Chapter Text
Under the New Mexico heat, the sun scorching the skin off of him, Heavy gave one last look at the dead man in front of him. Withering into nothing but an old, wrinkly corpse. A far cry to the previous super-strengthed giant. A dead man who was too much of a puny coward to face his wrath and had to use dirty tricks. “We’re team fortress, and you’re dead.”
He felt a tap on his shoulder, “Excuse me freund,” it was Medic. He made way for the doctor. The man who was dead on the gravel and dirt floor moments before, the look of those hauntingly glassy eyes then a faint reminder that he failed him.
“Two on one, that sound fair to you? You want a fair fight, big man? Now you got one.”
He remembered the rage of seeing his friend fall to the floor, two gunshots rang out as he saw the lifeless body of his once alive companion. Lying flat on the rubble with his face turned to the side. Jaw slack as the life faded out of his eyes, that glint of life in them disappearing and becaming soulless empty husks of the man before.
“You, killed, doctor!”
The anguish he hadn’t felt since he was a little boy, in the biting cold of the Siberian winter, his legs on merciless thick snow, painted with crimson, and papa- He snapped himself out of his trance. Gazing at his doctor, two fresh bullet wounds on the side of his chest, arms holding a…
monkey?
Heavy didn’t know what to focus on, the fact that his friend was still actively bleeding out, or the literal mammal in his arms. He chose the former. “Doctor! You are bleeding out!” He pointed to the two bullet holes on his uniform. “Ach, not to worry mein freund, I have it under control.” Heavy was a little hesitant, but trusted Medic. Now with that out of the way…
“Doctor, why do you have monkey?” He watched as his friend went up to the corpse, kneeled down and grabbed it’s bandana, “Well, first off, it’s not a monkey, it’s a baboon.” The doctor fumbled with the fabric for a bit until he was able to wrap it around the animal. “Ah also, about that baboon pen…” He almost looked a little sheepish, putting on his best “get-out-of-trouble” smile. Heavy’s jaw might’ve dropped just then. “Was not bluff…?” He asked, as if he didn’t already know the answer. “Aheh, well…it was, but that was because I didn’t have the pen at hand.” He held the baboon in one of his hand and scratched the back of his neck with the other. “Doctor…” Heavy pinched between his eyes, shaking his head. “Doctor, where do we even find place for your baby- baboon.”
”Simple, really. We will raise it! I can’t just leave it just in some zoo!” Боже, if there was a cliff somewhere he’d be happy to throw himself off it. “You’ll help me, ja?” The doctor looked at him so nicely and batted those strikingly blue eyes at him, Heavy sighed, that man was too good at getting his way. “Да, Да. Will help.” Medic’s eyes lit up and he could almost see the sparkle in them. Grin widening. “Perfect! Heh, ach could you hold the baboon for a bit, I need to get something.” The doctor almost shoved the monkey to him, and he was off.
The baboon looked at Heavy, nestling itself in his arms, getting comfortable. It was kind of cute, he had to admit.
What did he get himself into?
