Bright Light and Screaming Children

Summary:

Sun and Moon recently separated bodies. It’s Moon’s first time working with the lights on, and the children are awake and hyper.

Notes:

This morning, I saw a post on Tumblr that mentioned how much of a sensory nightmare the daycare is and I got a wee bit inspired.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Moon entered the daycare and squinted.

“It’s so bright,” Moon said.

“Is it? I’ve never noticed,” Sun remarked. Moon started organizing the barrels, and Sun made sure everything was clean. Eventually, it was time for the kids to come flooding in. Moon is used to handling this many kids. What he was not used to was handling this many awake kids. “Hello, friends!” Sun greeted them as the kids entered the daycare.

“Hi,” Moon said. Many kids were amazed by the two animatronics having their separate bodies. The kids ran around the daycare screaming and squealing happily. It was very grating on Moon’s ears. Moon stayed away from the chaos and went with the more quiet kids. At one point, a kid came up to him.

“Mr. Moon? Can we color,” the kid asked. It took Moon a moment to find his words.

“S-Sure,” he blurted out. He and the kid colored together, but eventually, a crowd formed, all wanting to color with Moon. All of the children’s shrill voices overlapped each other as they fought over Moon’s attention.

“Okay, Superstars!” Sun announced. “Let’s all color together!” Sun continued. Sun herded all of the kids into a big circle on the floor. Sun looked to Moon for help. Moon slowly got up and joined the circle. Moon relaxed a little as he colored with the kids. The kids settled down a bit and colored happily until naptime.

“Alright, Superstars,” Moon said, “it’s time for a nap!” Moon continued. At long last, Moon was in his element. Moon convinced those who didn’t want to sleep to settle down while Sun cleaned up the coloring supplies. Then the lights went out.

“It’s so dark,” Sun whispered to Moon.

“It’s perfect,” Moon replied.

“I don’t like it,” Sun said, shrinking in on himself.

“Stay close to me,” Moon said as he flew to the balcony. Sun followed Moon, and the two sat together on the balcony. “Now we just watch the kids and make sure no one disturbs the peace,” Moon told Sun. Sun nodded in response. The rest of the day might be overwhelming for Moon, but for now, he was comfortable and felt relaxed.

Notes:

I’m so glad that my sensory issues make it hardener for me to feel things and get overstimulated.
