Ring, ring.
‘Please pick up, please pick up.’
Ring, ring.
“Hello?”
“How fast can you grab the pinkest outfit you own and bring it to the mall?”
“Kit?”
“Elora! I’m serious. How long?”
“I don’t know? Maybe 10 minutes?”
Kit bit her lip as she pulled up Jade’s last text notification on her watch.
Where are you? Previews start in 14 minutes.
“What did you do? You forgot to dress up didn’t you?”
Kit looked down at her baggy shirt. It was official merchandise from Wicked, The Musical at least. She had purchased them a matching pair when she had taken Jade to see the Broadway show last year for her birthday. When Jade had suggested they dress up to see the new movie, Kit had assumed that this was what she meant…
Kit hid behind a column in the movie theatre lobby, concealing herself from view as she spied on her best friend.
Her best friend who was a carbon copy of the infamous Elphaba, right down to her emerald green skin. Only Jade’s ginger curls poking out from beneath the iconic bent witch’s hat gave her away.
“I might have seriously underestimated her enthusiasm for this movie.”
Jade’s cosplay was so convincing that Kit was surprised people didn’t think Jade was being paid to promote the movie. Kit was amazed people weren’t bombarding her to take selfies with her, instead of sending amused glances and chuckles her way.
“Kit! Jade has been talking about this for weeks!”
“I know, I know.”
Kit did know. And she knew she still had time to make things right. Just enough time.
Kit frantically shot off a reply on her watch so Jade knew she wasn’t being stood up.
Im sorry. Costume needed some finishing touches. I’ll be there before the movie starts - I promise!
“Oh and Elora?”
“Yes?”
“Do you still have that wig you used to wear?”

‘For Jade, and only Jade, do I endure this agony.’
When Kit finally emerged and wobbled over in sparkling high heels to stand before Jade, Jade didn’t recognise her.
Kit didn’t wear pink. Or at least she hadn’t worn pink since she was a child when Sorsha had dictated her wardrobe.
And yet there she stood in a tight little thing out of her nightmares; all tailored angles with frilly shoulders, sheer panels, delicate buttons and a big bow cinched around her waste.
All extremely pink.
Topped off with a bouncy blonde wig, Kit wasn’t surprised that she didn’t look at all like herself.
Jade’s eyes widened comically as she realised it was Kit dressed as Glinda standing in front of her.
A huge grin transformed the stressed look Jade had been wearing until she was beaming at Kit in excitement.
“You’re pink!” Jade pointed out.
Jade’s eyes kept raking over Kit’s body, devouring her curvy silhouette as she’d never seen it displayed before.
Kit felt her cheeks colouring to add to her ensemble.
“Yeah well, you’re green,” Kit returned.
Jade giggled brightly.
“We make quite the pair don’t we?”
“I’m sorry I’m late-”
“No you’re perfectly on time. Let’s go.”
Jade held out her hand for Kit to take.
Kit was thankful for the support so she didn’t break an ankle on the walk into the cinema.

… And then, just like now…
… We can say …
… We're just two friends …
… Two good friends …
… Two best friends …
As Kit felt Jade take her hand to thread their fingers together and squeeze at the close of ‘One Short Day’, Kit knew that she’d done good.
Perhaps even better than ‘two best friends’ good.
She really owed Elora big time.
