderly gazed into Katie's, "I couldn't find the right moment to tell. With Minnie attending since we dated and then you coming into my life after she—-"
"Stop, stop," said Katie, both hands now against Jade's face, "It's okay. All of that is not going to affect us, nor does it matter. As long as we are together and we don't hide so much from each other."
Jade chuckled softly, "Thanks," Jade's hand reached the side of Katie's hair, pushing it back behind his ear, "And at least you don't have to become Scott Pilgrim any day." Jade giggled.
"Oh god, no," said Katie, smiling, "I wouldn't want to face an "evil ex" nor do I actually want to think of myself as a weirdo like him."
Jade and Katie laughed, their tender gazed licking back towards each other, "Now, are we going to have fun tonight?" asked Katie, smiling. "Hell yeah, we are," said Jade.
Katie nodded, "Love to hear." Both Jade and Katie placed their heads against each other, both saying in sync, "bonk."
As the sun still fell behind the trees, the Sinister Six, excluding Mason, were all ready for their night out. Everyone packed into Hanna's Kia, which had room to fit five, Hunter, Hanna, Dirk, Katie, and Jade, with Hunter in the passenger seat with the others in the four back seats.
A shuffle of alternative rock, R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, and Heavy Metal blasted for the twenty minute car ride to the restaurant. Everyone either sang along or scrolled through meme videos while showing them to each other.
The short trip made Katie feel at ease. She tolerated the music and her own crowed around her, besides her white noise cancelling earbuds drowning out partial of their laughter, singing, and chatter. The car arrived up to a traffic light, that shone yellow before shifting to red, which bathed the entire car but not fully inside.
Katie glared at the light, fighting off the imagination of her encounter with PAL's streamlined max robots. Katie gripped Jade's hand, glancing at what she scrolled through on her cell as she smiled.
Jade immediately took notice of the beaming red light and Katie's sweaty palm gripping hers, firmly gripping back as she continued to show Katie funny videos through her social media.
Before they could blink, they made it to the restaurant, in awe by the scent of Italian and American food that slithered into their noses as well as the large yellow and blue sign that said "Sam's House and Pizza."
They all entered, the food's growing stronger as well as their excitement. Just as they thought, there were classic arcade machines, pool tables, dart throw, and claw machines with larger than average prizes.
The interior was spacious and had plenty of customers enjoying their sports, alcohol, and moments with family and friends. The carpet even contained retro patterns, which made it ten times more nostalgic. The title of the establishment didn't make sense first, but the group understood now that their immediate thought was going over a friend's house for games and lunch in their youth.
A wide smile spread across Katie's face with Jade's also as they gazed at each other, happy to be together in likely the best restaurant they've been to.
The group was brought to a booth close to the window, sprinkles of water from the exterior hitting against it as the gang were given flipbook menus. From whole pies to handcrafted milkshakes and burgers, the menu was packed with the most appetizing dishes to date. Even the appetizers selection seemed like it would fill you instantly.
The group went with a helping of mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce, with Katie and Hunter to eat them without dipping. They were nearly gone when their large pizza with pepperoni, olives, jalapeños, and sausage arrived hot and smelling like heaven.
Indeed, there were garlic knots that were free to refill, the gang individually taking one as they enjoyed their slices.
They laughed and joked about, forgetting the work of becoming a future film maker and work generally.
Whenever Katie was anxious or content, his body would sway back and forth, especially when he enjoyed eating his favorite dish or snack. Him and Jade would often share their food, sometimes feeding it to each other in fun ways, but not as dramatic like in movies.
The group also took a few pictures as they were in the booth, with Hunter, Hanna, Katie, Jade, and Dirk each taking photos from their respective phones. After eating, they decided to play a bit of pool, taking turns with Dirk and Hunter betting each other.
The group eagerly took turns at the arcade machines, which were the classics such as PAC-MAN, Mortal Kombat, Street-Fighter, Galaga—-any game that was an eighties and nineties. While Jade, Hanna, and Hunter were Mortal Kombat pros, Katie and Dirk reigned as champions in Street-Fighter, beating anyone individually or as a team, and even together, it was dangerous for anyone to beat their score.
As the clouds tears grew heavier and drifted past evening, the gang were just beginning to feel their energy slowly fading. Left over food such as pizza and garlic knots were spared, while the others were ready to depart, not without taking final photos in a retro themed Photo Booth.
The last and individual batch of photos were of the only two love birds in the group, who took five photos with just cuddles, smiles, silly faces, laughter, and a tender kiss.
The group head grown weary and headed for the car, leaving at a decent time not too late after curfew. Hanna still took the wheel, sipping quite a bit on a lukewarm energy drink from the multipack in her trunk. Jade sat in the passenger's seat while Katie sat from behind still holding hands from across.
Hunter and Dirk were playing pool together from their phones, with Hunter being victorious. "This was probably the best night we've had ever." Dirk proclaimed, "And that restaurant was actually amazing—-I'm already thinking of writing a benevolent review."
"You write reviews?" questioned Jade, eyebrow raised, "I thought those were only for Karens or people who were just bored." Dirk grinned, "I could be one of those people."
"What, a Karen?" Katie chimed in. "Hell no," Dirk scoffed, "If I was, I'd write about how bright the carpet was—-which wasn't, and that's what a Karen would do: write about the harmless details."
Jade snickered, "That's so true," she smiled, "But seriously though, that was fun. Let's remind ourselves to go there again, but this time with Mason, Angie, and Minnie, maybe."
"Oh, totally," said Hanna, slowing down at a stop sign in a residential area, "And that place was like, the spot for the whenever we need comfort, or really just feel like a kid again."
"Would it be bad if I said it was better than Dave and Busters?" Hunter added, with the car going silent, "I'd come back there and strangle you, Hunty," said Hanna, "But I guess I shouldn't because...kind of see what you mean."
Hunter peaked his head in between Jade and Hanna, "But also, I guess you can say it's similar? With the video game arcades to the food, and really, this place was just built while Dave's been around for years. Sam's was a revisit to our childhood and how we've made the friends we made back then."
"And that it also brought us, as friends, together to remember those days, huh?" Katie added.
Hunter snapped and pointed to Katie, "Exactly! And I bet you our parents would feel the same way, considering ours were likely born between the seventies and eighties."
Katie chuckled, "Me and Jade were talking about that earlier today!" she said, smiling, "Heck, maybe we all should have our parents come along next time."
The group was close to the school, Hanna finally heading onto a one way road leading up to it, "Angie should totally come along next time, though." Hunter suggested, "Then I could try and beat her in a round of Mortal Kombat since she's already whooped my ass several times before."
Jade snickered, "You think "we" haven't gotten whooped by her before?" Jade sighed, "You are just awaiting the devil's wrath, my friend."
"She wouldn't withstand my Raiden, dude...unless," Hunter paused, "Who's her mai—or wait, which version are they better at, because I can still take them, no arcade machine required."
Hanna peaked away from the road to speak to Hunter, "Well, from what I rememb—"
The moment Hanna's eyes were away from the road, Jade discovered a deer come through, glaring right at the car's bright lights. Jade yelled, "HANNA LOOK OUT!"
Hanna turned and slammed the breaks, only to not stop in time as the deer hit the bumper and rolled down a hill into the woods.
Everyone in the car jerked forward as the car came to a screeching halt, nearly close to the hill. No air bags or screams of horror or pain, just utter silence and panting, "I-Is everyone okay?" Hanna asked, in shock.
"Yeah, we're fine, Han," Dirk replied, rubbing the back of their head from hitting their seat. Hunter had his arm reached over Katie, slowly removing it as he and Katie caught their breath.
Hanna got out of the car along with the others, surrounding the bumper to discover a dent and some blood, "FUCK!" Hanna cried, arms over her head as she paced back and forth.
Katie's eyes fixed on the blood splattered across the bumper. Her body went numb as the reality of the sudden collision sank in. She had expected a quiet, uneventful return to school, but now the dread of nearly losing her closest friends and girlfriend overwhelmed her.
Hunter and Jade attempted to calm Hanna down as she continued to pace around out of frustration, "Han, it's okay," said Hunter, "At least it's just the bumper, this can be fixed, no problem!" The reinforcement suddenly clatters on the ground, "__ish?" Hunter awkwardly shrugged his shoulders.
Hanna let out a frustrated sigh, rubbing her hands against her face as she paced around again. "As if I'm going to just ask the damn deer for its insurance," she said sarcastically, shaking her head. "I wasn't prepared for this at all!"
"Look, I'm sorry I distracted you," said Hunter, standing into front of Hanna, "I can help you with this, if need be."
"Hunter, it wasn't your fault, stop it," said Hanna, pinching her fingers between her eyes, "It's my car, anyway. I'm just glad it wasn't a person or actually another car."
While the four grew frustrated as they conversed, Katie overheard the faint cries of the deer from down the hill. The memory of discovering a deer with her father in the wilderness flashed in her mind—-how they had quietly observed the animal and its young.
Without hesitation, Katie hurried down the hill, turning on her phone's flashlight as she went. The deer's cries grew louder as she approached, covering one ear with her unoccupied hand and became horrified to find half of the deer's body drenched in blood, lying nearly motionless.
"Please, calm down," Katie said soothingly, slowly moving her hand towards the injured deer. She remembered the thrill of closely encountering one in her youth. "I'm so sorry."
It was as if the deer sensed her gentle reassurance. It began to settle, allowing Katie to tenderly stroke its slightly fuzzy neck. Though different from the deer she had seen with her father, the moment still felt calming.
"Katie!?" Jade's voice called from above. "Where'd you go?"
Katie flinched as if she had just remembered where she was, even thinking why she was away from the light above.
Katie started for the hill, for a sudden rustling behind her to stop her in her tracks.
She turned to flash her light. The deer had vanished.
Katie's heart raced as she froze up in fear. Suddenly, a large, dirty beige claw came into view.
A sharp gasp escaped from her and before she could climb further, the claw grabbed her leg, sending her phone flying out her hand and hitting the dirt with a soft thud. Her glasses managed to slip off her face before she collapsed back to the ground, her leg being tugged forcefully and was dragged back down the hill and further into the woods. Her terrified scream echoed as the others rushed down and followed her voice.
"KATIE!" Jade cried as she ran, the others following behind.
Katie's cries and screams grew louder as they got close.
Katie couldn't see a thing, without light nor her extra eyes, as the beast snarled and scratched, tearing her clothes. Her face and body burned, the wounds she now had pulsing and sensing more of the cold air entering them. She continued to cry, kick, and scream, as if it would stop the beast’s attack.
A sudden rush of adrenaline shot into her chest as she felt the burning sensation of the beast’s teeth sinking into her right shoulder.
A painful yell escaped her throat. "GET OFF ME!" Katie tried hard to push the beast's head away, but nothing worked, not even a few weak punches.
Her fingers dug into the mushy dirt, the pain she felt unbearable. She then felt a stick that she hurried and grabbed, jabbing it right into the side of the beast's face, causing it to yelp and release her.
The strong smell of rust entered her nostrils as her hand gripped her shoulder, her fingers digging into the bite marks. It was too wet for Katie’s liking.
Blood continued to flow out as she tried to flee. Her body had weakened from the lacerations and agony, her ability to run and even breathe merely impossible as she collapsed almost every step.
Jade's voice grew close as well as their footsteps. "JADE I'M HERE!” Katie cried, his broken voice piercing the air. Tears uncontrollably poured from his eyes, tasting them with the metallic taste that lingered in his mouth. “PLEASE HE—!" The beast dragged him back over, Katie gripping the soft ground with all her might.
He was faced with the beast again, it's glowing white eyes to likely be the lasting thing Katie would ever see.
This was it. Fuck. Why her. She couldn’t fight back. She couldn’t move.
Cry. That was all she could do.
Her ear rung out, a deafening noise practically making her brain want to rupture. She couldn’t hear a thing.
Her vision started to blur, but she still say the beast ready to take another fatal bite. But before it could, Jade had ran in with a large, thick branch, hitting the animal backward. "FUCKER!" They yelled, voice now hoarse. They threw another blow of the stick when beast charged and roared.
Katie barely saw a thing, but still recognized Jade facing the beast with the stick. She looked like a badass.
Katie wanted to hug her tightly, tell her how much she loved her.
Hanna, Hunter, and Dirk finally caught up with Jade. One flashlight they had shone over the dirty beige monster, it’s fur wet and a mess and red spread across its mouth. It was softly writhing on the ground, and it gave the gang plenty of time to pull Katie up.
"NO." Jade loudly snapped, gesturing everyone to back off. Jade threw Katie's arm over their shoulder, Katie groaning in pain.
They all hurried and sped out of the woods and up the hill, reaching back to the car's light without daring to look back.
"I've already called for an ambulance!" Dirk said, out of breath. "They should be six minutes away!"
Jade only focused on Katie, who was still bleeding and in clear shock.
Her chest rose up and down painfully and hard. Everything around her barely inaudible.
"That's it, Katie, breath!” Jade held his face, feeling his shaken breath bathe theirs. It smelt like blood. “You just gotta stay with us until they come okay?" Katie couldn’t speak. His throat stung each time he’d swallow or even let out the slightest noise. He clutched onto Jade firmly as they led him to the car.
There were lacerations around her arms, legs, and some around her face that were still bleeding out, the blood soaking into his torn clothes.
The flowing wouldn’t stop. Even his nose was leaking crimson.
"Jade, bring him over here!" Hanna asked, opening her trunk, "We can try and stop the bleeding until they arrive!" Dirk and Hunter came over to assist Jade as Katie glared at his hands.
His heartbeat thumped and grew louder in his eardrums while the sound of a high pitched whine buzzed.
His body felt heavy. Weaker. It started to slip out of Jade’s grasp, his hand weakly releasing them.
Jade still had a hold on Katie as he started to tumble, his face scarily pale. "KATIE!?" Jade exclaimed, her voice cracking. "NO NO NO, STAY WITH ME, YOU HEAR ME!? DON'T LEAVE YET. DON'T YOU DARE!"
Darkness started to obscure Katie's vision, the high pitched ringing deafening. Jade cried once more as tears started to flow down their face and the others gathering around to help him stay awake, "KATIE!" Jade shouted once more.

Chapter 4: The Sole Survivor
Summary:
she lied still in her bed as she zoned out of reality, with brief flashbacks of her attack and her own silent thoughts reminding her of her illogical actions. The pain from each injury reminded her of how death came so close—-the phantom sensation of the beast's teeth seeping through her flesh.
Her eyes wanted to shed with misery and regret, wanting to grip and scratch her skin but remained motionless, unable to remove her gaze from the dim ceiling. Her hand gripped her blanket out of internal strain as she began to hyperventilate quietly and gradually.

Chapter Text
September 30th, 2023
Katie saw blurred flashes of herself being moved by paramedics onto the gurney and into the ambulance as if her life were flashing before her eyes.
She could still hear the echos of Jade's panicked voice breaking through the buzz within her eardrums, her friends worried gazes tracking her into the ambulance, which they weren't allowed to enter. Accompanied by the buzzing was her rickety and slowly beating heart, it making it almost unclear for her to hear anyone and anything.
"Katie Mitchell," said a male paramedic's nasal voice, "Can you hear me?" the dark silhouette of the paramedic hovered over, holding a BVM up to Katie's mouth. Her tense lungs started to soften as the extra air aiding them did its magic, feeling less of the deadly pressure that weighted on her chest.
The man's assuring voice continued, "If you can, my name is Taeo and you're being transported to the hospital. I want you to do me a favor and try to stay awake for me, alright?—-you're going to be okay."
The blares of the medical siren rang out all the way to the hospital, and thoughout, Katie lied unresponsive. Her vision remained a blur with her eyelids struggling to stay open.
Katie didn't want to think of it, but the situation, in her mind, couldn't be believable—she was actually on the brink of death.
Did she deserve this? Was this punishment?
Her friends. Jade. She had to live. No. She needed to, even if she wasn't perfect for the world.
How stupid could she be. Rather an embarrassment, despite wanting just silence. Peace. Was that too much to ask?
Back at the incident site, Jade, Hanna, Hunter, and Dirk were interrogated individually by police, each telling what had occurred:
"I didn't see the deer coming," Hanna explained, her words jumbling out, "I-It had popped out of nowhere when I spoke to my friend for just a second."
"Before we knew it, my friend had yelled, "LOOK OUT!" and my other friend, with the l-l-long chestnut hair, the one who drove, hit the brakes but didn't stop in time to avoid hitting the deer." Dirk ruffled a hand through their hair as they licked their lips, "And while we're talking outside, we notice a f-few moments later that Katie was gone."
"The one driving, Hanna, was talking to me when it all happened," Hunter explained, his eyes filled with terror, "She only looked at me for one second before we got into this situation," Hunter swallowed, "While we were out of the car talking, that's when we noticed Katie wasn't with us, so we checked around then down the hill, to see she's comforting the deer, I think..."
"W-we had found her down the hill when the animal came out and dragged her away," Jade explained, "She must've went to check to see if maybe it was a person Han hit o-or if it was dead." Jade licked her lips before taking a deep breath, "Then me and the others chased after her. I'm not sure what it was but we definitely were at the wrong place at the wrong time—-We didn't even think something like this would happen."
Down the hill, Animal control and other officers shone their flashlights around the site, preparing for the beast to make itself known, only to yet find anything but nature. However, Katie's DNA and the beast's claw marks remained evidential.
"Well, this is a very troubling situation," said the thick, peachy officer, putting away his notepad, "What I'd like to ask is why you all are out here past your curfew? The officer directed his thick thumb towards the direction of the school, "All four of you are college students, aren't ya?"
"Obviously, we were coming back from an outing "in time" before curfew hit," Jade clarified, "We just ran into unwanted trouble and my girlfriend must've gotten overwhelmed," Jade sighed, "She gets that way a lot. A-and I don't think that's relevant to what we've just witnessed, sir."
"Oh it is relevant, missy," barked the officer, hand over his hips, "Because you all should've known it's dangerous to be goin' down hills and staying out late." the officer turned the moment the flashlights from the search group brightened coming up the hill, "Now look at that, we've seemed to have found nothing about that animal, but as I was saying, no one should be out here this late, anyway. Hittin' a deer or not, think about what else is around you first."
Dirk inched close, cocking a brow and a burning sensation forming in their chest that almost set them off, "Well," Dirk began. “It's already been terrorizing our school and other random people, and now it's attacked our friend and nobody's even put much into actually finding it."
The officer pointed his fat finger at Dirk, his tone stern, "I'll remind you that I give the orders here," he snapped, "And it sounds like your friend should learn how not to lead herself into danger."
The officer finally walked off, leaving Dirk fumed, balling their fists until their nails caused a sharp pain in their palm. They took a step forward as if they were prepared to hit the officer from behind, which did lingered in their mind for a moment. Hanna lied a hand on their shoulder, cautiously alerting them silently, "don't do anything stupid."
The anger in their gaze met Hanna's, hers filled with frustration and dejection.
They steered their gaze back to the officer's direction, "Pig," Dirk muttered under their breath, moving Hanna's hand away. "None of them know jack-shit about how to do their job."
Hanna nodded softly. She looked behind at her Kia to think maybe, "it was all a dream", but her bumper still lied like a dead carcass in the road. Even thought she wasn't allowed, she walked over to it, cupping her mouth. "Shit" she muttered under her breath, escaping out bitterly.
Hanna glanced at the blue and red hues that flowed next to her. Her eyes then followed dark crimson spots beside the trunk that shown under the colors including a yellow evidence marker.
Katie's blood.
A soft gasp escaped from her, standing cold as her brain replayed the incident in her mind, the guilt she felt flooded her like the chill in her veins. Her stomach nauseously twisted at the thought, "please be alive."
The sound of a car door closing broke the tense atmosphere that hovered over. She turned behind her to investigate and found Jade in the passenger seat through the window. She wanted to open the door to tell her the car was off limits, but couldn't bear to speak to her as she felt the same guilt weigh on her again, her hand close to touching the door handle hesitantly.
Jade sat crossed armed, the tremors in her hands making her lose her grasp and readjust. The tears she desperately tried to hold back spilled down her cheeks without warning. She let out a strangled, exasperated huff as she quietly held her hands over her eyes.
The atmosphere grew quiet and still, with only the muffled chatter and rummage from police wrapping up their duties, audible yet hushed.
Back outside, Hanna still stood motionless, lips parted and her breathing ragged yet steady.
Hunter and Dirk came over, Hunter to rest his hand on her back gently, for Hanna to flinch.
"Are you okay?" Hunter asked, his dejected glance finding her petrified eyes still glaring at the Katie's blood next to her car.
Hunter remembered Jade's screams, including Katie's blood still lingering on her clothes. A pained expression formed on his face as he dryly swallowed.
"I'll keep her company for a minute." Hunter offered, his fingers wrapping around the handle door to the back.
Dirk wrapped an arm around Hanna softly, her to lean close as their warmth calmed her. "Meet up with us at my car."
Hunter nodded, watching as Dirk and Hanna walked down the rest of the road back to the school. Hunter pulled the car handle door, flopping into the seat before pulling the interior door handle to the mute the outside.
All he could hear was the ragged and uneven breath that emitted from Jade, her refusing to look behind.
A beat.
"What do you want, Hunter?" hissed Jade, agitated.
"Nothing, really." Hunter said softly, leaning back while rubbing his hands against the soft cotton of his jeans, " We can't really be in this car—it's technically evidence now. And thought I'd check on you before we leave."
Nothing but a sniffle. Jade continuously rubbed away the left over tears that flowed out every few seconds, even whenever she blinked.
"This is all my fault," Jade murmured, keeping her gaze away from Hunter's.
Hunter blinked, "No it's not," He assured.
"Oh, really?" said Jade with a bitter tone, turning finally towards Hunter. She then spat, "Katie nearly died and I wasn't there with her. How could she be alright!?" Jade glared at Hunter with misty eyes.
"And do you think she hates you after this?" Hunter argued, "I cannot and shouldn't assume what you're going through, but don't blame yourself for what happened."
Jade's froze, her breathing less ragged. She let out a heavy sigh as she rubbed her face, "I just," Jade left her mouth open briefly as if more words were to spill out, but nothing came.
She turned back to face the pitch black road, softly pressing her fingers over her lips. She huffed out a shuttered breath, her mind replaying the incident in her mind and reminding her of the blood still on her clothes and hands, refusing to acknowledge it.
Katie shouldn't have went down there.
The deer was already on its death bed, so why would she go? Jade thought she should've been there.
Hunter gently placed his hand on Jade's shoulder, her to slightly flinch, but eventually recognized the assurance he wanted to provide. The tension in her shoulders only softened lightly.
Hunter released, leaning back slowly as his soft yet troubled gaze turned to dark ceiling. He let out a deep, slow breath, trying to distract himself from the events that happened with the still silence around him keeping him and Jade calm.
There was a beat.
Until finally, Hunter and Jade are walking back to the school where Dirk and Hanna were conversing outside while leaning against Dirk's silver honda. Dirk's eyes caught movement and leaned off the car, recognizing the silhouettes to be his friends.
"You both alright?" Dirk asked, walking up close.
Jade approached with her arms crossed, "We're fine." A faint smile lightly tugged her mouth.
Dirk nodded as they noticed the red on Jade's clothes. "Did you want to change before we leave?" Dirk pointed a thumb at the school.
Jade didn't make eye contact, but nodded softly.
Dirk opened up his phone case and grabbed out a card with his student information and photograph that looked close to a mugshot.
Both Jade and Dirk walked up to the entrance, Dirk pressing their card on a security device that beeped, flashing green. The door created a satisfying click and allowing Jade inside.
Jade sped straight to her dormitory, using a key from her keychain that had cherries and a lightning bolt dangling from it, unlocking her door to the eerily quiet space.
Her palms felt sticky and rough, and then she remembered.
Her blood was on her hands.
Jade glared at her red stained palms, the tremble in her hands to worsen.
She hurried into the bathroom where she washed off the blood, the drain swallowing light red water. As she washed and rinsed, it started to come off at its own pace.
Her chest tightened as her heart ached. She clutched the sink as her reflection stared back at her.
Her stomach churned as bile reached into her throat, beads of sweat dripping off her head.
"She's going to be okay," she mumbled to herself.
After at least five deep breaths, she left the bathroom retrieve a dark tank top and sweatpants, tossing her blood covered clothes into a clothes basket.
She looked at the tank top with second thoughts dancing within her mind, her fingers brushing against the faded, thin scars along her arms.
The public didn't have to see them.
And with them, it felt like they were sins.
Finally, Jade changed into a soft colored long sleeve with the hem tucked into her grey sweat pants.
She left the building, returning to the car and sitting in the passengers seat next to Dirk.
The GPS gave the directions on Dirk's phone propped up on a claw designed for phone-free driving.
Jade sat quietly, still struck with disbelief. The entire car deafening silent until Dirk turned the key in the ignition, springing the car to life. They wrapped their hands over the steering wheel, taking in a large breath as they drove off.
At a stop light, Dirk glanced over at Jade, still silently brooding. They wrapped their fingers around Jade's palm. Jade glanced down at her hand, warmer as if her beloved was still with her, then looked at Dirk, not uttering a word. "She's going to be alright." Dirk assured her.
Somehow, Jade couldn't believe it. Yet another part of her wanted to, as the last time she saw Katie’s state, the light nearly left her eyes.
Jade's worrisome gaze softened, looking back at the quiet road as she stroked her thumb gently against Dirk's hand still wrapped around hers. The car moved again the moment the light bathed the car green.
The four arrived at LifeCenter hospital. They sped to the front entrance with the doors sliding open automatically to a lightly busy work space, filled with patients waiting to check in.
Some were wearing bold yellow stickers that said in black bold, "Visitor." Anyone could know when you were in an actual medical facility if the air lingered with disinfectant, antiseptic, and the faint undertone of body odor, which wasn't unpleasantly terrible, but actually quite assuring in a sense. It made it feel as if survivors of an apocalypse entered a safe haven.
The group approached the receptionist desk, confronting a young male with "Dermon" printed on his white, rectangular name tag. He appeared like he hadn’t had sleep in days, but still looked presentable, especially in his mid 30s. His Afro had a few tiny coils scattered and had a little, dark beard coming in. "Hi, can I help you?" He asked, his voice low and raw.
"H-hi, we're looking for our friend," said Hanna, "K-k-Katie Mitchell, is she registered?"
"Oh, let me take a look-see," Dermon first typed in Katie's last name, scrolling down several patient's names to then immediately find hers, "Seems like she was just put into the system," he replied, "And is still being treated in room"7-1-1-2."
The receptionist pointed towards the hall next to him, for Jade to immediately hurry down and left and right to numbers listed by even and odds. Dermon called out for her to come back, but all she was looking for was Katie's room, blocking out everyone else's voices. After traveling further down, she eventually discovered the room on her right, where she found doctors still attending to her injuries while trying to keep her spiking heart rate in a healthy state.
Her pastel green sports bra had been the only thing topped on her, with her now torn sweatshirt cut through, and leaving her flushed, hemorrhaging bite and other cuts and bruises exposed to treatment with a BVM cupped over her mouth. From what Jade could overhear, Katie needed two stitches only on her stomach and left arm, with other abrasions around her arms and face treated with regular antibiotics.
Jade tried to kept her distance as her heart filled with trepidation. She then inched forward, only for Dermon to step in and push her back gently. "Aye, Ma'am," he said, standing in front of her, "You cannot go in there, I'm sorry,"
"B-b-but I want to be by—-" Jade stammered, for Dermon to interrupt, "She's going to be fine," Dermon gestured her towards the waiting area, "You and your friends can go sit do—-"
Suddenly, a low steady pitch sounded within "7-1-1-2," the heart rate alarm blaring and alerting other medical personnel.
"NO," Jade cried out as she ran from Dermon, for Dirk, Hanna, and Hunter to catch up and help him hold her back. As the three were holding back tears, Jade desperately tried to crawl out of their grasp as she wept.
***
Pale sunshine peaked through gaps in the autumn trees, almost every ray bathing Katie's young face. Whenever the blue sky came in view, she’d get the opportunity to admire the beauty, despite her vision being sensitive.
Katie sat on Rick's shoulders, sitting front row to the forests natural autumn beauty, with the steady, cool breeze grazing against her skin. The trees danced with the chill breeze as the dead leaves crunched beneath Rick and Linda's feet.
"The woods are always young," said Linda, observing nature's beauty along side her young daughter and husband while carrying another member of the family—-currently the size of a pepper.
"Even after the sun sets," Rick added, deeply touched by the sight of autumn's arrival.
A question left Katie to wonder, "Why do the leaves change color?" she asked with a light, innocent voice.
"It's more due to the whether conditions, sweetheart," Rick replied, "But with how me and your mother think about it, it's a cycle of transition—-making room for something new in life and letting go of the past. At least, that's what I thought when we first started life here."
"We used to live here, daddy?" Katie puzzled down at him , "I don't remember that."
Rick chuckled, "That's because you were just a tater tot when we left."
Katie gazed back up at the sky. "Wow," she said with admiration, exposing her baby teeth with a smile ear to ear, "That's super amazing! And I like tater tots!"
Linda giggled. She continued to observe the warm sights as she thought more about her past in the woods with Rick. "Coming here reminds us of the days me and your father had spent before and after we brought you into the world." The memory of Rick and Linda’s past settled in her mind like a nostalgic dream. "It's helped us leave behind what held us back from growth. You don't understand what that means, but hopefully when you get older, you will."
"Okay, mommy," said Katie, "I'll wait until I'm bigger." Katie looked back down to her father, wrapping her arms around his head, shutting her eyes, "I wish this day could last a while."
Rick and Linda laughed as they continued their stroll, soon reaching to a hushed water stream that flowed to the left. The three got close, gazing at their warped reflections. Katie giggled as she was fascinated by her reflection as it created silly faces for her.
Abruptly, a group of birds flew out of a tree nearby, Katie quickly covering her small ears. She squeezed her eyes shut while Rick assured her, "It's alright, kid," he said, also covering one ear as Linda tensed up also, "Just some bi—"
Rick's gaze focused to a deer on the other side of the water stream, with it staring back at the family. "Katie," Rick whispered, pointing at the animal, "Look over there."
With her hands still protecting her ears, Katie opened her eyes to the young deer, it enjoying nature's tranquil. "It's staring back at us, daddy." She whispered.
Linda pulled out a bag of apple slices from Rick's backpack, "Maybe we could give it a snack?" Linda shook the bag around Katie, for her to grab and glare at it before returning her gaze back to the deer, tension building within her body.
"Will it bite?" Katie asked, troubled. Rick brought Katie down from his shoulders, "No, No, sweetheart," Rick assured her, "I'll stay close to you."
Rick placed her back on her feet as he found a nearby broken log, decorated with moss, and used it as a crossway above the water stream. "One foot at a time," said Rick, holding her hands up until she made it to the other side and Rick right behind her, Linda remaining on the other side, observing happily.
Once they made it across, they slowly and quietly approached the deer who still hadn't moved an inch. As they got closer, the deer eventually inched toward them, Katie still uneasy of what may occur. "It's coming closer," she whispered anxiously.
Rick stopped in placed, holding Katie's shoulders and squatting down to her level, "Don't worry, sweetheart. Here, take a slice out the bag." he gently commanded, "And just hold it out, like this." Rick held out his arm, for Katie to mimic him.
The deer drew near, Katie's hand slightly trembling as she gripped the apple slice. She shut her eyes and turned away, sensing breathily air on her hand as the deer harmlessly chewed on the slice, using its mouth to slide it out of her grasp. Katie looked cautiously back at the animal, the tension in her shoulders vanishing.
"Way to go, honey!" Rick felicitated, "Now you see your hands still attached, right?" Both Katie and Rick softly chuckled, watching the deer return back to its own path.
"And now we let it leave happily," said Rick, "Without disturbing its peace." Katie watched the deer leave, wonder filled in her eyes and refusing to turn her gaze away.
She had expected aggression from the deer, but it must have sensed the welcoming nature Rick and Katie offered. It made her feel calmer—-open-minded.
Throughout her life, she felt as if she were a baby deer still learning to live like any other person she met. But in the middle of it, loneliness only shadowed. Katie tried always to be herself but it never got her the right people, despite her family.
It was likely just in nature that others are not willing for friendship, or that the universe naturally has its ways of life with others. But she did have friends and a wonderful partner, but sometimes, she wished she could have had more kindness brought to her before she met them.
***
October 1st, 2023 (Overnight)
Katie awoke with a start, the dim lights above her intensely obscuring her vision briefly. The heart monitor beside her beeped at a rhythm, her heart rate falling back to normal as she calmed.
She gandered at the IV's cannula in her left arm, then the pulse oximeter clamped on her right finger, including a bracelet with her name and other information.
White bandages were decorated around her arms, including her legs, her fingers brushing against one thick bandage strip on her left cheek. Her body was covered in a blue hospital gown that hardly covered the rear with grey grip socks warming her feet along with a heavy beige hospital blanket.
She sat up with a sudden ache shooting through her right shoulder—-the same area the bite lied. She brought down the side of her gown to see it properly bandaged in white, brushing her fingers against the smooth strip.
"How am I alive?" She thought, the attack quickly flashing in her mind. She shut her eyes tightly to rid of the memory before returning back to the hospital room, hardly with lively color. It only had one window, a blue curtain for privacy, another hospital bed unoccupied and three visitor chairs to her left, one of them occupied by Jade, who was asleep in one in an uncomfortable position.
A pricking sensation shot from Katie's bite wound to her ribs as she reached for Jade. Katie clutched her side and hissed, startling Jade awake. Blinking their eyes to the light, their groggy vision adjusted to the hospital room, where they found Katie finally conscious.
"Katie!" Jade said as a wide smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. She rushed to her side with opening arms, only to hesitate as her eyes caught the bandages. Instead, their hand clutched around Katie's. "You don't know how happy I am to see you alive right now." Jade's eyes began to mist, trying to blink the sadness away.
"Me too," said Katie smiling weakly as she caressed her hand on Jade's arm, "But you and the others are okay, right? W-where are the others, actually?"
"Down in the waiting room," Jade sighed, "Two visitors are allowed at a time, and the guys insisted I see you alone first." Jade smiled. "But how are you feeling, my love?"
As Jade let go, Katie thought briefly, "I don't even know "what" to feel right now," she said as she stared at the wall across from her, "I'm still wondering how I'm even..."here." Katie glanced at her bandages, "I probably shouldn't even question."
Jade placed her hand on Katie's open palm, "It's likely best not to, love," Jade assured, "It'll just add stress."
Katie sighed as she flopped back, the sharp pain returning, causing her to recoil, "I seriously need to be careful," said Katie as she chuckled weakly.
"Yeah, be careful," said Jade, reaching for the entrance, "I'm going to get your doctor, I'll be right back." Katie nodded her head.
The once-bustling hospital had finally settled into faint chatter, patient's heartbeats in check. The daily overnight paperwork filing had everyone like quiet busy bees as doctors and nurses wandered about, checking up also on patients every couple hours.
Jade came up to the receptionist desk to ask, "Is Dr. Shale still around?"
"Yes, but she's with another patient at the moment," A receptionist lady at the front desk took over Dermon's spot as he had clocked out moments earlier. She had a peachy face and a long brown ponytail, her name tag in bold with heart shaped stickers around it saying, "Bailey." "I can page her, though, but you'll still have to wait." The lady grabbed a small grey device beside her while Jade walked back to the waiting area.
Jade took a few deep breaths as she made it back over to the next hall where Dirk, Hanna, and Hunter napped beside each other.
Jade lied a hand on Dirk's shoulder and softly pushed, Dirk snorting awake, "Oh, shit," said Dirk, alarmed. "Hey, u-uh," Dirk stood, pressing their hands against their back, "H-how's Katie—-is he awake?"
"Yeah, he's fine," Jade replied, "He's still in a bit of shock, though. I just asked for his doctor to come and check on him." Jade crossed her arms as she let out a deep sigh, "Hopefully all of us can just recover and forget about this after a few weeks. How are you holding up? "
Dirk shrugged, "I'm here, as always." Dirk sank back into the waiting chair, warming their hands in their sweatshirt pocket, "And relived to know Katie's among the living, thank god. Would it be too late to see her right now?"
"It's already midnight," said Hunter, his voice groggy. He then stood and stretched an arm towards the ceiling, "So it’s likely already too late, and Jade pretty much got most of the update about Katie.”
Jade chuckled softly, "If we don't, then there's always tomorrow.”
Hanna, sitting anxiously beside Hunter, had a hand trembling over her mouth. Eventually, she stood and sped down the dim hall without warning, her arms wrapped around herself.
Everyone watched with concern shifting their softened expression. “Han?” Jade called out. An eyebrow arched. “Is she okay?”
Dirk sighed, “She kind of…blames herself for the accident.”
Jade’s eyes grew wide, “What?” Jade’s voice cracked, quiet and worried. “W-why?”
“She didn’t want me to tell you, but it seems to be taking more of a toll on her. I can go talk to her.”
Before Dirk could stand, Jade threw a hand out, “No,” she said, “I’ll go. You guys just text me when the doctor comes.”
Jade paced down the quiet hall that made her feel as if she stepped into an indie horror game. Despite the welcoming atmosphere and medical personnel around every corner, it was like a big, dark dream she couldn’t escape from.
The further she walked, the more concerned she got about Hanna, still not finding her in sight. Until finally, she came around another corner to find her squatting against a wall, obscuring her face and legs inside her oversized black hoodie with a few strands of her long chestnut hair dyed a faded lavender at the ends lied out from the sides.
A soft sniffle came from the dark ball, Jade’s heart aching at Hanna’s state. She came around to squat beside her, bringing her knees to her chest. “Hanna?” Jade called out softly.
Hanna slightly flinched at the sound of her name, like she had forgotten she wasn’t alone.
Jade pinched at Hanna’s hoodie, pulling it back gently. Hanna’s face lifted into view, her eyes red from the quiet sobbing and avoiding Jade’s worrisome gaze.
A soft gasp escaped from Jade, her heart nearly shattering. “What’s wrong, Han?”
Hanna sniffed, “I thought you’d be mad at me.” She wiped a single, lingering tear rolling down her face.
Jade furrowed her brows, “W-why would I be?”
“I was the one driving.” Hanna said, her voice cracking, “If I hadn’t, none of us would have in this mess and Katie wouldn’t—“
“Hey, hey.” Jade moved closer, wrapping an arm around her. “Now don’t think like that.” Jade’s hand rubbed against Hanna’s warm shoulder as she let out a heavy sigh. “And if it makes you feel better, I blamed myself for a second.”
Hanna’s eyelids slightly raised at the sentence, still keeping her eye contact to a minimum.
“I thought about how I should’ve been close to Katie when it happened and wished so badly that It should’ve been me. I still feel this way but I just had to keep my mind away from the stress.” Jade glanced at Hanna, who dug her face back into her knees.
"Look.” Jade moved in front of Hanna, placing her hands on both her shoulders and tugging gently for her to stand. Hanna eventually stood. “We did end up in a bad situation, but it's not your fault." Jade grabbed Hanna's hands, "And right now, we need to just…focus on Katie, okay?"
The guilt Hanna carried grew deeper, keeping her eye contact to a minimum, "I know," she said softly, "But she could've died because of me and...we can't lose him. I don't want to lose him—-all because I decided to look away for two seconds."
"Han, stop.” said Jade, moving her arms around Hanna, shutting her in a warm embrace. “I’m not mad at you, Katie is okay, and we’re all here together.”
Hanna hesitated, but eventually wrapped her arms around Jade, sniffling into her shoulder. “Okay.”
Jade released Hanna, her hand squeezing hers. “Up to go back to the others?”
Hanna finally glanced at Jade’s warm, assuring eyes, a smile softly forming. “Yeah.” Hanna said, her voice low but soft.
As the two were taking their time heading back, Dirk discussed of a burning question sitting in their mind, “I know it's still a bad time but...what even was that?"
Hunter rose a brow, "Are you talking about what—?"
"What attacked Katie, yes," Dirk replied, "We all know it wasn't any type of wild feline nor a bear...or a wolf. No animal could be that huge, especially if it were a few inches taller than a bear!"
"Well, whatever it was, it doesn't matter right now," Hunter added. "Hopefully it'll learn to not come back after Jade had whacked some sense into it."
"I bet it did gain some," said Dirk, "And maybe those "officers" could get some, too and actually do their fucking job...we've already lost five people and it would've been six if Katie didn't—," Dirk held their tongue a moment, a heavy breath huffing out their nose. “They should've been more concerned about the situation other than treating it as a typical investigation."
"You're right," Jade agreed as she approached with Hanna beside her. "You're so, so, right. And we all know that sooner or later, we'll be next."
"I don't want to lose any of you guys. You're too important...and stupid to lose." Dirk teasing grin tugged at their lips.
Everyone softly giggled, relief washing over them along with the warm and secure bond they held.
The hospital doors opened to Mason, who finally arrived, rushing in and making eye contact with the others immediately.
"Holy shit," he exclaimed, concern painted on his face. "How is she?"
"She's awake and well," Hunter answered, "We're just waiting for the doc, now."
"W-w-what about you guys? Are you hurt? Mason inquired.
"Mentally, yes." Dirk added, smirking as they crossed their arms.
Finally, Katie's doctor, Dr. Shale, approached the group, a clipboard in hand and a stethoscope around her neck.
Her dark brown hair slicked over her shoulders while her thick, hooked nose became the most noticeable and unique feature on her face. Her caramel skin blended with the burgundy lipstick and eyeshadow she wore to match with her dark brown eyes. She appeared young, yet carried a few wrinkles.
"Hello, you all," said Dr. Shale with a thick, assuring voice, "Am I interrupting something?"
Back in Katie's room, she lied still in her bed as she zoned out of reality, with brief flashbacks of her attack and her own silent thoughts reminding her of her illogical actions.
The world started to close around her, every noise and voice heard in every direction waned until Jade's assuring voice called to her. "Katie?" she asked, "Are you okay?" Jade's hand rested on Katie's, her warmth pulsating against it and expelling the tension within Katie's body.
Katie stared into Jade's dark eyes before she spoke, "Y-y-yeah, I'm fine." She replied weakly before she glanced at the door, discovering Dirk, Hanna, Mason, and Hunter coming in smiling with relief.
Katie's face lit the moment they came in, Dirk making their way to provide a quick, gentle embrace around her. "I was her best friend first, so I get the first hug." They announced. Katie patted their back before Dirk released her, smiling softly down at her.
The others hurried over to give Katie gentle embraces as they tried to hold back tears. Hanna didn't want to let go, "I'm so glad you're alright," She said tearfully.
"You guys are okay," Katie smiled weakly, wiping away tears, "I'm surprised they let you all in at one time."
Dr. Shale chimed in, "Well I thought since visiting hours are over and only one of them got to visit you, why not let them all for a minute?" Shale smiled warmly, approaching closer to the side of Katie's bed.
"Now it seems you're doing well, Katie," said Dr. Shale, "I will have to do a physical check up, if that's alright with you." Katie nodded softly. "Great. And now, you five do have to go now, I'm sorry." Dr. Shale looked at the four with regret, watching as they all, silently troubled, were about to leave the room before Jade ran back to Katie's side to press her lips against his for a couple of seconds. "Call or text me later." Jade grasped Katie's hand softly with Katie to do the same as the two smiled warmly up at each other, Katie not wanting to let go.
Eventually, Jade left Dr. Shale and Katie alone, Dr. Shale moved by Katie and Jade's tender interaction with a hand on her chest. "You both are so lucky to have each other," she said, "Your other friends, too."
Katie hummed softly, "They're all I have," he said softly.
"Not so good befriending others, huh?" asked Dr. Shale as she prepared her stethoscope. Katie remained silent, wanting to respond but she felt ashamed to even nod her head.
"Could you sit up for a moment please, hon?" Dr. Shale motioned Katie to rise and lean forward, setting the bell upon her back.
Chills ran down Katie's spine as she took steady breaths, in and out. The bell moved to two lower areas on her back until Dr. Shale moved away, "Everything sounds great," said Dr. Shale as she jotted down on the form clipped to her clipboard. "Now how about your wounds? No aches? Itchiness?"
Katie twisted her shoulder slightly for the pain to still be present. "Just where that thing bit me," she replied, "But it's whenever I move it, though. Everything else feels fine."
Dr. Shale's eyes furrowed, "Well, that's...good to know," she said as she gestured her hand up, "Move that arm up for me?" Katie, slightly confused by Dr. Shale's change in demeanor, lifts the arm with the bite, a sharp, subtle pain causing her to hiss, and yet, she was able to lift her arm halfway.
"Huh," said Dr. Shale, her brows knitting together. "And for a minute there, we thought you wouldn't be able to move that arm at all."
Shale moved one of the visitor chairs over to sit, "Whatever bit you nearly tore your tendon off, according to the medical staff that treated you. Although, the rest of your injuries weren't as severe than we expected, either, so that should be a relief, also.”
Katie froze, puzzled that detail. It couldn’t have been possible when her wounds felt deeper when her fingers could practically dig into them before, the large bite especially. He recollected the beast's teeth digging into his flesh, nearly tearing her entire shoulder apart.
"Are you alright?" asked Dr. Shale, tilting her head slightly, her face painted with worry.
Snapping back to reality, Katie stared at her doctor for a moment, "Y-y-yes," he stuttered, "I was just...mentally preparing for the next few days."
"Ah," Dr. Shale said, relieved, "Did you want to talk about it, maybe?"
Katie hummed lightly as he shrugged. "It's not important considering no one has survived these attacks." Katie sighed deeply, "What am I even saying, I hardly talk to anyone about myself. I wouldn't even share this to my parents just so they didn't have to worry."
"Surely, you do plan to tell them eventually, right?" she asked, her heart throbbing anxiously, "However, I'm not going to pressure you as you are perfectly capable of taking care of yourself."
"I know," Katie replied, "But I don't know what to say. They might tell me to come back home for my own safety. I don't want to leave my dreams behind—-not my partner or my friends, either." Katie ruffled through her mangled, maroon hair, "Ugh, I cannot believe this is happening."
"I wouldn't worry so much," Dr. Shale reassured, "The "corniest" thing for me to tell my patients...but the more you push who you love away, the more it's going to hurt you. Say a needle pricked your body each time you were hurting and you didn't talk about it to anyone—-just more and more pain and stress on yourself, love, especially for someone attacked by a wild animal on a night like this."
Katie's eyes drifted away from her doctor as she took in some of her advice, feeling a sense of shame but not wanting to confront it.
Dr. Shale moved an inch closer with her chair, "Though, I do ask, and forgive me: why did you go down that hill? Because according to what your girlfriend and friends have told us, you had went down the hill yourself to comfort the deer, I believe?"
Katie bit down on her bottom lip, recoiling at the question, "I don't know why I did it."
"And you knew it was a dangerous thing to do," Dr. Shale added, "However, I could tell you might've felt disquiet about the situation and needed a way to retreat."
Katie sighed, "I guess... to give myself some solance? Or just an unnecessary distraction."
Dr. Shale nodded softly, "And it's a surprise you survived."
"And that's going to be another problem," Katie added, "Because everyone's going to look at me like I'm night of the living dead or some other " being" because so far, we've lost three students, and two more were just average citizens around the neighborhood."
"That's absolutely horrid," said Dr. Shale, in utter disbelief, "I am so sorry you all have to endure this. And surely, no one, when you arrive back, would ask why you're not dead or decide if you should live or die, right?"
Katie glanced away, pondering yet what others thought, "You never know unless you look at them. All anyone does is...stare." Katie reflected back to her grading school days, which weren't as pleasant when it came to creating friendships and her public status. "Though...they hardly do that as much here."
Dr. Shale hummed softly with a smile, "Then it shouldn't be as terrible returning back to school—-not that you have to go straight back to doing any work."
"Right," said Katie, fiddling with her hands as she kept the rest of her thoughts to herself.
"Now, all you need is rest and a few days to do so." Dr. Shale smiled warmly. Katie replied with an exhausted yet relieved smile.
"And don't worry about being alone finding the right people," Dr. Shale added, "I never found mine back then, and yet, I can only find a few presently."
Katie nodded softly, "I'm used to that," she said, rubbing her neck, "Although, I only say that because it started to get to me when I got older but I knew I only had myself. And I also realized...I was just the "weirdo"——the person who is more into filming rather than making proper friends. I'm just childish."
"Everyone is different," said Dr. Shale, resting her hands upon Katie's chilled hand. "Everyone is allowed to be their own. Nobody else even thinks you act like a child, either—-you're just you."
Katie glanced away with doubt. She looked back and smiled, despite the thought of her doctor's assurance to sound a tad fatuous, "Thanks."
"Anytime," Dr. Shale replied as she stood and released her hand. "Now you rest up, alright?" Katie gave a soft nod, as she lied back and gaze upon the dim blue lit ceiling. She inhaled sharply before she exhaled, to then rest her eyes.
Katie never felt open to a doctor in her entire life, actually. Dr. Shale did seem to relate a little, which put her at eased.
At the entrance, the gang were just leaving and entering the nightly cold when Jade caught a glance at Dermon, leaning against the wall, a puffy purple jacket warming him. He took in the fresh, earthly air as he put a lit cigarette between his lips, a momentary cloud to join the air as the bitter taste of tobacco lingered in his mouth.
"Hey," Jade greeted from the entrance, the lingering scent of tobacco to seep strongly into her nose.
"What's up," Dermon responded, low and hoarse, "You doin' okay now?"
Jade nodded softly, embarrassment washing over her face, "Yeah. I didn't mean to act like...that. I was overreacting."
"Don't think about it like that," he said, "It was a valid response."
Jade thought otherwise, thinking more about it as impending rather than rationally. Jade placed both hands over her mouth as her warm breath coated them briefly, running her hands together as if the warmth could linger longer.
"D'ya come to smoke, too?" He asked, passing her his open cigarette pack, "I guess you could cure my loneliness."
Jade chuckled, "Nah," she denied, waving a hand, "I actually wanted to ask something." Jade leaned against the cold, hard wall beside Dermon. Jade licked her lips, "About if you've struggled with...dark moments in your life."
A puff of smoke lazily slipped out of Dermon's lips, the tobacco scent becoming stronger. "Why are you so worried about it?"
"Well...," Jade took a breath, "You seemed to be calm about everything that goes on in this hospital, and earlier you calmed me down and assured me my girlfriend was going to be alright. You seem more experienced with this and..." Jade rolled her lips inward, feeling a sense of tension without even looking Dermon's direction, "Look, I know it sounds weird to even ask but...I just want to feel better about my situation."
Smoke billowed from Dermon's mouth, "I guess you're right," said Dermon as he huffed in smoke and blew it out immediately, "So I had an older sister. We both went to the same college and we always watched our backs. Our parents were pretty strict, so we did the best to make 'em proud. And even though I was the youngest, I always watched over my older sis."
Jade glanced softly up at Dermon, deeply invested but also concerned for his past, "She was having a bit of trouble tryin' to focus so she started..." Dermon chewed on his lip before clearing his throat, " "Taking." I told her to stop and she told me, to my face, that she would. She even flushed 'em right in front of me. But then one day, I come into see her, and she's chokin' on her vomit."
Jade’s heart sank, "Good god," she said in her mind as she placed her hand over her chest.
Dermon stared off into the distance, shaking his head softly with the cigarette still smoldering between his fingers. He let out a shuttered breath. "And I was blamed for it—-by my father."
Jade's worried gaze turned to Dermon, her eyebrows furrowed. "W-why?"
"He told me that I was supposed to make sure she didn't fuck up," Dermon continued, his face twisting into frustration, "I" was blamed for her actions just because I didn't make sure she wasn’t doing somethin’ stupid. He thought violence was the best discipline, too, pushing us into a better self for "his" envisioned future. And my mom just watched—-she let him do this. And of course, he saw my sister differently—-even treated her the same way he treated my mom."
Jade glanced down, still in shock, "Do you still speak to any of them?" Jade said with a heavy heart.
"Hell no," he said sternly, "And same goes for my sister, too. After she was kicked out of school for the incident, we stopped talkin'. She has tried to reach out, but I knew it was just for her own issues.” Dermon put the cigarette between his lips, huffing out a layer of smoke.
Jade nodded softly, "I don't blame you," she said. "You did what you could to stay by your sister's side, and yet you're still given contempt back."
"Yup. And so, I just focused on what I've always wanted to do—-go into medical. Besides me at the receptionist desk, I'm still helpin' patients around and performing medical procedures here and there—-I'm still in the stage of becoming higher than just a receptionist, though."
Jade nodded, a soft smile forming on her lips. "And there's no one to tell you what your future should look like."
"Uh-huh," Dermon put the cigarette between his lips again, inhaling before blowing out a large puff of air.
The two stood in silence, taking in the fresh air mixed with the stench of tobacco. As Dermon blew out his last smokey breath, he flicked the cigarette down to crush it underneath his foot.
"That one girl you went to see," Dermon added, cocking a brow. "You both seem to be close."
Jade felt her cheeks flush. She didn’t understand why she always felt a sense of humiliation as if she danced a wicked move, but her and Katie have been together for two years and nothings every changed nor made her feel any terrible way.
“Yeah.” She replied finally, crossing her arms, "She completes me...and I complete her."
"I hear that—-I haven't been that close to someone in a while. I'm glad you both have each other. How long have y'all been together, actually?" Dermon leaded against the wall with his arms crossed.
Jade's heart warmed, "Two years—-three by Christmas."
"Holy shit," Dermon smiled, "That's dope—y'all's anniversary is on one of the most memorable holidays."
Jade felt her cheeks warm as she smiled from ear to ear, "Y-yeah, she was the one who asked me out—she had beat me to it."
Dermon laughed, "And ya know, she chose right."
Jade nodded, her heart warming. "Yeah...she did."
A disquiet beat came between them, leaving Jade to take the opportunity to leave.
"Well, uh," she spoke, "I better get going. Thanks for...telling me a bit about yourself."
Dermon waved, "No problem," he replied, "And get well rested—-Your girl is gon' be alright."
Jade chuckled, "I know she will." Jade turned and headed for Dirk’s car, with the three already ready to go.
Dermon headed back inside as Jade got into the passenger seat, glancing back at the hospital with a heavy knot in her stomach. Her mind raced with probable relief yet pessimistic outcomes of how Katie would recover, acknowledging the trauma Katie's already been through.
***
Katie barely slept that night. She had shut her eyes briefly for only exactly twenty minutes before waking up in a panic. However, when it started to hit early morning, slumber eventually took over and her mind settled for a good while.
Visiting hours began nine in the morning and ended at eleven in the evening, and Jade, she wanted to be there early before it hit exactly, which meant she was already ready to go before the others, with little to no sleep as the worry for her beloved kept her up practically all night.
Jade’s non-fragrant face cleanse beckoned her to wash away the leftover sadness and prepare for the day. It felt quite unnatural without Katie. She had already missed the left over scent of Red Bull under her breath whenever she woke up beside her, even her fingers wringing softly in some of the natural curls in his hair.
Before leaving, the group collected Katie's assignments to set aside. Whenever Jade would pass by, everyone gave a strange yet worrisome glance, but she disregarded them and continued on.
Lastly, Jade, alone, stopped by her and Katie's professor with the last name, "Opal."
Her hair was always in a messy, dirty blonde bun with different hair clips, an untidy and colorful fit, usually consisting of overalls, eyes that resembled pale blue gemstones, and always wore white sneakers.
Despite some wrinkles appearing here and there, her mid thirty year old youth still lingered. She was the only professor she had grown closer with, and the only one who didn't necessarily make the class want to go back to sleep.
The moment Jade entered, Opal stood from her rolling chair, shocked but filled with a little relief.
"Ms. Johnson!" she cried. "My god, are you alright? I heard about last night!" Jade came down the steps, gloom still resting on her face with a weak smile.
"Yes, I'm fine," Jade replied, "Still in a bit of shock but....look, I-I just came to collect anything Katie had to do."
Opal narrowed her brows, "Well I highly believe she wouldn't need to do anything after she gets out of the hospital, right?"
"Well, yeah, but sometimes, she usually does her work early and I just want everything organized."
Opal's concern shifted to sorrow, "That's wonderful you're doing this, honey," she said, resting a hand over her chest. "But you, your friends, and Ms. Mitchell deserve a break—-a great, long one, which is why I'm going to allow you and Katie to not have to do these assignments until you're all back in good health. Mentality comes first, you know that."
It felt illegal to take a break, especially in college. The other part of Jade that relied on the silent space of the world without interruptions, thought it was for the best, "Thanks, professor." Jade smiled softly. "But I can't guarantee Katie'll be resting since she's a workaholic," Jade chuckled, "But I'll make sure she doesn't overwhelm herself."
"I'm positive on that, Ms. Johnson," she replied, a soft smile creasing on her face before suddenly fading, "Do you happen to know when Katie'll be discharged?"
"Likely until the next day, hopefully—-he's recovering pretty well, from what I've heard from his doctor."
Opal nodded, relieved, "That's good to know. If you both want to spend some quality time with me on my lunch again, you're more than welcome to, anytime."
"Thanks," said Jade, "Though, I think me and Katie are just going to keep in our dorms just to recover—nothing personal, professor."
"No, no, I understand completely," Opal said while she waved her hands, "Take all the time you both need, I just wanted to put that out there in case you both wanted to." Opal smiled.
"Thank you," Jade smiled subtly as she walked back up the stairs, leaving the room quietly.
As Jade headed back to her dormitory, a familiar voice caught up with her, "Jade, hey!" It was Minnie, out of breath and glad to have finally seen her alive, "I didn't know you came back! How's Katie, is she okay?"
"She's fine." Jade replied, gloom still left in her tone, "She has to stay in the hospital until tomorrow, I think."
Minnie soon caught their breath, hands over their hips, "Well, that's good to know." they replied, letting out a relieved sigh, "I take it you're about to go and rest, maybe?"
Hearing the word "rest" had put Jade at ease a moment, before reminding herself she couldn't do it without Katie beside her, safe and sound without any harm coming to her again.
Jade glanced over at her dormitory as she chewed off the inside of her cheek, "Not yet," she replied, letting out a heavy sigh, "I'm actually about to...go check on her."
The air suddenly grew uneasy, Minnie rubbing the sweat building up off their neck, "Oh, right...gotcha." Minnie chuckled softly, slipping their hands into their oversized pockets.
"I mean uh...if you wanted to come along, you're more than welcome to...," Jade cleared her throat, "But t-that's only if you're up for it."
Jade didn't want anything else to come out hee mouth, and instead let her feet move her out the conversation. And yet, her mind couldn't send the message properly but have her stand there like an idiot—-an idiot with an ex-lover standing just as awkward as she was.
After an awkward beat, Minnie's brain finally caught up with an answer, "I'm great, actually," Minnie replied, their hands to hurriedly slip into their armpits, "I actually wanted to ask if maybe you and the others would be down to uh...chill a bit sometime? Just to be with you all as you recover, you get me?"
Jade’s face formed a skeptical look she at first, didn’t want Minnie to see. Despite knowing her and Minnie haven't been around the topic for two years, they had given the untrustworthy impression when it came to subtle bonding, "Maybe." Jade nodded, her lips forming a faint smile, "But after Katie recovers."
Minnie felt they needed a better answer in when that recovery would be, but they inclined with a simple nod otherwise.
"Sweet," they replied, gently hitting their hands against their sides awkwardly, "And you know, I totally would come see Katie but I have my hands tied with uh...school." Minnie chuckled softly. "But uh...tell him I said "Hey?" They created a finger gun and winked, a tiny flush of embarrassment forming on their face.
The air had suddenly grown uneasy, "Yeah, sure," Jade smiled softly as she awkwardly hurried and walked off. Minnie doing the same and rethinking most of their life choices.
Minnie didn't know if that was even right. They just wanted to be nice. They just wanted to be a whole group again without the past to somehow pop in every now and then. And Katie was okay—-she was friendly, always, besides not interacting with her so much.
Instead of her own dorm, Jade went into Katie's to collect a couple of her belongings and leave some of her classwork—-her favorite mystery horror book, "Clue" and comfortable spare clothes for the next day. She then headed out to the front, where Dirk, Mason, Hanna, and Hunter were waiting for her near Mason's silver Pt Cruiser.
"Jade," said Mason as he walked up to embrace himself around them. "I still wish I had come sooner last night—-I still can't fucking believe this happened," Mason released Jade, keeping his hands on her shoulders, "Did you guys come late from the restaurant?"
"Of course we didn't," Jade responded sternly, "And the cops didn't believe us and thought we were just fucking screw up college students who knew no better," Jade grumbled, "I don't really want to discuss this. Just....let's go see Katie."
Mason nodded, removing his hands from Jade's shoulders, "Okay." He stayed beside Jade as they headed for the car.
Mason hopped in the driver's seat while Hanna sat in the passenger's. Hunter and Dirk remained in the back while Jade was in between them, keeping her composure and remaining silent the entire ride to the hospital.
They passed the same site where it all happened, it now a crime scene with only a few officers investigating. It made Jade feel nauseous, their body wanting to curl up and never return back to that night. They wanted to cry again, sob uncontrollably at the fact the only person to have truly loved them was close to death.
Eventually, they've reached the hospital to check in, with only two going at a time.
Jade went in along with Mason, Katie's eyes instantly gleaming at his presence. Mason came and embraced her gently. "Surprised you survived a night in the hospital, you big goof," Mason laughed.
Katie chuckled weakly, "Can't take me out that easily...I hope you guys are doing okay."
"We'll be fine, my love," Katie felt the comforting warmth of Jade's hand clutching hers. The two gave each other assuring smiles when Jade then asked, "Did you wanna...take a walk around?"
Katie glanced down at his feet still hidden underneath the covers, struck to believe most of the pins and needles in his feet had overcome, up until he wiggled his toes. "I think that would be great," he said as he pulled the covers off himself, "I've been in this bed for too l-long—-here, I'll have to call a nurse."
After the immediate ping of a nurse, Katie started to sit himself up to get the blood flowing back through his legs, his feet reaching the floor.
A black haired and fairly-tan nurse eventually came through, "Hey, hun," she said, entering the room, "I'm gonna assume you're going for a walk?" Katie nodded softly, the nurse stepping next to the heart monitor to disable it before providing Katie assistance.
He grabbed the IV on his left, and as he finally stood, he staggered a moment, with Mason and Jade ready to step in. Katie gestured a hand for them to keep away as his balance improved.
And for what felt like an eternity, everyone was together at last, and thankfully in one piece. They had walked around the muted hospital, talking amongst one another while also quietly horsing around.
Jade stayed close to Katie, the two holding hands while wandering together, silent and peacefully.
"Are you glad you'll be out tomorrow?" Jade inquired with a gentle smile.
"Definitely," Katie chuckled softly, "I'd rather sleep in my own bed——and clothes."
A giggled escaped from Jade. "Luckily, I brought in some spare clothes for when you're discharged." They smiled warmly at Katie.
"Thanks, love," Katie smiled weakly yet appreciatively. Shorty, for it to slowly faded.
Jade caught the sudden shift. "Are you okay?" they asked, rubbing their hand against Katie’s back.
Katie only shrugged, "How's everyone back at school going to think about another "victim" who survived?" Katie sighed, "I still can't get over it. That thing shook me like a rag doll and nearly took my head off."
Jade's mouth curved into a frown, discovering Katie's hand noticeably trembling. Jade leaned against Katie's shoulder as she wrapped her arm around his, Katie's anxiety washing over.
"Stop worrying so much." said Jade, pressing her lips against her temple. "You're alive—-that's all that matters." Jade clutched onto him tightly. Katie leaned close, clinging her arm around Jade’s as they both continued to stroll down the dimly lit hall, Katie leaning his head against Jade's.
The day went by faster than the others could think about when lunch started, enjoying their time with Katie for only two and a half hours before returning back to campus.
The day started to wind down, the sun vanishing midway with its warm, orange sun rays bleeding into Katie's hospital room.
Katie returned to her favorite mystery novel before powering on her cellphone, which was, surprisingly, unblemished from the incident. Endless notifications had finally come in after changing, waiting to be acknowledged, including text messages from Linda, Rick, and Aaron.
She read through the notifications, realizing how highly alarmed they were by Katie's lack of replies.
The skin from his inner cheek peeled a little as Katie bit down on it delicately as he continued to scroll, to then freeze. Despite it shut down, his cell had caught four missed call from Aaron an hour ago. The moment he clicked his name, it began to ring, only by the third ring was when he immediately gave up.
Katie lied back, her phone now lying on her chest. She sighed deeply as she shut her eyes. And as the world began to wane around her, her body grew heavy and felt cushioned around what felt like a weightless cloud, unbothered if it were to bury her alive.
What would her parents say about this. They'd likely have a cow the moment they'd see the distress in his eyes.
Katie had already thought about just a few excuses, but Linda and Rick wouldn't fall for even a well- scripted one.
Sure, her school was deemed dangerous, but only after night fall. She wouldn't be sent back home; she couldn't. All her dreams would be a waste if she left now. She now a victim of the beast of California college of film. She likely was deemed a legend by her peers, by now.
She didn't want to be famous for anything—-not anymore, at least, and not in this way. She wanted to be heard from others positive perspectives besides the local weirdo who ate nothing but cheese balls and ruin the appetite of having a three course dinner. The apocalypse-saving popularity was fun but had gotten old fast.
Besides the apocalypse, the current situation felt like a horror flick, but she wasn't any final girl nor did it seem as if the attack was intended to happen for a new, future plot. However, she felt some connection to it psychologically, but she couldn't tell what it's supposed to mean.
As her slumber grew deeper, the further and swiftly the hours passed. Katie had remained in bed, keeping to herself as morning went onto the afternoon, reaching the time of her discharge.
Katie slipped on the clean, spare clothes Jade brought—-baggy grey sweatpants, a black pullover, and another pair of winter boots that were a darker tone brown.
Jade and the gang eventually came to pick her up, helping her gather her things and making sure she was comfortable, including Dr. Shale who walked along with her to the exit.
"Quite sad to see you go, Mitchell," said Dr. Shale, hands in her coat pockets. "Though you didn't stay long, I enjoyed being your company." Shale smiled.
Katie smiled subtly, "Thanks," she said softly, "I guess I enjoyed the peace—-away from school. But in actuality, I thrive on making as many film projects as I can because it makes me feel better about my self worth."
Katie and Dr. Shale giggled, soon reaching the exit and entering into the crisp, cool autumn air. Its breeze brushed against Katie's skin like a thousand kisses, healing her instantly.
Dr. Shale and Jade spoke for a moment while everyone else packed into Mason's car, with Dirk offering to sit in the trunk. Katie sat in the passenger seat while Mason sat behind the drivers seat, quietly waiting for Jade to come. Katie stared out the window with a hand resting on the right side of her face.
"She prefers to be alone most of the time," Jade explained, "But I'll continue to keep her mitigated." Jade softly sighed as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"Good, good." said Dr. Shale, glancing up at the light sky and taking in the fresh air. "Well then...I'll guess I'll leave you all to your business. And I wish Katie the best and a strong recovery. Either you or your friends can call us if she's feeling anyway ill at all or if there's any emergency with her wounds. Her medication should be ready by now," Shale glanced at her watch, "Oh, silly me, about thirty minutes or so."
"Gotcha," said Jade, "T-thanks...for taking care of her." Jade giving a single nod as she smiled subtly, walking off as Dr. Shale waved a final farewell.
Jade went and entered the driver's side of the car, the others in the back keeping to themselves along with Katie, who glanced and smiled at Jade, who smiled back. As Jade lied her hand on the stick shift, Katie placed her's over. It wasn't as warm, but Jade managed to send warmth through her body briefly as Katie eliminated her stress by bringing her hand to her lips, pressing them against the back of Jade's hand before softly letting go.
Jade smiled passionately at Katie, nearly about to breakdown. It was almost like they were looking at her soul that had just come to visit her, but the kiss on her hand let her know it was all real. Katie was alive. She wasn't going anywhere.
Katie turned back to her window, watching the hospital grow father away as Jade drove off.
The car remained quieter than a mouse all the way back to campus. Katie hadn't moved her gaze away from what remained on the other side of her window. Only a couple of times did a hand not resist the urge to briefly itch the bite wound still wrapped in white medical strips.
Eventually, the gang made it back. Jade pulled in front of the school entrance, "Your medication should be ready by now, so I'll go and pick it up," said Jade, "We can actually stay behind for a bit, if you want."
Katie pondered a moment as she took her seatbelt off. "I'm okay," she said, "I'm just," Katie cleared her throat, "Going to shower and...lie down." Katie smiled softly.
Jade gave a subtle smile before pressing her lips against Katie's, "Okay my love," Jade said as Katie got out of the car, a backpack with her stuff and new bandages inside, "And I'll pick up some food on the way back."
Katie smiled as she nodded, watching Jade driving off with the others still in the car.
Katie made her way to the entrance, hesitating before pulling the door handle. The door opened to several students surrounding the halls. One student's worrisome gaze immediately locked on Katie with others around doing the same, glaring as if she were a random, uninvited ghoul.
Katie's heart sank, her blood running cold as her stomach started to get bilious. She averted worrisome stares as she walked down the hall, closing out hushed whispers that likely discussed her return.
Katie's pace quickened as she approached her dorm, her heartbeat suddenly growing louder in her ears. She hurried inside, practically slamming the door behind her then pressing her back against it. As her eyes followed her familiars surroundings, relief began to wash over her as she slid down to ball up.
Katie kept her vision in darkness for a moment as she took a large, deep breath, preparing herself for the shower that beckoned her.
Eventually, she gathered her matching orange bathing towel and washcloth, setting it on a hook close to the shower. She grabbed a small, waterproof heater to set aside, which brought in more heat with the average temperature to satisfy Katie's sensory needs.
The bathroom appeared like a beautifully, glowing corpse in a an old casket as the tiles were a pale beige with a burgundy shower curtain, a glass mirror over the white sink bowl, and a toilet close to it. Despite the pale tiles, the walls remained yellow—-it the brightest part of the room.
As the shower's steam poured throughout the room, Katie took a moment to study herself in the mirror, taking off her shirt to reveal her hundred and forty pound torso, her beige wireless bra and bandages wrapped around her wounds.
Her treated injuries surrounded her stomach, reaching up to her face. Katie brushed her fingers against the bandages up to the left side of her face, to begin peeling off one bandage off her cheek, revealing a horizontal scar that has healed almost entirely.
Puzzled and curious, she removed two large bandages off her stomach then a few off her arms, and the bite on her shoulder to have similar symptoms.
The wounds seemed eager to heal, rushing the process rather than taking the time it needed. Merely a day and a half had passed since she sustained them. How was this possible?
She allowed the warm shower water to run down her back and in her hair as she remained within her own thoughts. Her gaze fixed on the leftover water trailing down the drain, forming a whirlpool into what looked like a dark abyss.
Eventually, she washed up, lathering her delicate body and rinsing out her hair. Her shampoo would always remind her of Jade as it contained a cherry-almond scent that Katie would smell everyday up until she'd remember to rewash her hair.
Her body wash made her smell like a bed full of freshly grown lavender, which was a very common soap scent everyone had in their bathroom or kitchen at least dozens of times.
After using another towel to dampen her wet, maroon hair, she groomed, moisturized, and combed it back in her natural, short pony tail. She applied the extra fresh bandages given to her by the hospital to her healing wounds, which almost seemed unnecessary but felt comforting, if that made sense.
Katie finally slipped back into her original clothes, which were still fresh from after leaving the hospital. She soon left the bathroom, silent and fresh. A few more steps up to the edge of her bed filled her with bitter relief. She allowed her body to slam lazily onto the soft but firm twin mattress, her vision now focused on the blank, yellow ceiling.
Katie lied motionless, her mind practically wandering away from reality as the noise around him began to fade away. So much has happened so quickly—he didn't know what to say nor do besides sit up and think.
His fingers slowly and firmly gripped at the sides of the bed, his body softly rocking back and forth. He knew this was coming and yet hadn't practiced his breathing exercises. It didn't help with the sudden rush of emotions that had flooded him, his rocking to eventually lead him into standing back up.
He paced erratically around the room, fiddling with his hands. His breathing was hard, growing heavier as he continued to walk around. The strength he had couldn't hold back the tears that flowed down his flushed cheeks, but only came when his hands started to firmly apply intense pressure as if he were trying to rupture his head open.
His pacing had eventually ceased with hushed sobs escaping from him, his chest rising and falling hard. In between them, a short yell would rip from his throat, with his hands, from time to time, clinging against the sides of his temple.
He eventually wandered over to a wall to lean then sit against, weeping while also hitting against his legs also from time to time. His emotions continued to best him, continuously striking and gripping his head and legs.
Ultimately, he had curled into a ball, silent and still as she resisted the urge to rub his red-rimmed eyes with tears dried up on his cheeks. Whenever he'd blink, he'd squeeze out some leftover.
His cellphone buzzed with a shoe-gaze metal riff from one of his favorite bands. His body didn't want to move a moment, but if it were her doctor or girlfriend, she'd would rather hear their worrisome voices speak. But when he got up to look, wiping the leftover tears from his face, his heart wanted to leap and run away as the bold white contact name showed "Aaron."
Katie's chest tightened, refusing to believe her little brother had discovered her call attempt from earlier and returned it. What would he say about her new scars? He didn't need to see her like this.
Katie didn't want him to know, but there was also no other choice besides jumping out the window and never looking back.
His finger hesitated over the accept button, eventually swiping up before the phone could attempt its last vibration.
Katie put his phone over his ear, to hear Aaron's relieved and cheerful adolescent voice on the other end, "Katie!" said Aaron, "I've been trying to reach you, I nearly gave up! How've you been?"
Katie chuckled weakly, sitting on her bed, "Good, Aaron, I-I've been good. And yeah, sorry, I've been pretty busy with uh...," Katie chuckled nervously while rubbing her neck, "A lot." A lump in her throat nearly made her choke out the truth.
"I'm so glad to hear from you sis," Aaron continued, "I also wanted to show you something me and Abbey have been working on!"
Despite her anxiety, her heart had filled with joy as the troublesome weight began to fall off her shoulders. "I can already guess what it is." Katie smiled subtly.
"Of course," Aaron replied, giggling, "Here, take me off regular call mode so I can show you."
Katie's heart sank as she swallowed, hesitantly moving her phone away from her ear to switch the conversation to video call. The moment it activated, on Aaron's end, it displayed the feet and legs belonging to a dinosaur, but carefully built out of grey legos.
Katie recognized what it was immediately and said aloud, "An Allosaurus!"
"How'd you know?" said Aaron, moving his face into frame.
Katie chucked as she shrugged, "Despite both Allosaurus's and Tyrannosaurus's having similar features, I just thought of something that wasn't a Tyrannosaurus...if you get me." Katie let out a nervous chuckle.
Aaron laughed, "Don't worry, I understood what you meant, Kate." Aaron soon got a good look at his older sibling's bandaged face, his smile fading. "Hey, Katie," he said, pointing to his own face, "W-what happened to your face?"
Katie's heart felt like it had fallen out of her body, now realizing her face was exposed the entire time. "O-o-h, it's n-no-nothing," she stuttered, "I just uh...fell down a big hill." Katie chuckled nervously as her brother's concern grew.
"It doesn't look like a hill injury," Aaron added, "Are you sure you're alright?"
"Yes, Aaron, I'm fine—-could never be better." Katie gave a weak smile.
"Then why do you look like you've been crying...," Aaron tilted his head to the side, "Or haven't been sleeping...or unless you were crying while sleeping."
Katie's anxiety went sky high, to then immediately catch an idea to escape what seemed like a surprise interrogation. "Oh wait A-Aaron!" said Katie, pretending to be losing the call's connection, "Y-Your breaking u-u-up! S-s-somet-thing c-came up, I've gotta g-go, bye!" And before Aaron could say another word, Katie ended the conversation, tossing her phone aside.
Katie cubbed her face into her hands out of shame, the anxious weight returning with a hint of guilt. Katie's hand moved to her injured shoulder, "He doesn't have to worry," she said in her mind, "None of them need to. It's not like I'm dying."
Suddenly, Katie's phone rang again, her heart nearly leaping out of her chest. She didn't need to look at the contact name unless she wanted her heart to explode.
Katie covered her ears in attempt to eliminate the phone's obnoxious ringing with the guilt she had over her shoulders. Eventually, after the second call, she hurried and shut down her phone. It didn't matter anymore if Jade or someone else would try and reach her, she found it better not to hear anything at all for the day.
Katie lied back, hand resting back on her injured shoulder as her mind traced back to the night before.
She couldn’t help but think.
The pain she recollected was the most excruciating, and it all happened so suddenly. Why did she want comfort? The innocent deer still perished and Katie could’ve joined it.
"Goddamn idiot," she whispered to herself. As Katie continued to lie motionless, within her own noisy mind and the ache of her violent memories were overcome by her friends and partner there by her side. Despite the help she'd get from her mom, dad, and brother, including from Deborah and Eric, she felt a bit of peace, for now at least.
Katie let out a heavy sigh, allowing her vision to creep into darkness, but to return immediately to the light as three gentle taps emitted from the door. She paused and glared at it a moment, her feet moving themselves to the floor and towards the door, which opened to Jade and the others with burgers and fries from their favorite fast food joint.
Katie's shoulders felt as if a giant vulture had fallen off them, her eyes instantly lighting up, "Thank god you guys came back sooner," Katie said, giving a small, gentle smile.
"Hey, my love," Jade quickly pressed her lips against Katie's as they entered, with two brown bags in their hand and the scent of well-cooked, greasy fries traveling through Katie's nostrils.
Mason, Hunter, Hanna, and Dirk also slid through and entered, Jade sitting on the bed with the others fighting over who'd claim the two empty chairs.
Katie joined Jade, taking a brown bag handed to her with the fast food's scent reaching a stronger point once she opened the bag. She got a helping of French fries and a burger with two patties, cheese, crunchy pickle, and no lettuce nor tomato as Jade knew Katie would rather insist not eating a different texture.
Katie would even check if there were mustard before eating, which thankfully, wasn’t present.
However, the sweet, tangy, and heated flavors from spicy honey mustard were almost a delicacy to her and Jade, which is why Jade had brought their own bottle.
"You're always a life-saver," Katie smiled as she grabbed the yellow bottle Jade handed her.
After putting a decent amount underneath her bun, her first bite felt as though she were on a cloud. The burger's taste all itself made her feel as if she were at a cook-out, minus the loud chattering and bugs.
Jade felt the same eating hers, even more satisfied sitting with her loved one.
"Did you lay down after we left?" Jade asked, taking another bite of her burger.
Katie hesitated with his burger half way in her mouth. "Well, uh, yeah, but after I took a shower," Katie chewed a bit whilst covering her mouth, "I felt like I hadn't rested well in ages."
Jade giggled, "The best thing ever. And you'll be just as composed now that you're going to take a break from school and be able to hang out with us a little more. We'll still have school stuff to do but we're more focused on you than ever."
"Oh guys," said Katie, touched, "You don't have to do this."
Dirk spoke with their mouth a bit full, "D'ya forget we're your best friends?" Dirk swallowed, "You were just in a horrible situation, which means we're gonna make sure you're well rested and recovered—-you've been through enough as it is, too."
Katie smiled, yet with doubt about her recovery lingering. "Right...but I feel as though I don't deserve it."
Hunter stood, "Now what makes you say that?" He inquired.
"I was my own fault I had went down there to check on that dying deer. Besides the doctor saying it was more of a retreat from the current situation, I shouldn't have left for any reason. I was careless."
Hunter rose a brow, approaching closer, "But you're saying this as if it's your fault for the deer getting hurt, when it wasn't. And clearly, it wasn't Hanna's either as she hadn't seen the deer until it presented itself right in her beaming headlights. If you think you were meant to "go" that day, you're crazy."
Katie stared down at her hands, trembling slightly up until Jade pulled them close to themselves, "Hunter's right, babe," they said, "Fate can do whatever the hell it wants now but you're here. If that deer did give you a sense of security or a reminder that everything was going to be okay, then alright. Just know I'll also be by you no matter how hard it gets."
Katie's frown worked its way into a small smile, glancing around at everyone despite the eye contact unbearable.
It didn't take long for everyone to finish up besides Jade, who briefly placed their burger down to come and give Katie a gentle embrace, Katie immediately wrapping herself around. Hunter, Dirk, Hanna, and Mason joined in, their assuring warmth becoming ten times stronger.
Afterwards, Jade, with half a burger in her mouth, brushed a napkin against her fingers and palms, standing off the bed then taking the burger back out to finish. "I'll be right back," Jade assured, "I'm just going to get my pajamas and some other things."
Katie nodded, with Jade leaving and Hanna, Hunter, and Mason following behind.
Katie sat still on the bed, continuing to finish her meal. Dirk, still finishing their food, inched over to come close beside her. "Hey," they said, "I bet you're now feeling a little better after some good food, too, huh."
Katie gave a soft smirked, "Yeah," she replied, "And better with you guys...genuinely, thanks for being here."
"Always, dude." Dirk gave a small, short, and platonic kiss on Katie's temple, wrapping their arm around her shoulder to lean her close.
"You'll be okay," Dirk assured, a smile giving Katie a sense of relief. "I promise."
Katie leaned her head against theirs, reminding herself of the great bond Dirk always kept with her.
Hearing the words "okay" and "recover" did make Katie secure, yet also turning a knot in her stomach, with the thought that something in the upcoming days will go horribly wrong—-some kind of consequence awaiting her.
The thoughts about her family also created an uneasy feeling within her, considering she actually cut off calling anyone for the remainder of the day.
***
Eventually, the day ran into nightfall, with half the school asleep in their dorms, including the gang all in the comforts of Katie's dormitory.
Hanna, Hunter, Dirk, and Mason had brought their own blankets, and pillows, not minding lying on the floor, meanwhile Katie and Jade snuggled up in Katie's bed.
Katie lied with his arm around Jade, no blanket to warm the two up as both their body temperature did the work.
They both were wearing boxers that reminded them of each other, with Katie's decorated with cherries while Jade's had lightning bolts. While Katie was hugged by a thin, pale green long sleeve, Jade had his oversized care-bear t-shirt that was toned crème, with a silk brown bonnet worn around their braided hair.
Not everyone in the building could hear the semi faint snoring coming from Katie with only her friends and Jade to listen to. It all seemed soothing and tranquil, except Jade had been twisting and turning, with the room now without walls, a floor, nor her friends and beloved, but only a chilled breeze with the dead leaves dancing in it and the sky a midnight blue hue.
It was then she realized the eerily quiet room and Katie's snoring had been replaced by the wind whistling a tune. When she sat up, she felt her legs to be entirely numb, unable to move them. It wasn't sleep paralysis, surprisingly, and yet it felt as if she were about to encounter something horrific as she found herself in the middle of nowhere, with only trees dancing with the breeze and the gentle start of heaven's tears.
Droplets lightly fell, somehow completely avoiding her. It was then when the sound of a twig snapped to her left. She jolted her head the same direction immediately to only discover nothing to be the cause. For it to then travel to the right, his head shifting to discover also nothing but the dark forest and the rain continuing to pour.
Before she could relax with relief, a soft grow comes from behind him. A chill travels down her spine as she avoids any eye contact with what or who was lurking behind her.
Jade slowly covered her ears as she firmly shut her eyes. She concentrated hard on the sanctuary of Katie's dormitory while tuning out the soft growing and the wind which progressively got stronger. She soon opened her eyes luckily back to the dorm, with Katie resting peacefully beside to him.
As her body started to ease, suddenly something warm grab her ankle. He looked to see a hairy, dark hand clutched around it—-more a claw than anything. A familiar, soft growl emitted from the unknown creature, with another arm resting onto the bed before a hairy head started to poke out slowly, its ears the first to be seen. Before Jade could get a good look, she was back to Katie's dorm again, awaking with a start.
Katie was still next to her, his arm locked around her. Jade let out a big sigh before moving Katie's arm aside to step out of bed.
The inside of her mouth felt like a dry, deserted island, quenching for cool water.
Jade grabbed a water bottle from Katie's miniature fridge, nearly drinking the entire bottle in one sitting as she took large sips at a time. She closed it before taking a breather, feeling her mouth heal from its quenching. She glanced over at the window to discover the rain truly coming down, with the trees and leaves dancing within the soft breeze. She wrapped her arms around herself, inching closer to gaze at the forest from across.
Warmth rested on her shoulder as arms wrapped around her. She glanced to see Katie’s chin resting on it. "Couldn't sleep?" She asked, her voice low and rough with exhaustion.
“Did I wake you?” Jade asked, lying her hands against Katie’s arms.
"No."Katie replied, trailing her nose against Jade’s neck before kissing it. "Just got worried. You were turning in your sleep."
"I wouldn't stare that way all night," suggested Katie, "Come back to bed."
Jade hummed lightly, rubbing her face before taking a deep breath. “I can’t really sleep, though. But wait, babe.” Jade turned to face Katie, his tired eyes parting open.
“Aaron and your parents were texting me to ask if you were alright. And Aaron says you called him earlier but hung up suddenly?”
Jade watched as Katie’s eyes sprung wide, his chest suddenly rising then dropping.
His eyes glanced away. “I didn’t want them to worry for me.” Katie swallowed.
“Let them.” Jade said. Her tone didn’t seem mean, but more as if she were disappointed. She cupped Katie’s face. “You keep pushing people away when clearly you’re hurting, and you know that’s not good for you, your family, or us. Stop this lying, please.”
Katie’s eyes looked as if they were about to weld with tears, her eyes glassy under the moonlight shining through the window. "I'm sorry." Her voice cracked.
“Don’t be sorry.” Jade pulled her into an embrace, Katie’s arms still flopped to her sides, shame striking her in the chest. “I just need you to be okay. And I want you to talk to your parents and your brother tomorrow, okay?”
Beads of tears fell from Katie’s eyes as she buried her face into their shoulder. “Can you be with me while I talk to them? I feel like I’ll break down when I’m alone.”
Jade nodded. “Of course, my love.” Jade moved her hands back to Katie’s face. Her hands held the sides of her temple as her lips met Katie’s, parting then connecting deeply again, feeling like a warming promise.
Jade smiled against Katie’s lips, her forehead resting on Katie’s, warm, gentle, and hard.
Katie rested her hands against Jade’s exposed waist, smooth and lukewarm. "I'm suddenly not as tired now," said Katie, her eyes still heavy lidded but more aware.
Jade raised her brows, surprised as the same thought was stolen from her mind. "Surprisingly, me too."
Katie snorted softly. "Wanna watch a movie until we're sleepy?"
Jade beamed. "You're such a mind reader, babe," they said tenderly. "I'd love that."
Katie pulled out his thick laptop overflowed with stickers, setting it up on his legs beneath the covers as Jade latched her warm body against hers. Her silk purple bonnet brushed against Katie’s chin, her arm resting on his collar bone.
The others remained in a deep sleep while Jade and Katie watched their favorite animated film of the cuddly dragon warrior everyone loved. Besides the first being the best, they’d much prefer the sequel over the rest of the films in the trilogy.
Katie still wondered a little on where the beast now was. Did it finally leave the school? Maybe, maybe not. It may even come boldly to the school to finish the job while killing everyone else in its wake.
A whole massacre.
The shift of Jade’s body knocked Katie out of her spaced state. She smiled down at them, pressing her lips against her forehead, her arm now resting around Jade, keeping them close.
And for a moment, everything seemed normal.
It was going to be okay.
