Chapter Text
The soft golden light of dawn seeped into the secluded meadow just outside Willow Creek, casting an ethereal glow over the frost-kissed grass. Kate stirred first, her eyes fluttering open to the sight of Lucy sprawled next to her on the thick blanket they’d brought the previous night. The meadow had been Kate’s surprise—a quiet escape to end the year together, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of nature.
Lucy stretched, her curls messy and her face glowing with a relaxed contentment. "Morning, kate," she teased, catching Kate staring.
Kate smiled, brushing off her own grogginess. "Morning, Luce."
Lucy smirked, her eyes glinting mischievously. "You look thoroughly tired, Doc. I think you need rest. Long night?"
Kate blushed deeply, the tips of her ears turning red. "I’m fine," she said quickly, brushing imaginary dust off her jeans as she stood. "Just… maybe a good hot bath."
The teasing faded from Lucy’s face as she rose to her feet. She stepped close to Kate, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Her voice softened. "You sure you’re okay?"
Kate nodded, her lips curving into a small smile. "I’m okay, Luce. Really."
Lucy studied her for a moment longer, then smiled back. "Alright. Let’s head back before people send out search parties looking for us."
Kate chuckled softly, her shyness peeking through. "I think they’d send one for you first, Luce. Everyone in town seems to adore you."
"Don’t sell yourself short, Doc," Lucy said, slinging an arm around Kate’s shoulders as they walked toward the Jeep. "They’d send one for you too. You’re kind of a big deal."
Kate smiled shyly. "Okay, Lucy Tara, let’s get going."
Lucy grinned, bowing dramatically. "Your wish is my command, Doc."
---
As Lucy drove, Kate relaxed in the passenger seat, assuming they were heading back to Lucy’s old place. But as the Jeep turned down a different road, a frown crept across her face. "Luce, this isn’t the way to your house…"
Lucy’s smile was unreadable as she pulled into the driveway of a cozy two-story house. The wraparound porch gleamed in the morning light, the soft blue siding and white shutters giving the home a warm, inviting charm.
"Lucy?" Kate asked, her confusion clear.
Lucy parked the Jeep and turned to Kate, her expression earnest yet hopeful. "On Christmas, I gave you the keys to this place. I was going to ask you then to come and live here with me, but… I wanted the timing to feel perfect. And now, on the first day of the new year, I think it’s time. If you want to, Doc… I really want us to start living together. For real."
Kate’s eyes softened, her smile growing as she reached for Lucy’s hand. "I want that too, Luce. This New Year would’ve never been so good without you. It’s the perfect start."
Leaning over, Kate pressed a tender kiss to Lucy’s lips, her heart swelling with warmth. "Let’s go see our home, Luce."
Lucy’s grin turned cheeky as she stepped out of the Jeep and opened the door for Kate. "After you, Doc."
---
Inside, the house was cozy yet spacious, filled with light and warmth. The living room held plush furniture and bookshelves waiting to be filled, while the kitchen gleamed with modern appliances. Kate wandered through the rooms, taking in every thoughtful detail.
As they explored, Kate noticed the many bedrooms. "Luce," she asked, turning to her with a raised eyebrow, "why so many rooms? We could’ve been fine in your old house."
Lucy wrapped her arms around Kate’s waist, pulling her close with a mischievous glint in her eye. "Well, Doc," she began, her voice low and teasing, "I have this little dream about running around after a few little blond heads with brown eyes someday."
Kate’s eyes widened, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson. She buried her face in Lucy’s shoulder, her voice muffled as she groaned, "Lucy…"
Lucy laughed softly, rubbing soothing circles on Kate’s back. "Hey, it’s okay, babe. It’s not a dealbreaker or anything. I was just… dreaming out loud. We’re good, okay?"
Kate finally pulled back, her eyes a little misty but full of warmth. "I… I want that too, Luce. Someday. I just never thought I’d get to dream about a future like that. Thank you for giving me this happiness."
Lucy’s expression softened, her heart swelling. "I love you, Doc. Always."
Kate blushed but added with a teasing smile, "But I have one condition."
Lucy raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What’s that?"
Kate’s grin turned shy. "I want mini-you running around. That’s my dream. Not blond heads."
Lucy laughed loudly, throwing her head back. "Are you sure you’d survive my mini versions, Doc? They’d be all chaos and mischief."
Kate groaned, wrapping her arms around Lucy again. "I’ll try my best, considering all the chaos I’ll have to deal with."
Lucy kissed her temple, murmuring, "Deal."
"Now," Kate said, breaking the tender moment, "we’d better get going. My mom’s expecting us for lunch, and I don’t want to hear her teasing."
Lucy smirked. "Oh, Doc. I think your mom’s teasing is the best part of my day."
Kate rolled her eyes fondly. "You’re impossible, Tara."
Lucy grinned, lacing her fingers with Kate’s as they stepped out into the sunshine. "Impossible, but yours."

The warm aroma of freshly baked bread and roasted vegetables filled the Whistler household as Kate and Lucy sat at the dining table, awaiting lunch. Mrs. Whistler bustled around the kitchen, humming a cheery tune, but Kate could feel her mother’s teasing energy radiating from across the room.
"So," Mrs. Whistler started, her tone overly casual as she carried a tray to the table, "Kathrine, why haven’t you been home much these past few days? Where exactly have you been sneaking off to?"
Kate groaned internally, already sensing the onslaught of teasing. "I’ve been busy, Mom."
"Busy, hmm? Are you working late at the clinic? Have you become so obsessed with your machines that you’re staying there now?" Mrs. Whistler teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Kate sighed, her ears turning red. "No, Mom. I’m not living at the clinic."
Lucy, sitting beside Kate, chuckled softly. Kate shifted nervously in her seat, but before she could answer further, Lucy’s warm hand landed on her thigh, giving it a gentle, reassuring squeeze. Kate took a deep breath, steeling herself.
"I’ve been staying with Lucy," Kate admitted, her voice steady despite her flushed cheeks. "We’re… moving in together. Into our new shared home."
For a moment, the room went quiet as Mrs. Whistler studied her daughter. Kate’s heart raced, her palms slightly damp as she prepared for her mother’s reaction. Then, Mrs. Whistler let out a loud squeal, springing from her chair and pulling Kate into a tight hug.
"Oh, Kathrine, I’m so happy for you!" she exclaimed, her voice full of warmth. "I knew Lucy made you happy, and this just proves it. I’m so glad you two are taking this big step."
Kate hugged her back, her shy smile betraying her relief.
"Thank you, Mom," Kate murmured, her voice soft.
Lucy, watching the scene with a fond smile, spoke up earnestly. "Thank you for trusting me with your daughter, Mrs. Whistler. I promise I’ll do everything to keep her happy."
Mrs. Whistler turned to Lucy, pulling her into an enthusiastic hug. "Oh, Lucy, I had no doubt! I knew you’d make her fall in love with the magic of this town. And look at that—she didn’t just fall in love with the town, she fell for the magician herself!"
Lucy burst out laughing at the compliment, while Kate groaned, burying her face in her hands. "Mom, please don’t feed her ego. She’s insufferable as it is."
The laughter at the table only grew louder.
---
Throughout lunch, Mrs. Whistler’s teasing didn’t let up.
"So, Kathrine," her mother started, passing Kate a plate of roasted potatoes, "do you think you’ll be able to adjust to living with Lucy? She’s such a free spirit, after all. And you, my dear, are… well, let’s say, a bit more particular."
Lucy stifled a laugh, while Kate groaned, glaring at her mother. "I’ll be fine, Mom. It’s not like I’m some tyrant."
"Oh, Lucy," Mrs. Whistler said, turning to her with mock pity, "you’re in for quite the adventure, living with my strict, no-nonsense, meticulous daughter. Poor you!"
Lucy grinned, playing along. "I think I can handle it, Mrs. Whistler. I mean, she’s pretty cute when she’s bossy."
Kate’s face turned scarlet as she glared at Lucy. "Lucy!"
"See?" Mrs. Whistler chimed in, her grin widening. "You’ll need a lot of patience, Lucy. Kathrine has been like this since she was a little girl. Always serious, always precise. I remember one time—"
"Mom, no," Kate interrupted, her voice a mix of mortification and warning.
But Mrs. Whistler was unstoppable. "—she organized her toy medical kit by size, function, and color. Wouldn’t let her little friends play with it until they followed her rules!"
Lucy laughed so hard she nearly choked on her drink. Kate groaned again, burying her face in her hands. "I can’t believe you’re telling her this."
"Oh, come on, Kathrine," her mom said, waving her hand dismissively. "It’s endearing!"
Kate, despite her exasperation, couldn’t help but smile softly. Watching her mother and Lucy bond, laughing and teasing, filled her heart with a warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time.
As lunch continued, Mrs. Whistler didn’t let up, finding every opportunity to tease Kate about her meticulous habits and Lucy’s carefree charm. Kate groaned and blushed at certain remarks, but her heart swelled as she watched the two people she loved most laughing heartily together.
By the end of the meal, Kate leaned back in her chair, her face slightly flushed but her heart full. She glanced at Lucy, who was grinning from ear to ear.
"You okay, Doc?" Lucy asked, her tone light but her eyes warm.
Kate rolled her eyes fondly. "I’m fine. Just… reminded that I’m outnumbered here."
Lucy chuckled, reaching over to squeeze Kate’s hand. "Don’t worry, Doc. I’ve got your back. Most of the time."
Kate groaned again, but this time, a small, content smile played on her lips. Her heart was full, her soul at peace, surrounded by love and laughter. For the first time in a long time, everything felt exactly as it should.
