Work Text:

It was a pretty fall day in smiling valley, and Catnap was sitting on his large, comfy sofa.
It was about 2:30 pm and he had just finished a book, so he decided now was the time for a nice afternoon nap.

He lies down, breathing deeply as the gentle hands of sleep take him over.

When he wakes up in dreamland, he looks around, seeing nothing but a reddish black void.

He walks around for a while, trying to find anyone or anything, but so far, all he was finding was even more nothing.

Then, he spots someone, his heart lifting.

It was Dogday.

“Dogday!” He says. “There you are!”

Catnap walks over, smiling happily.

“Do you know where we are…?”
He asks.

Dogday turns around, a scowl on his face.

Catnap stops, his smile fading.

“Dogday…?” He says. “Are you okay?”

Dogday turns to face him completely.

“I’m breaking up with you.”

He says.

Catnap’s eyes go wide and his heart cracks.

“W-why…?”

Dogday growls.

“You’re a loser.”
He says angrily. “A creep.”

“You’re weak. Worthless.”

He laughs maliciously.
“I don’t even know why I asked you out. I must have been high on stupidity or something.”

Catnap cries as the pieces of his shattered heart fall to his feet, but try as he might, he couldn’t move or say anything.

“Don’t talk to me. Don’t look at me, and don’t even think about trying to get me back.”
Dogday says, pure hatred in his eyes.

“You are nothing but a STUPID STRAY.”

And with that, Dogday walks off into the darkness, leaving Catnap in a puddle of his own tears and the many pieces of his fragile broken heart.

Suddenly, a thousand memories flashed through his mind.

He remembers the first day he met Dogday, he remembers them being best friends.
The day Dogday confessed his feelings to them and they officially got together as a couple.
Going on dates together, and even a future vision of them getting married.

But then the reality set back in as he remembered that it’d never happen.

Never.

And then he wakes up.

Catnap sits up off the couch, covered in his own tears as he breathes heavily.

That dream.. It seemed real.
Almost too real…

He quickly gets his phone off the table and dial’s Dogday’s number, shakily holding it to his ear as the ringing theme plays.

“Hello?”
Dogday answers.

“D-Dog day!”
Catnap says. “It’s me!”

“Oh hi Catnap!”
Dogday says happily. “What’s up?”

Catnap smiles a little.
Just hearing Dogday’s sunny voice made him feel a little better.

“I.. I have an important question.”
He says.

“What is it?”

Catnap takes a deep breath before whispering,

“D-do you… still love me…?”

Catnap waits for his response, every nanosecond of anticipation torture.

“What kind of a question is that…?” Dogday says.

“Of COURSE I still love you!”

And with those words, a thousand weights were lifted off of Catnap’s heart.

He sighs in relief, flopping back onto the couch.

“T-Thank you…” He says. “I love you too…”

“Um, what made you ask?”
Dogday says.

Catnap shutters, remembering the bad dream he’d just had.

“U-uh, no reason, just… wanted to hear your voice.”

“Aww! That’s so cute!”
Dogday says. “You’re adorable, kitty.”

Catnap smiles and blushes. “So are you, my love.”

“Well, I’ll see you soon, yeah?”

Catnap nods. “Yeah…” He says. “Soon…”

“Alrighty!” Dogday says. “Love you! Bye!”

Catnap smiles, hearing it again.

“Love you too…”
He says before Dogday hangs up.

Catnap lies back down on the sofa, immensely relieved.

~The next day~

After his nightmare yesterday, Catnap wanted to spend some quality time with his boyfriend, and so asked him on a date to the park.
Dogday of course agreed, and so here they were.

They were both underneath their favorite tree, Dogday sitting down and watching some butterflies fly around, and Catnap resting his head in his lap.

Catnap felt happy to be right here with his love…
But he couldn’t help but remember yesterday’s nightmare.

The harshness in his voice, the scowls he’d given him, and remembering all the good times they had…

He sniffles, almost tearing up again.

“Catnap?”

His darling’s sunny voice says.

Catnap opens his eyes, looking up at his sweet sunshine.

“What’s wrong?”
Dogday asks, looking worried.

Catnap smiles shakily.
‘Nothing’s wrong, my love’
He signs. ‘The air is just a little dry, is all…’

Dogday looks at him with mild disbelief.
“Catnap…” He says, a serious tone in his voice. “I know something’s wrong, you look like you’re about to cry…”

Catnap sighs, sitting up.

He takes a deep breath before saying,
“I… I had a bad dream last night…”

Dogday gently takes his hand. “What was it about…?”

Catnap slowly starts to sign, explaining the dream he had to him, almost crying as he did so.

When he was finished, Dogday looked shocked and horrified.

“Oh…”
He says.

“So that’s why you called me and asked if I still loved you…”

Catnap nods, whimpering a bit.

Dogday gently takes Catnap into his arms.
“Shhh…” He says, holding his head close to his chest. “It’s okay…”

Catnap finally lets loose, weeping into Dogday’s chest.

Dogday keeps him held closely, rubbing his back and comforting him.
“It’s okay… I'm right here…” He says. “Everything will be just fine. I’ve got you.”

When Catnap calmed down enough to stop crying, he slowly pulled back.

Dogday smiles a little. “Feel better?”

Catnap nods. “Yeah… a little…”

Dogday smiles. “Good!” He says.
“Now Catnap…”

He gently takes his hands, looking deeply into his eyes.
“It was just a bad dream.” He says. “I would NEVER do that to you.”

He kisses his forehead. “I love you so so so much.”
He says with a reassuring smile. “I always have and I always will.”

Catnap smiles, his eyes sparkling.
“Thank you sunshine…”

Dogday leans in to hug him again. “You’re welcome, Moonbeam.”

As Dogday held him, Catnap could feel the cracks in his heart stitch themselves back together..

~That night~

After Catnap’s little breakdown, Dogday had offered to stay over with him, hoping it’d help with his nightmares.

And so here they were, both lying in Catnap’s bed, their arms around each other, while Catnap laid his head on Dogday’s chest, breathing softly.

“Hey kitty?”
Dogday whispers.

Catnap looks up at him. “Mhm?”

Dogday smiles softly.
“Don’t believe anything your nightmares tell you, okay?” He says.

He leans down to kiss his head.

“I’ll ALWAYS love you.”

Catnap smiles, starting to purr.

“I’ll always love you too, my sunlight.”
He whispers.

“You’re my light in the darkness.”
