We'll Be Fine

Summary:

Weiss and Ruby have been in a relationship for a few months now. They've arrived in Atlas, and Ruby has been reunited with her best friend, Penny. Unfortunately for Weiss, these creeping feelings of doubt start to surface, causing her to question some things. Confused and frustrated, she ends up calling one of her teammates who proceeds to talk some sense into her. Heartwarming conversations ensue.

Set in an AU of early V7 where WR has been established for a while now, things haven't gone off the rails in Atlas yet, and the team took their time getting to Atlas.

Notes:

Hey everyone! I am back with another WR fic! This was a prompt given to me for Power_Taco's Secret Santa challenge, and I finally was able to finish it. Don't mind that it's on the deadline date.

I don't have much to say for this one. The prompt that was given to me will be down below, and the rest of my thoughts will be in the end-notes. Hope you all enjoy, and Happy New Year!

Title is from "We'll Be Fine" by Rob Scallon. It's an instrumental, but I would suggest listening to it and his other clean guitar/midwest emo music as you read this, as that's what I was listening to.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Weiss was feeling depressed.

A rarity for her. She was a master at locking up her emotions and throwing away the key, never to be revealed unless it was forced out of her.

But with what was going on right now, she couldn’t help it.

Because Ruby and Penny were reunited and spending a lot of time together, and Weiss really wasn’t sure how to feel about it.

‘I’m glad Penny is alive and well… so why in the world aren’t you happy, Weiss?’ the ex-heiress thought to herself. She knew how much she meant to Ruby, and Weiss found herself growing fond of the android who had a pure soul and a heart of gold. She knew Penny was one of Ruby’s first friends, and the last thing she wanted was to drive a wedge between that friendship.

At the same time, though… there were these nagging feelings of doubt clawing at the back of her mind.

See, her and Ruby had been together for a few months now. Their relationship began the night of the Battle of Haven. Weiss almost lost her life, and was only saved by Jaune unlocking his Semblance. That night, after the group figured out their next move, Ruby pulled her aside into her room and told her just how much she loved her, and how she couldn’t lose her, and that waking up to seeing her on the ground, rapidly losing blood, sparked the courage needed for her to tell Weiss how she felt. Weiss was elated to know that Ruby returned her feelings, and made sure that her partner knew that.

Ever since then, they remained side by side, with the journey to Atlas only bringing them closer together. Their trip to Argus got delayed for about a month, due to a slew of Grimm attacks and inclement weather that just refused to relent. Finally, the train took off… only for part of it to be derailed, leaving Team RWBY, Oscar/Oz, Maria and Qrow to find their way to Brunswick Farms, with some shocking revelations along the way.

Brunswick Farms turned out to be the worst place to rest. The events of the Apathy were a reoccurring nightmare within Weiss’ mind, and she was sure Ruby dealt with them too. Thank the Gods they were there for only a night; Weiss hated to think about what would’ve happened to them all had they stayed longer.

Then their trip was forced to a stop in Argus, when the blockade denied them entry to Atlas. Ozpin was insistent on finding a way to continue forward, but Team RWBY, along with Team JNR, basically told him to fuck off; just in a more polite way. They were only planning to spend a week or so there, but that week ended up turning into two, into three, into four, and suddenly two months had gone by. The blockade still hadn’t lifted, so they had to devise a plan to get past. Ozpin didn’t say a word in that entire time, which surprised Weiss, but she wasn’t complaining.

Then, after they finally got a move on, her and Ruby fought together against the mech. Weiss still remembered her heart dropping as Ruby fell from the giant robot, and the pointed question she asked her after just barely catching her was out of fear more than anything.

And then Ruby took down the massive Grimm that the mech was supposed to protect Argus against. There were so many moments in that fight where Weiss thought she was going to lose her, but she pulled through.

They pulled through.

They were partners, after all. That’s what they did. They supported each other through the thick and thin, they helped each other when one of them was down and out, and above all else, they loved and cared for each other.

It was kind of ironic, in a sense. If you had told Weiss back during her early Beacon days that she would fall in love with a girl who, in her opinion at the time, was naïve, childish, dim-witted, far too hyperactive for her own good, and her eventual leader, she would’ve thrown an array of insults at you before turning away and never talking to you again.

Now, though? After everything they’ve been through?

She couldn’t imagine being with anyone else.

Which brought her to now.

“Weiss?”

“Hm?” Shaken out of her thoughts, the ex-heiress looked towards her lover, who was grinning at her. Penny was next to her, giving her that innocent and bright-eyed smile that tore at Weiss’ soul for reasons that were kept close to her heart.

“Me and Penny were gonna go out on patrol. Did you wanna join us? Ruby asked, love shining in those beautiful silver eyes of hers, and Weiss couldn’t hold back a small gasp at the sight.

She was about to reply "yes", as she wanted nothing more than to spend time with her partner, but something held her back. Ruby hadn’t seen Penny in so long. As much as she longed to join them, the last thing she wanted to do was intrude on their time together.

“It’s alright,” Weiss said after a moment. “I appreciate the offer, but I need to meet with my sister about… some things.”

It was a lousy excuse, and she knew Ruby could see right through her, given the hint of sadness hidden within, but her partner relented nonetheless.

“Well… okay, I guess. If you change your mind, call me. I’m only a ring away!” she said before moving to give Weiss a quick hug and a kiss.

“I love you. I’ll see you later?”

“That you will. I love you too. Have fun, and stay safe.”

“Always! Come on Penny, let’s go fight some Grimm!” With that, the duo started making their way out of Atlas Academy, leaving Weiss in their dorm alone with her thoughts.

And those thoughts were threatening to consume her.

Collapsing onto her bed, she let out a deep sigh. It wasn’t that she was worried about Ruby leaving her for Penny. Far from it. She knew with certainty that Ruby was devoted to her, and vice versa.

No, it was the fact that her partner was just so… happy with Penny. They shared the same interests, their combat styles meshed well together, and every time one of them walked into a room, the other’s eyes would light up and then they would strike up a conversation like they weren’t just separated for months…

Okay. Maybe she was a little bit jealous.

Logically, Weiss knew that there was no reason for her to be jealous. Ruby acted the same way with her when they reunited at Haven. It’s just how her partner was. Selfless, caring, kind, always striving to see the good in people…

All those attributes contributed to why Weiss fell in love with her.

Not to mention how strong she was…

Shaking her head and fighting back the creeping blush that was rising onto her cheeks, Weiss figured she should actually do something productive rather than waste away in the dorm. The question was, what could she do that would distract her racing mind?

There were all sorts of patrols she could do, as a Huntresses’ work was never done, but she didn’t want to run into Ruby and Penny and interrupt their time together.

‘Why would that be such a bad thing though? You were literally invited.’

‘Because…’

‘Give yourself one good reason why.’

‘Because it’s selfish.’

She was sure that her reasoning would collapse onto itself the second anyone looked at it with a magnifying glass, but in the moment it made sense to her. It was clear as day to her that Ruby and Penny were a far better fit together than Ruby and herself.

At the same time though, she loved Ruby so damn much it hurt, and she wanted to keep her partner close to show her just how much she loved her.

Very selfish of her, indeed.

Ugh. She needed advice at this point, because this back-and-forth that was happening within her mind was getting her nowhere.

Pulling out her Scroll, she looked through her contacts before landing on Blake. The Faunus would probably be the best one to help her work through her feelings, but her and Yang had been fixing their damaged relationship, and she didn’t want to get in the way of that.

Pietro also popped up, but it’s not like she could just go to Penny’s father and ask him if Penny had any feelings for Ruby. She would die of embarrassment.

Winter showed up next, but the last thing Weiss wanted to do was bother her with her relationship issues. Her sister was far too busy with helping Ironwood and the Ace-Ops get Amity Tower up and running, and she was pretty sure her sister would find what she was going through trivial at the very least, considering she was busy with trying to prepare Atlas' defenses against Salem.

What the hell was she thinking? Here she was, lamenting the fact that Ruby was reunited with her best friend, wondering if she was good enough for her while they were in the middle of a damn war.

How childish of her.

Unfortunately, her mind wouldn’t listen. Either she talked this out with someone or it was going to keep her distracted, and distraction was not a luxury she could afford. With a resigned sigh, she pulled up Blake’s contact info and hit the call button, praying to the Gods above that she wasn’t interrupting something important.

The Scroll rang twice before it went to voicemail, but a text message quickly followed afterwards.

“Call Yang if important. In a hunt.”

Weiss frowned. She really didn’t want to deal with Yang’s inevitable teasing… but it was her only shot at this point.

Taking a breath to steel herself, she sent a quick “okay back to Blake before finding Yang in her contacts and calling her. This time, the Scroll rang three times before the blonde’s cheerful voice echoed through.

“Weiss? What’s up?”

“Yang. Are you busy?”

“Not really. I just finished training, and Blake’s on a hunt so I got nothing much to do. Did you need something?”

Weiss let out a quiet sigh. She couldn’t beat around the bush, as Yang would just get more and more curious. It would be better for her own sake if she just spat it out.

“I… er…”

And of course this is when she would freeze up. Damn her mind.

“You good, Weiss?”   Yang asked after a moment.

“… not really.”

“What’s wrong? Did your piece of shit dad say something to you? Do I need to go teach him a lesson?”

“No, it’s not him, and you know better than to do that… even if I wish that were the case.”

“Then speak up. You’re starting to worry me.”

The ex-heiress grimaced. So much for not beating around the bush.

“It’s… I just need some… advice…”

“About?”

“Me… and Ruby.”

Silence followed those words, and Weiss braced herself for a possible berating from her protective teammate.

“Open the door, Weiss.”

Confused, she went over to the door to unlock it, not realizing that Ruby had locked it behind her. Opening it revealed a slightly exhausted Yang.

“Yang? How did you get here so quick?” she asked, moving to the side to let her teammate in.

“I was in the training room down the hall,” the blonde replied as she entered, sitting down on her bed and starting a few stretches. “Besides, it sounded like you needed to talk in person.”

“I mean…” Weiss trailed off, not sure how to respond to that. Facing Yang in person about the predicament she found herself in was both daunting and relieving at the same time.

“I already know you’re not thinking of breaking up with my sister,” Yang continued. “You’re far too in love with her to do that, and I’d kick your ass on top of it. So what’s going on?”

The ex-heiress was silent for a moment, unsure of how to even begin explaining her feelings. Sighing again, she sat down at the desk and began tapping the table in a short yet steady rhythm. It was something she picked up from Winter long ago, and the movement was comforting.

“I’m… not sure how to start,” she admitted, looking away. “You’re right in that I don’t want to break up with her. I could never imagine doing such a thing. It’s just…”

The words left her mind once again, and Weiss cursed herself for being so timid about this. All she had to do was speak her thoughts out loud, and she never had a hard time doing that before, so why was she struggling with it now?

“Is this about Penny?”

Surprised, Weiss glanced up to Yang to see an understanding expression on her face.

“How did…?”

“Simple. Ever since we got here and Rubes reunited with Penny, you… haven’t really been yourself. You’re not spending nearly as much time with her as you did back on our journey here. You’ve almost seemed…”

“Worried? Confused? Out of my depth?”

“Yeah. See, there’s the words you were looking for. Go ahead and spill.”

The ex-heiress looked towards the ground this time, taking a breath to steady herself.

“I just… I don’t want to come in between their friendship. Penny was one of Ruby’s first friends back at Beacon, and she saw her die… of course they would want to catch up and spend time together, and I don’t want to get in the way of that…”

“But?”

“But at the same time, there’s this selfish part of me that feels like... like I’m losing her. I know I’m not though, and that’s the most frustrating part of all of this…”

“There’s something else, isn’t there?” Yang asked carefully. “Something that’s eating away at you.”

“I… yes… it’s just…”

“Come on, Weiss. Let it out,” Yang prompted as she moved to lock the door again, hoping that it would provide a sense of security for Weiss. She had a feeling that Ruby walking in on this would immediately cause her to shut down and bury it deep within the recesses of her mind, and what her teammate needed was the opposite of that. The thankful glance the ex-heiress gave her confirmed that she did the right thing.

“There’s… a certain train of thought that’s been nagging at me since we arrived here,” Weiss continued. “The way Ruby and Penny interact, their shared interests…”

A pause followed before she finished with a quiet voice that was unlike her.

“… What if I’m not good enough for her?”

Yang raised an eyebrow in surprise, not expecting that outcome. Weiss was quite prideful, and while she had gotten far better about it over the two years they had known each other, the one thing that she defended fiercely was her relationship with Ruby. Weiss had told them all stories of how her kingdom wasn’t exactly the friendliest to anyone that could be seen as different, and that quickly became apparent.

The first day they arrived in Atlas, before the sirens went off, the red and white duo received quite a lot of raised eyebrows and judgmental expressions towards how close they were, to the point where Ruby ended up putting her hood on and Weiss shot daggers in the form of glares towards anyone who even dared looked at them the wrong way. Once they got up to Atlas, the reactions were more approving, but being on the receiving end of hate was a feeling that lingered for a while afterwards, and it became clear to Yang that those feelings manifested into doubt for her icy teammate.

“So… have you actually talked to Ruby about this?” Yang questioned, although she already knew the answer. Weiss gave her a blank stare which confirmed the blonde’s theory.

“Right… so instead of talking to your girlfriend, you decided to talk to me?”

“I tried calling Blake first,” Weiss admitted, “but she told me to talk to you if it was important, so here I am.”

“Here you are, indeed… you wanna know what I’m gonna tell you?”

“To talk to her?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know if I can-”

“Don’t even try, Weiss,” Yang interrupted. “Come on, you know Ruby. She probably doesn’t even realize how she’s making you feel.”

“It’s not like I blame her.”

“I know. But still, you need to talk to her.”

Weiss ended up looking away again, and Yang couldn’t hold back a sigh. If her teammate was really going to be stubborn about this, then she would just have to pull out the big guns and aim at her pride. She was going to regret it later, but it was necessary right now.

“Let me put it this way,” Yang stated. “You’re telling me the great Weiss Schnee, known for giving people a piece of her mind, never backing down from a challenge, and is terrifying when she gets angry, is scared of talking to her girlfriend?”

“I…” Weiss paused, before looking back up at Yang with a slight glare.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Exactly what you think it does, princess. I’ve seen you take down hordes of Grimm, the giant robot back at Argus, and face your asshole of a father with no fear. Is talking to Ruby about how you feel seriously tripping you up this bad?”

“It’s quite scary, to be honest,” Weiss replied. “You know how hard it is for me to open up about my feelings… and she and I have only been together for a few months.”

“But she was your best friend before that, right? What’s changed?”

The ex-heiress blinked, and Yang knew she got through to her right then and there. Clearly, Weiss was so focused on them being together that she almost forgot what brought them together in the first place.

Not by choice, of course. No, that was the fear that was talking. Yang simply had to remind her of some basic logic was all, which she was more than happy to do. It was kind of ironic though. Normally, Weiss was the one driven by logic and Yang by her emotions.

‘Huh. Guess I know what it’s like on the other side now,’ Yang thought to herself while waiting for Weiss to speak up.

“I can’t believe I… you’re right,” her icy teammate responded after a moment. “All this time, I’ve been so worried about how’d she react as my girlfriend that I didn’t think about how’d she react as my best friend… Thank you, Yang.”

“No worries, Ice Queen. Did that settle some of your doubts, too?”

“Unfortunately not. That’ll only be resolved by talking to her. I’ll just have to wait until she gets back from patrol with Penny-”

Suddenly, a loud slam on the door was heard, causing both Weiss and Yang to whip around towards it. A painful “ugh” echoed out from behind it, and Weiss recognized it to be the sound of her partner’s voice. Yang moved to quickly open the door, revealing Ruby rubbing her nose in annoyance.

“Hey Rubes! Glad you could join us!” Yang cheerfully said, only to receive a mild glare in return.

“Why was the door locked?” her sister asked. “I don’t remember locking it.”

“Atlas Academy dorms have an auto-locking feature for their doors,” Weiss replied, thinking quickly. “Yang must’ve accidentally turned it on when she got here.”

Another groan echoed out from their leader as she proceeded to enter the room and flop onto her bed after setting Crescent Rose down and giving her partner a quick hug and kiss. Raising an eyebrow, Weiss and Yang exchanged a glance of confusion.

“You weren’t on patrol that long, my love,” the ex-heiress spoke up. “Are you alright?”

The cloaked Huntress gave a thumbs-up in response before letting her hand drop against the side of the bed. A moment of silence ensued before Ruby let out a deep sigh.

“Sorry… I’m just really tired,” she explained. “Yeah, the patrol was short, but there were a lot more Grimm than either of us expected… and Penny has far more energy than I do.”

“Where was this at?” Yang asked.

“The southern part of the wall. Lots and lots of Beowolves. We don’t know what triggered the horde, but rest assured, they’re all taken care of… at the expense of my pride.”

“Oh? Why’s that?”

Ruby slowly sat herself up into a more comfortable position before replying, “Penny killed more Grimm than me!”

A snicker escaped Yang’s lips, only for Ruby to attempt to give her a mock punch, which the blonde easily side-stepped. The glare she received in response was absolutely worth it to Yang. Weiss, on the other hand, was chuckling on the inside but made sure to keep that contained within.

“We were having a competition to see who could kill more Grimm,” Ruby continued. “And she won by two! Two Grimm! I was using my Semblance to swoop in and cleave the last two Beowolves, but Penny was faster and used Floating Array from a distance to slice them up.”

Another exchanged glance between the yellow-and-white pair was shared as Ruby threw up her hands in exasperation.

“I was so close too!” she finished before flopping back down onto the bed with a dramatic sigh. Weiss took that moment to move to the bed as well, sitting down next to her and gently brushing her fingers through her partner’s red-tipped hair.

“I’m sure you’ll beat her next time,” the ex-heiress consoled. “There’s always another day, right?”

Ruby nodded slightly before turning over to lean into her partner more. “Yeah… we’re planning on going out tomorrow for another patrol. A Huntresses’ work is never done, it seems. Did you wanna come with this time? I miss going out on hunts with you.”

Weiss internally froze, and was about to reply with her now automatic response of no, but Yang stopped her with a look.

“Perhaps,” she said instead, receiving a nod from Yang and a murmured “alright” from Ruby. A momentary quiet followed that sentence before Yang made a show of checking her Scroll.

“Oh, sweet, Blake finished her hunt. I’m gonna go catch up with her,” Yang explained as she sent her partner a quick text before putting her Scroll away and moving to the door. “Get some rest Rubes, and Weiss, remember what I asked you. See ya guys!”

The ex-heiress shot the blonde a glare at the way-too-obvious hint, but Yang was already gone, having locked the door behind her. Now it was just her and Ruby, which was both delightful and dreadful at the same time for her.

The cloaked Huntress, for her part, seemed to be content in relaxing for the time being, so Weiss took that moment to gather her thoughts and prepare herself for what still seemed to be a daunting task: talking with her girlfriend.

‘Remember what Yang said: she’s your best friend,’ Weiss thought to herself in an effort to calm her creeping anxiety. ‘She’ll understand. She always does.’

“Hey, Weiss?”

The ex-heiress slightly jumped, not expecting her lover to speak. “Yes, Ruby?”

“Are… you alright?”

‘Oh gods. She already noticed, didn’t she?’

“What do you mean?”

“Well… I don’t know. You just seem… sad, and kinda withdrawn, is all. So, are you okay?”

‘Shit. She noticed.’

“I’m-” Weiss started to say before cutting herself off. She wasn’t fine, Ruby knew she wasn’t fine, and there was no point in delaying this conversation even further than she already had. It was time to bite the bullet.

“To be completely honest… not really,” she let out with a sigh, moving to lay down onto her side so she could look into her lover’s glimmering silver eyes. If she ever needed comfort, she could always look into those eyes, and for a singular moment, everything would be alright.

"I... I'm just..."

Ruby held eye contact, waiting patiently. Weiss swallowed hard and steeled her nerves before starting.

"You've been spending all your time with Penny... and get me wrong, I respect that, but…”

“But…?”

“It’s just that… I don’t…”

“You don’t what?”

“Am I good enough for you?” Weiss finally blurted out, causing Ruby’s eyes to widen in shock and fall silent for a moment, trying to process exactly what her lover had said.

“I know Penny is one of your best friends,” the ex-heiress continued, starting to become more animated. “You share the same interests, your combat styles are practically in sync, and the way you two interact make you both basically perfect for each other, and so I just don’t know if I’m-”

"Weiss Schnee,” Ruby interrupted gently. “Is this really what's been bothering you?"

“Yes… yes it has.”

“And is this why you haven’t been going on patrol with us? Because you’re afraid you’ll get in the way?”

“Yes…”

“You’re silly, you know that?”

“Am I?”

Ruby was about to reply with a “yes” before stopping herself. Weiss’ tone was small and low, and her expression was downcast. She was looking away now, avoiding her gaze, so Ruby gently put her hand on her girlfriend’s cheek with a smile, causing those bright sky-blue eyes to look back up at her.

“What’s got you thinking like this, princess?” she asked quietly. While she wanted to assuage her partner’s fears, she also wanted to understand why this was a fear at all.

Weiss sighed, seemingly resigned to explaining herself fully. She gently grasped the hand on her cheek and held it for a moment before she moved it to her chest as she rolled onto her back, letting out another sigh as she did so.

“My home. This place. My family,” she began. “My home is Atlas, and it’ll always be where I’m from, even though I have serious issues with it. This place, Atlas Academy, is somewhere I never wanted to go to train, lest my father mold me more into his image, and I didn’t want to follow my sister’s path. No, it was my job as heiress to uphold the Schnee family name and restore honor to it.”

Weiss gripped Ruby’s hand a bit tighter as she continued. “Things weren’t the best in the beginning of it all. I knew from the start that my father was a vile man. It’s not like I could say anything to his face, though. My mother grew absent, as she would rather drown herself in alcohol than deal with my father. All three of us were essentially left to fend for ourselves.”

She paused for a moment, the memories starting to become too much, before compelling herself to proceed. “Then my sister left us behind, giving up her title as heiress to join the military. My brother wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps, and he hated, and probably still hates me, for leaving him behind, just like Winter did...”

A single tear slipped down her cheek, and Ruby was quick to wipe it away as Weiss carried on. “Then Beacon happened, and I was whisked away from you and Blake and Yang... And the one time I said no to my father, he disowned me. Stripped me of my title and forbade me from leaving Atlas.”

Another tear threatened to fall, but Weiss shook her head as she turned back onto her side to face her lover properly, her hand still holding Ruby’s. “I apologize for going on about that so much, I think I’ve already told you most of this, but there’s a reason for this incredibly long spiel.”

With a squeeze of Ruby’s hand, Weiss mentally prepared herself as she got to the crux of it all. “All my life, I’ve always strived to be the best in everything that I do. It didn’t matter what it was; if I wasn’t doing absolutely perfectly in that task, I was failing, and failure has never been an option for me. Nowadays, I’ve learned that it’s okay to not be the best at everything... but the exception is you.”

Ruby tilted her head up in confusion, using her other arm to support the weight. “Huh? Me?”

“Yes, dolt,” her lover replied affectionately. “You. You deserve only the very best of what this world has to offer, and that includes potential partners. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very much delighted that you told me how you felt about me back then, and I will forever harbor those same feelings towards you."

Weiss stopped herself for a moment, her tone becoming reserved and sad once more. "With that being said... there are times that I don’t feel like I’m good enough for you, and unfortunately seeing you with Penny on a constant basis... it made me question some things... like my worth to you...”

She trailed off, trying to look at anything but Ruby’s understanding silver eyes that felt like they were boring into her soul. Of course, there was no use, and she inevitably was drawn back to them as she was always prone to do.

For Ruby’s part, she listened carefully to every word that Weiss spoke, easily connecting the dots before Weiss even got to her main point. However, she knew that her girlfriend needed to get all of that out. Gods know just how long that was weighing down on her. However, now she needed to reassure Weiss that she absolutely was good enough for her.

With that, Ruby took Weiss’ hand, holding it firmly but gently, and gazed into those wonderful ice-blue eyes.

“Let me start with this,” she began. “I’m. Not. Going. Anywhere. So please don’t ever worry about something like that happening. My heart… it’s for you. And only you. I trusted it with you back then and I trust it with you now. That will never change.”

Ruby paused, giving her partner a quick kiss on the cheek before continuing. “As for Penny, even if you and I weren’t together, she and I will only ever be friends. We’ve talked about it before, and she’s just really friendly, as you know. I don’t think she even understands the difference between romantic and platonic love. To her, everyone is just a friend until proven otherwise.”

The cloaked Huntress paused for a second, before letting go of Weiss hand so she could cup her lover’s cheek before finishing up.

“The last thing I gotta say is that I’m really sorry for making you feel like this. I didn’t know, but I’m glad you finally told me. So make no mistake, Weiss Schnee: you are enough. And I’m not talking about the perfect girl you want to become, not the heiress of the SDC, not even the bratty kid who agreed to be my partner all that time ago… I’m just talking about you. The broken, imperfect, beautiful you.”

Weiss simply stared at her partner for a few moments, and the lack of reaction started to concern Ruby, before she noticed tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Happy tears,” Weiss explained before her girlfriend got worried. “You’re the only one to ever reassure me like that… not even Winter has come close. So thank you… thank you so much… ”

With that, the ex-heiress proceeded to bury her head into Ruby’s shoulder, essentially tackling her back into the bed, and Ruby was all too happy to oblige. Gently, she started to brush her fingers through Weiss’ hair, letting her pour out all her emotions as Ruby let herself be the rock that her partner needed to stay afloat.

They laid like that for some time, both enjoying the other’s presence. Weiss’ sobs gradually quieted down to a slow yet steady breathing, and Ruby thought she fell asleep after crying her eyes out.

That was, until Weiss moved to give her a kiss before settling back onto her shoulder.

“I love you,” she said tiredly. “Never forget that. And yes, I’ll… make sure to go on more hunts with you and Penny…”

A yawn broke her sentence, causing Weiss to shake her head before nuzzling further into her girlfriend’s arms, content to fall asleep right then and there. Ruby grinned and made herself comfortable, always willing to enjoy the cuddles that her partner rarely gave.

“I love you too,” she replied, receiving a grunt in return. Smiling, she grabbed a blanket to wrap around them and a pillow to rest her head on before quickly falling asleep herself, having already been tired out from the patrol she went on earlier.

Her last coherent thought before drifting off was about how she and Weiss had finally found peace and contentment in each other’s arms. They finally had what they needed most.

When all was said and done, they would be fine after all.

Notes:

And that is all, folks! Thanks for reading! I hope you all enjoyed it.

Here's the prompt for the challenge: “Weiss misconstrues or is depressed at how much time Ruby spends with and how well she gets along with Penny. Ruby realizes and reassures her by the end of the fic (set in a sort of AU V7-8, or even 1-3 anytime you like)." It was given to me by Power_Taco themselves! Hope you like it, Taco!

I'll admit, it took me a long time to figure out this prompt, which is why this is being posted on the deadline date. But hey, it's finished! While it may have taken me a while, I did very much enjoy writing this. It was a nice change of pace from writing my usual style of angst, trauma, and someone being close to death lol. Who knows, maybe I'll write fluff in the future? We shall see... Oh, and much thanks and credit to Daniel Jade for helping me with parts of this fic. Without his help, this would not have been completed in time.

I'm not sure what I'm going to work on next. Probably another prompt that's been in the works for ages now. I've got a *lot* of WIPs right now, so I'm slowly working through all of them when I have time.

Anyways, that's all from me for now. If you liked it, or have any thoughts, please drop a comment below! I'd love to hear what you all think. Thanks again, and here's to a wonderful 2025!
