Something lurks in the shadows of the fields, by now Valentino is sure of that. He's been for quite a while, to be honest, feeling the presence of something always skirting on the edge of his conscience, like a thought too quick to catch, a passing meteor shower. And it's not just that, the bone-chilling sensation of being watched all the time, it's something infinitely worse: knowing for certain that you are. Eyes burning a hole in your back until you quickly turn in a half pirouette and the – creature, your monstrous stalker living in the shadows, recoils, flinching away, not showing. Always a little too fast for human eyes, so good at hiding.
The thought brings half a smile to his face, a lopsided thing curled around the cigarette that has long stopped burning, the long cinder cone hanging loosely from the burnt paper, defying gravity itself.
