Summary
Over the clanking of trunks being loaded on trolleys and the cacophonous babbling of children greeting parents, two brothers sat silently in a quickly-emptying train. The younger one was terrified, knew that the only thing waiting for himself and his brother was disaster. He held onto his brother’s sleeve with a white-knuckle grip, chewing on the inside of his lips until he tasted blood. The older had spent the ride pretending he was fine, that his life at school was as he liked it and that his life at home was something better than hell. The only thing that grounded him was the sound of his baby brother’s shallow breaths and the knowledge that he was still alive to take them. He intended to make sure his brother stayed breathing for however long he damn-well chose to, even if he had to buy that freedom with his own life.
“Do you remember the plan?” the older asked.
“Yes,” the younger nodded.
