Work Text:

It’s a chilly autumn Friday in the city of smiling heights, and it was just about time for a certain canine to wake up.

The clock struck 7:00 am as the alarm started to beep, awaking the teenage Dogday from his slumber.
He sits up, turning off his alarm and getting out of bed. He then gets a good stretch in before going to change his clothes.

After getting dressed in his favorite outfit, he goes downstairs to have a nice breakfast of cereal with cut up Bananas, before saying goodbye to his parents and siblings and going to wait for the bus.

On the bus ride to school, he puts his earbuds in and listens to his favorite song, “It’s raining sunshine” on the way there.
He ended up getting to school early, so he had time to chat with his buddies, Kickin and Bubba, for a bit, and go to the library to finish up his homework that he forgot to do last night.
He even had time to get his favorite drink and snack from some of the vending machines before he went to class (Sprite and peanut butter cookies).

As soon as he finished, the bell rang, signifying that it was time to go to the first period.
So Dogday puts his things away and heads to his first class, which was math. Nobody’s favorite.

He sits down at his desk and looks around, noticing more students were starting to trickle in, taking their seats.
In particular, he notices a handsome purple cat, blushing and smiling.

His fur was the most perfect shade of purple, not indigo, not magenta, just the right amount in between.
It looked so soft, and fluffy… he wanted to feel it so bad…

His eyes were a beautiful deep onyx and his pupils were a pure, shimmering white, like stars in the darkest sky… oh how Dogday wished to gaze deeply into them.

Yep, if this was a crush, then Dogday was steamrolled.

Math class goes as normal, with Dogday and other students answering questions the teacher asked, doing worksheets, and occasionally sneaking glances at Catnap, who, when he caught Dogday looking at him, smiled and waved a little. Dogday blushes, waving back.

After an hour or so, the bell rang, meaning it was time for next period.
Dogday was a little sad, because he knew him and Catnap had different classes for second and third, so he wouldn’t see him until lunch.

Oh well, it wasn’t that long.

~Magically time skipped to lunch~

As soon as third period ended, Dogday happily made his way to the cafeteria, where he got out his lunch box and looked around for a place to sit.
Most of the tables were full, except…

As luck has it, there’s an open seat right next to his feline crush.

He blushes and smiles as he makes his way over.

Catnap was sitting alone like usual, doodling in one of his school notebooks while eating his usual lunch of spicy tuna roll sushi and vanilla-flavor milk.

“Hey.”
Says a voice.

Catnap looked up to see none other than his acquaintance, Dogday, had approached the table.

He smiles, signing, ‘What’s up?’

The two knew each other by name, said hi every time they saw each other, and exchanged waves and knowing smiles from across the room every so often, but never really talked or hung out.

Until now, that is.

“Mind if I join you for lunch?”
The peppy canine asked with a soft smile.

Catnap shrugs.
‘Sure.’ He signs.

Dogday smiles wider, sitting down across from him.
He opens his lunchbox, which was a peanut butter sandwich and some pretzels, with grape juice to drink.

“So, how’ve you been lately?”
Dogday asks, eating a pretzel.

Catnap shrugs again. ‘Decent.’ he signs while eating a bite of his sushi with chopsticks.

“Cool.”
Dogday says, eating another pretzel. “Your classes going okay?”

Catnap smiles and nods. ‘Yup, all As or Bs so far.”

Dogday’s tail wags. “That’s good.” He says.
He then looks at Catnap’s lunch. “That looks interesting,” he says. “What kinda sushi is it?”

Catnap smirks. ‘Spicy tuna.’ he signs. ‘You ever had it?’

Dogday shakes his head. “I’m not much of a sushi guy,” He says.

Catnap gets another sushi bite with his chopsticks. ‘You wanna try?’

Dogday smiles. “Sure.” he says, opening his mouth as Catnap feeds it to him.

It was spicy, as the name implied, but very tasty.
Dogday’s eyes light up. “Mm, that’s not bad.” he says.

Catnap smiles. ‘Glad you like it.’ he says.

They continue to eat and chat for a little while, until Dogday gets an idea.

“Hey Catnap?”
He asks.

“Hm?”

Dogday smiles.
“Do you maybe… wanna hang out after school?”

Catnap nods.
‘Sure.’ He signs. ‘Where do you wanna hang out?’

Dogday shrugs. “Wherever you want,” he says. “We can hang out at one of our places, or at one of the shops in town, anywhere.” He says.

Catnap smiles.
‘Anywhere you say?’ he signs mischievously.

Dogday nods.

Catnap gently places a hand on Dog days, making him blush.
‘I think I know just the place.’ He signs with his free one.

‘Meet me in the courtyard after school, and I'll take you there.’

Dogday nods. “O-okay…”

Catnap, who had finished his lunch, packs his empty dishes in his lunchbox and puts it away.
‘See ya then, sunshine.’
He signs with a flirty smile before walking away.

Dogday blushes more, left utterly aghast from his crush basically asking him on a date, even though he was the one that asked...

~After school~

Dogday was sitting on the half wall in front of the school, waiting for Catnap just like he said he would.

He was nervous.
Where would Catnap take him? What would happen there?
Were they officially friends now?

Or… would they be more?

Dogday’s thoughts are interrupted by someone tapping his shoulder, making him jump and squeal.

He looks to who, and who else, it’s Catnap.

“Dude! Don’t sneak up on me like that!”
Dogday says, putting a hand on his chest. “You almost gave me a heart attack!”

Catnap giggles. ‘Sorry.’

Dogday sighs. “It’s okay…”
He says, getting up off the wall.

“So, where are we going?” He asks.

Catnap smiles, taking his hand and making him blush.
‘Follow me.’ He signs.

Dogday nods, holding Catnap’s hand as he leads him to the bus stop.
After getting the bus into town, they get off at the bus stop near the bike shop.
Then, Catnap leads Dogday into the small alleyway between the bike shop and the pizza shop.

‘Well, here we are.’
Catnap signs, sitting on the ground.

Dogday was confused. “Um… a random alleyway?” He says.

Catnap nods, smiling and gesturing to Dogday to sit beside him.

Dogday does, still confused.

Catnap smiles, closing his eyes and breathing deeply.

“Um…” Dogday asks, curiously. “What are you doing”

Catnap shrugs. “Just… existing.”
He whispers. “It’s kinda like a form of meditation I like to do to wind down after a tough day of school.”

Dogday tilts his head.
“Um… okay…?” he says, confused.

Catnap giggles.
‘Try it.’ he signs. ‘Close your eyes and have a few deep breaths.’

Dogday nods, closing his eyes and breathing.

“Okay.” Catnap whispers. “Now tell me… what do you hear?”

Dogday listens carefully for a few seconds.

“Well, I can hear the sounds of cars on the street.” He whispers. “And the sound of that air vent above us.”

Catnap smiles. “Good.” He whispers. “What do you smell?”

Dogday sniffs the air.
“I smell bicycle tires, the yummy smell of pizza, and…”
He winces. “Oh, that dumpster over there.”

Catnap giggles. “Haha, cool.”

He then scoots a bit closer.
“Now, just take some deep breaths.”

Dogday does as he’s told.
Breathe in… breathe out.
Breathe in… breathe out.

“Now…”
Catnap whispers. “Open your eyes.”

Dogday does, seeing Catnap had moved closer.

“How do you feel?”
Catnap whispers.

Dogday stares into space.
‘I… I feel relaxed.” He says.

Catnap hums softly. ‘That’s why I love this place…’ He signs.
‘It’s somewhere I can go to be alone, and just relax.’

Dogday smiles softly. “Well that’s wonderful.” He says.

Catnap gives him a sweet smile.
“Glad you like it.” He says, scooting closer.

Dogday blushes a bit.
“Y-yeah!” he says, glancing away.

Catnap giggles.
“What, are you shy all of a sudden?”

Dogday scoots away a bit.
“O-oh, no, it’s just…”

He smiles a little.
“You have a very pretty smile..”

Catnap blushes a little.
“Aw, thank you.”
He whispers with a smile.

Dogday smiles back. “You’re welcome.”

And for another hour or so, they just existed together, occasionally chatting about random topics like their favorite snacks or video games or whatever.
They even got each other’s phone numbers, remembering they hadn’t already.

“So where do your moms work?”
Dogday asks.

Catnap smiles. ‘One of my moms is a candy maker, and has her own candy shop in town, and the other is a beekeeper, so she sells the honey and beeswax she collects for stuff like skincare products and lip balm.’ He says.

Dogday smiles. “Cool.” he says. “I’d like to go to that shop sometime.”

Catnap scoots closer. ‘Maybe I'll take you.’
He says with a smirk, making Dogday giggle.

They talked for another hour or so before the sun had started to set.

When it was time to go home, Dogday sadly got up.

“Well, I should be getting home.” He says.

Catnap looked sad. ‘Do you have to…?’

Dogday nods. “Yeah, my dad will have my head if I'm not home before 10 pm.”
He says with a laugh.

He smiles softly.
“But… maybe we can hang out again tomorrow?” he says. “Tomorrow’s a Saturday after all.”

Catnap nods. ‘Yeah, that sounds nice.’
He signs with a smile.

“Great!”
Dogday says, his tail wagging as he starts to turn to leave.
“See you then!” he says as he waves goodbye.

Catnap waves goodbye as well.
“Goodbye, friend.”

~The next day~

The next day, Dogday was up bright and early, messaging Catnap.

Bestboi031: Heyyy buddy
Bestboi031: Good morning

There were like 5 minutes of waiting before he got a response.

LunarKitKat: Is it morning already

Bestboi031: Yup

LunarKitKat: Ugh no it’s Saturday
LunarKitKat: Can’t I sleep a little longer

Dogday sighs.

Bestboi031: Fineeee
Bestboi031: I’ll meet you at the alleyway at let’s say 12 okay

LunarKitKat: Sounds good
LunarKitKat: Now if you’ll excuse me I need more sleep

Dogday grumbles a bit.

Bestboi031: Okayyyy
Bestboi031: See you soon

Dogday then shuts off his phone, getting up and going to eat breakfast and get dressed.
He then quickly goes to the non-school bus stop, heading into town.

He wanted to get something special for Catnap.

~Later~

Dogday was standing in that same alleyway, alone, waiting for Catnap.

‘This place is a whole lot creepier when you’re here by yourself…’
He thinks.

After a few tense minutes, someone tap’s Dogday’s shoulder, causing him to jump.

But when he looked, it was just Catnap, who was giggling.

“DUDE! I told you, DON’T sneak up on me like that!”
Dogday says.

Catnap giggles more. “Sorry.”

Dogday sighs, then recomposes himself, smiling.

“I got you something.”
He says.

Catnap tilts his head. ‘Oh? What is it?’
He signs.

Dogday smiles and reaches into his school bag, pulling out a to-go container of Catnap’s favorite sushi.

“I remembered you like this stuff.”
He says, handing it to him.

Catnap’s eyes sparkle as he takes it.
‘Aww, thank you!’ He says. ‘But why?’

Dogday shrugs. “I figured you might be hungry.”

Catnap smiles softly. ‘You’re so thoughtful.’
He signs gently.

Dogday giggles. “Well, you know, I try.”

Catnap giggles as well, then sits down, patting beside him.

Dogday smiles and sits next to him, scooting a bit closer.

They two relaxed for a while, just breathing softly with their eyes closed.

With the atmosphere, mood, and them being alone together…

…Dogday knew that now was the moment.

“Catnap…?”
He says.

Catnap looks at him. ‘Hmm?’

Dogday gets nervous. “I… I need to tell you something.”

Catnap smiles softly.
“What is it?”

Dogday takes a deep breath.

“I… I really like you.”
He says.
“And I mean… LIKE-like you…”

Catnap blushes, smiling widely.
‘I know.’
He signs.

Dogday’s eyes go wide.
“Y-you know…?”

Catnap snickers.
‘I mean it was kinda obvious.’
He says. ‘Nobody else looks at me the way you do…’

Dogday blushes, looking down. “o-oh…”

Catnap then gently takes his face in Dogday’s hands, making him blush more.
“And if it wasn’t also obvious…”

He whispers before kissing him, softly.

Dogday squeaks in surprise before kissing back, wrapping his arms around Catnap’s waist.

The two teens savored their first kiss together before Catnap pulled back, looking deeply into dogday’s eyes.

“I like you too.”
He whispers, a sweet smile on his face.

Dogday’s eyes sparkle.
“Y-you do…?”

Catnap nods. “I do.”

Dogday smiles, his tail wagging.
“Well then, in that case…”

He takes Catnap’s hands, looking deeply into his eyes.

“Would… would you like to be my boyfriend?”

Catnap blushes, smiling and nodding.
“Absolutely.”
He says.

Dogday squeals in happiness, hugging him.
“Yay!” He says.

The two cuddle for a little while before deciding to share the sushi Dogday had brought, taking turns feeding each other with the chopsticks.

Once it was all gone and the container had been thrown away, Catnap was sitting against the wall, holding Dogday closely, who was nuzzled into his chest.

Dogday could hear Catnap purring softly as he leaned against his chest, savoring this moment happily.

Eventually, he pulled back, looking into Catnap’s eyes.

“I… don’t suppose you’d wanna come hang out at my place, would you?” Catnap says. “My moms and siblings are usually at work this time of day, so it’ll be just us…”
He says with a sly smile.

Dogday giggles. “Sure, babe.”

Catnap snickers as he starts to get up, helping Dogday up. ‘We haven’t even been dating for an hour and you’re already busting out the ‘babe’s?’ he signs. “At this rate you’ll be proposing to me by next week.’

Dogday laughs. “Well I can’t quite afford a ring yet, but maybe one day.” He says, kissing Catnap on the cheek.

Catnap blushes and offers a hand. ‘Well if you treat me right, maybe I'll say yes.’

Dogday takes it happily, his tail wagging. “Oh I will, sweetheart.” He says. “I’ll treat you like the prince you are.”

Catnap giggles. ‘Good.’ He signs as he starts to lead him out of the alleyway.

And so, off the two now boyfriends went, off to a day of hanging out, probably followed by a night of cuddles.

They both knew that the future of their love was bright.

Notes:

A more normal take on the ever popular high school au for the smiling critters

I used the high school concept in “Urban legend” but I thought I’d give these guys a more normal high school romance story where they are buds that mutually crush on each other rather than Catnap being an eldritch horror

I had planned to post this one before “Love you a latte” but I didn’t finish this one in time so you can think of this one as a prequel to that lol

However I do have a very special one planned for tomorrow so look forward to that
