Lynx
The first time Lynx heard those words, something inside him shifted, deepened, healed. All his life—at least as far back as he could remember—a question had gnawed at him, unanswered. Is someone like me… worthy of being loved?
Tiger had answered that question in the simplest, most effortless way, with a smile that made Lynx’s heartache.
A question that had haunted Lynx, a question he’d tried to answer a thousand times in his own head, yet had always failed… and all this time, Tiger had been safekeeping the answer just for him.
“Of course. Even I love you,” Tiger had said, his voice soft yet sure. Then, with the gentleness of someone handling something precious, he’d cupped Lynx’s face and kissed him.
That moment had felt like the closing of a love letter, the ink still fresh, the words bound in the tender silence between them. Tiger’s lips were the wax seal, delicate yet unbreakable, pressing warmth and promise into Lynx’s skin. It was the sort of kiss that made everything feel safe—sealing a truth that Lynx had needed to hear.
If Tiger’s kisses were words, they would tell me that I am worth loving.
Lynx hadn’t said it back. There was no need. The look in Tiger’s eyes hadn’t asked for anything in return. It was a moment suspended in time, not one that required responses but one that offered reassurance.
Yet after that day, Lynx found himself, slowly and steadily, going through the motions of confessing his feelings.
Step 1 : First, there’s the moment when you think you think it.
“T-Tiger, I think Snowflake is sick.”
Lynx rushed into the kitchen, one of their white cats cradled gently in his arms. His face twisted in concern as he glanced at Tiger, who was in the middle of making breakfast. It had become part of their daily routine—Lynx checking on the cats in the morning while Tiger prepared food.
“No, let me see.” Tiger immediately got off the counter, his voice calm as he moved closer to Lynx and the sickly cat in his arms.
Then, Tiger did that thing. That thing Lynx had come to adore—the way Tiger listened to the cats, as though he understood them. In the past, when Lynx had caught him talking to the cats, the taller man would quickly glance away, sheepishly. But now, he spoke to them freely, without hesitation, and Lynx never questioned it. He simply smiled, his heart growing fonder with each soft murmur and gentle word Tiger shared with the animals, as though it was the most natural thing in the world. Tiger spoke to the animals the same way he spoke to people, with a gentleness and understanding that seemed to draw them in.
"You put him in the carrier; I'll take out the bike." Tiger’s voice was soothing, calm. "It’s probably something he ate last night, we’ll get him checked out at the vet."
Lynx watched Tiger walk off, a bright smile lighting his face as all his worries vanished.
I think I…
Step 2 : Then there’s the moment when you think you know it.
“Oh, you don’t want to kiss me. You’ll get sick,” Lynx mumbled, his throat sore, wrapped up in blankets in his bed. It had been one of those days—a seasonal cold hitting him hard.
Tiger chuckled softly, sitting at the edge of the bed with an empty bowl of chicken soup in his hands. "I promised I’d kiss you if you finished this."
Lynx opened his mouth to protest but was cut off by the gentle press of Tiger’s lips against his. The kiss, though brief, was warm and tender, making him feel more comforted than the soup ever could.
Two days later, it was Tiger lying in bed, sick with the cold he’d caught from Lynx. He smiled softly into his bowl of soup. “Totally worth it.”
I might love this man.
Step 3 : Then there’s the moment when you know you know it, but you can’t quite say it yet.
Lynx opened his eyes, his gaze meeting Tiger’s warm, brown eyes. Tiger’s smile was soft, his cheek pressed on the table where Lynx had fallen asleep. He reached out, running his fingers through Lynx’s hair.
Lynx groggily blinked up at him. “What… why are we here?”
“You fell asleep. I didn’t want to wake you,” Tiger whispered, his voice like a lullaby. He’d placed a blanket around Lynx’s shoulders.
“You could have gone to bed,” Lynx murmured, still half asleep.
“I was waiting for you,” Tiger replied softly. “I don’t mind watching over you.”
Lynx didn’t speak; the words were too simple, too obvious now. Instead, he just smiled—soft, sleepy, content.
I love him.
Step 4 : And then, there’s the moment where you know you know it, and you can’t keep it in any longer.
“My brother’s coming to stay next week. I got him to give me a chance, but… what if it doesn’t work out?” Lynx’s voice was laced with worry, panic creeping into his words.
“Lynx, breathe.” Tiger’s voice was calm, grounding as always. It was magic. Lynx took a deep breath.
“He gets in on Thursday…” Lynx trailed off, his words weak with worry.
“That’s great,” Tiger said with a reassuring smile. “We’ve got this. I’ll set up a room for him, and we’ll close up shop for the weekend. We can take him out to the countryside, show him around. It’ll be perfect for bonding.”
“Really? You’d do that?” Lynx blinked.
“Of course.” Tiger smiled wider. “Why wouldn’t I?”
Lynx couldn’t help but smile back, warmth flooding his chest. “Tiger?”
“Yeah?”
Lynx gazed into his eyes, and the words spilled out, effortless, as if they had been waiting a lifetime to be said. “I love you.”
Tiger’s face lit up with a smile, beautiful and radiant, the kind that made Lynx feel as though he had been bathed in sunlight, wrapping him in a quiet warmth he never wanted to leave.
Tiger didn’t need to say anything back. His eyes, his smile, his kiss—those were the words Lynx needed. And when they kissed, he knew that Tiger’s kisses would always say exactly what Lynx’s heart needed to hear.
