“Basil, can you please tell Kel to take this game seriously?!”
“I am taking this seriously, Aubrey!”
Basil worriedly looked up from his deck of uno cards. The game had started off fine but things quickly got heated with Aubrey and kel constantly adding +2’s to each other’s deck.
He sighed and laid his head back on the couch, letting his mind wander as the two’s bickering became background noise.
He thought of the new kid in his class.Short black hair, dark brown eyes, glistening with mischief. He’d introduced himself in front of the class, but Basil couldn’t remember what his name was.All he could remember was that the kid looked pretty shy. Basil knew better than to judge a book by its cover, though.
“Basil!” Kel yelled, snapping him out of his thoughts.
“Uh..yeah?”
“Are you listening? Two kids moved into the house next door! My mom even held a welcome party for them yesterday!” Kel beamed, waving his hands in the air as he spoke.
“And– and! They both go to our school now!”
Aubrey grinned, her eyes sparkled like they always did when she was excited.
“Oh yeah! I remember now! I became friends with the new girl- Mari! She’s so,so sweet! She even made me a bracelet during lunch!” Aubrey added, extending her left arm to show off her pink rubber band bracelet.
Basil perked up at that. His eyes widened in realisation and he leaned forward, drumming his finger on the table.
“Mari? As in Mari Yume?”
“Yeah!” Kel and Aubrey exclaimed.
“And her brother is…?”
“Sunny Yume.” Kel replied.
Basil snapped his fingers, “So that’s his name! He’s in my class.”
Kel pouted. “No way! That’s not fair, I wanted to be his first friend in town..”
Basil cocked his head to the side, a small smile forming on his face
“I'm not friends with him, though.”
“You aren’t?! Thank god- ow!”
Aubrey elbowed Kel in the stomach, shooting him a warning glare, which made Basil chuckle.
“Oh wait- I have an idea!” Aubrey chimed, her eyes sparkling again.
Both of the boys looked at her in anticipation.
“What if the three of us tried befriending him? I think he’s the most distant compared to his sister, she gets along with everyone else and he’s always brooding in a corner. Whoever becomes his friend first within this week wins a prize..the prize being..that the losers have to do what the winner wants for a week! We’ll call it Operation Solar system!”
Aubrey huffed in contentment and crossed her arms, a smug smile forming on her face.
Basil and Kel glanced at each other, then Aubrey.
Kel slammed his hands on the table.
“Oh it’s on! Who wouldn’t wanna be friends with an amazing guy like me anyway? I’m sure to win.”
“Don’t be so full of yourself, kel! I managed to be friends with his sister, so there's a bigger chance of him wanting to open up to me first!”
Basil frowned and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Isn’t this..stalking?” He murmured, into his hand. He knew trying to stop those two would be hopeless. Knocking some sense into them while they were bickering was like talking to a brick wall.
Sunny did seem like an interesting guy though.
Maybe he could indulge in this game for a little while.
