Eternal

Summary:

At last, I see, with clarity,
Eternity is not the key.
True happiness, I now believe,
Lies in small, fleeting, fulfilling things.

A short poem I enjoyed, so I translated it to English

Work Text:

“How could a world, blind in its purity,

Ever be the measure of beauty?

To me, the colorless moon above

Speaks only of sorrow, devoid of love.

They do not laugh, nor cry, nor fear.

They judge with ignorance, severe,

Those who dwell beneath their gaze—

Such arrogance leaves me amazed.

Yet might the flawed and mortal kind,

In their imperfect, earthly bind,

Have something more to teach to me

About life’s fleeting mystery?

To descend below, I must embrace

Impurity and leave no trace

Of lunar nature’s calm embrace.

For I’ve chosen to live unseen.

Birds, insects, creatures of the land,

Each soul unique, their value grand.

To cherish them with tender care

Brings warmth beyond compare.

As I grew, like bamboo’s steady rise,

I came to know men’s truths and lies—

Their struggles, fears, and fragile ways,

Shaping me through passing days.

Like a flower in full bloom,

I grow, and take in all this room,

Absorbing all it had to share,

Until danger crept into the air.

It didn’t take long to see

How harmful my presence could be

Whispers of beauty spread like fire,

And peace unraveled in desire.

The rumors reached five noble ears—

Men driven by vanity’s gears,

Seeking to claim me as their prize,

With empty hearts and hollow cries.

My heart would never be bestowed

To those who in their hearts had sowed

Such selfishness, unearned affection—

Five impossible requests for their reflection.

My five selfish pleas—how cruel they seemed—

Little by little, they were redeemed—

Clans of power crumbled in shame,

While others perished in my name.

This wasn’t what I wished for, no,

As chaos took its deadly flow.

I questioned whether I was wrong,

To come to Earth, where I don’t belong.

How foolish to believe, I see,

That eternity could set me free.

Perhaps this world was not my place,

And love, not something I could embrace.

That’s what I believed until she came,

With eyes of crimson, filled with flame,

Seeking vengeance for one lost,

Driven by regret, no matter the cost.

Shrouded in fire, fierce and bright,

A phoenix soaring through the night

Yet in her rage, I saw the scars

Of battles fought beneath the stars.

Her fury hid a fragile soul,

Weighed down by pain beyond control,

Haunted by lives she’d torn apart,

Longing to mend her broken heart.

“You understand me,” her gaze revealed.

Together, our fates became sealed.

We found in each other the strength to stand,

No longer fearing an empty hand.

Few can grasp what fuels our fight,

But in her, I find my light.

In her, I have a place to stay—

A home to which I’ll return each day.

At last, I see, with clarity,

Eternity is not the key.

True happiness, I now believe,

Lies in small, fleeting, fulfilling things.”

Notes:

Thank you for reading! If you enjoyed, make sure to go to the original work and tell the author!

I did my best to keep the poem’s original meaning while also making it rhyme, which was a bit tricky. Overall I think the translation came out pretty good!
