A Moment of Forever

Summary:

Elijah will always be there for Elena

Work Text:

The Salvatore mansion was quiet, the kind of stillness that came only in the early hours of the morning. Moonlight streamed through the large windows, casting soft silver beams across the room. Elena sat by the fireplace, staring into the flickering flames, a glass of wine cradled in her hands. She was supposed to be relaxing, but her mind wouldn’t stop replaying the events of the day.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

The smooth, cultured voice startled her, though it shouldn’t have. She turned to find Elijah standing in the doorway, his dark suit immaculate as always, his presence commanding but never overwhelming.

“You have a habit of sneaking up on people,” she said, offering a small smile.

“My apologies,” he said, stepping further into the room. “Old habits die hard.”

He moved toward her, his every step measured and deliberate, like a predator who had learned patience over centuries. Elijah always carried himself with an air of calm control, but tonight, there was something softer in his expression.

“You seemed lost in thought,” he observed, taking a seat across from her. “Care to share?”

Elena hesitated, swirling the wine in her glass. “It’s just… everything feels so heavy lately. The Originals, the Salvatores, Klaus’s endless schemes—it’s like I can’t catch my breath.”

Elijah nodded, his gaze steady and understanding. “The weight of such burdens is not easily borne, even by the strongest among us. And you, Elena, are undeniably strong.”

She scoffed lightly, setting her glass down on the side table. “I don’t feel strong. I feel… tired. Like I’m caught in this endless cycle of fighting and losing and fighting again.”

Elijah leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. “Strength is not the absence of weariness, but the choice to continue despite it. You are remarkable in that way.”

His words, spoken with such quiet conviction, sent a shiver through her. Elijah had a way of seeing her—not just the girl trapped in supernatural chaos, but the person beneath it all.

“Why are you always so kind to me?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Elijah’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Because you remind me of the best parts of humanity. Your compassion, your resilience… they are rare qualities, and they deserve to be cherished.”

Her breath caught at the intensity of his gaze, the way it seemed to pierce through her defenses and lay her soul bare.

“Elijah…”

He rose then, crossing the space between them in a single, graceful motion. When he stood before her, he hesitated, as if giving her a chance to stop him. But she didn’t.

Slowly, he reached out, his hand brushing against her cheek. His touch was cool, but it sent warmth flooding through her veins.

“You deserve more than this life has given you,” he said softly, his voice tinged with something like reverence. “More than pain, more than loss. And if I could give you even a fraction of the peace you deserve…”

He trailed off, his thumb gently tracing the curve of her jaw. Elena felt her heart pounding, her thoughts scattering like leaves in the wind.

“You already do,” she whispered, her words carrying a truth she hadn’t fully realized until now.

Elijah’s eyes darkened, the restraint he always held so carefully beginning to waver. Slowly, achingly slowly, he leaned in.

When their lips met, it was like the world fell away. There was no war, no enemies, no impossible choices—just the two of them, bound together in a moment that felt infinite. His kiss was as deliberate as everything else about him, a mix of tenderness and unspoken promises.

When they finally pulled apart, Elijah rested his forehead against hers, his breath mingling with hers in the quiet space between them.

“No matter what happens,” he murmured, “you will always have me, Elena. Always.”

She closed her eyes, letting the weight of his words settle over her. For the first time in what felt like forever, she believed them.

And in that moment, for the first time in a long time, she felt like she could breathe.
