Where the greener grass grows

Summary:

She turned a corner and tripped over her shoelace, propping herself on one of the big red lockers with her arm. Suddenly she heard muffled snickering coming from behind her. She turned her head to see a boy. He had long hair that reached his shoulders and a set of gorgeous hazel eyes. He froze when he saw her glare of indignation.

Chapter 1: New home

Chapter Text

The soft wind wisped through Lorelei's coffee brown hair. Cars swam through her vision, becoming blurred when wet tears pricked at the corner of her lolita blue eyes. She let out a soft cry, burying her face in her hands.

“Lorelei. Quiet down.” her mother commanded. She looked at lorelei’s father, bitterly. “This is the reason we are getting rid of her. she’s too damn emotional.” she mumbled quietly.

Lorelei slowly got out of the car, wiping her eyes with the palm of her left hand and holding her suitcase in her right. Her heart was heavy. She was alone in the world now, with no one to turn to. She took a deep breath and prepared.

She opened the door to the school hesitantly, taking in the sight of her new environment. It was smaller than she thought it would be, more subdued than she expected as well. She felt an odd sense of comfort in a place she thought she’d never feel at home in. it was a school for troubled kids after all, maybe it wouldn't be that bad?

She slowly walked through the peaceful hallways, making her way to Mr. Stewart's office.

“Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, huh?” he joked, chuckling.

And that provoked her even more. Firstly, how dare he laugh at her. Lorelei didn't take it to heart though, for all she knew he could be a homeless man who hasn't eaten in weeks and was out of his mind.

She stared at him blankly, picking herself up from the floor. She pushed past him as she started walking towards Mr. Stewart's office.

“It's the other way, princess.” he called.
Lorelei groaned, turning around to walk in the correct direction.
This boy was undeniably the most aggravating person she has ever met, and they only exchanged two sentences! Maybe this school won't be as amazing as she unrealistically hoped it would be if this self-centered idiot was here.

She finally reached the principal's office, hesitantly opening the door and flinching when it creaked.

“Why, hello there! Lorelei Mathews I presume?” questioned a tall lanky man sitting at a desk in the middle of the room. His feet were carefully placed on top of the table. His brown loafers covering his dinosaur socks.

“Uhm-yes. That is me" Lorelei said, smiling awkwardly. She internally cringed at her choice of words.
She sat down on the chair in front of his desk, swiveling the chair uncomfortably.

“I’m Mr. Stewart, how are you today lorelei?” he asked. He lifted his legs off the table and placed his hands together into a fist, looking austere. Lorelei thought this was funny, since he was not a serious person. Judging by the dino socks, huge circular glasses and beaded necklace probably made by his kid, he was the opposite.

“As good as I can be” joked Lorelei, chuckling, looking away.
What does he expect after all? For her to be ecstatic that her parents hated having to take care of her so much that they got rid of her? Cause that was definitely not how she felt.

“Ah, I understand,” said Mr. Stewart, “Ms. Mathews,” he added, smirking.
Eugh boy.

He marched over to the door and held it open fondly.

“Well, are you coming or not?” he said with a teasing smile.
Lorelei slowly got out of the uncomfortable leather chair and made her way to the door. As they walked through the hallways, she gazed at everything in sight. Curiosity has always been her reasoning behind almost everything she does. She was glancing at some lockers when she felt someone staring at her, she looked behind her to see that horrible annoying boy from earlier.

“Are you a stalker or something?’ She grumbles as Mr Stewart is busy chiding some kids for smoking.

“Maybe” he said, sneering.
His honey colored eyes met hers. She felt a weird tingling in her hands as he looked into her, almost peering into her soul. She looked away, flushed, and continued following Mr. stewart.

“This right here,” said Mr Stewart pointing to a room. “This is Ms. Anders' classroom. She will be your homeroom teacher.”

Lorelei smiled fakely at the old woman in the doorway of the classroom.
They kept walking along hallways, stopping at a few classrooms.
After he had introduced her to all of her teachers, he guided her upstairs to her dorm.

They walk around the corner to see two beautiful wooden doors. She hummed, "Maybe this school isn't a low budget dump after all." Lorelei said, admiring the patterned doors.

Mr. Stewart pushed the comment aside, “Yes, indeed it isn't.” he said, pulling the doors open to reveal a gorgeously architectured room. The first thing she noticed was the tall wooden walls and the ethereal bird sculptures that laced the ceiling. As she stared in awe, a question came to mind. “Mr Stewart, I have one question before we finish the tour.” Lorelei asked.

“Hm?” He hums, looking at her curiously. “Who is my dorm mate?” She asks, looking away again to admire the walls. “Hm.. let’s see..” He takes a blue binder out of his beige crossbody bag, Flipping through the pages until he stops at one, he starts skimming the page until he finds what he’s looking for.

“Cameron Adams.” Lorelei couldn’t help but be excited to meet her roommate, but she starts replaying the name in her head. It was strangely familiar, maybe she had seen it on a poster or something.

“Cameron is in a class right now, you can unpack for..” Mr. Stewart trails off. looking down at his watch, before quickly looking back up, knowing Lorelei’s waiting. “30 minutes until he comes back.” He says, smiling.

“Oh and that reminds me!” He says placing the binder back in his crossbody, “I have detention duty. I can't leave my students waiting!” He says, practically prancing out of the dorm before closing the door behind him.

What a strange man.

Lorelei grabbed her suitcase and marched over to an empty bed. The other one was messy and unmade. She starts unpacking her clothing into the closet. She's moving aside the clothing that belonged to Cameron to make space for her own when she hears a knock on the door.

“Hello?” She said, turning around to face the door.
The knob turned and she saw the person that she would have wanted to dorm with the least walk into the room.

“I think I should be asking if you’re a stalker.”

“Shouldn't you be in class?” She asks accusingly, raising an eyebrow.
