Love at First Sight - Coffee Shop AU

Summary:

"There ain't no package without them peepers"

or;

Sophie Foster and Keefe Sencen meet in a coffee shop, and Sophie finds herself unable to resist the captivating power of his ice blue eyes.

Notes:

This is satire and should not be taken seriously. I love this series, but I also occasionally find it hilarious how often eyes and eye color are mentioned throughout. This fic aims to take that idea to the extreme. Enjoy!

Work Text:

When the most beautiful pair of eyes walked into Jolie’s Cafe, Sophie couldn’t help but take notice.

They were a sparkling, almost piercing blue, reminding her of glaciers, glittering and mysterious. Sophie didn’t think she’d ever seen such mesmerizing eyes. She wanted to dive into them like they were frozen pools, swim laps through them until she forgot all her worries. Eyes like that didn’t belong in coffee shops — really, they should be the star exhibit in a museum, to be admired by all who saw them.

She was snapped out of her reverie with a jolt by the sound of someone clearing their throat. Her vision cleared, and her heart seemed to skip a beat, horror seizing her. It was him. The owner of the fabulous frosty orbs.

The man smirked, standing over her at her seat in a quiet corner of the cafe. “Can I help you?”

Now why on earth would he be asking that? Sophie hadn’t been staring, had she? He did look a tad concerned, and she’d been too enthralled to really pay attention, so she supposed it was possible. Well, all the better, now she got a close-up view of those pretty peepers.

“Oh, um- sorry, I’m just not used to seeing new people here,” she stammered, searching desperately for something to say. “Are you new to the area?”

Looking unimpressed, the man raised an eyebrow. “You’re not used to seeing new people in a coffee shop?”

Wow, what an ignorant thing to say. Of course she was used to seeing new people here, she just never cared enough to notice. But those eyes…so beautiful and shimmery…what had she been saying? Ah yes, she was lying through her teeth to get him to talk to her.

“Nope, just you.” Sophie smiled big, her voice soft and flirty. If that didn’t get him, she didn’t know what would. All she knew was she would do anything for more time to gaze into the depths of his optical organs.

“Well, you caught me,” he drawled, grinning back. It had worked, he was staying! And still talking, apparently. She kind of wished he would just be quiet and let her look deep into those parallel oceans…“It’s my first time. What about you? I’m guessing you’re here pretty often?”

Now what? Perhaps a funny anecdote? “Well, all the baristas know me by name…”

“Ah, a regular.” He nodded; then, to her delight, he pulled up a chair and sat down across from her. “Perfect. Tell me, what would you recommend I order?”

Think Sophie, think! It seemed to be impossible to look away from his arctic gaze, to even think of anything but that shimmering blue. Flustered, she blurted out, “What about a blueberry frappuccino?”

The man leaned forward, appearing intrigued. “And why do you say that?”

Sophie blushed furiously, wishing the floor would open up beneath her and swallow her whole. Oh, why had she said anything? And how was she expected to come up with a coherent response when he was looking at her in a way that made her insides feel like they were about to float away?

“Oh, I just think it would match your ey- your vibes, you know?” She squeaked.

He considered that, giving Sophie a few blissful seconds in which all she had to do was study the polar hue that seemed to have frozen her brain. She was fairly convinced that they were the most captivating pair of eyes to ever exist. Utterly powerless to resist their beauty, she was forced to simply stare into them for all eternity. She found that she wasn’t particularly upset about that fate.

When he finally spoke, it was with a teasing lilt. “Well, I’ll tell you what. I’ll get that blueberry drink if you can tell me what that lady over there is going to order based on her ‘vibe.’” He pointed to a petite woman with green eyes, pink lips, and bouncy blonde hair.

Ooh, a challenge. But the joke was on him; this was a game Sophie loved to play with her best friends whenever they went out together, so she knew she had this in the bag. And if she impressed him, maybe he’d come back to sit with her after he got his drink (plus, she’d get more time to contemplate his splendiferous stare.)

“Something fruity for sure,” she studied the woman, watching as she laughed at something the barista said, energy and optimism practically radiating off of her. “Maybe…strawberry? Yeah, she’ll get a strawberry lemonade.”

“You sure about that?” His eyes seemed to twinkle with mischief, distracting her yet again. They really seemed to have minds of their own, completely separate from the rest of his body. Unfortunately, it seemed that all of him expected a response.

“Well,” she nodded toward the woman, doing her best to distract him from her blatant ogling. “I guess we’ll see, won’t we?”

He began tapping a light drum roll on the table, a smirtle dancing on his lips, and Sophie giggled and rolled her eyes. Quickly, of course; she could hardly stand to look away from his for very long. At this point, it was practically painful how absolutely enrapturing they were.

Her thoughts were interrupted once more by the woman, who was finally placing her order. “A small raspberry lemonade, please.”

A look of surprise crossed the man’s face. “Okay, I’m impressed.” He reached a hand up for a high five, which Sophie gladly returned, maintaining eye contact all the while. She smiled smugly.

“As you should be.”

There was a silence for a moment as they studied each other. Sophie, of course, kept her focus pinned on his gorgeous globes. They were so vibrant and crystalline, like twin aquamarines. She wished she could take them out and wear them around her neck, never again to live without his breathtaking eyes in her life.

He looked down to check his watch, breaking the spell. “Sorry, I’m in a bit of a rush,” he sighed, regret apparent on his face. “Maybe I’ll see you here again sometime?”

A pang of deep sadness struck her heart at the thought of going even a single hour without seeing his lovely lookers, and she nodded emphatically. “I certainly hope so.” She waved, watching as he went to order his iced drink. What a nice man he had turned out to be. And truly amazing eyes, which more than completed the package. She really did hope he would come back.

She would keep an eye out.
