Work Text:
The sun rays danced through the blinds, coloring the room in light yellow tones. It was still early, and outside the birds sang softly, a sweet melody to Angelas ears. She was never one for early mornings, but sharing a bed with Fareeha had shifted her routine slightly. The other woman had apparently always been an early riser, and recently she’d taken up running in the morning. This usually left Angela alone in bed when she woke and today was no different.
She had fallen asleep in Fareehas arms, listening to the quiet of her slow heartbeat, feeling a familiar sense of warmth she wouldn’t dare take for granted. Now, it was missing, sleep in the corner of Angela’s eyes and cold by her side.
They’d gotten together during the war with Talon and Null Sector, having been reunited at the Overwatch base. What had been a simple collegial relationship had soon developed into a close friendship and later into a partnership. At first, they’d had a rocky start, not sure they wanted to label themselves as lovers in such a troublesome time. Each moment was precious to them, because the next might’ve never come. When the war was over and Overwatch had won, Fareeha was the first one to ask Angela to be her girlfriend. She had of course said yes, and it wasn’t long before they settled down together in Canada, close to Fareeha’s father. Canada was cold, but the climate reminded Angela of her childhood home in Switzerland, and so she felt at ease in the unfamiliar country. Although, Fareeha complained a lot, having grown up in the Egyptian heat. Angela smiled as she thought of Fareeha packed in her thick winter coat, cheeks flushed and brow furrowed.
She snuggled closer to Fareeha’s side of the bed, smelling the pillow. It was earthy and familiar and she felt herself grow drowsy. She’d never imagined herself falling so deeply for another person.
It can’t be more than 7 am right now, she thought and looked out the window. She pulled the covers over her shoulders and closed her eyes for a moment. She had no plans today, which was rare for her. Usually Fareeha liked to take her on dates on her days off, but today they had nothing planned. She wanted to surprise Fareeha with something romantic soon. She just wasn’t quite sure what. Atleast not yet. She dozed off, thinking of her partner. The bed no longer seemed as cold.
The last time they’d gone on a proper date was on Angela’s birthday. She had woken up to Fareeha’s soft kiss on her cheek and the smell of eggs and bacon wafting through the air in their small apartment. They’d eaten breakfast together and Fareeha had sent her to the living room while she took care of everything in the kitchen. Angela was not allowed in there for an hour, and when Fareeha had finally granted her permission, she surprised her with a picnic basket filled with delicious food. They’d spent a wonderful day at the park and when they came home they watched a movie, cuddled up on the couch. Angela hadn’t had such a nice birthday in a long time.
She woke up to a hand tucking a stray hair behind her ear. She opened her eyes slowly and looked up at the love of her life.
“Hey, sleepyhead.” Fareeha said and smiled kindly. Angela found her adorable.
“Hi.” Angela shifted in the bed. “What time is it?” She asked, rubbing sleep from her eyes.
“It’s 8. I brought you breakfast.” Fareeha held up a paper bag from a bakery a few blocks over.
“Did you run all the way there? You shouldn’t have.” She furrowed her brow and sat up in the bed.
“You know what they say; Healthy body, healthy mind.” Fareeha said and smiled that ever so charming confident smile.
“Mm.” Angela hummed. She took a good look at her girlfriend. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail. It had gotten slightly longer since the war ended, something which Angela took some time getting used to, always having seen her girlfriend with a perfect brown bob cut. She’d originally been drawn to Fareehas androgynous charm. The way her muscled arms flexed, her commanding voice and her confident posture. She was sure that that same androgyny was how she’d come to fall for a woman in the first place, always having thought of herself as exclusively preferring men. She still wasn’t sure she’d ever love a woman again if Fareeha were to one day leave her.
“Hey, are you alright?” Fareeha asked and reached out a hand to touch Angelas forearm.
“Sorry. I’m just thinking.”
Fareeha kissed her forehead. “About?”
Angela sat up straight, and rested her chin on Fareehas shoulder. She was warm. She must’ve just finished her run. “How beautiful you are.” She finally said.
She could tell Fareeha smiled. She kissed her shoulder, outside her shirt. Fareeha leaned back slightly, getting lost in the touch. Angela wrapped an arm around her waist and embraced her from behind, leaving a few kisses up her neck.
“Angie… I’m all sweaty.” Fareeha turned around so she was facing Angela now. This only served to fuel her desire further as she now had a full view of her beautiful girlfriend’s face.
“You know I love it when you call me that.” She pulled the covers away from her body and balanced herself so she could easily lean in and kiss Fareeha.
“Angie.” Fareeha repeated, driving Angela slightly crazy. She wasn’t about to let this slide.
“Place the bag on the table.” She commanded simply.
“Angela, seriously. I’m disgusting.” Fareeha protested.
Angela grabbed the bag of pastries from her hand, and placed it firmly on the table. then she leaned in and whispered in her ear: “You’re always beautiful to me.”
She remembered the first time she slept with Fareeha.
It was a spur of the moment thing. They were in Angelas chambers back at the Gibraltar base, where Overwatch based most of their operations. They’d just gotten off the rush of a succesful mission, besting some good for nothing talon agents in Great Britain. Angela had been the field medic assigned to the mission, and she’d been right by Fareehas side for most of it, admiring the way the woman fought. Fareeha had been squad leader and commandered with such ease that Angela felt drawn to her strong presence. When they returned to base Angela had suggested they celebrate a succesful collaboration just the two of them, and Fareeha had agreed happily, which Angela hadn’t allowed herself to think of as more than just her feeling the rush of a succesful mission. Almost as soon as Angela had locked the door, Fareeha had her pinned against the wall and her lips pressed on hers. Angela had been taken by surprise, but she’d kissed her back and soon their clothes were a pile on the floor and their bodies were entangled together. It wasn’t long before they made a routine of it, not daring to speak of what they were until things had settled down.
Angela was happy they’d had that conversation. After all, she couldn’t help but fall for Fareeha, and feel slightly selfish for the way she wanted her wholeheartedly.
Currently she had managed to get Fareeha pinned underneath her, kissing her slowly and tenderly. Fareehas hands were gently carressing her back and she felt her heartbeat strongly in her chest. Fareeha pulled her even closer so their bodies were pressed together.
“Angela…” She whispered.
Angela pulled away and looked in her deep brown eyes for a moment. She smiled and then she leant further down and began kissing the other woman’s neck, until settling down, simply laying herself on top of Fareeha, who breathed slowly and began drawing circles on her partner’s back.
They laid silently for a long while, fingers intertwined, simply listening to the sounds of each other’s breathing and enjoying the quiet sunday morning slowly turning into noon. When they finally interupted the silence it was to whisper promises of “I love you” and “I’ll make you coffee.” Laying there just the two of them, it felt like they had all the time in the world.
