Branching paths to an infinite future

Summary:

Izuku's quirk, precognition, allows him to see the future through his unique clockwork looking eyes. But not just one future, all of them. Every small action, every word spoken or left unspoken forms a unique branching path. He sees how every choice he can make can affect the future, and boy does that give him a migraine.

He can't look to far into the future, otherwise the sheer amount of possibilities begin to hurt him, and there are so many different outcomes that there is practically no point anyway.

That doesn't mean he doesn't know a shit ton of things he probably shouldn't. He's overpowered, after all, how do you land a hit on someone who saw this fight coming 4 days ago?

Notes:

Izuku's eyes look like clocks, sort of like a greenish-blue version of what spins around in Nighteyes eyes when he uses his quirk, complete with the black sclera. Except all the time. The further into the future Izuku looks, the more blue his eyes turn.

Chapter 1: The first time he saw, and the first time he SAW.

Chapter Text

Izuku giggled as he chased after Kacchan. They were playing around in the park, heroes and villains. For today, Kacchan had begrudgingly agreed to be the villain because they both knew that he would be a damn good one if he ever went bad. Which is why they both knew he would be the best hero ever!

"You'll never catch me Small might!" Kacchan laughed, always staying just ahead of Izuku's grasping hands. He darted around a tree, using his weight to swing round and crash into Izuku, landing on top.

"I got you now villain!" Izuku cheered, using their momentum to roll over force Kacchan onto the ground under him. He grabbed Kacchan's wrists behind him and wrestled him down.

"Gotcha!" He cheered, letting him go and offering a hand up.

Kacchan stared at the outstretched hand, before grinning and taking it. "Just for the record, I let you win nerd." He stated, dusting himself off.

"You were awesome Kacchan! If you had killed your momentum, I wouldn't have been able to win at all!" Izuku gushed, looking at him with awe in his eyes.

"Yeah, well when I get my quirk nobody will be able to beat me! I'll be number one! But a number 1 needs a number 2, so you better keep up!" Kacchan stated confidently.

Izuku knew this was probably the highest praise he could give someone, it meant that he thought he was good enough to stand next to him. The thought made him tear up, and he quickly wrapped him in a hug.

"Aww, I love you too!" He said, hugging him close.

"H- Hey! Get off!" Kacchan yelled, but made no movement to dislodge him, simply sighing in exasperation and patting him on the back.

"Ya done?" He asked, unimpressed.

"Y- Yeah." Izuku said, pulling off him and wiping his eyes with his sleeve. He quickly flashed him a blinding smile and Bakugou had to shut his eyes to avoid being blinded.

"You'll have to fix the waterworks if you want to be a hero." He pointed out, giving him a playful punch to the shoulder.

"Yeah, I know. I'll work on that." He mumbled, before gaining a mischievous glint in his eyes. "In the meantime, it's my turn!" He cheered, giving Bakugou a shove before bolting of towards the swingsets.

"W- Hey!" Bakugou cried out, quickly pursuing his runaway best friend. "Get back here!"

Izuku looked into the popping explosions with wonder. Kacchan could only make sparks now, but they got bigger almost every time he used his quirk, which meant they would only get stronger!

"Now I'm just waiting on you!" Bakugou said with a grin, looking up from the firecracker pops to stare Izuku in the eyes. "I've got my kickass quirk, don't make me wait too long."

"I won't Kacchan!" Izuku giggled, reaching out to the pops but retracting his hand when he felt the heat warm his fingers. "So cool!" He mumbled, already thinking up thousands of practical applications for a quirk like his.

"Don't nerd out too much. I'll focus on my quirk, you focus on yours." Kacchan ordered. "I'll have enough people complimenting my quirk as is." He said that last part significantly more quietly.

"Gotcha Kacchan!" He cheered, looking back to his best friend.

"Hey... your eye." Kacchan said suddenly, looking into Izuku's eyes.

"What about it?" Izuku asked curiously. Kacchan fumbled around a bit before running to the playroom in the daycare, dragging Izuku with him until they ended up at the big dress-up mirror.

Looking into his reflection, he found that a small amount of the white part of his eye had turned black, just a small dot near the corner of his right eye.

"Does it hurt?" Kacchan asked.

"N- No." Izuku stuttered, peering closer. "I- I think it might be my quirk," Izuku said suddenly.

"A quirk that turns a small amount of your eye black? Yeah no way, it's gonna be way cooler than that!" Kacchan exclaimed, stomping his foot.

"It's only just coming in! A day ago you barely even knew your quirk was developing! It's gonna get way stronger!" Izuku defended, squinting at the black dot. It seemed to be growing larger, but at such a slow pace you could barely tell.

"It better! You're way too good to get stuck with a cosmetic quirk zuku!" Kacchan huffed, reaching up to ruffle his hair.

"I can't wait to see what I can do!" Izuku cheered.
____________
Inko had nearly had a heart attack when she woke him up in the morning.

She had gone into his room like she always did, and gave him a light push with a soft "It's time to get up Izuku!" to wake him for daycare.

When he'd opened his eyes, she found two glowing green symbols in the place of his iris and pupil. The sclera around it had turned a pure black, and soon after his eyes had opened the weird clock-like symbols had started to rotate at a slow pace, the edges of it glowing slightly blue as Izuku came to full consciousness.

Suddenly, her baby had been groaning, holding his head in his hands in pain. The symbol had begun to spin faster and faster, the blue spreading, the whole shape shifting from a light green to a cerulean with the barest hint of green at the center.

The time after that had been a blur, she had taken her baby into her arms, gotten in her car and drove. She'd been driving on autopilot for 15 minutes before her mind fully caught up to her enough to register she was approaching the hospital. Izuku was murmuring something in the backseat, and was drifting in and out of consciousness, and whenever he was conscious he seemed to be immediately swept away by whatever his quirk was doing to him.

It was a severe migraine, she could tell that at least, he seemed severely overwhelmed and any attempt at getting a response in any way seemed to only intensify his suffering. He kept mumbling about how she was repeating herself, but she wasn't. She even double-checked to make sure she wasn't mumbling anything, but she wasn't. She shook her head and focused on the road, whatever was happening to her baby couldn't wait, she'd get any answers soon.

She pulled into the parking lot of the hospital and quickly rushed in. The front desk was clear, miraculously devoid of a line even though she knew she would have forced her way to the front anyway. She quickly ran to the desk and sharply told the lady working there "I'm Inko Midoriya, my son is having a quirk awakening and it's hurting him, he's barely conscious." as calmly as possible.

The woman hit a button under her desk and in less than a minute a doctor came speeding into the room, taking one look at her before motioning for her to follow him and taking off into the hospital. She moved quickly, staying as close to the man as possible as they made their way to some section of the hospital clearly reserved for quirk emergencies.

They arrived at a room that looked like a typical examination room. The doctor rushed to his desk, furiously tapping away at a computer for a few moments. Inko leaned over to see him filling out approval forms for a multitude of tests, before producing a pen and paper and taking a seat across from them.

"Okay, Mrs. Midoriya." The doctor began "Let's start from the beginning."
____________
Izuku woke to a strange sensation in his skull. He'd never felt it before, it was like a pressure on his brain behind his eyes that he couldn't quite alleviate. Reaching for it with an experimental mental tug, he found a flash of images and memories flooding his mind. Except they weren't memories, they had never happened before.

It was like he could see thousands of doors that led to thousands of more doors, all opening and shutting as someone took a step to the right or left, as someone decided to say what was on their mind or to keep it in. The longer he looked, the more things changed with choices emerging and disappearing. The pressure started to build to an almost intolerable level, giving a headache that only seemed to worsen. Everything was happening faster, flickering past his eyes as the pressure built and built, seemingly running wild and untamed.

He wrangled this power with all his might, yanking firmly on whatever mental connection he had, trying to force it to go back, back to when it was nothing more than an uncomfortable pressure.

He found everything lessening, the chaos dwindling to but a few pathways. It was peaceful, he could focus on what he was seeing. It was some kind of hospital, he was looking into a room and he saw... himself lying in one of the beds. The not-him groaned as he woke up, rubbing his temples as he attempted to relieve the pressure.

Something must have given on the heart monitor hooked up to him, as a doctor and his mother burst into the room soon after. Inko looked at him for a few moments before wrapping him in a giant hug. He could only hear bits and pieces, but he knew they were talking about his quirk. Which, cool! He had a quirk! Not-him said something that made his mother and the doctor exchange a glance before the doctor said something about some tests. Suddenly, more pathways joined the current one, pressure spiking as he saw the same scenario playing out slightly differently.

He'd had enough of watching. He wasn't sure what kind of dream this was, but it seemed to be some out-of-body experience. He pulled the pressure all the way back, feeling something behind his eyes settle as he shifted in bed.

He groaned into the duvet as he woke up, lights coming into focus as the world began to take shape. It was a lot of stimulation, especially after what he'd just been through. The intense brightness was not helping the pressure behind his eyes, as he brought a hand to massage his temples in an attempt to relieve it.

His heart monitor must have picked up the increased activity because suddenly two... figures... burst into the room. His mom... and a doctor.

'Wait a minute.' He thought. 'This just happened in my dream!'

Inko looked deep into his eyes for a moment, and he barely caught his reflection in her own. His eyes looked so different. Before he was suddenly wrapped in the firmest hug he'd ever been in in his life.

"Izuku!" She cried, he winced at the loudness. "You're okay!"

"You had us worried." The doctor reported, content to look over some results on his tablet. "You weren't sleeping, your brain was too active for that, but it seemed like your quirk had somehow pulled you from the reigns of your body. We're going to have to figure out exactly what's happening to cause this effect."

"And we're going to test in with an experimental quirk factor activation detector, right?" Izuku tentatively put out.

The doctor looked up at him, no small amount of shock on the man's face. "How did you know that? That technology isn't mainstream yet, there is no possible way..."

"I saw it!" Izuku chirped.

The doctor and his mother exchanged a look.

"Izuku, baby, what do you mean you saw it?" Inko tentatively asked.

"Before I woke up! I was looking at this, I saw this from start to end, and in the end, we went off to the machine to do some tests!" Izuku explained.

The doctor looked at him with a glint in his eye. "So you're saying... you foresaw this encounter?" He inquired curiously.

"Uhuh!" Izuku responded, nodding his head furiously.

"Then there is no need for the test! That would have been to find the general idea of your quirk, we can skip that now!" The man replied, drawing a line through something on his paper.

"That didn't happen..." Izuku mumbled. "But it also... did?"

The doctor quirked an eyebrow. "Elaborate, any detail could be important."

"I saw this whole encounter up until the tests when it seemed like everything started to change. There were more visions, each playing at the same time that I watched at the same time, I think in one we didn't go to the experiment."

The doctor noted everything down. "Hmm, so the future is not set in stone then. Your quirk not only accounts for the changes a single action could affect the future, it splits your focus over every scene. You know everything at once."

Izuku nodded his head. "I think I went really far at the start. There was so much of everything I couldn't think!" The boy exclaimed.

"Hmm, overwhelming the further you go, yes I assume if every possible timeline is also creating offshoots for your quirk, then it would be significantly overwhelming. I think we can place this as what caused his waking mind to be pulled into his quirk. There is a possibility that activating the quirk in a low timeframe could allow it to simply overlay your sight instead of replacing it, but that remains a theory." The man theorized, writing something on his pad of paper.

"Well, I believe you should be good to go Midoriya's. If anything drastic happens again, please don't hesitate to return."

"Don't I get to name my quirk?" The boy sheepishly asked.

"Indeed you do. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, foresight is taken." The doctor stated with a smile,

"Premonition, future sight, omniscience." His mother listed off, but he shushed her.

"How about, precognition?" He asked.

"A very big word for a child your age, very well, precognition it is!" The doctor said, changing the final report to include the boy's preferred quirk name.

Izuku beamed at the praise, allowing the smallest amounts of his quirk to flow through his eyes. Enough to see him leaving the office in the next 30 seconds.

"Fascinating." The doctor breathed, before editing the paper, muttering aloud. "When the user activates their quirk, the symbol in place of the iris begins to rotate."

He cocked his head. "Symbol?"

Inko, not wasting any time, held up a pocket mirror. He gasped at what he saw.

"So... Pretty." He mumbled, looking at the intricate design, glowing green against a black background. He loved it.

He channeled the smallest amount of power, delighting in the way it began to orbit, the edges just barely twinging blue. The vision he saw in his minds eye was of the same scene, but the mirror was suddenly taken away. A few seconds later, so was the one he was looking at.

Inko giggled. "You can admire them later, we should go." She spoke softly.

"Okay mama!" He replied, taking her hand and walking out of the office. Exactly 30 seconds after he saw it.
