Work Text:

The house was wrapped in the soft stillness of night, the only sound the faint rustling of leaves outside as the wind whispered through the trees. The soft glow of the hallway nightlight spilled faintly into the master bedroom, where a warm, golden light from the bedside lamp bathed the room in a cozy radiance.

Nace reclined against a pile of pillows, his reading glasses perched low on his nose as he flipped through the pages of a worn, leather-bound book. His brow furrowed slightly in concentration, his large, calloused fingers gently tracing the margins of the pages—a habit he’d never quite shaken. His presence radiated steadiness and quiet comfort.

Curled against his side was Jan, his head resting on Nace’s chest, his dark lashes brushing his cheeks as his eyes drifted closed. His fingers absently toyed with the fabric of Nace’s soft cotton shirt, twisting and smoothing it in a slow, soothing rhythm. The steady thrum of Nace’s heartbeat beneath his ear and the familiar warmth of his scent lulled Jan toward sleep, safe in the haven of his husband’s arms.

Nace’s eyes softened as he glanced down at him, a faint, tender smile tugging at his lips. He shifted just enough to press a gentle kiss to the crown of Jan’s head, breathing him in, savoring the simple peace of the moment. He let his fingers trail slowly through Jan’s thick, dark hair in a rhythm that spoke of quiet intimacy and deep love.

The peaceful stillness stretched on until—soft, hesitant footsteps echoed faintly down the hall. Nace’s head lifted slightly, his brow furrowing in concern. The steps were light and uncertain, pausing just outside the half-open bedroom door. The old wooden floor creaked quietly as someone shifted their weight.

“Mia?” Nace called softly, his deep voice careful not to startle whoever was there.

No answer.

Jan stirred at the sound, blinking sleepily as he pushed himself up just enough to look toward the door. His voice was still thick with sleep as he mumbled, “What’s wrong?”

Before Nace could respond, a small figure slowly appeared in the doorway, bathed in the faint, comforting glow of the hallway nightlight. Mia stood there, her small frame trembling slightly as she clutched her beloved stuffed bunny to her chest. Her dark curls were tangled from sleep, and her wide, tear-brimmed eyes stared at the floor, her little face drawn with worry.

“Misčka?” Jan whispered tenderly, already reaching out a hand. “Come here, ljubica.”

Mia shifted but didn’t move closer. She hugged her bunny tighter, her small fingers twisting its well-worn ear. Her lip trembled, and she blinked rapidly, fighting back tears.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” Nace coaxed gently, his voice soft and steady as ever.

Still, Mia hesitated, her small hands fidgeting nervously. She took a tiny, uncertain step forward, her gaze flicking up toward them for the briefest moment before dropping again.

“I…” she whispered, then stopped, her voice barely audible.

Jan slid off the bed, landing on his knees in front of her. He kept his expression gentle and open, his arms resting lightly on his thighs, ready to reach out if she needed him.

“It’s okay, Misčka,” he soothed softly. “You can tell us anything.”

Mia bit her lip hard, her small shoulders trembling as she fought back a sob.

“I… I had an accident…” she finally whispered, her voice cracking with shame. “I… I peed my bed…”

Her tear-filled eyes squeezed shut, and she dropped her chin to her chest, overcome with embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to…”

“Oh, sweetheart…” Nace was beside them in an instant, kneeling next to Jan and cupping Mia’s tiny shoulders with his warm, steady hands. “It’s okay, ljubica. It happens.”

“We’re not mad,” Jan added softly, gently brushing a tear from her flushed cheek. “You’re not in trouble.”

“But… my bed… it’s all wet…” she choked out, her voice thick with humiliation.

“We’ll fix it,” Nace promised without hesitation. “Let’s get you cleaned up first, okay?”

Mia sniffled but nodded slowly, allowing Jan to gently lift her into his arms. She buried her face in his neck, her tiny fingers clutching his shirt as if holding on for dear life.

While Nace headed to her room to strip the wet sheets, Jan carefully set her down on the bathroom stool. He knelt in front of her, gently wiping her tear-streaked cheeks with his thumbs.

“Accidents happen,” he reminded her softly. “When I was little, I had accidents too.”

Mia blinked up at him, her wide eyes still shimmering with tears. “You did?”

“Mhm.” Jan smiled warmly.

He gently filled the tub with warm, bubbly water and helped her out of her damp pajamas, guiding her carefully into the bath. As he washed her hair with lavender-scented shampoo, he asked, “What pajamas do you want to wear tonight, Misčka?”

Mia hesitated, fidgeting with the edge of the towel Jan held ready. “Um… can I… wear my bunny ones…?” she asked shyly.

Jan’s smile widened as he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “Of course you can.”

Once she was clean and wrapped in her favorite bunny-print pajamas, they returned to her room, where Nace was just finishing making her bed with fresh sheets. He had even arranged her stuffed animals just the way she liked them.

“All done—fresh and cozy,” Nace announced softly, standing back to admire his work.

Jan scooped Mia up and gently tucked her into bed, pulling the warm quilt snugly around her small frame. He brushed a stray curl from her face and pressed a soft kiss to her temple.

But as he started to stand, Mia’s tiny hand shot out, clutching his fingers with desperate urgency.

“Misčka?” Jan whispered softly, sitting back down on the edge of Mia’s bed as her small fingers clung tightly to his. Her wide, tear-brimmed eyes stared up at him, shimmering with fresh worry.

“Can… can you stay?” she pleaded in a tiny voice, her grip tightening as though afraid he might vanish if she let go.

Nace was already kneeling on the other side of her bed, his large, warm hand resting gently over hers. “Of course, ljubica,” he murmured. “We’re not going anywhere.”

Jan stretched out beside her, careful not to disturb the neatly tucked blankets, while Nace settled on her other side, wrapping his long arm protectively around both of them.

Mia nestled between her parents, still clutching Jan’s shirt and Nace’s hand as her breathing steadied. The soft glow from her nightlight bathed the room in a gentle warmth, but her small face still carried a hint of worry.

“Misčka,” Jan whispered, brushing a stray curl from her cheek. “Do you know something?”

She blinked up at him, her voice trembling. “What?”

“When I was little… I had accidents too.”

Mia’s eyes widened. “You did?”

He nodded slowly, giving her a soft, reassuring smile. “I remember one time… I must have been around your age. I was staying over at my friend Luka’s house. We played all day—running outside, climbing trees, even playing pirates until it got dark.”

“Pirates?” she whispered, momentarily distracted.

“Mm-hmm,” he hummed. “We made a fort out of blankets, like a real pirate ship. I was the captain, of course.” He winked, making her giggle a little.

“But that night…” His voice softened, more serious now. “I was so tired from all the fun... I didn’t wake up when I needed to use the bathroom.”

Mia’s eyes rounded, filled with concern. “Did… did you…”

“I wet the bed,” Jan admitted gently. “Right there in my friend’s house. I was so embarrassed... I thought he’d laugh at me or tell everyone at school.”

Her small fingers squeezed his hand. “What… what happened?”

Jan smiled faintly, the memory vivid but softened by time. “Luka’s mama found out before anyone else did. She helped me clean up, gave me fresh pajamas, and said it could happen to anyone. She never told Luka or anyone else. And you know what? I went back to play at their house the very next week.”

Mia’s brow furrowed. “She didn’t get mad?”

“No, Misčka. She didn’t even make a big deal about it. She just helped… like mamas and papas do.”

Mia seemed thoughtful, her fingers tracing absent patterns on Jan’s sleeve. After a moment, she whispered, “Did it… ever happen again?”

Jan exchanged a gentle glance with Nace, who gave an encouraging nod. “Yes… it did.”

He exhaled slowly, his thumb rubbing soothing circles over her hand. “One time… I was at school. We had this really strict teacher who didn’t like us asking to leave during lessons. I was too scared to raise my hand.”

Mia gasped. “What happened?”

Jan smiled wryly. “I tried to hold it, but I couldn’t... and I… well…” He chuckled softly. “I ended up with wet pants in the middle of class.”

Her mouth fell open. “Did everyone laugh at you?”

“Some kids did at first,” he admitted, “but the teacher—who I thought would be really mean—was actually really nice that day. She helped me get new clothes from the nurse’s office and told the class it was nothing to be embarrassed about.”

He tapped her nose gently. “It felt like the end of the world at the time… but you know what?”

“What?”

“I barely remember it now. Nobody ever brought it up again... and it didn’t change anything about me.”

Mia hesitated, biting her lip. “But... what if it happens again?”

Jan cupped her tiny cheek, his voice tender. “Then we’ll help you, just like my teacher helped me. Just like Luka’s mama did. No one’s going to be mad, Misčka. We all have accidents sometimes… even grown-ups.”

Mia’s gaze flicked to Nace. “Did Papa ever…?”

Nace chuckled warmly, brushing her other cheek. “Oh, I’ve had plenty of accidents too. You’re not alone, ljubica.”

Her lips trembled, but a small, relieved smile tugged at the corners. “Really?”

“Mm-hmm,” Nace gently ran his fingers through Mia’s soft curls, his deep voice soothing as he spoke. “I remember one time, when I was maybe seven or eight, we went on a long car trip to visit my grandma. She lived way out in the countryside.”

“Like... really far?” Mia asked, her small fingers tracing circles on Jan’s sleeve.

“Very far,” Nace nodded. “The drive took hours. I told my mama I didn’t need to go to the bathroom before we left because I was too busy packing my toys.”

Jan smirked knowingly. “Classic.”

Nace laughed. “About halfway there, I realized I needed to go really badly. But we were on this tiny road with no place to stop.”

Mia gasped. “What did you do?”

“Well... I tried to hold it as long as I could.” He smiled sheepishly. “But then… there was a big bump in the road…”

Her eyes widened. “And—”

“I couldn’t hold it anymore,” Nace admitted, his tone light and warm. “I… well… I wet my pants, right there in the car.”

Mia’s small hands flew to her mouth. “Oh no!”

“My mama pulled over as soon as she could. She helped me change into clean clothes from the suitcase, and my papa wiped down the seat.” He chuckled softly. “They didn’t even get mad—they just told me to always try to go before we leave next time.”

Mia’s expression softened. “They weren’t upset?”

“Not at all,” Nace reassured her. “Accidents happen. They even let me have some cookies afterward because I felt so embarrassed.”

Mia giggled at the idea of getting cookies after something so scary.

“But that’s not the only time,” Nace added with a playful smirk. “One time at school, during P.E. class, we were playing soccer, and I really didn’t want to leave the game.”

Jan laughed. “Oh no... I can see where this is going.”

“I kept thinking, ‘Just one more minute, one more kick…’ But before I knew it…” He shrugged dramatically. “I was standing there in the middle of the field, my pants completely soaked.”

Mia’s jaw dropped. “In front of everyone?”

“Everyone,” Nace admitted with a smile. “The coach noticed and quietly told me to go inside and change. He even told the rest of the class I was helping with something important so no one would laugh.”

“Did they?”

“A couple of kids snickered,” Nace said honestly, “but the coach told them that teasing wasn’t allowed, and that was the end of it. By the next day, everyone forgot all about it.”

Mia played with the edge of her blanket, her little face thoughtful. “It… wasn’t such a big deal after all?”

“Nope.” Nace leaned down to kiss her forehead. “It felt big at the time, but accidents aren’t the end of the world. People who love you will always understand.”

Mia snuggled deeper between her parents, her eyes half-lidded with sleep. “I’m glad... you told me.”

Jan smiled, his voice soft. “Anytime, Misčka.”

“We’re always here,” Nace whispered, pressing another gentle kiss to her curls.

Safe in their warmth, Mia let out a tiny yawn, her body finally relaxing as sleep claimed her, the weight of her worries washed away by the comfort of her parents’ stories and endless love.

Mia wrapped her small arms around both of their necks, squeezing tight as she whispered, “I love you.”

“We love you too,” they answered softly, holding her close.

And for the first time that night, Mia’s worries melted away, replaced by the safe warmth of her parents’ love.
