Postregeneration Paradox

Summary:

Drabble in which Nyssa is curious about the individual identities of various Doctorly regenerations. Nyssa thinks he's pretty different now. The Fifth Doctor maintains he hasn't changed.

Work Text:

"It's not just your face, Doctor, is it?"

"What?" I was tinkering with the dimensional stabilizer but I'd heard Nyssa's question. I just wasn't sure how to answer.

"When you regenerate, it's not just your physical being. You're a whole new person, right?"

"Nonsense," I said, looking at her to see if she believed me. "I'm always me." I wasn't exactly lying….

"But you're a different you."

"Different, but the same."

"Doctor, you're not making any sense."

"You see? Did I seem to be making sense when you met me?"

"Well, no…."

"There you go! I haven't changed a bit."
