Summary
Hazel Callahan walks into a 7/11 late at night and bumps into the only person she's currently actively angry at. Tim. They talk it out, though, and about other things (cough cough, unrequited feelings they have towards certain people in their lives?)
---“That sounds… scary.”
“Scary how?”
“If someone else decides who you are, what happens when they’re not around?”
Tim laughs, “I just stop existing then.”
Hazel laughs too, and she hopes Tim meant it as a joke. When he continues without comment, she knows she got it right.
“I mean… do other people not affect you at all?” Tim asked.
“I like to think I know who I am,” Hazel says, opening the bag of pretzels and taking a fistful and placing one in her mouth.
“Yeah, but you can’t be immune to-” Tim waved his free hand vaguely, “everyone else.”
Hazel remembers PJ.
“I’m not, I guess. Just because I know who I am doesn’t make it easy.”

Summary
Isabel had this way of showing up even when she wasn’t there, like in middle school when Josie would start a new workbook, she’d flip through different pages near the end, writing messages to her future self in a lead pencil to forget about and then smile at once she found them.
Except Josie must have gotten too trigger-happy, using a permanent marker to insert Isabel into almost every aspect of her life. Like old memories folded into the pages of a novel, notes sneaking into a song that create dissonance in the chord. She was now reaping the consequences of her own actions.
The taste of her first kiss still lingered in her mouth.
If she tries hard enough, she can convince herself she’s back there.
Everything is okay. They are in the process of falling in love. Passion and intensity frozen in time.
Nothing bad has happened yet.

Post Josabel breakup, Josie is NOT coping well; she keeps imagining Isabel showing up, and maybe manifestation works because eventually Isabel actually does.

“I’m not gonna make out with you if you don’t want me to, like that part’s fine. Obviously.” PJ pulled her hand away from Hazel’s lips, “But don’t psychoanalyse me or whatever. I don’t want to process shit or talk about my feelings. I just want to get drunk- or wine drunk, and be stupid. So please don’t ruin this with like… talking.”
Hazel nodded fast, as if going fast enough could undo what she said, “Yeah, totally. Sorry, I shouldn’t have said- y’know. Sorry.”
She wasn’t going to ruin anything. She could keep her mouth shut.
Hazel bit the inside of her cheek hard, the way she did when she wanted to say something but knew she probably shouldn’t.
She wasn’t sure what was worse, PJ not wanting to kiss her for the right reasons, or the fact that she kind of wished she had kissed PJ anyway.
Hazel wished PJ actually wanted her.
