The first thing Tom Wachowski felt as he woke up was pain, a lot of it.
The second was something poking him in the chin and as he opened his eyes with a pained groan he realised the cause, a series of blue quills poking him in the chest.
He saw Sonic laying over his chest protectively as a sort of spiky protection blanket, looking around he saw his ever gorgeous wife Maddie sitting fast asleep in the chair next to his bed, his youngest son Miles asleep on her lap, tails swishing slightly as he snored in his sleep, their eldest Knuckles was asleep in a chair on the other side of the bed, the way he was sitting with his arms crossed on his chest made Tom think he had tried to stand guard over him but had eventually crashed due to exhaustion.
As he tried to sit up Sonic groggily opened his eyes, the two stared at each other before Sonic's face lit up with both relief and joy.
"To-dad, you're awake! Mom, Tails, Knuckles wake up, he's awake!" Sonic exclaimed happy tears steaming down his face.
The others quickly woke up, Tails flying onto the bed landing next to Tom with a soft thump hugging him tightly and wrapping his tails around himself and Sonic.
"You're awake, daddy I was so scared." Tails sniffed burying his face in Tom's chest.
"shhh bud, I'm good I'm good." Tom reassured stroking him behind the right ear, something Tails loved.
Knuckles was far less hasty than his two younger siblings but he still hugged Tom.
"I'm glad you're alright father, I nearly thought you had gone to the great battleground in the sky." Knuckles said.
"Nope, not going there anytime soon pal." Tom chuckled.
Tom looked at Maddie who smiled warmly at him.
Tom happily returned the smile, he and his family were safe.
