Work Text:

The soft sheets are inviting and warm, but they pale in comparison with her embrace. Dorcas has to force herself to peel away, reluctant, but she must.

“Where are you going?” She asks, rubbing her eyes. Her blonde fringe is sticking up, and she looks beautifully soft, a painting of love and comfort and Dorcas dreads having to get up, as much as she prides herself on punctuality.

“I have to work, darling,” she leans in to kiss Marlene’s forehead, “Not everyone has the crazy schedule of quidditch players, you know?”

Marlene reaches for her, pulling her down for a languid kiss, full of sleepy delight. She runs her fingers down Dorcas’ shoulders, feeling the skin, tracing a mark left by herself the night before.

“Stay.”

“I can’t, my love.”

Marlene groans dramatically, “Oh, abandonment, you painful beast!!”

Dorcas rolls her eyes and flicks her forehead playfully, “I’ll be back soon enough.”

Marlene turns on her side to look at her, “Promise?”

She nods, “Promise. And we'll go to dinner at that restaurant you like, yeah?”

“Oh, hell yes. I’m never saying no to that pasta.”

Dorcas chuckles and kisses her forehead again, “Sleep, now. It’s your day off. Enjoy it.”

Marlene pouts but nods. “I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you more.” She promises.

“Not possible.” Comes the answer she’s grown to expect. It makes her heart fill with adoration, and she can’t resist kissing her again and again… a few minutes won’t hurt.

When they pull apart, she hums, drunk on Marlene, just how she’s always been ever since they were teenagers, “I’ll see you tonight. We’ll go to the restaurant together, yeah?”

“Sure, that’s good,” Marlene agrees easily, falling back on the mattress.

Once inside the closet, getting ready for work, Dorcas can’t keep herself from checking again if the little box in her sock drawer is still there. She takes it, running a thumb over the velvety finish, and opens it.

Inside, the ring gleams with magic, the purple stone intricately carved into a white gold band. It’s enchanted so when Marlene puts it on, a matching one will show up on Dorcas’ finger.

She puts it away. She can’t wait for dinner.
