Tick. Tick. Tick. The soft sound of the clock ticking reached Giyuu’s ears first. Thump. Thump. Thump. Kyoujuro’s heartbeat followed the sound. Giyuu sighed, head laying on Kyoujuro’s warm chest. His ear was pressed up against his skin, the beat of his heart echoing through Giyuu. An arm lightly draped around his waist, instinctively tugging him closer. Soft flame-coloured hair tickled his face, as Kyoujuro’s soft breaths filled the calm morning silence. Giyuu opened his eyes, bleary with sleep, greeted with the sight of his love beside him.
His gaze traced Kyoujuro’s face, from slightly parted lips to the bridge of freckles across his nose, from his resting eyelids to unique eyebrows that Giyuu had grown quite fond of. Sunlight trickled through their curtains, falling in shards across his boyfriend’s face. It illuminated his skin, Giyuu’s eyes noticing every pore and mark. One hand, that rested on Kyoujuro’s chest, gently moved downwards. Slight hair brushed Giyuu’s fingertips, as he trailed over his abdomen, inevitably reaching the scar. Giyuu’s eyes flickered down, his breath hitching at the sight. The scar was wide, stretching across Kyoujuro’s stomach. As his fingers stroked over the ridges and skin, Kyoujuro hummed softly, body shuffling as he was pulled out of his sleep. His eyes opened; swirls of orange nestled in light yellow meet pools of deep blue.
Kyoujuro smiled softly, the hand on Giyuu’s waist tracing small circles onto his skin. “Good morning, love.” He said softly, voice raspy with sleep. Giyuu shuddered softly, the baritone of his voice sending goosebumps across his skin. “Morning.” He mumbles, eyes flicking from Kyoujuro’s to where his hand rested on his scar. His eyes followed, a soft sign escaping him as he reached out a hand for Giyuu’s. Their fingers intertwined, cold against warmth. “What’s on your mind so early in the morning, hmm?” Kyoujuro whispered softly, breath brushing against Giyuu’s ear. The hand on his waist came up to his hair, softly tucking a strand behind his ear.
“Nothing.” Giyuu says, shuffling closer into Kyoujuro’s warmth. He chuckled softly, pulling Giyuu tighter to him. “You sure?” He asked. Giyuu hummed, tapping his fingers on Kyoujuro’s skin. He paused for a while, gathering his scattered mind before speaking up. “Your heartbeat is my favorite thing to hear.” He whispered, trying to convey how he felt. As flashbacks of the aftermath of Kyoujuro’s fight with Akaza flooded his mind, he couldn’t help but go down a path he thought he’d abandoned. He wasn’t sure how to convey what he was feeling; how he was grateful to all the gods above, everyone he’d ever prayed to, and even fate itself for letting him have Kyoujuro by his side. And yet, how he felt as if it could be snatched away any moment, the gods abandoning him and fate showing it’s true colors.
Kyoujuro hummed, pressing a soft kiss into the top of Giyuu’s head, his black hair tickling Kyoujuro’s nose. They laid in bed like that for a while, entangled in each other’s arms, each breath mingling. The soft hum of the wind could be heard from outside, as the sun rose a bit higher. Giyuu tilted his face up slightly, looking at Kyoujuro right as he looked down. Their eyes met again, and Kyoujuro let out a small smile. Not those grins he had on all the time, the ones he gave away to everyone like they all deserved it. Teeth out, eyes wide, a laugh escaping from his chest.
No, this smile was for Giyuu alone. It was their secret, only theirs. A soft uplifting of his lips, turned at one corner. A slight dimple, which Giyuu reached out with his thumb to trace. Kyoujuro shifted his face slightly, kissing his thumb. He grabbed the back of his hand, calloused fingers enveloping Giyuu’s, bringing his palm to his lips and pressing soft kisses into it.
Giyuu made a noise in his throat, a slight blush splotching across his cheeks. Even after being together for almost a year, he was still not used to the amount of affection he got from Kyoujuro. Gentle kisses on his forehead, a hand squeezing his, wrapping around his waist. Kyoujuro smiled again, and Giyuu leaned in, brushing his lips against Kyoujuro’s. He could feel his breath hitch, before their lips connected- soft, gentle. Warm; like Kyoujuro’s body, his skin, his smile, his heart. As their lips moved against eachother, his thoughts muddling and body awakening, only one thing ran through his mind- he’d lived through everything, just to have this moment. And he deserved it, and even if he didn’t- he’d take it anyways. Selfishness was okay when it came to his love.
