Work Text:
It had been a week or so since Skizz saved Impulse from his cage.
in that short amount of time, Skizz had bought Impulse materials for good clothing and made him a bed out of an old matchbox stuffed with the softest fabric Skizz owned.
The borrower’s every need had been looked after from safety right down to comfort and it was hard to believe that only a week ago Impulse believed he was going to rot in that stupid cage.
So why then was it impossible to sleep?
Skizz had made sure Impulse was warm, and close by, letting the borrower sleep on the side table next to his own bed at Impulse’s request.
But there was a deep rooted restlessness that he just couldn’t shake
It had been keeping him awake for a couple of nights now, the only time he had really been able to sleep was the first few nights out of pure exhaustion!
…
but since then…
…
Impulse had been lying to Skizz… told him he was alright when the human asked how his sleep was.
Honestly he didn’t think he was fooling his new found friend.
But Skizz never pushed that hard with his questions.
Part of Impulse’s brain reasoned that being out in the open with a human so close by was the reason why he couldn’t sleep.
But the other part of him knew that wasn’t the case.
Skizz was a breath of fresh air, he was safety, and Impulse didn’t want to stray too far from his the human.
That still left him restless and without answers.
To Impulse’s left there was shuffling and a long sleepy sigh. When he looked over, he saw that it was just Skizz shifting around to get a little more comfortable.
But the Human was dead asleep.
Impulse couldn’t help but feel a little bit jealous…
Then he got an idea…
Quietly slinking out of his bed, Impulse was quick to cross the distance between himself and his Human friend.
He wasn’t exactly sure what his plan was, the only thought going through his mind was how content he was when Skizz held him.
And perhaps it was selfish,
But he was tired and not thinking clearly enough to fully consider the risks.
Like being crushed by Skizz’s unconscious form.
…
…
…
Maybe he should let the Human know he was there first.
…
Yeah…
That would help…
So with that Impulse clambered up Skizz’s arm up towards his ear
“Skizz, hey Skizz?” He whispered, trying not to startled the Human.
But after a long moment with no reply, Impulse tried again.
“Skizz? I just need to ask something quick.”
“Mm?” The Human stirred underneath him and Impulse struggle to keep his balance.
“Impy?”
The borrower ended up kneeling to keep from falling “yeah, it’s me… I’m sorry I woke you up..”
Skizz’s brow scrunched up in confusion “you okay Impy Dimpy?”
“Yeah I’m…
…
no… not really… I can’t sleep… like my body has to much energy but my mind is exhausted..”
“Didja have any coffee?”
“No, how could I even get any coffee? You’re the one who makes it for me.”
“I dunno dude, m’not super awake right now.”
“Sorry.”
“Shh- Shh- Shh- no sorrys… just… give me a second.”
Slowly but surely Skizz blinked his bright blue eyes open.
“Where are ya dude?”
“By your ear… I didn’t want to be yelling…”
“M’Kay… can I grab ya from there?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.”
Skizz hummed, as he reached up his hand and loosely wrapped his hand around the borrower.
Impulse didn’t mind, only because it was Skizz.
The Human might as well have been another member of Impulse’s family… or well… the only other member of his family…
….
Nevermind that…
..
Skizz brought his hand down to just in front of his face where he opened his grasp, leaving the borrower sitting on his flattened palm.
“How are ya feeling dude?”
Impulse almost responded with the canned ‘I’m fine’
But he thought better of it.
“I dunno… I haven’t been sleeping good and I’m sick of it… I… I’m tired… and… I thought.. that maybe if I could stay with you it might make it better…?”
“Why would that make it better?” Skizz was trying to stifle a yawn as he spoke and Impulse felt the guilt of waking up his friend.
“Well I-…. I just thought it might… I should have thought it through more before waking you… sorry…”
“Hey, hey. No need for sorry dude, I’m glad you woke me up… I’m just trying to think how I can help.”
“I might have a way?…” Impulse’s voice wavered as he stood once more.
“What is it Buddeh?”
Warm and sollum memories resurfaced to the front of Impulse’s mind.
“There was a thing I did with my family… every once and awhile… I didn’t always love it but… it was basically a big cuddle pile? It helped everyone stay warm during colder seasons… but… well someone would always end up laying half across me,” a giggle escaped Impulse’s lips but it betrayed his sadness. “I guess I miss that…”
Skizz softly hummed, lifting his thumb to gently wipe away a stray tear that the borrower didn’t even realize was there.
“Whatever you need from me Impy, I’m here…”
Impulse tried to smile, tilting his head upwards to his Human, “you think you can shrink down to a borrower size?”
A low chuckle rumbled in Skizz’s throat “I’ll get right on that dude, because that would be awesome!”
Impulse hummed before stepping off the hand, “yeah it would…but… in the mean while… could you…?” The borrower knelt down next to his friend’s hand not bothering to finish his sentence as did his best to pull the hand towards him.
Of course in no world would Impulse be able to move Skizz’s hand but he was tired.. and didn’t know how else to explain what he wanted.
Thankfully Skizz caught on after a few moments of the borrower tugging on his palm.
Swiftly moving he moved his hand so it would drape over Impulse like a blanket, slowly he let the weight settle against Impulse’s chest.
“That okay Buddeh? Is it too much?”
“No, it’s good…” now it was Impulse’s turn to stifle a yawn, “Thanks Skizzle…”
“Of course Impy Dimpy, let me know if you need anything else.”
Impulse hummed his reply, the heaviness of his own eye lids becoming more and more apparent.
After a short while, Impulse was finally able to sleep.
