Maturity

Summary:

Drabble in which the Tegan tells how she, the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, at a Long Island Bar Mitzvah, reflect on adulthood and maturity, and, to the Doctor's annoyance, those elements with regard to the Doctor.

Work Text:

The Doctor took us to a Bar Mitzvah on Long Island. "It's a coming-of-age ritual."

I said "Mazel tov!" to the Bar Mitzvah boy (I have Jewish friends in Brisbane).

Nyssa was baffled. "He's a man now?"

"Yes, at thirteen."

I added, "But he can't drive, drink, vote, consent to sex, acquire credit or live on his own. He's still considered a child."

The Doctor explained, "The human brain takes twenty-five years to mature."

"On Traken, the pre-frontal cortex is fully formed at thirteen. Was, I mean."

"Nyssa, you're the maturest person here."

The Doctor looked put out. How immature!
