Work Text:
“It’s been a while since we went out like this huh?” you mentioned to your date.
The crowded Sunday train station hummed with life, a pulsating heart at the center of the city’s frantic rhythm. A sea of people flowed through each car, spilling across the vast, echoing floors. The air is thick with the mingling scents of coffee from nearby vending machines and a sharp bite of cologne. Uramichi hated the stuff as it would give him a reaction.
“Yeah, since you usually sleep in until it’s noon and there’s not much time in the day left,” Uramichi replied bluntly.
“That’s not true! It’s because you’re always…never mind,” you said, not wanting to start a banter first thing on this peaceful morning.
Above, the overhead signs flickered with the endless parade of train schedules, their neon and colorful glow casting a cold, sterile light over the hurrying crowds. Commuters rush by, heads bent low over their phones or buried in thick novels, many too absorbed in their thoughts to notice anything around them. A mother grips her child’s hands tightly, weaving through the crowds, eyes scanning the platform for their train. A businessman, stylish in his tailored coat, adjusts his watch impatiently, glancing toward the schedule board as if willing the minutes to stretch.
You normally had other plans on weekends such as this but working in the same industry had made it easier for you two to plan an outing for once. Uramichi finally gave into agreeing to skip gym day.
It was true you had come home from work often exhausted enough to sleep early and yet, somehow, throughout the next day. It wasn’t like you were expected to do much, but they had often made you bring home projects on the weekends, and you had to sit at your desk during days off just to catch up. And by ‘they’ it was mostly Amon.
“Whatever, I just want to enjoy what I can of this day before tomorrow,” Uramichi shuddered, having remembered that it was Monday. And to make matters worse, a new announcement from the one and only production team. He could only imagine wearing the outfit he was shown beforehand.
It was a funny Friday.
Just like any other slow workdays, you happened to pass by each other while Uramichi went on break. His tired expression lit up when he saw you, but immediately knew something was wrong when you jolted from his stare. Your mouth shut tightly as he approached you.
“Rare for us to meet like this,” Uramichi said.
“Yeah, haha,” you chuckled nervously, averting your eyes from him.
Instead of the usual ridiculous replies of ‘What’s a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this?’ or any of the sort you came up with just to irritate him, you were quiet.
“You okay?” Uramichi asked, eyebrows furrowed.
“Mhmm.” You clutched your binder and papers as bullets of sweat ran down your neck. You were tightly squeezing it to your chest while pursing your lips. Uramichi noticed this.
He knew you well enough by now to know if you were lying. He didn’t have to point out the fact that you were guarding your binder like your life depended on it to figure out what was up.
“He has a new idea for me, doesn’t he?”
You gulped.
“What is it this time?” Uramichi pestered.
“Technically, I’m not supposed to tell you. Company rules and all that,” you said defensively.
“Uh huh,” was all Uramichi could say.
“But you’re not going to like it,” you mentioned next.
“Do I ever?”
And thus, a few days passed by, and you wanted to take him out to lighten the mood.
The sharp screech of the brakes cuts through the noise of people as the train slides into the station, its doors hissing open. The crowd surges forward like a wave crashing against the shore, eager to claim their place in their next journey. Commuters including you and Uramichi scramble to board in a burst of movement like a ripple across water. The soft chime of a distant announcement echoes across the platform, a lady’s voice crisp, soothing and clear, announcing the name of destination. There’s no pushing or shouting, just quiet urgency. In an orderly rush, everyone enters with precision that feels almost choreographed.
“What’s everyone doing out in the middle of the day on a Sunday? Do they not work?” you whispered as a joke.
Uramichi chuckled at your remark. “Not everyone is as ambitious as us, I suppose.” He sighed, a hint of bitterness in his voice. He thought to himself how great it would be just to be able to spend the whole week with you without the annoyance of his job. The prospect of having to deal with Usahara and the others again the next day was a source of increasing stress for him.
You could tell the pang of frustration as this was his only day off. You hoped you weren’t taking away his time from him. But to him, this meant more than anything.
There’s a quiet hum, the faint pulse of the train’s engines reverberating through the floor, like the city’s heartbeat echoing in the darkness below. A gentle murmur filled the air in a sea of faces. Along with the cold hitting your face, you felt Uramichi’s arm squeezing you towards him. He was just helping you keep balance. Plus, an instinctive move to drive you away from anyone on the train with ill intentions. He radiated heat, you were almost worried if he was sick. He was just really warm. So warm.
“Next stop, Odaiba,” a soft robotic voice crackled overhead. The air shifts slightly, as people adjusted their bags and stood up, glancing toward the doors.
Stepping out, the afternoon begins in a soft glow of the sun casting a warm hue over the winter Tokyo streets. Despite still being daytime, neon signs flicker to life, promising adventure around every corner.
“I’ve wanted to go here for so long,” you said excitedly.
Seeing you pumped up brought a sense of joy to his otherwise downtrodden life. He knew well that it was something you had looked forward to. As the two of you walked in together, he mentioned with a hint of embarrassment, “I’ve never been to something like this before.”
“Something new for the both of us then,” you said, an affectionate expression on your face.
The soft flow of twilight lingers outside as you and Uramichi step into the futuristic entrance of a digital art museum. The moment you cross the threshold, the ordinary world slips away, replaced by something otherworldly-an immersive wonderland that seems to pulse with life, blurring the line between art and reality.
The walls pulse with shifting patterns-waves of colors that move like water, never still, always changing. As you walk deeper into the exhibit, you find yourselves surrounded by cascading waterfalls of light, each droplet shimmering like liquid crystal before dissipating into the floor. The sound is gentle, a calming melody of digital water, and it echoes in the space around you, amplifying the magic of the experience.
The air is alive with color. In the next room, you two were surrounded by flowers that bloomed and swirled, petals shifting and changing as if each step you took caused them to bloom in your wake. Uramichi turns to you, eyes wide with wonder as you laughed in delight.
Next, you wander into a darkened room where stars twinkled above and glowing jellyfish float serenely around you. The jellyfish pulse in the air, illuminated in gentle shades of pink, blue, and violet. It’s as if you’ve stepped into the ocean itself, with the creatures drifting through the air like whispers from another world. The beauty of it all is almost overwhelming, and you turn to Uramichi, only to find him gazing at you with a soft smile that feels as timeless as the art surrounding you. You were both caught in this suspended moment, where everything around you stopped in its magic. You felt lucky to have been the only one to see that expression of his right now.
Towards the hallway there was a small, square booth with papers and markers set up. You quickly walked towards it, practically prancing, to see what it was. Seeing as a few people were drawing, you noticed the papers were plain sea animals ready to be colored in. Looking around the display you also saw that there were groups of poorly drawn to beautifully crafted fish and jellyfish swimming in the screens. You had to try this with him.
“Uramichi, come here,” you urged, despite him already next to you.
“What’s this?” he asked before it took a few moments for him to put everything together. “Oh. Oh no.”
“Oh yes,” you said back.
“You can just do this one on your own. I’m good,” he warily waved his hands in denial.
“Come onnn, you’re the best artist in Maman,” you encouraged some more.
“Cut it out,” Uramichi laughed this time.
You sat at the hard booth, patting a seat next to you. Uramichi sighed giving in to your bright-eyed look. A small “yipeee” escaped your lips.
He groaned as he sat down. You waited for him to pick out a fish to color in and let him do his work. He plainly picked out a dark blue marker while you started on yours. It was vivid, and colorful so that it would stand out. You added huge dark, pleading eyes with a shy fingers touch gesture to make it silly. But the colors were pretty, nonetheless.
You glanced over to your boyfriend, struggling to get started but moving his hand eventually. He started slowly, making progress regardless of being forced to do so of his own will.
“I’m done, it looks like we can scan it on this QR code, and it’ll show up on the screens. Oh my god, we can even turn them into little merch like tote bags and shirts,” you exclaimed.
“Please no, Maman has enough of these as there is,” Uramichi pleaded.
You were about to ask what he meant when you glanced over again at his work. It was the Kotori-san face but on his fish and you didn’t know whether to laugh or to be disturbed once again. He tried so hard.
As you both entered your fish drawings, it took a few minutes to see loads of them on the screen, swimming gracefully. You saw Uramichi’s at last and couldn’t help but lose it a little.
“This is going to haunt both of us now,” Uramichi said quietly, defeatedly.
“Ahahaha! Oh my god, please for the love of- don’t show your director this he’ll get more ideas!” you laughed some more, holding your stomach from the ab workout.
The expression on his face made your cackle like a witch. It was almost a miracle no one noticed you two.
Uramichi hid his mouth with his hand, hiding his own self-satisfaction of successfully making you laugh so hard. “Okay, happy now? Can we move on?”
“Yes. Very. And yes, we can,” you answered, still chuckling from amusement.
As you moved into a new room, with the fish still following you to Uramichi’s disapproval, the lights started to shift once more. The last exhibit seems to come alive in response to your movements-waves of color, flowing gently in reaction to the touch of your hand. You both move slowly, watching the way the light bends around your fingers Uramichi isn’t sure whether it’s the art or the company that makes him feel so completely at ease. It’s in these quiet moments, when you are just two people in a world of light, that he realizes how rare it is to share such a breathtaking experience.
The world outside feels just as vibrant as the one you left behind-alive with possibilities, illuminated by the flow of a shared moment that will remain in your hearts for a long time. The memories of the evening lingered with you, as the evening winded down and you both stepped back into the cool night air. The city skyline twinkles in the distance, welcoming you back.
“Well, that was…”
“Overstimulating?” you hastily finished for him.
“Fun,” uramichi said. “A lot of fun.”
You felt like you’ve discovered an entirely new world, one that feels personal and private. Unlike the digital landscape you were both just in, this was more alive and just for you.
“Hungry?” Uramichi asked to snap you out of it.
You just nodded, taking in that mental picture of his softened gaze earlier. You wished you could stay in that moment forever.
“Let’s get something to eat now, yeah?” He said, as he took off his scarf and wrapped it around you cozily.
“Okay,” you said dreamily, falling in love with him once again as he took your hand in his and led you somewhere.
After a nice dinner, you both strolled through one of the many illuminations in the city. It was nearing the holidays, and many lights lit up all winter long to keep the romantic vibes flowing.
It’s a rare night when the streets seemed quieter, the usual rush of people replaced with a calm that feels almost sacred. The sky is a deep indigo, scattered with a sea of lights.
Hand in hand, you walked toward the park, the pathway leading you through tall, leafless trees, their branches stretching up like delicate fingers toward the sky. But it’s the lights that draw your attention-soft twinkles in every direction, a magical display of sea animals and Christmas decorations stretched as far as the eye can see. As you approach, you realize the trees are draped in thousands of tiny, shimmering lights, like stars caught in the branches, casting a warm glow. The air is fragrant with the cool scent of winter, a mix of fresh pine and the subtle hint of roasted chestnuts from nearby vendors.
There’s a gentle silence between you, the kind that doesn’t need words.
You broke it by saying, “I can’t believe how beautiful this time of year is.” Your voice feels like a secret shared only between the two of you.
“Yeah,” Uramichi replied. “I’m glad I dragged you out,” he added.
“Um, who dragged who out? That was all me, you’re welcome,” you corrected.
“You seem to be misremembering how you would be sleeping in until 2 p.m. if it weren’t for me waking your ass up,” Uramichi reminded you.
“Okay well, going here was my idea. Besides, isn’t it past your bedtime, old man?”
Uramichi let out a scoff of protest. A hint of defensiveness present with a mix of faux offense and amusement. He then looked at you with a slight smirk on his face now. “You won’t be calling me old when I’m kicking your ass on the gym machines.”
You huff at his retaliation. He had always wanted you to go to the gym with him. You hated exercise. Even more so in public.
“Hah, that’s not going to work on me tonight,” you shut down his attempt to persuade you to work out with him. Deep down he knew convincing you wasn’t going to be easy, but you were competitive at heart once he really got to know you.
“Let’s call it a night then,” Uramichi said.
Facing each other, you’re bathed in the soft light, your features flowing faintly as the moment lingers between you two. The reflection of the lights dances in your eyes, and for a moment, you feel like you’re both suspended in this perfect night, far removed from reality.
Slowly, gently, he leans in, your lips meeting in a kiss that feels like it was meant to happen beneath the twinkling lights in this quiet corner of the world. You felt his warmth again, electricity surging throughout your body. Every kiss from him felt like it was the first one.
When you pull away, the smile on Uramichi’s face mirrors your own-content, happy, and alive with the shared beauty of the illumination.
You continue to walk hand in hand, grabbing hot chocolate at a convenience store on the way back home, laughter filled the air as the both of you talked. The lights continue to flicker around you, casting a warm glow on your path, but it wasn’t the illumination that did so. The world is full of noise and anxiety, but it feels as though everything has quieted down tonight, leaving only the two of you, wrapped in the soft embrace of a winter’s night.
“Speaking of which, [y/n], did you get something from the gift store?” Uramichi asked, noticing a plastic bag wrapped around your arm with the museum logo on it.
You were both back at his apartment, you were staying the night, obviously. The warm kotatsu was a nice escape from the harsh cold winds outside. The TV was on, snacks were arranged on the table, and hot drinks were made to relax the night in before the dreadful workday comes tomorrow.
“Surprised you haven’t seen it until now. I got it while you were in the bathroom,” you said with vivid anticipation.
He just stared at you, not in awe, but in suspicion.
“Wh-what? I’m not going to show you if that’s what you want, it’s one of your Christmas gifts,” you said defensively.
He said nothing, he just had a slight idea already of the contents. With that you swiftly grabbed the bag and went into the other room to wrap it. Both saying nothing about it for the rest of the night.
You took out the gifts which contained his Kotori-san faced fish mug along with your own fish design together in the same. All you had to now was wait to see the look on his face. It was ready to be opened on the holidays along with the memories of this day etched in the quiet radiance of your love.
