Work Text:

“I’m not a kid anymore mom. I can take care of myself besides I don’t want to tag along that’s weird plus David gives me the creeps, he smells bad AND —“

“Sam that’s very rude don't say that.”

“Well it’s true….” He muttered.

”Put Michael on the phone please, honey.”

”This is not fair, he’s going to ruin the whole thing.”

Sam judges Michael’s outfit up and down. “Why are you dressed like The Terminator.” Michael just ignores him. He doesn’t have time to argue or change again, he’s already running a little late.

”I know it’s last minute, I’m sorry but you know how I feel about leaving Sam home alone I picked up an extra shift so I won’t be home until later.”

”You can’t baby him forever… this is last time.”

”I knew I could count on you! Thanks, I gotta go. Bring David over sometime for dinner, okay? I’d love to sit down and talk with him more properly.”

”If Sammy doesn’t drive him away tonight, then sure.”

“Be on your best behavior!” Lucy reminds Sam before hanging up.

“We’re leaving now. David probably already thinks that I stood him up.”

“Geez cool it, would ya?  I don’t know who’s more desperate. You or him. This is embarrassing”

“Yeah, well how do you think I feel? Having to show up with you.”

”Nanook’s coming too, he get’s separation anxiety.”

“I’m pretty think sure it’s the other way around.”

The two banter the whole way to the boardwalk.

”Stay close by, got it? Don’t wander off.” Michael warns.

”Yeah, yeah.” Sam shoo’s him away.

Michael tries to find David but he isn’t at the spot that they were suppose to meet. Shit did he already leave?

“You sure like to keep a guy waiting.” David chucks his cigarette bud to the ground and puts his hands into his coat, greeting Michael with a smile to show he’s not upset only kidding around. Then whispers something into Michael’s ear that causes him to blush and goes in for a little kiss.

Michael tries to play it off, as if he isn’t anticipated about it now. “Sorry. I got caught with babysitting duty.”  He gestures over to Sam who could be overheard arguing with a booth attendant about how these games are rigged. “He nearly burned the house down last time when we left him unattended so.”

David just found all this to be amusing. “No worries.” He chuckles

”So have you actually ever won any of these games before or .”

“Plenty.” David boasts.

“Bullshit.” Michael scoffs. “I’m calling your bluff.”

“You want to bet on it?” David’s all smug. “Careful, you don’t know what your getting into.”

“Oh, I don’t plan on losing.” Michael states confidently.

“Good, I always love a challenge but don’t say I didn’t warn you.” He teases. “I never lose.”

“We’ll see about that.”

David must’ve been to the boardwalk a thousands times, knows all the ins and outs and seen everything it has to offer and yet he never seems to be sick of it somehow. Michael wasn’t sure how but he wanted to make this date memorable, he’s hoping to leave an impression.

They set out on who can win the most prizes by the end of the night but quickly found themselves losing track and enjoyed being in each other’s company more than anything. They almost forget they were even competing and that Sam was there. Almost.

“You up for a ride?” David points to a crazy looking rollercoaster.

Michael is already getting nauseous just thinking about it and trying his best not to show it. “No thanks. I like being on the ground.”

“Hmm… that’s too bad.”

“Mike’s scared of heights.” Sam chimed in.

”Is that so?” David questions raising an eyebrow at this information.

“I am NOT.”

“Watch Nanook, I’m going on.”

“Not alone, you aren’t.”

“No way, you’re actually gonna go?”

Michael is silent.

”That’s what I thought…”

“I don’t mind going with him.” David reassures.

“I do…” Sam detests.

”Do you want to go on the rollercoaster or not?” Michael glares.

”I guess … whatever let’s go blondie.”

Nanook starts to snarl at David.

“Hey, cut it out!” Michael snaps but of course he only listens to Sam.

“Dogs have never really been to fond of me.” David admits.

“I wonder why..”

Michael nudges Sam to cut it out.

“How about a little peace offering?” David hands over a stuffed animal he won earlier. Nanook sniffs it, inspecting carefully before accepting. “It’s all yours.”

Michael didn't know what was worse waiting out here and having no idea what they’re talking about or if it would’ve been any better if just faced his fear and went with them instead.

David hoped to get on Sam’s good side eventually since he’s serious about this relationship with Michael but knows that these things take time. So he tries to make an effort as they were waiting in line for the ride.

“Do you really got to smoke every 5 minutes. How are you even still alive?”

”Is there any particular reason you don’t like me?”

”I can name a few but I’ll keep them to myself for now or else I might end up on a missing poster because of Michael.”

That earns a laugh from David. “You’ve seen those huh?”

”They’re all over town. My grandpa said it’s vampires that did it.”

”You believe that?”

”Hell no. I think he smoked too much, he's off his rocker.”

David laughs again.

“Why what’s so funny, have you seen something?”

”I’ve seen a lot of things.”

“Yeah okay bud, I ain’t falling for it.”

Now that they’ve broken the ice a little..

“Michael tells me you had trouble with some kids at your old school. Tell you what if anyone gives you any trouble here, just let know I’ll deal with them.”

”Dammit Mi—. That’s none of your business.”

“He’s just worried and trying to look out for you that’s all in fact isn’t that exactly what you’re doing for him too? The reason why you don’t like me very much is because your trying to protect him.”

“…I just don’t want to see him get hurt again. Last time he got his heartbroken he was a mess for months but you didn’t hear it from me, don’t tell him I said that.

”Cross my heart. And don’t worry I’d never hurt him.”

“I’ll believe it when I see it, if you’re still around in a few years then maybe I was wrong about you. Also what do you mean exactly by “deal with them?”

“I don’t plan on going anywhere so might as well get used to me kid. I meant exactly what I said they won’t bother you again.” He ruffles up Sam’s hair.

“…..”

Michael was surprised to see them getting along after the ride whatever happened I guess things worked out in his favor.

When counting prizes at the end it was pretty much a tie so, unfortunately that means no winner. Maybe next time. They make their way home.

“The date didn’t really go as I planned, I was hoping to make it more special.” Michael confessed.

“I had a good time but it doesn’t have to be over yet if you don’t want it to. Like I said earlier… ” David reminds trailing kisses along his neck.

“Let’s get out of here.”
