Work Text:

Love is just around the corner, Melina had told Kate. You just have to look for it.

Those words from the tea leaves had haunted Kate all night as she tossed and turned. Thankfully Lila was a heavy sleeper, or she surely would have asked her what was wrong.

Oh, nothing, Kate imagined herself telling Lila as she stared at the ceiling, waiting for the sun to rise. I just have a massive crush on your Aunt Yelena. She snorted. Like that would go over well.

Lucky shifted his head where it rested on Kate’s thigh, whining as he stared at her with his one eye. Kate sighed, petting his head.

“It’s okay, Pizza Dog,” she said. “I’ll figure it out one way or another.”

Kate was taking her presents upstairs -she wasn’t really their daughter or their anything, they didn’t need to give her presents- when a throat was cleared next to her.

“Oh!” Kate started, seeing Yelena there. “I didn’t know anyone else was upstairs.” She blushed, like she always did when Yelena looked at her for any extended period of time. “Can I help you with something?”

“I think it is more something that I can help you with,” Yelena said, pointing just above Kate’s head.

When she looked up, there was a small bunch of greenery with tiny white berries hanging from the ceiling.

There was a finger on her chin, turning her head, and then there were warm lips brushing hers.

S Rozhdestvom, Kate Bishop,” Yelena said against her lips, and then she brushed past her on her way down the stairs.

All Kate could do was blink stupidly for what was probably a solid minute. Then she looked down at the dog staring worriedly up at her.

“That mistletoe wasn’t there this morning, was it?”

Boof.”

“Oh, okay. Didn’t think so.”

Notes:

S Rozhdestvom - phonetic Russian for "Merry Christmas"
