But when Lottie’s eyes dipped down to eye her stomach, Nat tensed. She couldn’t know, right? Her hopes were immediately dashed when Lottie’s hands reached out to touch her belly. Nat slapped her hands away as soon as she saw their path, but it was too late, the damage was done. She was only grateful that everyone else was still asleep so that they wouldn’t be awake to witness it.
Nat could feel Travis’ concerned gaze on the side of her face, but she couldn’t look anywhere but at Lottie. Not when her eyes had darkened exponentially and she was looking at Nat like she had during the first winter, during her rule. With a reverence that both made her uncomfortable but also, shamefully, filled her with pride.
“The Wilderness…oh, Nat. You’ve saved us all. The Wilderness always did like you the best,” Lottie whispered earnestly, kneeling in front of Nat and grabbing her hands.
