Chapter Text
Avery sighed as he stepped off the bus, “Yo! Idiots! Get out here!”
Jaiden huffed and quickly followed, “You’re still serious about this whole farm thing?”
Mel dusted off himself as he tugged his bag off the bus, “I’m with Jaiden on this one, Avery. Did we have to move all the way out here? We were comfortable working at Joja.”
Avery rolled his eyes, “Maybe you were but I wasn’t.”
Someone with a baseball cap, a t-shirt, and shorts walked to the trio, “Hey, welcome to the valley. I’m Charlotte, who are you three?”
Avery cleared his throat, “I’m Avery, the one with the hoodie is Jaiden and the one with blue nail polish is Mel.”
Charlotte nodded, “Ah, oh are you three Harmony’s grandkids?”
All three winced and Mel spoke up, “Yeah…he uh…passed a few years ago.”
Charlotte sighed, “yeah, I heard. Well, anyway, you three probably wanna get to the farmhouse, huh? Must be tired after that long trip. Follow me. It’s just to the left of here.”
As they went to the house, Jaiden frowned, “it’s so…quaint.”
Mel elbowed Jaiden’s side, “Hey, this is where mom grew up, be nice.”
Jaiden rolled their eyes, “Fine, fine.”
Charlotte knocked on the door, “Yo, Rose! Can I bring ‘em in or no?”
The person named ‘Rose’ walked out of the house, “Hi, I’m Rose, I’m the mayor. I see you met Charlotte. Don’t worry, he’s always like this.” Rose went to noogie Charlotte who just whipped around and glared at him. Rose pretended to pout, “Aww, you’re no fun, Char. Anyway, I’ll take it from here. See ya, Char!” Avery, Mel, and Jaiden followed Rose into the house. Rose was beaming, “It’s rare someone new comes to the valley. We’re all very excited you’re here. Well, I’ll leave you three to get settled. Come see me in the town hall if you need anything, oh and here’s a small gift.”
Avery stopped Rose, “Why is the grass outside blue?”
Rose blinked and smiled, “Ah, that’s special grass. It makes your animals happier. Speaking of, the box is full of hay. You might want to feed your little chicky in the morning. She’s out in her coop right now, you should go introduce yourselves. Bye!”
Mel shook his head and started rolling out his sleeping bag, “I’m going to sleep, today’s been a lot.”
Avery nodded, “Agreed. Jay, where’re you sleeping?”
Jaiden shrugged, “I’ll sleep under the table. I don’t care. Still, I thought grandpa said there was enough room for all of us. I guess not.” Avery chose a spot next to the fireplace, Mel was next to the door, and Jaiden was, as they said, under the table. Mel fell asleep with a knife in his hand for safety.
During the night, Jaiden woke up.
He pried the knife from Mel’s hands and snuck outside, “Hello?”
He heard what sounded like knocking, or so he thought. He saw the coop door open and panicked. He ran to the coop and found the baby chick inside unharmed. He sighed in relief. He shut the door and went back to the house. He heard a faint meow.
He blinked and turned, “Aww, you’re just a sweet little kitty cat, aren’t you? Aww, I’m gonna call you Midnight. Alright Midnight, you can come inside with me.”
The trio, plus Midnight, were awakened by a sharp knock on the door. Jaiden groaned and fumbled to find his glasses. Mel opened the door, “Hello?”
A person with thick curls tied into a ponytail was on the other side, “Hi, I’m your neighbor, Forest. I was just wondering, one of my foster cats got out last night. She’s not here, is she?”
Mel glanced at Midnight then looked back at Forest, “Is that her?”
Jaiden was petting the cat gently, “She came over last night, tried to break into the coop. Here.”
Forest shook his head, “Seems like she likes you. Keep her, she’s yours, glad to have found her a home. Well, thank you for finding her. I’m gonna assume you already met Charlotte and Rose, huh?”
Avery nodded, “Yep. They seemed nice.”
Forest shrugged, “Charlotte can be a bit of an ass sometimes. But he’s a good friend.”
He looked down as his phone rang, “Ah, damn. What, Cinder? No, I haven’t seen Aspen. For stars sakes, I’m not a damn babysitter. Why don’t you ask Moss? He hasn’t seen them either? Shit, okay. Ugh, I hope they didn’t go on an insane adventure again. Yeah, I gotta go. Uh huh, yeah, love you too, bye Cinder. Sorry, little brothers, you know?”
Mel let out a snort, “Oh boy do I. I’m the oldest of these idiots.”
Avery punched Mel lightly, “By an hour. Jaiden’s the only definitive youngest. Mel and I are twins. You said your siblings’ names were Cinder and Aspen?”
Forest nodded, “Yep. Cinder’s a scientist. He lives up in the mountains near Char. They’re pretty good friends, Char usually gives me updates about him”
After the whole ordeal finished, Jaiden got to planting. While Avery took care of the chick, they named her Darrell, Jaiden started on a farm. Mostly what he did was just hoeing different spots for seeds to go. After that, he pulled his own, Mel’s, and Avery’s money together to go out and get some seeds. He walked to the local shop where a man watched him pick out all the seeds.
He brought them up to the front, “Hi, just these please.”
The man nodded, “You must be new, the name’s Lucifer, call me Luci.”
Jaiden stifled a laugh, “Lucifer? Like the devil?”
Luci nodded, “Mhm, my parents had…weird ideas when naming me. Not as bad as some people here though. Like 20 and Mayday.”
Jaiden started counting out the gold he’d need, “So, who’s Mayday?”
Luci sighed, “He’s Rose’s little brother. He’s a soldier fighting in the Ferngill republic right now. Poor Rose has been struggling to keep this place going by himself. May’s usually there to add a little ease to the chaos. We…haven’t heard from May in a while. So pretty much just let him know if you hear anything. I-…Rose would love to get word from him.”
Jaiden suddenly felt a little sad, he couldn’t imagine if something like that was happening to Avery or Mel. Maybe he’d ask Rose what his favorite fruit was and bring it to him later.
Jaiden returned with the seeds and gave the pouches of gold to Mel and Avery. He and Mel set to work on planting the seeds and watering them.
At the same time, Avery came eagerly rushing out, “Guys look what I made!”
Jaiden turned, his hands covered in mud and dirt, “What?”
Avery staked it into the ground, “I made sprinklers so you don’t have to manually water everything! I payed a visit to the local blacksmith who gave me some copper and iron nuggets as well as a furnace recipe. So now we have a furnace by the house and sprinklers. We still ought to get beds, though.”
Mel huffed, “We need a larger house if we’re going to get beds. It’s hardly big enough to cook in. I can’t believe grandpa raised mom here.”
Jaiden threw a ball of mud at Mel, it landing right on Mel’s cheek, “Shut up, I’m sure this was big when mom was a kid. Let’s just keep going.”
Mel grinned and returned fire, “Come back here you little shit! I’m gonna get you!”
Avery merely rolled his eyes and smiled as they slung mud at each other. Quickly realizing, this was gonna be a problem. Still, the valley was nice and calm, serene. Maybe they could build their lives here.
Notes:
For you Stardew fans in chat, yes, I know you’re supposed to get the cat after making a certain amount of money or after a certain amount of time, still, they get the cat early bc I said so
Chapter Text
It was a few days after they arrived that Avery met up with Charlotte again. He was trying, failing, but trying to plant a garden.
Avery dashed over, “Yo, Char! You alright man?”
Charlotte shook his head, “I’ve been trying for ages now but I can’t get these damn tomatoes to grow. I wanted to give them to Cinder since he’s been talking non-stop about how he wants to study and cook with them but I can’t get them to grow correctly. You got any advice? You’re the farmer.”
Avery nodded, “For one, tomatoes are a sun plant, they need to be out of shade so planting them under a tree isn’t a good idea. Next, add a sprinkler so you don’t gotta water them all the time. Give it some time and it should bloom soon.”
Charlotte sighed, “thanks, Avery. Where are you heading anyway?”
Avery pointed at the lake, “Fishing, met 20 yesterday and he gave me a fishing pole. As well as ones for Mel and Jay.”
Charlotte perked up a bit, “Ooh, you might wanna go check out the mines. They just got the boulder that fell there moved out of the way. I heard you can find some good stuff.”
Avery nodded, “I’ll keep it in mind, thanks Char. Tell Cinder I said hi.”
He walked to the mines and was met with someone looking down and clicking his tongue slightly.
The man perked up, “Oh, I didn’t realize the public was allowed here now. Hi, I’m Wick. I run the adventurer's guild with my buddy Gil. You are?”
”Avery.”
”Nice to meet you Avery. Hmm, you’re a bit of a string bean.”
”What do you mean?”
”You’re scrawny, that’s what. You’re gonna get your ass kicked. Here, this should help some. Don’t expect me to come by and pull you out of there if you get hurt. See ya, Ava.”
”It’s Avery! Geez, what a prick. And why do I need a sword to go mining? Weirdo.”
Avery left the pole near the front of the cave and climbed down the ladder. He nearly screamed as he saw a slime.
He grinned, “Aww, you’re a little cutie pie! Ow! Ow that hurts!”
He swung a few times and hit the slime until it turned into a little pile of goop on the floor.
He winced, “Okay, not cute. Well, that was enough fun for- OH SHIT!”
Just as he was about to leave, a bat flew at him. It took a few hits, but he managed to kill it and several other monsters that came at him.
He quickly climbed out, panting, “I am never going mining again.”
Jaiden was sitting near the green beans with Darrell in his lap when Avery got back.
Jaiden set the chick and his book down and quickly rushed over, “Mel get the first aid kit!”
he threw Avery’s arm over his shoulders and pried the pole and sword from his brother’s hands. He set both down near the house and laid Avery on the tile. Mel ran over with the kit full of bandages.
Mel quickly wrapped Avery’s few wounds up, “What the hell did you do!”
Avery coughed, “Slims are not cute. They’re mean.”
Jaiden frowned, “You tried to cuddle a slime? How dumb are you?! Even I know not to do that! Ave, you could’ve gotten killed!”
Avery rolled his eyes, “Oh please, it’s not that serious. I’m fine.”
Mel forced Avery back down, “Says the one who was bleeding out on the tile not five minutes ago. Rest, Jay and I got the chores for the next few days.”
After some days of rest, Avery stayed with Jaiden on the farm to do chores while Mel went out to the cave. Avery was currently out purchasing a few house upgrades from Charlotte and Jaiden was hanging out with Moss.
Jaiden smiled, “You’re pretty cool to hang out with, Moss.”
Moss cracked a small smile, “Is that just because I give you drugs?”
Jaiden rolled his eyes, “No, that’s because you teach me how to do magic. So, wait, that green magic tea was just drugs?”
Moss laughed, “Contained them, but it wasn’t fully drugs. A bit of weed with some other stuff, I think I accidentally tossed a mushroom or two in. Oh well, it was cool, right?”
Jaiden deadpanned, “For you maybe.”
The two hung out and talked a while until Jaiden’s phone buzzed with a text from Avery to come home. Tonight was Mel’s cooking night and he was the best chef of the three. Mel whipped up a nice meal from the ingredients on the farm. The three had stuck to only eating fish and whatnot rather than the other things they’d eaten in the city. Granted, in the city they all worked late so it was mostly pizza and take out.
After dropping some stuff in the shipping bin that night, the trio went to bed. Jaiden opted to move his sleeping bag to the abandoned greenhouse while Charlotte upgraded the farmhouse. So he curled up there for the night. And the next few.
Mel paced nervously. It was 10 pm and Jaiden wasn’t back yet.
Avery walked out of his room, “Still no, Jay?”
Mel shook their head, “I’m worried, what if he’s hurt?”
Jaiden walked in just after that, “I’m home.”
Mel ran over and grabbed Jaiden’s shoulders, “Where have you been?! We’ve been worried sick! You didn’t leave anything but a note and promise you’d be back by eight!”
Jaiden blinked, “It is eight.”
Avery shook his head, “Jay, it’s 10. Where were you?”
Jaiden shrugged, “The mines.”
Avery paled, “The MINES?! You went to the mines, no sword, no nothing?!”
Jaiden tugged the sword from his hip, “picked this up on the way over. Wick told me since I killed 10 slimes I’m in the adventurer’s guild. I left at 1, made it there by 2, and went mining at 2:30. Sorry, I’m late.”
Mel sighed, “We were just worried. There’s dinner in the fridge, I’m going to bed.”
Avery turned, “Night Mel, Jay, please just be more careful next time. And put that in your note before you leave, ‘Kay?”
Jaiden rolled his eyes and nodded, “Mhm, night Avery.”

Chapter Text
Time passed quickly and suddenly it was the day of the egg hunt. Jaiden had focused more on making connections than his brothers had. Though Mel had no interest in it, both Jaiden and Avery wanted to hunt the eggs with the others. The duo ran off as soon as they could and returned to the center of town with about 11 eggs each. Rose grinned, “Well done! Umm…Avery wins because of alphabetical order I guess. I can’t really choose.”
Avery ruffled Jaiden’s hair, “See, told you I would! What do I get?”
Rose smiled and handed Avery a straw hat with a yellow ribbon tied to the center, “This hat!”
Avery looked very disappointed, “So, uh, Jaiden, would you like to take the prize?”
Jaiden got a sly look on his face, “Well, dear brother, the king needs to take his crown, don’t you agree?” Practically the entire town, especially Jaiden and Mel, was holding back laughter as a disappointed Avery accepted his prize. Avery mouthed a few choice words to Jaiden.
Avery was on a walk late at night coming home from spending the day at the bar talking to Mori and his…rat? Mouse? Whatever. He stopped to sit at the pond and skip some rocks. As he did, Shane came up.
Shane took a seat, “Long day?”
Avery nodded, “Yeah, Jaiden came home with a bunch of scrapes from the mines and a fever.”
Shane handed Avery a can, “You look like you could use a drink.”
Avery took it, “Thanks…the sky is so pretty at night.”
“Yeah…sometimes I wonder what it’s like to be a star. Giving your all until you finally burn out. Keep going and going until eventually…you die. Seems like a nice existence.”
“Well, doesn’t Jas need you?”
“Jas has Penny and the town. She’ll be fine without me. Better than fine, really. She doesn’t need me. But you, you’ve got your whole life ahead of you. You’ve got your siblings and your farm, and Midnight. I’ve wasted all my good years at Joja. So much time dedicated to a company who hates me. Well, take care of yourself Avery, don’t drink too much.”
Avery watched Shane leave, stalking off towards Forest’s house where he was letting Shane and Jas live. Avery sighed and started walking home. He poked his head into Jaiden’s room. Jaiden was asleep and muttering something under their breath. He felt their forehead, good, the fever broke. He tucked them in a bit more before heading off to bed himself.
Jaiden was up and ready to go the next morning but Mel forced him to get back in bed, informing him that Avery was taking him to Harvey in a bit.
Avery came in, “Hey, ready, Jay?”
Jaiden huffed and got up, “Yeah. I still don’t see why I gotta go to the doctor. I feel fine now.”
Avery frowned, “Really? Last night you were running a 39° (103 Fahrenheit) fever.”
Jaiden relented, “Fine. But I’m telling you I’m okay.”
Jaiden impatiently bounced their leg. They’d somehow managed to convince Avery just to drop them off and go back to the farm after. They sighed in relief as Harvey walked in.
Harvey glanced at his clipboard, “Just a cold, nothing to worry about. It’s good you came in, though.”
Jaiden sighed, “How come?”
Harvey set down the clipboard, “Well, if it was something more serious I could help. Still, just rest and make sure you rest and get plenty of water.”
Jaiden smirked, “Could I get that in writing? I gotta convince Mel and Ave that I’m fine.”
Harvey laughed, “Sure, here. Have a good day, Jaiden. And I’m serious. Get some rest.”
As soon as they got home, Jaiden curled up on the couch with Midnight and fell asleep. Okay, so maybe they were just a tad more tired than they wanted to admit. Well…they didn’t wake up until midnight. So…yeah, very much tired. They sat up and looked around. Someone, probably Avery, had moved them back to their room. They yawned and got out of bed. They threw themself onto the beanbag and curled up with a book there. Might as well read to pass some time. They fell asleep there too.
The next morning, he was the last one up. Having really only woken up because Midnight was licking his face. He’d gently shoved her off and tried to roll over to sleep again but Midnight was adamant about him getting up. He sighed, Harvey said no mining for a few days to make sure he’s over the cold. So…what now? He quickly got up and dressed, grabbing a raincoat and a few items. They seemed random. But he’d been stockpiling them for a while. He tucked everything away and quickly left the house.
He smiled as the junimos scurried around.
He knelt next to the magic stone and set the stuff on it, “Man, I don’t know why you little ones needed this stuff but here, I guess. Now for the next one.”
He froze as a few of the Junimo’s appeared around him. He watched them all happily dance around, fixing up the place in a matter of seconds. He smiled bright and dashed to the pantry. Setting down each item they needed and them doing it again.
It was about 6 am when Mel shook Jaiden awake, “Jay, wake up. Jaiden, c’mon, get up. Jaiden Luna Carter, get up!”
Jaiden rolled over and groaned, “Go away, Mel. It’s too early for this.”
Mel rolled his eyes and picked up Jaiden, “Okay, then I guess I’m gonna just drop you.”
Jaiden nodded, “Uh huh, yeah okay.” Mel smirked and tossed Jaiden to the floor. That did the trick, “What the hell man! I was trying to sleep!”
Mel smirked, “Get your ass up then. Come on, it’s time to get to work.”
As the duo walked outside, they found Avery holding Darrell with his mouth agape as he stared at the new structure.
Avery turned, “We didn’t commission Char for this…what the hell…”
Mel blinked, “What the hell indeed…”
Jaiden shook off the shock, “Let’s go inside!”
Avery squeaked and started running after Jaiden, “Jay! We don’t know if it’s dangerous or not!”
Mel sighed, “Avery, a word.”
Avery paused and walked over to Mel, “What? I need to make sure Jay doesn’t hurt himself.”
Mel shook his head, “No, you don’t. Jaiden might be an idiot but he’s certainly capable of being alone and not getting himself hurt. He’s no child, Avery.”
Avery set Darrell down, “I know that…”
Mel set his hand on Avery’s shoulder, “Do you really? Look at him, Ave. that’s the face of an adult, not a kid. He’s grown, you can relax. You did good. He’s okay.”
Avery starred as Jaiden excitedly waved through the glass on the greenhouse, “Just…since grandpa and stuff…I’m worried.”
Mel blinked, “Is that what this is about? Grandpa? Ave, look at me. Grandpa was old, Jay and I are gonna be fine.”
Avery sighed, “Yeah…thanks Mel.” He managed a small smile and let out a small gasp as Mel dragged him to the new greenhouse.
Notes:
I’m a fucking idiot, to explain, the craft room and pantry are impossible to get done in spring unless you have remixed bundles on…so from here on out the three of remixed bundles, ‘Kay? ‘Kay.
Also how would y’all feel if I did an EPIC CCCC crossover au with Whole as Odysseus and Melody (Whole’s love interest, I decided her name is Melody bc) as Penelope?
Chapter Text
Mel held the scythe tight in his hands. He glared at the field and swung it around, collecting several handfuls of hay in the process. He loaded them into his backpack before tossing them into the silo on his way to the coop. Darrell was a grown hen now. Mind bent down and scratched under her chin.
He smiled softly, “Hey bud. Guess it’s just you and me for the day. Why don’t I let you out and you help around the farm, yeah?”
all he got were excited clucks in response. But for Mel, that was plenty. He opened the coop’s chicken door and led Darrell out. He smiled as the little brown chicken ran circles in the yard.
By the time his siblings got home, Mel had harvested the things that had grown in the field, fed Darrell and Midnight, got enough hay for the auto feeder in Darrell’s coop for a few days, and made dinner. Jaiden walked out to the shipping bin with Mel, holding gems and various things in their arms.
Mel held the bin open, “Guess we both got quite the haul today.”
Jaiden smirked, “I got more blue stuff than the one who’s favorite color is blue.”
Mel rolled his eyes, “Jaiden, I will smack you.”
Jaiden stuck out their tongue, “Try me.”
Mel gently elbowed Jaiden, “You asked for it.”
Jaiden winced, “Owww, I have a bruise there, jerk.” After setting down the items into the bin, Jaiden gently shoved Mel back.
Mel let out a chuckle, “Alright, we’re even now I suppose.”
Jaiden rolled their eyes, “Be grateful I didn’t aim for a bruise.”
Mel flicked Jaiden’s cheek, “Oh please, I bruise like a peach, you probably made one you jerk.”
Avery woke up to the sun on his face. He yawned and dragged himself out of bed. Both he and Jaiden were night owls, waking up early was like torture. He got up and stretched, listening to each bit of his body give a satisfied pop as the air was released from inside his joints. He sighed, staring out the window. Mel and Darrell were running around the farm. Mel trying to get Darrell back into the coop while Darrell tried to get into the silo. Avery thought for a moment. He hadn’t been to the community center in a hot minute. He should go see if he could do anything with those large blocks.
After assisting Mel in getting Darrell into the coop, Avery headed to the community center. He saw…was that Jaiden? Why did they look so suspicious?
Avery started running up to them, “Jay!”
Jaiden froze and dashed off towards Charlotte’s house.
Avery frowned and started running after them, “Jaiden! Is something wrong? You can tell me!”
Jaiden kept their head down and slid into the mines, rapidly pressing the elevator button to see if it would summon faster. Avery huffed and puffed as he caught up to his younger sibling.
Avery sighed, “Jay, what the hell is wrong? You can just tell me.”
Jaiden dropped to the ground, “No.”
Avery cocked his eyebrow, “What do you mean no? You can’t tell me? You don’t want to tell me? What?”
Jaiden shook their head, “Can’t.”
Avery crossed his arms, “Jaiden, stop acting like a child. Just tell me.”
Jaiden mimicked Avery and huffed, “Stop treating me like one and accept my no.”
Avery frustratedly started to tug at the knife hilted at his side, “Jaiden, tell me.”
Jaiden quickly got into the elevator, “See ya at home, Ave.”
Avery got frustrated as the doors closed, “Damn it Jaiden!”
He, right, deep breaths, just like he’d been taught. In, then out again.
He balled up his fists and slipped the knife away, “I probably scared them. Of course I scared them, why wouldn’t I? I screwed up.”
Jaiden didn’t come home for the night. It was weeks later when he finally showed up at home. He looked fine, well kept and fine. Well, covered in a thin layer of dust from his most recent mining trip, but fine. He didn’t make eye contact with Avery. Mel was baking when he heard a knock on the door. He walked over and pulled it open. It was Rose.
Rose gave Mel a look then glanced at Avery, “Can I talk to you?”
Mel nodded and opened the door, “Sure, is there something you need?”
Rose shook his head, “Outside.”
Mel blinked but walked out, “Is everything alright?”
Rose shook his head again, “It’s…sorry, Jaiden reminds me of my little brother. But that’s not important for now. No, what I wanted to say is that, I’ve had Jaiden staying at my place for a few weeks now.”
Mel let out a sigh, “Oh thank the stars. We were worried he’d been staying in the mines.”
Rose sat down with his legs dangling off the porch, shivering as the night air swished around him, “He hasn’t. But he told me the last time he saw either of you, weeks ago, he was in the mines and Avery pulled a knife on him.”
Mel was startled, “Sorry, he what?”
Rose nodded, “He made me promise I wouldn’t say anything but I can’t just keep quiet. I just need to know he has a safe place other than with me. He can stay with me, of course, but I need to know he’s safe with his family.”
Mel was fuming silently, “I’ll handle it. Avery Astro Carter, get your ass out here before I drag it!”
Avery rolled his eyes, “What did I do now, mom.”
Mel grabbed Avery’s collar, “You pulled a knife on our brother?! Are you insane?!”
Avery blinked, “How did you find out? It was Jaiden wasn’t it. He snitched on me. That’s why he’s been avoiding us.”
“Us?! It sounds more like he was avoiding you! What were you thinking!?”
“He wouldn’t tell me what he was doing!”
“And that’s an excuse?!”
“Well no…”
“Exactly!”
Rose cleared his throat, “Um, I don’t mean to interrupt but I should get going.”
Avery was about to protest but Mel cut in, “Of course Rose, we don’t mean to keep you. Have a good night.”
Avery glared at Mel, “So, tell me oh high and mighty Mel, what are you going to do to me?”
Mel pushed Avery to the side, “Firstly, I’m going to help Jaiden pack and they’re going to go stay with someone while you and I talk about things. Next, I’m dealing with you.”
Jaiden and Mel came out a few minutes later with Jaiden holding a packed bag of things.
Mel gently squeezed their shoulder, “Remember, if you need me, call me.”
Jaiden huffed, “I’m not a little kid anymore, Mel. I’ll be fine. Thank you for worrying, but I’ll be okay, I swear.”
Mel hugged Jaiden, “Be safe.”
Mel turned to Avery, “Now, to deal with you.”
Notes:
Ok, so, I have a really weird thing to say, not bad weird just weird.
*deep inhale* WHY THE FUCK DID CHONNY JASH SOUND LIKE MY FUCKING FATHER DURING KK CRUSIN.
Obviously no one on here knows what my dad sounds like, but my dad sometimes mimics the animal crossing noises in the EXACT SAME WAY Chonny Jash did KK Slider’s voice. Still, it scared the shit out of me and I was like, “Dad?!” (I was upstairs in my room and he was asleep in his downstairs).
Chapter Text
Jaiden was asleep on his couch. Charlotte sighed and gently brushed the hair out of Jaiden’s face. Poor kid was probably exhausted. He’d gotten the bare bones of it from Mel and Rose but nonetheless it seemed like the kid hadn’t rested in a while. Not properly anyway. Charlotte gently shook Jaiden, “Jay, wake up, come on.”
Jaiden rubbed their eyes, “Mmn?”
Charlotte helped them up, “I figured you’d want somewhere more comfy than a couch. I’ve got a room for you in the basement. Let’s move you there, I know you’re tired.”
Jaiden just nodded. Charlotte waited until Jaiden was asleep again before leaving.
He walked over to the phone and called Rose, “Hey, I know you said before that Jaiden could tell me what was wrong but I don’t wanna make them tell me. They seem tired.”
Rose sighed, “It’s complicated. All I know is what Jaiden told me. Which wasn’t much. I know part of the problem is Avery but that’s about where my knowledge ends. So yeah. Sorry Char, I’m not a lot of help here. We’re just about the only people who’ve been told. We can assume Moss knows already but Moss is Moss.”
Charlotte nodded and started pacing, “Well, we can’t just let them go back if Avery is like that.”
Rose agreed wholeheartedly, “Yeah, but Jay’s an adult and can make their own choices. Still, I do think it would be wise to make sure they know they have a safe space.”
Jaiden woke up a few hours later. In the last few weeks it had mostly been Rose’s house or the mines so they were a bit disoriented when they woke up in Charlotte’s spare room. They sighed and grabbed some money from their backpack. Charlotte’s shop wasn’t open just yet but still, staying here wasn’t an option.
Charlotte was making breakfast for himself when he saw Jaiden, “Morning, how are you feeling?”
Jaiden shrugged and held out the money, “Fine. Here, thanks for letting me stay last night.”
Charlotte nodded, “No problem. You know you have a place where you’re safe if anything happens. You don’t need to pay me, it’s fine. If you’re insistent on repaying me for some reason just help me out with some chores, yeah?”
Jaiden blinked confusedly, “Uhh, okay, sure.”
Mel was at Charlotte’s doing some business and saw Jaiden working on a small garden around the side of Charlotte’s house. Mel came over, “Morning, Jay. What are you doing?”
Jaiden looked up, “Oh, morning Mel. I was just working on a small garden for Charlotte. He’s said he’s tired of Luci being an ass but also doesn’t want to go to Joja for his shopping so he asked if I could plant a garden.”
Mel nodded, “Alright just don’t overexert yourself. Oh, also, I’m going into the city with Avery in a couple of days to get his mental state checked out. If I leave sticky notes on the table can you remember to take care of the plants and feed Darrell?”
Jaiden sat up, “Yeah sure. I’ll move back into my room too. Remember to text me updates.”
Mel gently ruffled Jaiden’s hair, “Alright little sibling. Be good while we’re gone, okay? I’ll text you when we leave.”
Jaiden huffed and pushed Mel’s hand away, “Yeah, yeah, okay, get going you dork.”
Mel snorted, “Alright, still, be good for Charlotte, okay?”
Jaiden nodded and hugged Mel, “I will.”
It was a few days later when Jaiden went back to the farmhouse. Darrell was already fed so all that was left was the crops. After watering them, he walked to the mines. A few hours passed and Jaiden emerged with a backpack laden with items. Including something rare he found.
There was still a bit of time left so he walked to the museum, “Hey Nox, I got something for you.”
Nox looked up from the book he was reading, “Mm?”
Jaiden set it on the museum counter, “Can you tell me what this is?”
The gemstone flickered all colors of the rainbow. It was bright and glowing.
Nox adjusted his glasses, “Ah! This is a prismatic shard! A rare find! Good work, Jaiden.”
Jaiden smiled a bit, “Thanks. Slow day?”
Nox sighed, “Yeah. Penny’s not coming in to give Vincent and Jas lessons today so it’s been fairly lonely. Harvey popped by earlier with Maru but that was just to grab a few books. What about you?”
Jaiden glanced out the window, “I gotta head home soon. My siblings are out of town for a bit so I’m taking care of the farm myself.”
Nox nodded and shooed Jaiden out, “It’s closing time anyway. Have a good night Jaiden.”
Jaiden waved as he left, “Night, Nox!”
Jaiden was still tending to Charlotte’s garden even though Charlotte had insisted she didn’t need to anymore. Still, Jaiden left Charlotte with a book on growing some things before heading into town. It was harvesting day meaning Jaiden would need new seeds. After purchasing some from Lucifer, she went home and picked everything. After planting the new seeds, she went to Mori’s to play Journey of the Prairie king. As she went back to the games area she noticed a game that was once closed down.
She blinked, “Junimo Kart? What’s that?”
She started it up and began playing, “Huh, weird.”
She played much longer than intended. Only stopping when Mori came over and tapped her on the shoulder.
Mori handed his rat on his shoulder a little treat, “Sorry, just you’ve been playing a while. I think it’s time for a break. Just wanted to bring you some water and remind you to do something other than video games for a while. I know Junimo Kart is addictive. I’ve played it myself, can’t beat Sebastian or Rose, though.”
Jaiden smiled, “Thanks, Mori. Thank you too…uh…what’s his name again?”
Mori looked at the rat then back at Jaiden with a grin, “Jouse.”
Jaiden pet Jouse behind the ears, “Thank you, Jouse. Alright, I’m going home. Sorry I stayed so late.”
Mori shrugged, “Not a problem. Shane and Louis stay much longer than you do. Plus it’s only like 7, nowhere near closing time.”
Jaiden blinked confusedly, “Louis?”
Mori nodded, “You haven’t met him? Yo! Lou! This is Jaiden. Jaiden, this is Louis, the town bus driver.”
Louis held out his hand, “Hey, I haven’t met you yet kid, nice to meet you. I met Mel and Avery this morning. I promise I’m just a bit hungover when I drive.” He chuckled after that. Jaiden felt a bit off put but oh well.
Notes:
Yep, Louis is Pam. Why? Uhh…idfk, I thought it’d be funny ig.

Jaiden fell asleep on the couch. Not like it was uncommon, they were just exhausted. They woke up to the scent of pancakes. They bolted upright and grinned, “you’re home!” They threw their arms around Mel.
Mel gently pushed Jaiden away, “Jay! You’re gonna burn yourself!”
Jaiden giggled, “and? Either way, glad you’re home. Where’s Ave?”
Mel sighed, “sleeping. They did some drug tests or something. Ave’s clean, just mentally unstable. We’re to keep him away from knives and shit until he chills out. They also put him on like anxiety meds or something.”
Jaiden sat down at the table, “that bad?”
Mel nodded, “Dude, he nearly attacked you. We’re still not sure why he did.”
Jaiden looked away, “I was keeping a secret from him.”
Mel set down the spatula, “Sorry, what? He tried to attack you because you wouldn’t tell him something?”
Jaiden curled into themself, “Yeah…I’m sorry.”
Mel rolled his eyes, “Why are you apologizing. That’s not okay. What he did, I mean.”
Jaiden brought their knees to their chest, “I know, but I know Avery has a lot of issues with keeping secrets. I upset him.”
Mel gently rested a hand on Jaiden’s shoulder, “You’ve been feeling guilty all week haven’t you?”
Jaiden shyly nodded.
Mel gently ran a hand through Jadien’s hair, “It’s alright, it’s not your fault, Jay. You know it’s not, don’t you?”
Jaiden looked up at Mel with teary eyes, “Y-yeah.”
Mel ruffled Jaiden’s hair, “How about we go to Mori’s tonight. Dinner on me, okay?”
Jaiden shook their head, “No…thanks though. I’m gonna go cuddle Darrell.”
Mel sighed and glanced at the calendar. The flower dance was in a few days. Not like he’d be going with anyone. Maybe Jaiden could dance with him? No, it was weird to do the flower dance as siblings. Sebastian and Maru both danced, but not with each other. They also didn’t really like each other though. Maybe he’d just sit out. That would work. He could sit out and if his siblings wanted to do it they could. How big of a deal was it anyway? Couldn’t be that hard, right?
It was a sunny Wednesday, dew was still on the grass and clung to the flowers. And somehow, Jaiden was already dirty. Great.
Mel was scrubbing at Jaiden’s face as they hissed, “Let me go!”
Mel huffed, “You need to look nice today. I told you that. Today is the flower dance, do you really wanna be all messy?”
Jaiden let out a growl, not unsimilar to Midnight’s, “Mel, I’ll be fine. Let me finish doing my chores.”
Mel adjusted so his arm was around Jaiden’s torso, “You’re sitting here until we get the dirt off. Mom and dad are coming to watch and I don’t want them seeing their daughter crusted in dirt.”
“I’m not-”
“I know that, Jaiden. But you know exactly how that talk is going to go. If you wanna avoid it, tell them when they get here.”
“...fine.”
“Good. Alright, go get your dress on.”
Jaiden huffed and walked to their room. Mel ran a hand through his hair and tied it back so it wouldn’t get in his face.
He stared at the mirror, “Wish you were here, grandpa. Maybe you could convince them about Jay and me.”
He was startled out of his thoughts and hurriedly tugged on his blazer.
He dashed to the door, “Mom, dad, hi, we thought you’d be another hour.”
His mother, Natalie, smiled gently, “We thought we’d surprise you three with breakfast before the dance. Where’s your siblings?”
Mel glanced around, “Jay’s getting dressed and so is Avery.”
Jaiden’s dad, Luke, walked in, “Nice to see you again, Mel.”
Mel and Avery’s dad had broken up with Natalie when she had them. They didn’t know their father, nor did either care to. Luke had been enough of a father, as had Harmonia. Mel let out a small huff as Luke ruffled his hair.
Mel playfully swatted, “Hey, dad, cut it out.”
Luke let out a small laugh and straightened Mel’s tie, “Sorry, just trying to make sure you’re all prepared for today. You got a girl you're dancing with?”
Mel shook his head, “Nah. Uh, just out of curiosity…how would you react if I said I was aroace?”
Luke shrugged, “Mel, whoever you do or don’t wanna be with is your choice. I couldn’t care less. You’re my son, I’ll be there for you either way, okay? Are you?”
Mel nodded and Luke hugged him, “You could’ve told me. Oh, and just so we’re clear, I already know about Jaiden. They told me before you three left. Your mother and I know.”
Jaiden ran out and threw themself at Luke, “Dad!”
Mel let out a small panicked gasp but relaxed as Luke caught Jaiden, “Jay, good grief. You gotta be more careful.”
Luke gently ruffled Jaiden’s hair, “You’re a ball of trouble, kid. Alright, where’s Avery?”
Jaiden had a light purple dress with black leggings and a grey jacket on. Avery had a skirt with a nice-looking white shirt, and a jacket thrown over top. Mel was the only one in a full suit.
Just as Jaiden was about to run off and go say hi to the others, Mel pulled them back and clipped a bowtie to their shirt, “There. Alright, go have fun.”
Jaiden nodded and ran off. Mel sat down on a bench and watched Avery and Jaiden mingle.
As Mel was sitting, Abigail came over, “Hey. Saw you over here alone. Everything okay?”
Mel looked up, “Yeah I’m fine, thanks. You gonna dance this year?”
Abigail shook her head, “Nah. Sebastian wants me to, but I’m not gonna. You know those people?” She pointed at Luke and Natalie.
Mel nodded, “My parents. They wanted to come visit us for the Flower Dance.”
Abigail just nodded. As it got started, the two stayed sitting and chatted about all manner of things. Avery and Jaiden decided to dance with each other, since neither had really met many people aside from those they interacted with for business. Avery knew Shane, but he was sitting out too. Mel laughed as Avery pretended to drop Jaiden. Letting out a small snort.
At the end of the night, both Jaiden and Avery were sufficiently exhausted. Mel carried Jaiden home but forced Avery to walk. Luke and Natalie were staying at the inn Mori ran on the side. It was mostly for when patrons passed out drunk at his bar and he didn’t want to risk them walking home.
Notes:
Btw, Mel, Jaiden, and Avery all have Luke’s last name. Yes, Mel and Avery are Jaiden’s half siblings but that changes absolutely nothing. Luke adopted Mel and Avery since he and Natilie met when the twins were like 6 months old and were married when they turned 3. Jaiden was born a year later.
Chapter 8
Summary:
Mel, Avery, and Jaiden have just finished their first month in the valley and are moving into summer. So, what happens in summer year 1? Green Rain, >:).
Notes:
Hey guys! Sorry it took a minute to write again, felt kinda burnt out from writing a lot during Chaos Week so I took a little break. But, I'm back with another Stardew chapter!
TWs:
Green Rain event (Year 1 it's very dark and depressing.)
Religion
Mentions of a missing sibling (Aspen and Forest talk about Cinder while Rose talks to Mori about Mayday, all of this is very brief).
The news being useless (When is it not)
Demetrius gets mentioned (ew, ok context, I tried to marry Maru but I did not want Demetrius as my father-in-law so I married Abigail instead)
I think this would qualify as near mass hysteria?
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Summer had arrived in the valley. The air was warm, the sun was bright, but it was also the rainy season. Jaiden was sitting on the couch, curled up with Avery. It was raining, no need to check on anything today. Mel came out and flopped down next to them. It took some time, but after a few anger management classes Avery calmed down.
The trio were channel surfing when they clicked onto an emergency news broadcast, “This is not a test. This emergency broadcast is regarding the following places, Zuzu city, Grampleton, and Stardew Valley. We have gotten some interference and believe it might be a tornado or something dangerous. Please use extreme caution.”
Jaiden shot up, “We gotta get the house ready…stars, what are we gonna do?”
Avery rested a hand on Jaiden’s shoulder, “You and I are gonna go get wood. Mel, can you handle previsions?”
Mel nodded, “Yeah, axes are by the door, I’ll get ready.”
Forest stood outside his door, “Jaiden! Why the hell are you out in a rainstorm without a jacket?!”
Jaiden turned around, “Cutting some wood to secure the house!”
Forest sighed and tugged on a raincoat, “Where’s your umbrella? You’ll get sick.”
Jaiden rolled their eyes, “I’ll be fine, thanks though.”
Forest shook his head, “No, go home, put on a raincoat, and then come back.”
Jaiden huffed, “Fine.”
When Jaiden came back, they were in a raincoat with a hood tugged on their head. Forest looked them up and down before nodding and handing Jaiden their axe back.
After a few hours, the siblings had all the things they needed. Sleeping bags were brought down into the cellar that was usually reserved for storage, aging, and making cheese. Avery, out of fear for the little chicken, had run out and grabbed Darrell. Midnight was curled up on Jaiden’s lap on one side of the room while Darrell had created a nest for himself on the other. Mel was already asleep. Jaiden was staring up at the door from the bottom of the stairs.
Avery glanced at Jaiden, “Jay, you alright?”
Jaiden shook their head, “I’m scared. We don’t know what’s going on, what if it is a tornado. We’re not gonna be safe down here.”
Avery set Darrell down and walked across the room, “Shh, it’s gonna be okay. I know you and I haven’t been on the best terms lately and I’m sure I’m the last person you want comforting you. But I promise, Mel and I aren’t gonna let anything bad happen.”
It was early the next morning and Mel was the first one up. After leaving the cellar, it was proven there was at least no tornado. Everything had a vaguely green hue to it. He tossed on a raincoat and grabbed an umbrella, as well as putting on his gardening gloves and a mask. Couldn’t be too careful. He stepped outside, green, green everywhere. The rain was green, there were tall trees in the shape of Fiddlehead ferns. Mel stared at the expanse before him. Well, at least it didn’t appear harmful to plant life. Actually, it seemed as if the plant were thriving with the rain. There were more bushes, grass, and various other plants. He shook off the shock. If it wasn’t dangerous, then there was still farmwork to be done.
Jaiden woke up last, having snuggled with Avery the night before. Midnight was still in their lap, but Avery and Mel were nowhere to be found.
Jaiden rubbed their eyes, “Mel? Ave? Guys?”
They grabbed their glasses and slid them on. After standing up, Jaiden left the room. They looked around, the house was empty. Oh no, were Avery and Mel okay? Had they gone missing? What was happening? And why was everything green?
Mel came in moments after, “Morning, Jay. Turns out, everything’s fine. It’s just green rain. Actually, the plants love it. Come look.”
Jaiden looked out the window, “Wow, they’re thriving out there.”
Mel nodded, “Yeah. I was out there cutting down some of the thick bushes and I could scarcely cut through them.”
Jaiden groaned, “Ugh, we’re gonna have to clean the entire farm again tomorrow.”
Avery came in, “Yo, everyone’s held up in the tavern. Mori’s making sure everyone’s ok, they want us to come by. Grab your shit, we’re going.”
Upon entering the tavern, a few residents had set up a shrine to Yoba where Emily was kneeled with Haley close by. Jodi was there too. Jaiden looked around, even Nox, who scarcely left the library, was there. Forest was chewing out Aspen.
Aspen whined, “But I wanna go out there and see it all. I gotta collect some samples.”
Forest shook his head, “Absolutely not. We don’t know what it is, it could be dangerous. No brother of mine is dumb enough to go out there.”
Jaiden walked over, “Actually, the rain’s perfectly safe. It’s making the plants larger but that’s it.”
Aspen’s eyes glimmered, “See! I’m leaving.”
Forest sighed and yanked on Aspen’s hood, “You are staying right here with me until it’s safe. With us not knowing where Cinder is, I’m not about to risk it. So sit down or sleep or something but you’re not going out.”
Rose was pacing in the arcade while Mori tried in vain to calm him, “Rose, hey, look at me, I’m sure wherever May is he’s safe.”
Rose snapped, “You don’t know that! What if he’s been captured?! Are they forcing him to stay out in this?! It could be toxic, and my brother could be out in it!”
Mori sighed, “I know you’re worried. Sit, and breathe. It’ll be ok, I’m sure.”
Rose relented, “Ok, I guess you’re right.”
Mel came in from around the side, “Hey, just checking who all is here. Some people are missing.”
Mori turned to Mel, “Yeah, Sebastian, Maru, and Demitrus are staying at their house in the basement. Leah opted to stay at her place, as did Moss. Luci and Char went out earlier to check on everyone.”
Mel nodded, “Yeah, Luci popped by and said we should come to the saloon. We spent last night in the cellar. The rain seems to be safe though. The plants love it. Ave and I were out in it earlier and we were alright. I think it’s fine to be in.”
Rose sighed in relief, “Good. You think we could send everyone home?”
Mori thought for a moment, “I think so. I’ll leave the tavern open since I know some people are scared. So, I’ll leave it open to choice. They can leave if they wish but they’ve got a safe place if not.”
The next morning was bright and sunny. Almost immediately, Jaiden was outside, digging in the dirt to plant the new seeds they’d gained from the trees the day before. Mel helped to prep the soil while Avery sprayed the seeds with water. Jaiden eagerly collected moss to use for crafting later on after the seeds were in. While Avery opened the door to the coop and barn. Mel tied up his hair and started harvesting the greenhouse plants.
Notes:
Ya'll, I got beef with Stardew rn. I accidentally blew up my Statue of Blessings and didn't realize until after the day ended. So now I gotta make a new one. It's just making me mad because it costs 999 sap, fiber, and stone IN ADDITION TO 333 moss. Yes, I know I was dumb but still. I think I'm just about back to where I can make another though.
Also, there's a Stardew portrait maker on Itch.Io I used to make Avery, Mel, and Jaiden Stardew portraits. lemme know if ya'll wanna see that.
Chapter 9
Summary:
It’s Mel and Avery’s birthday! So they’re going to Zuzu City for a change of scenery.
Btw, Avery and Mel’s birthday is Summer 12 for reference.
Notes:
And thus my for CCCC’s birthday. I love this album. Not my favorite CJ work, that honor goes to the Majora’s Mask songs, but I do love it.

Chapter Text
Mel sighed as they tried knocking on Avery’s door, again, “Ave, come on, Jay and I are waiting.”
Avery called from inside, “Just a second!”
Mel crossed his arms, “What are you doing in there?”
Avery rolled his eyes, “My makeup, obviously. How’s Jay?”
Mel glanced down the hall at the living room, “Fine, antsy. He’s all dressed up nice and stuff.”
Avery finally came out after nearly 10 minutes, “Finished. You two ready?”
Jaiden jumped up and ran to Avery, grabbing his hand, “Finally. Yes, we’ve been ready for an hour.”
It wasn’t often the three went back into the city for any reason. They rarely did as they could just grow anything they needed. Jaiden made sure the animals were safe before scooping some food into Midnight’s bowl, petting her, and letting her back into the house.
He dusted off his skirt and leggings, “Can we please leave already? I’m starving.”
Mel rolled their eyes, “You are not starving, you are merely hungry. Come on, let’s get going before poor little Jaiden wastes away.”
Jaiden punched Mel’s arm, “Shut up, jerk.”
Mel rubbed the spot, “Geez, do you know how to solve anything without violence?”
Avery whistled sharply, “Come on, you promised you’d be good today. Let’s get going, we’ve got a lot to celebrate.”
Jaiden perked up, “Can I get-”
Avery gently hit the back of Jaiden’s head, “No, you are not getting alcohol tonight. Let’s go already.”
Jaiden fell asleep on Avery’s arm, which quickly went numb after.
Avery wrapped the arm around Jaiden, “Geez, Jay, lay off the sweets.”
Mel snorted from their seat across from the two, “Maybe you should just lift more.”
Avery bit back a retort, “Still. We outta keep the cookies Evelyn gives us away from him for a bit.”
Mel rolled their eyes, “How asleep is he?”
Avery sighed softly, “Extremely. Poor thing’s never been able to stay awake very long.”
Mel shrugged, “Still, You wanna swap seats? We still got a few stops before the bus gets us to Zuzu.”
Avery nodded, “Yeah.”
After swapping, Mel dug something out of his bag and handed it to Avery.
They smiled gently, “Here, happy birthday.”
Avery gasped and accepted it graciously, he opened it and grinned, “Aww, it’s great, Mel.”
It was a necklace with a trident charm that had a star at the handle.
Avery turned to Mel, “Your turn. Here, happy B-day, Mel.”
Mel opened the box gingerly, as though it were made of paper. The gift inside was a small bracelet with a crown and sun charm.
Mel laughed, “Guess we had the same thought, huh?”
Avery chuckled and nodded, “Yeah. How funny would it be if when Jay gives us whatever he got it was like earrings or something.”
Mel sighed, “Nah, not earrings. He knows I hate the feeling of them in my ears.”
It was a few minutes later when they arrived at the stop. Jaiden sleepily dragged himself up to his feet. He’d managed to smudge a bit of his lipstick that Mel had helped him put on. Mel turned to Jaiden with a towel and wiped the rest away. The three walked into the restaurant and sat down. When the waiter came to ask for drinks, Jaiden got chocolate milk. If he wasn’t allowed a grown up drink, he’d have a kid’s drink. Besides, he liked his chocolate milk.
Mel looked over the menu, “Ah, Jay, don’t forget to avoid anything with nuts. Ok?”
Jaiden rolled his eyes, “I know, I know. I’ll let them know.”
A little later, when dessert was brought out, Jaiden decided it was time. He pulled out two white boxes. One with a blue ribbon, the other red. He handed them to Mel and Avery respectively.
Avery went first and burst out laughing, “Oh my god, we were just talking about this on the bus. Jay, I love them, thank you.”
It was a set of chicken earrings, clearly handmade. Jaiden had been learning how to for a while.
Mel opened his and it was a small locket charm for Mel’s bracelet. He looked at Jaiden, “Were you two working together on this?”
Jaiden nodded eagerly, “Mhm, as soon as Avery told me he was getting you a charm bracelet I made this. Look inside.”
Inside was a picture, somewhat worn, but still clear. It was from shortly after they moved to the valley. Jaiden was holding up Midnight while Mel and Avery crouched to get into frame.
Mel ruffled Jaiden’s hair, “You’re a sweet kid, Jay. Thank you, I love it.”
Jaiden shook his head, “I’m not a kid, and watch the hair, it took me 20 minutes.”
Avery rolled his eyes, “C’mere!” Jaiden screeched as he was dragged into a hug.
On the way home, Jaiden was asleep again. Having once more fallen asleep on Avery’s shoulder. Avery was looking out the window as Mel sighed.
Mel turned to Avery, “How have you been doing? Like…since almost stabbing Jay?”
Avery kept staring out the window, “Well, I don’t really know. I’ve felt a weird mix of emotions. That didn’t feel like it was me, but it also felt more me than I can really explain. The meds have been helping, I guess. I feel less violent, but still, I don’t know how best to control my emotions really.”
Mel nodded, “Yeah, that makes sense. But like, do you feel guilty at all?”
Avery nodded, “Very.”
Mel looked down at Jaiden, “Well, good thing our little sibling is so forgiving. Damn kid’s got a bleeding heart.”
Avery sighed, “I guess. He can hold a grudge when he wants to, though. He was glad we were home, but avoided me until mom and dad came over.”
Mel reached into their backpack and clutched a letter tight to his chest, “What if I told you…someone was trying to get in touch with us?”
Avery looked over at Mel, “Who?”
Mel looked deep into Avery’s eyes, “You’re not gonna like it.”
Avery pinched the bridge of his nose, “Just tell me, Mel.”
Mel sighed and handed Avery the letter.

Chapter Text
Avery stared at the now open letter resting on his desk. He was, well, shocked wasn’t strong enough to describe his feelings. It wasn’t possible, it just wasn’t. He glanced at the letter again, searching the lines on the envelope to see the address. He sighed and picked it up, reading it again. He jumped when three sharp knocks were heard on the door. Ah, that was Jaiden.
Jaiden cleared his throat, “Ave? You in there? Dinner!”
Avery looked up from what he was doing, “Yeah! Just a minute, Jay!”
Jaiden nodded, “Alright! Just hurry! Mel made fiddlehead risotto. I wouldn’t want you to miss out!”
Avery perked up at that, “Ok! Just a sec!”
Jaiden was a better baker than they were a chef. Mel was the real cook of the three. Still, cooking duty rotated between the siblings. Avery and Jaiden weren’t bad at cooking, really. Jaiden was quite good at homemade fancy mac and cheese. Where Avery was good at making fish tacos. Each had a special dish they were proficient in. Mel’s was fiddlehead risotto. But with fiddleheads being somewhat rare back in the city, it wasn’t often they ate it.
Avery raced out the door and tackled Jaiden in the hall. Jaiden squeaked, “What the hell, Ave?!”
Avery grinned, “Can’t let my little sibling get there before me.”
Jaiden stared trying to scratch at Avery’s arms, “Let me up!”
Avery smirked, “I don’t think so, I think I’ll keep you pinned here all night.”
Jadien kneed Avery’s stomach and ran off, “Nice try, Ave!”
Avery groaned but got back onto his feet and walked shamefully to the table. Mel was scolding Jaiden to which Avery made himself look even more pitiful. As soon as Mel turned his back, Avery got a shit eating grin, flipping off Jaiden under the table. Jaiden kicked at Avery in response.
Mel set three plates on the table, “Alright, what do we say?”
Avery and Jaiden rolled their eyes, “Thank you Mel.”
“...And?”
“You’re the favorite child…”
“Good.”
Mel sat down with a smug grin. After dinner, Avery got to the dishes. Whoever cooked the night before did the dishes the night after. Meaning days Avery cooked Jaiden did dishes, days Jadien cooked Mel did dishes, etcetera. The system had been implemented after several fights between Jaiden and Mel. Mel was helping Jaiden put their hair up for bed while Avery did dishes.
He sighed, “Jay, there’s something Ave and I gotta tell you.”
Jaiden looked over at Mel, “Yeah?”
Mel glanced off to the side then back at Jaiden, “It’s…uh…here, I got you a plushie.”
Jaiden frowned, “Mel, I’m not a kid, just tell me.”
Mel shook his head, “It’s not important, just go to bed.”
Jaiden crossed their arms, “Mel, c’mon, I’m not that dumb.”
Mel stood up, “Night, Jay!”
Jaiden tried following him, “Mel, just tell me what’s going on, I’m an adult.”
Mel ignored them, continuing out of the room, “See you in the morning.”
Jaiden forced their way through the door, “You know you can trust me, right? Will you just tell me?!”
Mel finally snapped, “Maybe I’m not telling you because I realized it was none of your damn business!”
Jadien blinked, “What?”
Mel huffed, “You’re always so nosy, Jay, maybe I finally realized I don’t have to tell you shit. Maybe I finally realized my little sibling is just…just a pathetic nosy crybaby I have to take care of because I promised mom!”
Jadien growled, “Oh like you’re so much better. You’re always up in my business! Telling me to think things through more, listen more, ‘don’t be so impulsive, Jay’, oh give me a break.”
Mel’s eyes narrowed, “Because you should. You’re just a kid, Jay, that’s all you are. A stupid kid who I should’ve left back in the city when I had the chance!”
Jaiden froze, “...what?”
Mel started pacing, moving his hands in the air as he did, “I didn’t have to bring you, Jaiden. I only did because mom made me promise I wouldn’t leave you alone in the city. I’ve been nice for so long just because I’ve had to. I was the one who got grandpa’s letter. I’m the one who owns this stars forsaken house. I’m the one with the deed to the farm. It was just going to be me and Avery, and you know what, it would’ve been fantastic!”
Jaiden dug their nails into their palms, “You…you don’t mean that…”
Mel rolled his eyes and walked off, “Grow up, Jaiden.” Jaiden sank to the floor, head buried in their arms. Avery, who’d heard the argument, came to check on Jaiden.
He sat down and rested a hand on Jaiden’s back, “Jay…he’s just mad, he didn’t mean any of that.”
Jaiden looked up at Avery, eyes glassy, “D-did…I-I thought grandpa gave it to all of us…”
Avery gently brushed tears off Jaiden’s cheek, “Yeah, he did. Mel’s just angry because you pushed. He didn’t mean any of that. I’m sure he’ll be guilt cooking in the morning.”
Jaiden leaned on Avery, “I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to make him so mad, I just wanted him to treat me like I’m not a kid.”
Avery gently rubbed Jaiden’s back, “Shhh, I know. C’mon, let’s go into your room. Do you want me to read to you so you can relax?”
Jaiden shook their head, “I’ll be ok…thanks, Ave.”
Avery sighed, “Yeah…night, Jay.”
The next morning Mel still refused to Jaiden. Jaiden tried multiple times to talk to Mel but received no answer. Avery got sick of it that night after Mel refused to respond when Jaiden asked about dishes.
Avery growled and slammed his hands down on the table, “Will you just stop!”
Both Jaiden and Mel looked up.
Mel narrowed his eyes, “Avery, really? At the table?”
Avery huffed, “You know that fight last night was your fault, Mel. You know it was. Jaiden, you’re right, we have been treating you like a kid and I’m sorry for that. Mel, you had no right to lash out like that at Jaiden just because you were annoyed they pushed you.”
Jaiden blinked, “Ave, you ok?”
Avery sighed and managed to reign in his temper some, “Sorry, just…why now? Things were going so well. I was the one who wasn’t able to hold it together so why now? You two have been getting along better than ever here…what happened, guys?”
Mel looked around, “Ave…I’m sorry, I…mm…I shouldn’t have snapped like that.”
Jaiden shifted uncomfortably, “I’m sorry too, even if I was mad I didn’t have to yell at you, Mel. I was trying to apologize all day.”
Mel just looked away, “That’s why I was ignoring you. I’m…I’m going to bed.”
Avery grabbed Mel’s arm, “Oh no you’re not. We need to tell them.”
Mel tried pulling away, “Can’t it wait?”
Avery glowered, “You know it can’t.”
Mel sighed and sat back down, “Jay, we need to talk. Someone…reached out to us recently.”
Jaiden perked up a bit, “Who?”
Mel looked at Avery then back at Jaiden, “Avery and I’s aunt. Our father’s sister.”

Chapter Text
Mel pulled a letter nearly identical to Avery’s from his pocket. He slid it across the table to Jaiden, “She says she learned about us a few years ago and found out we moved to Stardew. She wants to meet us.”
Jaiden looked up, “Hold on, your father’s sister wants to meet us? Like all of us?”
Avery cringed and glanced at Mel, “Uh, not quite. She wants to meet Mel and I. But, we wanted your opinion before making any decisions. You’d be ok on your own, right?”
Jaiden sighed and wrapped their arms around their torso, “I…when?”
Avery reached across the table and grabbed Jaiden’s hand, “A few days after your birthday. She says it can wait until after because she wouldn’t want to separate us on your day. She seems nice. She says maybe after she can meet you.”
Jaiden flinched away from Avery, “Please, don’t touch right now. Feeling a bit overwhelmed. Anyway, I’m looking through it and why does she call me your ‘friend’?”
Mel put his head in his hands, “She has been doing that in text too. She refuses to believe we’re related because we don’t share 100% of our parental DNA. She calls you our roommate or friend because she doesn’t want to admit our father had us out of wedlock.”
Jaiden held themselves a little tighter, “I see…is she gonna offer to move you in with her?”
Mel nodded and handed Jaiden his phone, “Mhm, and…we might take her up on it. I mean, you could always use your own space, right?”
Jaiden tried to hide the way their teeth ground in frustration, hid the pain in their voice, choking back waves of emotion, “Oh, that’s…that’s really great, Mel. That’s fantastic. You’ll love it.”
Avery looked between Mel and Jaiden, “You’d really be ok with that?”
Jaiden just nodded, face glued to the table, “Excuse me.”
Of course they weren’t ok with that! Mel and Avery had never been away from them before, why now? Jaiden just wanted to cry. No, no they weren’t a weak baby, they couldn’t. They shook it off, it was fine, they’d just have to learn to cope with it. They could live on their own, its surely not that hard. I mean they were in college before working for Joja and they had a roommate who was never home. That was virtually the same, right? Besides, they had the town, and Midnight, and Darrell. They’d be fine alone.
Their chest ached as Avery knocked on the door. Avery’s knock was always gentle when Jaiden was upset, “Jay? Can I come in?”
Jaiden looked up, “S-sure.” They quietly cursed at sounding so fragile.
Avery pushed the door open, “Hey, you know it’s not immediate right? I mean there’s a few weeks until your birthday and even then we’re just gonna be visiting. We’re not even sure we want to move in right now. Or at all. So don’t worry, ok? We’re not leaving yet.”
Jaiden leaned into Avery as he hugged them, burying their face in his shirt, “Ok.”
Avery sighed and held Jaiden tight, “JJ, You’ll be fine. C’mon, let’s go star gazing while Mel takes care of dishes. Maru should let us borrow her telescope I think.”
Jaiden rubbed away invisible tears, “Ok.”
Jaiden held Midnight to their chest as they watched the stars with Avery. Avery pointed at a small dot in the sky, “That right there, it looks like nothing, but that’s the moon.”
Jaiden snickered a bit, “Ave, I’m not 4.”
Avery smiled softly as he turned to Jaiden, “I know, but talking about the stars and sky calms me.”
Jaiden snuggled against Avery’s chest. Midnight curled up on Jaiden’s chest, head on Avery’s stomach. Avery quickly found himself pinned under a cat and her owner.
Avery sighed fondly, “Sleep tight, Jay.”
Mel came out a bit later, sitting down next to Avery, “I’m nervous, for once.”
Avery was laid back on the dirt, hands behind his head as a cushion, “Why?”
Mel shrugged and leaned back, “I don’t know, I guess I’m just worried if she’ll even like us. What if she’s just doing this to get us back with dad?”
Avery kept his gaze on the sky, “Well, we’ll tell her we’re adults and can make our own choices. I don’t think she will, though. I mean, we don’t know our dad at all. I know mom hates him for what he did but nonetheless.”
Mel sighed and gingerly peeled Jaiden and Midnight off Avery, “Fair but still, you really think Jay will be fine alone?”
Avery shook his head, “Fine, no. But they’ll adapt.”
Mel huffed, “I guess that’s true. One day we’ll look back on this and laugh at such a silly choice thinking the right answer was obvious all along.”
Avery was taken aback, “You think leaving our sibling to care for an enormous farm alone is the right choice?”
Mel thought a moment, “I didn’t say that, but yes. I think it will be.”
“Will?! What do you mean, will?”
“Well, we’re going to move in with her aren’t we?”
“We haven’t decided that! What about rent! We don’t have jobs!”
“We can get ones.”
“How?! Joja owns half the city and we’re practically blacklisted because we supply Luci!”
“We can stay with her until we find jobs.”
“Will she let us?”
“I don’t know.”
“See, Mel, this is where this goes. You think way too far ahead and don’t see the actual step by step.”
“I do, Avery. I always do. Am I just not allowed to fantasize a little?”
“Not when it comes to leaving Grandpa’s farm! Jaiden can’t take care of everything alone! That’s like asking a CEO to do everyone’s jobs all at once!”
“If they’re the CEO they should be capable of that.”
“Not my point. Jaiden isn’t an octopus, they can’t be everything and everyone at once, Mel.”
Jaiden started to stir a bit, causing Mel and Avery to wince.
Avery stood up and scooped up Jaiden, “I’m taking Jaiden to bed. Stay here if you want. Goodnight, Mel.”
Mel sighed and looked at the ground, “One day you’ll see, Avery. One day.”
Notes:
Adding this note later because I forgot to mention, I got a chest binder! As most of y’all know, I’m afab non-binary and up until like 2 days ago I thought I didn’t have a lot of dysphoria…THAT WAS WRONG. I’m very good at repressing emotion, so after crying for half an hour straight and missing school because I was already fragile and if someone deadnamed or misgendered me I’d blow, my mom bought me a binder online. It just got here today and I love it. It’s comfy and nice so just wanted to share smth happy bc I am so happy I finally got something like this.

Woo! Sorry, I know I said I’d work on EPIC some more but I’m feeling really motivated for Stardew lately. I’m taking a short break from EPIC for a while until I feel like I’m ready to start again. I do have Ruthlessness written though so lemme know if you want me to post it or wait until I can put out more chapters all at once.

Chapter Text
Jaiden slept in late the next morning. Or…attempted to. In reality they were up at 5. They watered a few plants and fed the animals, they sighed and laid down in the center of the farm. They’d be just fine on their own, they didn’t need Avery or Mel. They drifted off, eyes fluttering closed.
The dream was…odd, to say the least.
They looked around a dark void, “Hello?”
No answer. They shuddered, how was a void cold? Wasn’t it supposed to have no sensation?
They wandered more, looking around, “Hellooo?” Still nothing.
After a bit of wandering, they found a small puddle of water. They bent down and poked at it, watching the way it rippled outwards. It seemed like an ordinary puddle, but it held more color than what was in the void. Jaiden seemed almost drowned out in the reflection. Their purple jacket fading away in the bright flower field in the puddle. Weird. They chose to ignore it, exploring some more. They felt something wet on their face, that was even-
“Jaiden!”
Jaiden shot up, panting as they were startled awake. Mel was standing over them with a watering can in hand, smirking. Jaiden wanted to punch him. Jaiden, who had very easy reach, sweeped their leg around back of Mel’s, causing him to fall.
Mel huffed, “What was that for?”
Jaiden hummed, “Payback.”
Jaiden’s gaze lingered a bit too long on that heart shaped charm hanging off Mel’s bracelet. They took a deep breath, getting up and walking off. Jaiden tried to dull the immense abandonment they felt. They hadn’t been sleeping much since learning about Mel and Avery’s trip. Mostly staying up late pressed against the wall to listen to the two talk.
Jaiden hadn’t noticed how far they’d gotten until they looked up. How did they get here? They looked around, blinking. How and when did they get all the way to Cindersap? They saw a large log in front, blocking their path. They smirked, well, this was one way to get out some anger. They raised their gold axe high, letting it glint in the sun. As they brought it down, it snapped in two. Granting Jaiden passage. They paused, looted it for hardwood, and kept on. It was…breathtaking. A whole other forest. They felt a little awkward at home, so maybe sleeping here and doing some camping would clear their head.
As soon as the tent was set up, they heard the familiar squishing sounds that indicated a slime was close. They drew their sword, holding it steady. They looked around, scanning. As soon as they found the slime, they lunged, cutting it clean in half. They smirked before packing up. if there were slimes here it definitely wasn't safe to stay. They took their things to the community center and set up there. A few of the Junimos gathered at their feet.
Jaiden giggled and sat down, "Hey, I thought you were normally shy."
They picked up a particularly small one, holding it close. They set up a sleeping bag inside the restored craft room.
After curling up, they looked at the Junimos one more time, "Night."
The next morning when Avery got up the first thing he did was look into Jaiden's room. Nothing. Where were they? He searched around for a while, they weren't on the farm or near the house. This was getting ridiculous. After a bit more searching in Cindersap, Avery figured it was time to enlist some help.
He went to the wizard tower in Cindersap and knocked on the door, "Moss?"
Moss stuck his head out, "Looking for Jaiden?"
Avery nodded, "You've seen him?"
Moss nodded, "Community center. Drink this, don't be surprised by what's in there."
Avery blinked confusedly but drank the green sludge. He gagged as he swallowed. It tasted like tree bark, grass, leaves, and death. Mostly death. He felt like he was gonna puke, but just as soon as it started it was gone.
Moss took the cup back, "Jaiden will fill you in later on, I'm sure."
Avery just blinked. He shook it off and turned around. He made it to the community center and just before he opened the door, he sucked in a breath. He held it as he entered.
Avery gasped, "What the-"
Jaiden pressed his hands over Avery's mouth, "Shh! They'll get scared."
Avery looked around before pushing Jaiden's hands down, "Who?"
Jaiden moved away from Avery's view, "Them."
The small apple-shaped creatures huddled together behind Jaiden.
Avery pointed at the things, "What are those?"
Jaiden glared, "Shh, like I said, you're scaring them. C'mon little ones, it's ok. Umm…alright, Avery, these are the Junimos. Junimos, this is my big brother, Avery. I was telling you about him last night."
Avery kneeled down, "Hey, I'm not gonna hurt you. Is this what you were keeping from me?"
Jaiden nodded, "Yeah…in my defense, Mel doesn't know either."
Avery sighed in relief, "Sorry, you know I'm just on edge after…Stella."
Jaiden blinked in shock, Avery hadn't mentioned Stella's name in the months since they'd moved here.
Jaiden gently reached for Avery's hand, "I wouldn't do that, ok? I promised, remember? Whenever I'm in danger that I can't handle, I'll call you. But I can handle this. The Junimos are real nice. I fixed up a few rooms already. That's why we have Junimo cart back and the greenhouse. After I gave the Junimos those gifts, they fixed those places up for us."
Avery hugged Jaiden, "I know you wouldn't keep stuff from me. Especially not something like that. But you know I worry. That greenhouse is quite handy, though. I like these little critters."
Jaiden looked at the floor, "Are you really considering moving in with your aunt?"
Avery sighed, "Mel is. But, hey, look at me, if we go you're coming too. Ok?"
Jaiden shook his head, "I like the valley. I have friends here. I don't wanna leave. And I don't want you two to leave."
Avery squeezed Jaiden's shoulder, "I know, Jay. But, our minds aren't made up just yet. So, it's not definite. Ok?"
Jaiden sighed and hugged Avery again, "Alright. Do you want me to show the rooms the Junimos fixed up?"
Notes:
Who’s Stella? I hear you ask. Well, that, my friend, is an excellent question. Wait for a moment.
Chapter Text
Jaiden stretched, the sun was nice as it streamed through the window. They looked at the calendar, 4 days until their birthday, and 7 until Avery and Mel went to see their aunt. Jaiden sighed and got up. They got dressed in their favorite purple jacket, a loose t-shirt, and loose sweat pants. Next they tied on their rubber boots, those we're important for working on the farm. They grabbed their sword and left the house. Mel had already taken care of the crops while Avery was chasing down Darrell who'd gotten out of the coop. Jaiden gave a sharp whistle, Midnight coming over to them.
Jaiden knelt and gave the cat scratches under her chin, "Good morning, Midnight." As they pet the cat, Avery came over, holding a squawking Darrell in his arms.
Avery sighed, "Morning, Jay. Someone got out this morning and I nearly hit her with a scythe."
Jaiden looked up from petting Midnight, "Yep, that sounds like Darrell."
Avery made a motion for Jaiden to follow him. He set Darrell in the chicken pen and turned to Jaiden, "You sure you're gonna be alright on your own?"
Jaiden rolled their eyes, "I survived when you and Mel went to Zuzu for a few days, I'll be fine, Ave. I promise. Just…please come visit, ok? Midnight will miss you."
Avery nodded, resting a hand on Jaiden's shoulder, "It's not official yet, Jay. If we do move, I'll make sure we visit you as often as we can. I'll write every week. Sound good?"
Jaiden shrugged, "What sounds good is you not moving at all. But…I guess it's alright. So, am I allowed to know what I'm getting for my birthday?"
Avery laughed and playfully shoved Jaiden, "If you keep being nosy like that, it'll be a farm duty all day. "
Jaiden huffed, "So mean to me. Your baby sibling. I'm so wounded, Avery."
Avery rolled his eyes and flicked Jaiden, "You're just a big baby. Alright, you better get going, though. At this rate I'll have to come fish you out of the mines."
Jaiden stuck out their tongue but nodded and started off to the mines. Mel walked over to Avery, "You still haven't told them?"
Avery looked at the ground, "I don't want to. It's right before their birthday, Mel. We can tell them after. You know what happened when we told them we were considering it. What happens when they find out we decided."
Mel shrugged, "Not a clue. But Avery, they're an adult. They'll be fine on their own. You know that, right?"
Avery turned away, "But I don't. What if something happens and we're not there to help? What if they get hurt in the mines and can't get home? What if-"
"Ave, that's enough, you're spiraling. Look at me. They'll be alright on their own. Aunt Miriam wants us there, ok? They'll be alright on their own for a while," Mel's grip was tight on Avery's shoulders.
Avery wiped his eyes, "I guess I'm just worried. They've never really lived alone before. We've never lived alone before. How do we know they'll be alright?"
Mel gestured to the farm, town, and forest, "They have friends here, Avery. People who will take care of them when we leave. It's going to be fine. And we're telling them at dinner tonight. Understand?"
Avery nodded, "I…yeah, ok."
That night was Jaiden's night to cook. Though Mel and Avery had offered to let them have a break, Jaiden wasn't hearing it. They got home early and started on dinner. They chose to make something special that they didn't make often. Back in the city, they typically ordered pizza. However, for birthdays and such, Jaiden would make it by hand. Everything from the dough to the sauce and hand shredding the cheese. Jaiden was doing so now, too. They had their hair tied back, laser focused on cooking.
An hour later, it was served, Jaiden getting the satisfaction of knowing Mel would have to clean up the dishes later. Jaiden was enjoying a slice when Mel and Avery gave them a serious look.
Jaiden glanced around, adjusting their glasses, "What? Did I do something?"
Mel shook his head, "No, but do you remember how Avery and I's aunt, Miriam, reached out a while ago? Well…we made up our minds. We're moving in with her."
Jaiden paused, "How long?"
Mel looked at the calendar, "We're going to come back after our trip to see her and start pack-"
"No, Mel, you misunderstood me. How long have you decided this?" Jaiden's voice was like a knife cutting through the air.
Barely disguised fury and a tinge of sadness coated thickened the tension in the room. Avery had expected sadness, but not this much anger.
He grabbed Jaiden's hand, "Jay-"
Jaiden tugged it back, "How long?! Not just that, but why wasn't I involved? You two can't just make choices that effect me without me! That's not fair! So how long have you known you'd do this, huh?"
Avery and Mel exchanged a tense glance, "Since we opened the letters, really."
Jaiden huffed, "We've been here for one season and you two already wanna bail? Unbelievable. You barely even know the place? How do you know you prefer the city over the valley? Or is it that you just wanna ditch me. I bet it's the latter."
Avery tried to calm Jaiden again, "Jay, we'd never wanna hurt-"
"Save it. I don't care anymore. Leave tomorrow for all I care. I'm going to bed," Jaiden stormed off, leaving on the slam of a door.
Avery pursed his lips, melting into a chair, "I was worried this would happen."
Mel shrugged, "Now they know. And I suppose know they're not going to speak to us again."
Avery started trying to head to Jaiden's room, being stopped by Mel, "What?"
Mel shook his head, "Let them be. They'll come to their senses. It'll be alright."
Jaiden was curled up in a corner of their room. They were reading a book about monster types to calm themself down. They ended up staying up until two to finish it. Jaiden sighed as they glanced at the clock. Well, at least they'd done some research. They put the book up and flopped onto their bed.

Chapter Text
Jaiden was staring at the sunset. She'd managed to find a way to get up onto the roof to see it. She let the wind rush through her hair, soft breeze blowing around her curls. Jaiden sighed, seeing Avery pack for the trip was rough, seeing Mel do it so brazenly was worse. She slid down the tiles and safely onto the ground. She walked to the greenhouse, checking each sprinkler before heading to the chicken coop. They'd gotten a new addition recently. Her name, the three had decided, was Atlas. So now there was Atlas and Darrell. Initially they were going to name her Harmonia after their grandfather. But that was decided against. So they went with Atlas. Which was the name Natalie and Mel and Avery's dad had initially chosen for Avery. However, after their breakup shortly before the twins were born, she chose Avery. Avery was only mildly upset at this fact.
Jaiden stared at the clock in their room. Avery knocked again, "Jay? I know you're upset, but it's your birthday. Don't you wanna come celebrate?"
Jaiden did not in fact want to celebrate. What was the point when Mel and Avery were just going to leave in a few days? Still, they supposed they'd play nice, just this once. Besides, it'd be nice to guilt trip Mel. Jaiden went to the kitchen where Avery had made breakfast. Omlettes, Jaiden's favorite breakfast food. Oh…it was going to be that kind of a birthday. The kind where every action just reeked of, "Sorry we screwed up!" Jaiden had been privy to those a long time ago. Two could play at that game.
The whole day, Jaiden acted as though the day were perfect for no reason. Ignoring the tense smile on Avery's face. The light eye roll Mel gave each time Avery added a little extra magic. The way Avery seemed distracted at the library.
Finally, at dinner that night, Jaiden set down their glass of champagne, "Alright, I know you feel guilty about leaving, Avery."
Avery blinked, "What?"
Jaiden sighed, "I can tell. Your smile won't reach your eyes. You've been tense and distracted. You've nudged Mel more for making comments. You're guilty."
Avery glanced at the floor, "Partly, I suppose. But I did really want you to have a great day."
"To make up for the awful one I'll have in three," Jaiden added.
Mel sighed, "Avery, I told you this wasn't going to work. I told you they'd see right through it."
Avery tried to argue, but Jaiden stopped him, "Nope, don't even. I'm heading home, you two can do whatever."
Jaiden got up from the table, starting the walk from the saloon home. It wasn't like they hated the day, the library and everything was nice. It was all tainted by Mel and Avery trying to compensate for leaving.
Mel pinched the bridge of his nose, "Let's get going too."
He gathered up all the plates on the table.
He set them on the counter and called out, "Emily, we're heading out for the night, here's these."
Emily nodded, "Thanks. I'll be sure to let Mori know you three left. Have a good night!"
Avery walked slow, trying to give Jaiden some time alone. Avery was lost in his own world. Gazing off into space as walked.
Mel turned to Avery, "Having second thoughts?"
Avery shrugged, "I really don't think we should leave Jay alone."
Mel shook his head, "Jaiden might act like a child, but they certainly aren't one."
Avery crossed his arms, "They certainly do not. They don't act like a kid, Mel."
Mel cocked his eyebrow, "You are focusing on the wrong part. The point is, Avery, I think Jaiden will be fine."
A few days later, Jaiden watched from the window as Mel and Avery took their suitcases. Jaiden kept their door locked, not wanting any contact with either. They heard a knock but ignored it. Burying themself in a book.
Avery sighed as the door remained shut. Locked tight by the owner inside.
Avery shook his head and knocked quietly on the door, "Jay, Mel and I are leaving. We'll be back in a few days. Love you."
Nothing. Well, he tried. Despite Mel seeming so set on moving in with this mysterious aunt, Avery wasn't sure. Firstly, he enjoyed the quiet life of the valley. Secondly, the city contained nothing but bad memories for him. The tiny apartment after college that hardly had enough room for the three of them. Stella. Joja. That dead end job that made him want to tear out his eyes. It held nothing worth going back to.
Mel popped back into the house, "Avery, we gotta go. The bus is gonna be here in five minutes."
Avery nodded and started heading out the door, "Yeah, ok. Jaiden's not answering their door. It's got me worried."
Mel rolled his eyes, "Well, we have bigger things to worry about. Come on."
Avery stole a final glance at the home they'd be leaving for the next week and a half. He walked out the door, picking up the suitcase he'd left on the porch.
The bus ride was a long trip. Roughly four hours. Mel fell asleep on Avery's shoulder after one. Avery reached over and wiped away some drool. When they finally reached the city, it wasn't like Avery was expecting. It was smaller. Not as small as Pelican Town or as large as Zuzu city. It was much better than Avery was anticipating. Avery spotted the woman they were meeting.
Miriam was shorter than Avery was anticipating. He'd always assumed he'd gotten his height from his dad. Though this explained why Jaiden ended up the tallest of the siblings.
Miriam smiled, "Oh I've been waiting so eagerly for you two! It's so good to finally see both of you in person. Goodness, Mel, you look just like your father."
Mel's cheeks tinged pink, "Really? I was always told I look like my mom."
Miriam studied Mel's face and shook her head, "Nope, you have all the facial features your dad does. Avery, good to see you got your mom's height. Your father always was the shorter of me and him. You didn't bring Jaiden, right?"
Avery shifted uncomfortably, "No. Did you want us to?"
Miriam shrugged, "Ultimately it was your decision. But they're not family so I'm glad you didn't."
Avery's brow furrowed, "Now hold on a momen-"
Mel sharply elbowed his brother, "Shut it, Avery. Not the time."
Avery grumbled but stayed otherwise silent. Letting Mel and Miriam do all the talking. Avery sighed and followed as she led them to her car. As soon as they arrived at her house, swaths of people approached. Each baring slight resemblance to each other.
Miriam smiled bright, "Mel, Avery, meet your family."
Avery felt a knot in his stomach grow ever tighter as he glanced around. This was gonna be a weird week.
Notes:
Jaiden is pissed as hell. Also, Avery was under the impression he'd just be meeting Miriam, not his dad's entire side of the family. He didn't even know they lived in the same town as her. Mel anticipated this, dare I say he hoped for it. Curiosity killed the cat type thing. I think from here on out I'm gonna make chapter POVs swap between Jaiden and the twins as long as the twins are gone for.
Oh btw, I'm going to make another au after I wrap up EPIC and Stardew based extremely roughly off the song End-World Normapthy by Ghost and Pals. I yapped about it on Tumblr but the general summary is that Heart finds out about the loops, he's not meant to know, and Soul kills him over it. But each loop, Heart finds out again and again. Now he has to keep this secret from both of his siblings, lest one inform the other. Neither Mind nor Heart are meant to know of the loops in this au. Heart finds himself thrust into both the positions of Emotion and Mediator after Soul and Mind clock the odd behavior and argue about it.

Chapter Text
Jaiden had left for the forest shortly after Avery and Mel got on the bus. They grabbed their ax tight around its handle and brought it onto the trunk of the tree. Repeating the motion until it fell and split into wood. They wiped away sweat and started off to another tree. Taking out all their anger on each piece of wood. A few trees later, Jaiden laid down on the grass, backpack full of wood. They sighed and stared at the sky. They fended off the tears threatening to form. They refused to acknowledge how their chest squeezed in pain. Pushing down anything else, channeling the pain and sadness into anger and strength. Jaiden forced themself up and hacked away at some more trees before setting their sights on a log blocking off part of the forest. They held the ax tight and brought it down on the large log repeatedly until the wood splintered apart. They heard slow clapping from behind them.
Moss smiled, "Found the hidden forest, I see."
Jaiden shrugged, "Yeah, well, just blowing off steam."
Moss blinked, "Ah, Mel and Avery took their trip right?"
Jaiden wiped their face, "Mhm. Avery's been babying me for the last few weeks since they told me. So I'm going to work hard to show them I'm no baby."
Moss studied their face more, "Well, alright I suppose. I won't push you if you don't want to talk. Make sure to take a break, ok?"
Jaiden nodded, "Mhm."
Avery was overwhelmed to say the least. His head was spinning as another cousin he had no knowledge of introduced herself to him. Avery had to sit down. At least Mel was adapting alright. Jaiden would've done well here. They might've been an introvert, but were always quite good at social situations. Avery spotted a man sitting by himself. All alone in the corner of the room. He got up and walked over, sitting beside the man.
Avery smiled, "Hi. So uh, how are we related."
The man looked up, and all at once Avery saw Mel's eyes staring back, "Avery?"
Avery nodded, "Uh, yep. That's me. You look like my twin."
The man laughed, "Well, that makes a lot of sense. He's my kid after all."
Avery blinked, "What?"
The man smiled, "I'm Ryan. Your father. I'm glad to finally meet you. Last I saw, you were just a tiny little grain of rice in your mom's stomach."
Avery just stared in disbelief, "Sorry, I don't think I understand, you're my father. As in the one who was with my mom?"
Ryan nodded, "That's right. I'm your dad."
Avery's face tightened, "Right….my dad."
Mel walked over upon seeing Avery, "Ave, who's this?"
Avery's face was still hard and unforgiving, "Our father."
Ryan patted Avery's hand, "Just call me dad, kiddo."
Neither Mel nor Avery had as good a handle on emotion as Jaiden did. Both, however, did know that something was making them very unhappy. That something was likely Ryan.
Avery tugged his hand away, "Please don't call me that. I'm not a kid anymore."
Mel bitterly tacked on, "You would have known that if you had chosen to stay in our lives."
Miriam came over quickly, "Ah! Mel! Avery! There you both are. Oh! Ryan I told you to stay away from the boys until it was time to introduce them! You ruined the surprise."
Mel turned to Miriam, "Sorry, you invited him here, on purpose?"
Miriam nodded, "I wanted to introduce you to your family. Your real family. Not your step father or Jaiden. That includes your real father."
Avery felt his head spin more than it already was, "I'm…going to go lay down, I don't feel very good."
Miriam frowned and pressed the back of her hand to Avery's forehead just like how Natalie used to.
Avery flinched at the sudden touch, "I'm alright, auntie. Just need some rest. Mel, will you come with me?"
Mel nodded, "I think we have things to talk about."
Avery and Mel made it to the room Miriam set aside for Avery. They sat there in silence for a while. Neither daring to speak.
Avery let out a shaky breath, "She wants to replace dad and Jaiden. Just because we don't share complete DNA with them."
Mel thought a moment, "Maybe this is a good thing, you know? Maybe we really do need to be with…with…"
Avery clenched his fist tight, "With our what, Mel. Say it."
Mel looked into Avery's eyes, "With our real family. Maybe it's good for us."
Avery dug his nails into his palm, "What about Jaiden? What about mom? We don't share DNA with dad but we still call him that. Ryan, that man down there, he's done nothing to earn that title, Mel. We both know blood doesn't make family."
Jaiden curled up into bed with Midnight in their lap and a good book. They quickly changed their mind upon remembering that The Queen of Sauce was on that night. Mel felt around for a remote and clicked it on. They pulled out a notebook and wrote down each detail she mentioned for the day's recipe. It was an episode on Maki Roll. Jaiden made a mental note to go fishing in the morning to get ingredients for the recipe.
The next morning after some fishing and popping by the saloon before it opened for a quick cooking lesson from Mori, Jaiden headed to the mines. After three days without Mel and Avery, Jaiden was feeling less upset and was preforming tasks normally. Sure, they missed Mel and Avery, but it wasn't as large of a concern.
Mornings were spent caring for the animals and greenhouse. Occasianally going into town for seeds and such. Mostly, the day was spent doing varying tasks. It was night six of Mel and Avery being away. Jaiden finally called up his siblings.
Jaiden smiled as he called Mel and Avery, "Hi guys."
Avery waved, "Hey, Jay. How's home?"
Jaiden shrugged, "It's alright. Same as always. How's Aunt Mir's?"
Mel glanced at the door, "Well, it's fine. Aunt Miriam is…odd. We met our father. He's named Ryan."
Avery took the phone, "She's like super obsessed with our 'real' family. How are my babies?"
Jaiden laughed a bit, "Tucked up safe in the coop. Speaking of, it's late and I just called to say good night. Love you guys, night."
Avery sighed and pressed the end call button, "Night, Jay."
Notes:
Mel try to admit he’s wrong challenge: level impossible. Also, I got exciting news! I got my cast off and I have my driver’s license! I’m doing alright. I know I said I wouldn’t start another new fic but I already have 4 and 1/2 chapters written of one that I plan to post later lol.
Chapter Text
Avery sat there, mind drifting off into space. Two days felt like an eternity. He missed Jaiden, he didn't like it here, he just wanted to go home. Still, that was a week away. Mel didn't seem to be enjoying it either. They seemed stressed.
Avery walked up to Mel and tapped their shoulder, "You ok?"
Mel jumped and yelped, "Oh…yeah I'm okay."
Avery raised and eyebrow, "People who are okay don't scream when they're tapped."
Mel rolled their eyes, "Oh for goodness sake Avery you startled me. That's not a measure if I'm okay or not."
Avery blinked at Mel's hostility, "What is going on with you?"
Mel shrugged, "I feel like I've been more on edge here. I'm not sure why. I fell like the more I'm around father's side of the family the more anxious I am."
Avery nodded, "I get it. Mom always told us he was, well, eccentric to say the least."
Mel deadpanned, "Mom told us he was abusive, Avery. And controlling."
Avery blinked as his phone rang, "Hello? Woah, Jaiden calm down what's going on? Jay, Jay, breathe you're okay."
Mel's expression shifted to one of worry, "Is that Jaiden? What's wrong?"
Avery placed a hand over the mic, "Jay's a bit…frazzled. He won't tell me why though."
Mel took the phone, "Jaiden, it's Mel. Where are you?"
Jaiden took a deep breath, "At home."
Mel nodded, "Okay, are you hurt? Can you tell us what happened?"
Jaiden shakily sat down, "I…it…how am I gonna explain this."
Mel worriedly looked up at Avery who merely shrugged, "Jaiden, did something happen? If it did you should go get someone from in town. Wick knows how to fire a gun right? See if he'll help you."
Jaiden shook his head, "No, no, it's not that. This is going to sound crazy but, I swear I saw grandpa in my dream last night. It just has me really shaken."
Mel blinked, "What? You're scared…because you saw grandpa…in a dream? Are you serious right now! You got me and Avery all worried over a damn dream!"
Avery quickly took the phone back, "Jay, it's Avery. Look, I'm not exactly pleased you got us all worried over a dream. But I do know you needed comfort. Are you feeling better?"
Jaiden sighed, "Yeah, thanks."
Avery nodded, "Alright. Love you Jay."
Jaiden curled up tighter on his bed, "Love you Avery."
Avery sighed as he hung up, shutting his phone, "Well, at least we know he's okay."
Mel huffed, "Why does he like to scare us like that?"
Avery shrugged, "Not sure. C'mon, pretty sure Aunt Miriam said she wanted to show us the store father runs."
Mel paused, "Actually, I'm going to the town library. I don't wanna interact with either of them today."
Avery rested a hand on Mel's shoulder, "Finally ready to admit this idea was dumb?"
Mel glared, "No, of course not. It has been…informative."
Avery snorted, "Yeah, okay idiot."
Jaiden stared at the ceiling. His muscles ached from the previous day's activities. He'd chopped some trees in the morning and was last minute informed of the town potluck on the beach. That was today. He forced himself up and rifled through the cabinets to find a worthy ingredient. He found some wine, suddenly remembering the wine Avery had been making before leaving. He dashed to check the kegs Avery kept in the back of the house. Sure enough, one was finished. Jaiden grabbed the wine bottle and hurried to the beach. He paled upon realizing the governor was there. Thankfully, he was chatting with Rose. Mori was stirring the almost comically large pot of soup.
Jaiden held up the wine, "Hey Mori! I brought something!"
Mori smiled, "Bring it around back, Jay."
Jaiden handed it to him, "This place is nice. You guys dressed it well."
Mori grinned, "You bet we did. Me, Forest, and Charlotte decorated this morning. 20 came out to help nail some things down."
Jaiden nodded, "Speaking of, have you seen Moss?"
Mori sighed and shook his head, "Moss isn't one to come to these things. Likes being mysterious I suppose."
Jaiden frowned, "Oh."
Mori ruffled his hair, "It's alright Jay Jay. You've got me."
Jaiden smiled, "Fair. I'm gonna go hang with Lucifer and Abigail."
Mori nodded, "Alright."
The Luau was in full swing. People were dancing and chatting. The governor looked pleased as Rose went around to everyone asking about their ingredients. When the two got to Jaiden, he smiled.
Rose smiled back at Jaiden, "Hey, Jay. So, what'd you bring?"
Jaiden held up a wine bottle, "Avery started a keg of the stuff a month ago and it finished this morning. Still a bit left, want some?"
The govonor shook his head, "No thank you, the missus would have my head."
Rose nodded, "I'll take a little, not much though."
When Mori announced the soup was finished, everyone got a bowl. It was delicious, the governor declared so himself. At home, Jaiden curled up with Midnight in his lap and Livn' Off the Land on the TV. He gave her gentle pets and scratches behind her ears. He watched as the old man in the show hammered in fences.
The next morning, Jaiden got up and grabbed some hardwood. They carefully cut the pieces into the shape of a fence, repeating that a few different times. Next, they took the fences out to the farm, hammering them in around the chicken coop. Jaiden smiled as a feeling of completion settled in their chest. Callouses had been forming on their hands for a month but that just meant Jaiden had been working hard. They opened up the chicken hatch for the coop, "There you go, Darrell. C'mon, Atlas, come on out buddy." As both got out of the coop, Jaiden left the door open for them. Jaiden sighed and climbed up onto the coop, watching the sunrise. Jaiden stretched and slid down from the roof.

Chapter Text
Avery was glad to finally be leaving. He packed with purpose and he and Mel got up early to catch the bus. Miriam and Ryan walked with them to the bus. Avery dodged hugs from both, Mel merely putting up with it. Mel clearly was uncomfortable with Ryan hugging him. Mel shivered, squeezing his eyes shut. Avery knew the feeling. Mel had never liked hugs, he'd only tolerated them from Avery, Jaiden, and Natalie. As well as the occasional one from Luke. He'd told Avery they felt like tiny needles sticking him repeatedly. Just enough to itch like hell, but not to hurt severely.
Avery cleared his throat, "Father, we need to get going."
Mel shot Avery a thankful glance and quickly detached himself from Ryan, "Yep, bus will be here soon."
Miriam sighed, "I do wish you two could stay. It'd be nice. I suppose I understand though."
Avery pulled Mel to him, away from Miriam and Ryan, "Well, maybe we can visit again. And bring Jaiden this time."
He saw both glance at each other and then back at him. Clearly uncomfortable with the possibility of Jaiden being there.
Avery sighed, "Okay, well, maybe not. But if we do visit again, it will be with Jaiden. That's nonnegotiable."
Miriam nodded, clearly unhappy with this understanding, "Right, we'll be waiting then. Call any time."
Mel nodded, half dragging Avery onto the bus, "Yeah, sure."
Avery sighed as Mel tugged, "Mel, I'm coming, just relax."
After the long journey back, Jaiden was waiting in front of the bus. He was smiling and holding a sign despite Mel and Avery being the last two people on the bus and the only two from Stardew Valley.
Avery hugged Jaiden, "Jay! We missed you."
Mel shrugged, "He missed you, I didn't."
Jaiden swung out a leg which connected with Mel's knee. Avery was none the wiser as he crushed Jaiden in his arms. As they walked back to the farm, Jaiden prattled on about all he'd gotten up to in the last few weeks. Mel was deep in thought about the whole trip.
Jaiden tugged Avery through the front door of the farmhouse and into his room, "I found some stuff I thought you'd like and I set it up for you. What do you think?"
Avery smiled, "It's lovely, Jay. Where'd you get fairy lights?"
Jaiden shrugged, "The Junimos. They showed me how to make them in the craft room."
Avery nodded, "Ah, I see. Mel! Come see what Jaiden did!"
Mel poked his head in, "Nice. I'm gonna go unpack."
Avery rolled his eyes, "Whatever, dude. Oh, Jay, we met our father."
Jaiden plopped down in Avery's beanbag, "How was he?"
Avery cringed, "Odd, not great honestly. I didn't like him much. But whatever. He wasn't mean or anything just really weird."
Avery had to force himself to not continue. He didn't want to mention them repeatedly saying Juno "wasn't family". He'd take that to the grave if he had to.
Late that night, Juno and Mel got into a minor argument. Just about who would do dishes. Juno argued that Mel should do them since he'd been doing them while Mel and Avery were gone. Mel argued that Juno should do them since he and Avery had just come home and needed rest.
Mel huffed, "Aunt Marien and father were right about you."
Avery froze, "Mel, don't-"
"No. What did they say about me? Tell me, Mel," Jaiden demanded.
Avery shook his head, "Mel, don't."
Jaiden huffed, "Tell me!"
Avery stood up from his chair, "Melvin, don't."
Mel shivered as Avery used his full name, but couldn't stop himself, "They were right to say you weren't our real family, Jaiden! They were right! You certainly don't act like it!"
Jaiden paused, staring at Mel, "What?"
Mel crossed his arms, "You heard me."
Jaiden felt tears dribbled down his cheek, and suddenly his body was moving faster than he could stop it. He blinked and Mel was pinned beneath him.
He had a fist wrenched back, "Take it back! Take it back Mel!"
Avery tried grabbing at Jaiden but it was useless, "Jaiden don't! He's just being an ass, you don't need to hit him!"
Jaiden wasn't listening, tears flowed freely as he held Mel down, "TELL ME YOU DIDN'T MEAN IT YOU ASSHOLE! TELL ME!"
Mel coughed, "You bitch…of course I meant it."
Jaiden let out a short growl before letting his fist finally fall.
It connected with the tile next to Mel's cheek, "TAKE IT BACK! Take it back! …please, Mel, just…please take it back."
Mel shoved Jaiden off, swiping at the blood trickling from his busted lip, "Act like a proper sibling and then I will."
Jaiden just cried on the tile. His fist dripped with blood that wasn't his own. Avery sighed, "Jay…you know he didn't-"
Jaiden got up and ran to his room before Avery could finish.
Avery watched from the floor as both of his siblings retreated to their separate rooms. He'd thought some distance might make the fighting stop or at least calm down. It seemed all it did was make it worse. It was just dishes. How did it get to this? Mel, stupid Mel's fault. No, Jaiden was the one to aggravate to violence, even if provoked. Mel, Jaiden, Mel, Jaiden, it all blended in Avery's head. Who was truly to blame?
Avery forced himself up and to his room. He could hear Jaiden trying to force himself to cry quieter in the adjacent room. Avery frowned, pausing in front of his door. He considered going in but chose not to. Jaiden just needed space…right? Avery reached his room but looked over at the door across the hall. Should he go in and yell at Mel? No, that would just make it all worse.
Jaiden angrily shoved clothes and such into a bag. He channled his hurt into rage. Punching each item as it was hastily thrown into the backpack. There was still 4 hours until the buses stopped. Sure, Louis wasn't driving anymore, but he wasn't the only bus driver. Jaiden grabbed his phone and sank to the floor, dialing the one person he knew as a safe place, "Momma?"
Mel was reading quietly. To anyone who didn't know him, it might seem like a normal way of de-stressing. To anyone who did, it was clear what was really happening. Mel seldom read for pleasure, that was more Jaiden's speed. Mel, instead, was furiously flipping the pages to an entomology book. He hated bugs, but it was the book he'd used for this since he was a kid. The first time he'd read it, he'd started flipping the pages while staring into space. Not realizing with each flip his turning grew faster and rougher. Until he looked down and half a page was missing from the book. The other half in his hand. Could he have said something different to Jaiden? Sure. But nothing could've been as effective at shutting him up.
Notes:
I LIED, also Jaiden has always been hella insecure about being not fully blood siblings. When the three were younger it wasn’t as bad and Jaiden didn’t know. But around like middle school Jaiden learned about it and Mel and Avery started getting bullied about being born from wedlock. Jaiden was bullied as well with people making all kinds of awful your mom statements. Mel and Avery knew to brush it off but it all stuck with Jaiden as he started devolving a sensitivity to being only half related to the twins. He felt guilty as though if he were related maybe they wouldn’t be bullied so much. And no teacher helped. Mel and Avery still had their dad’s last name so no one associated all three. It only got worse as they got older and especially after Mel and Avery got letters from Miriam. Thinking that if he were their full blood, he’d get one too.
Chapter 18
Summary:
Y’all get a little treat this week since I was gone for a bit. Anyway I realized I never posted this and it’s been just sitting for like a month. Oops. Enjoy
Chapter Text
Mel woke up after a long night. Later than normal. He was not exactly thrilled about the delayed routine. Still, the extra rest was nice after such a long trip. Especially after last night. Why did he say that? Why did he do that? Was he really that angry at Jaiden? And over a few dishes? Mel cursed himself internally. Although, Jaiden was being just as irrational. Mel shook it off, heading out to the kitchen. He found Avery sitting with his head in his hands.
Avery perked up at Mel's steps, "Mel?"
Mel nodded, sitting next to him, "Morning, Avery."
Avery turned to Mel, staring at him, "Jaiden left." Avery sighed, resting his head on the table, "You shouldn't have said that to him last night, Mel. That was messed up."
Mel blinked and paused before answering, "Whatever. He's an adult. Avery. He can make his own choices. If he chooses to be stupid that's on him."
Avery studied Mel's face, "You're kidding, right? Our little sibling ran away and your reaction is just 'Oh well, he's an adult'?"
Mel nodded, walked to the counter and started working on breakfast, "Of course. He is an adult after all." With each word he felt himself die a little more.
Avery was stunned, "Seriously? Mel, you need to understand how badly that hurt him."
Mel huffed, "Oh, like when you literally chased him with a knife a few months ago because he wouldn't tell you something?"
Both of them paused. Avery pushed up from the table, "I'm done with your shit. I'm going out to look for him. If you want to be a dick, fine. But I'm going to look."
Jaiden watched the trees and sky fly past. The bus had been fine enough, but he'd always hated taking the train. Something about it just irked him. Though he, Avery, and Mel hadn't taken a train to a bus, Jaiden didn't feel like riding on a bus the whole trip. He got off at the last stop and found Natalie waiting. He hugged her tight, having not told her what Mel said last night.
Natalie smiled at Jaiden, "I'm so glad you wanted to visit, I was worried once you moved to the valley you'd never miss home."
Jaiden nodded, "Mhm, just missed you and dad. Plus, Mel and Avery just got back from a trip so I figured it was my turn."
Natalie blinked, "Sorry, what? Where did they go?"
Jaiden flinched, great, now this conversation was unavoidable.
Avery held the handle of the trident tight. He'd never used one of these before. As cool as it was, it was a bit unwieldy. He didn't quite like it. Sure, it was broken which made handling it a bit better. Still, it was uncomfortable to hold. As the elevator kept lowering, Avery felt his stomach lurch. The pressure increased as he went further into the ground. Floors passed and Avery finally arrived at the last elevator stop Jaiden fixed up. Avery cringed as he saw all manner of monsters scuttling about.
He sighed and started his search, "Jaiden! Jay! Are you in here?! Jaiden?!"
When he looked all through the floor and didn't find him, Avery searched the others. He wasn't in the mines, at the farm, or the forest. He didn't want to get the town involved. They were all lovely people, but he just felt odd to do so. He knew one person he could ask and would keep it a secret though.
Avery got out of the mines and immediately headed for the library. Usually Vincent and Jas had their lesson with Penny today. He walked in and waved at Nox before sitting down across from the table Penny was at. When she let Jas and Vincent run off to read freely, he went over.
Avery took a deep breath, "Can I talk to you?"
Penny looked up at Avery, "Oh, yeah, what's up?"
Avery glanced around, "I don't really want anyone else knowing, but Jaiden's missing. Jay and Mel had a big fight last night and I think he ran off. I was just wondering if Louis had driven the bus recently at all."
Penny thought a moment, "Hmm, no, the bus he drives is still down. I keep sending Rose requests to get it fixed and Rose keeps sending them to the governor but we get denied."
Avery sighed, "That's what I was afraid of. We don't have any vehicles that would get Jaiden far enough away to be untraceable at the farm so I can only assume he took a different bus to somewhere. I'm going to call my mom later and ask if she's heard from him. Thanks Penny. let me know if you see him. Oh! Before I forget, here. I've been growing some poppies on the farm lately and I heard you liked them."
Penny smiled at Avery and took the flower, "Thanks Avery. Good luck with Jaiden."
Jaiden was siting on the couch, sipping on some tea as Natalie studied his face, "So… that's everything."
Natalie frowned, "Sweetie, you know Mel didn't mean any of that. He's always thought of you as his little sibling. Always."
Jaiden shrugged, "Doesn't make it hurt less. He knows I feel weird knowing he has an entire other family somewhere and now he knows them and probably hates me now."
Natalie squeezed Jaiden's hand, "Well, that doesn't mean you can just run away from the problem, Jay. Even if you don't have Mel, you have Avery. He cares a lot about you. In fact, you running off like this has probably scared the shit out of both of them. Even if Mel will never admit it."
Jaiden sighed, "Yeah, you're right. I guess, the whole thing got to me more than I realized."
Natalie shook her head, "Nonsense. What Mel said wasn't and isn't okay in any kind of sense. He used one of your deepest insecurities against you, Jaiden. That's not alright. I'm glad you came to me instead of lashing out though. If you'd like to stay here with me and your dad for awhile while everyone cools off, you're welcome to. But you need to promise me one thing."
Jaiden nodded, "What is it?"
Natalie grabbed Jaiden's phone from off the table, "Call your brothers and tell them you're alright. They deserve to know, Jaiden."
Jaiden took it gently, "I will. I'll be back."
Mel was sitting at the kitchen table drafting concepts for missing posters when Avery walked in. Avery seemed much more relaxed than that morning. Mel perked up, "Find him?"
Avery shook his head, "No, but he called. He's at mom and dad's. Staying there for a few days to calm down. I told Penny as well."
Mel let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, "Good. I'm glad that's all sorted."
