Work Text:
Lucy squeezes into her uniform and she may need to get a new one. She is six months pregnant and Grey needed some extra help with Nolan’s rookie. She has just been helping Grey around the station normally. “Are you ready to be a TO again for a day?” Tim greets her when she exits the locker room.
“I finished training a rookie exactly six months ago. I think I can handle it.” Tim grins and loves her feistiness.
“Hmm, well Ridley is something else. That’s for sure.” Lucy shakes her head.
“I think I can handle the virgin. You are with a loose cannon every single day.”
Tim pulls her to the side. “I know that. I will always worry about you two.” His hand lands on her belly. They always find quiet moments to sneak away. He can’t keep his hands off her, which surprises no one. They can’t wait for their little girl to arrive. Penn and Ridley know better than to mess with Lucy. Tim threatened them both in the beginning especially when Penn tried to hit on his wife. Their reactions when they found out were priceless.
“I know that babe.” Lucy’s eyes light up suddenly and she grins.
“I don’t like that look.”
Lucy puts her hands on her hips. “We need to make a bet.” She claps her hands together and Tim wants to groan. The look on her face could kill.
“Why do you want to bet on our rookies? Do you not remember what happened last time that we did this?”
Lucy had kicked his ass that day and his rookie was bounced because he crashed the shop into the front of the station. How the hell does one hit the gas and not the brakes? “I sure do, but you’ve been training this one longer. Please babe.”
Tim knows that he just can’t say no to Lucy especially when she looks at him with that teasing look and she starts chewing her bottom lip. “I can’t say no to you, can I?”
“Not at all.” Lucy grins. “And we don’t want to have to withhold sex, now do we?”
Tim’s eyes go wide. “No, why would you do that?”
She busts out laughing. “Oh you are too easy Timothy.” Both Lucy and their daughter have him wrapped around their fingers. “Maybe that’s only for you two.” Tim smirks at her. “So what are we betting this time?”
Lucy taps her chin. “Hmmm. Whoever loses changes all of her poopy diapers for the first month.”
Tim shakes his head because of course he would bring their daughter in. “And gets to choose her middle name.”
Lucy groans because Tim has brought up some questionable name choices but so has she. “I think I can work with that, but her first name is not part of this. I want that to be special.” Lucy’s eyes light up and whispers something into Tim’s ear. He agrees easily.
They head into roll call and Tim pulls Lucy's chair out. Penn and Ridley are up front. Grey grins at them because they have no idea what’s happening today. “Are you ready for another day?”
“Yes sir.”
“Officer Penn, you will be riding with the other Sergeant Bradford and myself today.” Tim almost chokes on his coffee while Lucy pats his back. “And Officer Ridley, you are riding with her other half.”
Ridley wants to crawl in a hole. “Yes sir.” Grey dismisses them and Tim walks to the rookies.
“If anything happens to my wife or daughter, you will regret the decision to come to Los Angeles.” He hears Lucy clear her voice. “What?” He says exasperated.
“You’re ridiculous. I can take care of myself. Plus, Miles likes his life. He’s done making dumbass decisions isn’t that right?”
“Uh, I am, yes.” She pats his cheek and crosses her arms before turning to Tim and Ridley. “If my husband has one scratch, you’re a dead man.” Tim goes to say something. “Oh, am I not allowed to threaten rookies? Is this only you who can do it?”
“Don’t worry ma’am.”
“I’m messing with you, Ridley. You’re a smart person and I trust you.” Tim loves her sassiness but bites his tongue for now. He wants to drag her to a supply closet, but he can’t. Instead, he goes out on patrol. Grey and Lucy get in the car with Penn. Tim chuckles when he sees Penn get into the backseat.
Grey and Lucy are talking amongst themselves with Penn observing. She looks at Grey before looking at Penn. “You’re going to take charge on a few calls today. We will evaluate how you do. Just remember that this is because of your previous actions that have been filed in every single report by the other Sergeant Bradford.”
“Uh, yes sir. Does this mean I may lose my job?”
“Do you think it does?” He isn’t sure and he’s saved when a call comes in. Penn is nervous but he manages that scene, well almost. Lucy had to step in because he can’t stop flirting.
“Officer Penn.” Lucy growls out before they head back out. “You are here to do a job. This is not a time to flirt or act the way you did. If this is how you act with us, I can’t even imagine how it is when we aren’t here.”
“Well, I’m sorry. I was just being friendly.”
“You can be friendly without trying to get into someone’s pants. I’m so glad that I’m pregnant because I wouldn’t want to have to be fired for smacking you.” Grey does his best not to laugh.
“I would never do that Sergeant Bradford.” He is so uncomfortable but it’s kind of humorous. They finally get in the shop and head back out. The next three calls don’t go well, but both Lucy and Grey are there. Penn is struggling and they even try to coach him. Lucy can see why Tim is so stressed every single day. She feels a headache coming on and can only hope that Tim’s day is better. Lunch rolls around and Lucy heads inside. She loves her daughter, but she still has some morning sickness. She barely makes it to the bathroom. Being back on patrol isn’t as fun as she thought it might be.
“Luce.” Tim is right by her side. He must have seen her run to the bathroom.
“This sucks.” He helps her up and to the sink.
“I’m sorry. Do you want to go home?” Lucy shakes her head.
“No, I am just not used to being out on patrol and dealing with this heat while pregnant. I’ll be fine. I’ve been drinking water.”
Tim kisses her forehead. “And you don’t want to lose the bet.” She laughs into his chest.
“Maybe that’s a small part of it, but your rookie is a mess. We are trying to help him and he just can’t seem to pull out of his ways. I’m sorry.”
“He’s gotten better, which is saying something.” Lucy rubs her head as they make their way outside. Grey was kind enough to order them food.
“Thank you.” Lucy sits and immediately starts eating. Tim doesn’t say anything as he sits beside her.
Lunch goes by way too quickly and soon they’re headed back out. Lucy makes sure to have water with her even if she knows that she will have to go to the bathroom every five minutes. There’s a car in front of them with a back tail light out. Penn and Grey handle the stop but when the guy tries to run, Lucy opens the door and he slams right into it. “Watch where you’re running there.” She grumbles. “Moron.” But only Grey hears her say it.
It’s decided that they will head back to the station and start paperwork. Lucy looks like she’s about to pass out and maybe flip out on her rookie. “Start the paperwork.” Lucy looks at him. “Make sure that nothing is out of place when it gets to me.” She walks to Grey’s office and slams the door shut.
He has his arms crossed. “He isn’t the worst we have seen, but he needs to think before throwing himself headfirst into things. I don’t know how to feel. He either gets bounced or maybe we make him go back to the academy for a month. If he can’t change his ways, then we can decide.”
“Or we can stick him with Smitty.” Lucy snorts and then rubs her belly when her daughter kicks.
“Or that.” Lucy rubs her temples. “I definitely lost this bet.” She thinks it’s said quietly but Grey stares her down.
“You two did not bet on your rookies again.”
Lucy goes red. “Um maybe?” She realizes her mistake and blames her pregnancy brain.
“What will I do with you two?” Grey shakes his head.
“Remember that you’re going to have an adorable granddaughter here in a few months.” Lucy knows exactly what to say to him.
They see Tim and Ridley walk in. Grey goes to catch Tim. “Bradford, my office now. We need to talk about this bet you placed with your wife.” Ridley tries not to laugh and everyone else shakes their heads at the antics of the Bradford’s.
“You told him.” Tim looks at Lucy.
“It’s my pregnancy brain! I’m sorry.” She retorts. “I’m carrying half your DNA.” Both men try not to smile or laugh.
“You two are something else.” He goes to grab the rookies. “Your TO’s have made a bet. Let’s see which one of you won it for them today.”
“I win no matter what.” Lucy rolls her eyes at him.
“Sorry Lucy, Tim and Ridley win it today.” She groans. “So what was the bet this time?”
“Well I’m stuck on diaper duty for a whole month and he gets to choose her middle name.”
Tim grins. “But that’s not it. You two were involved and we aren’t sorry for not telling you.” Both rookies look on with horror. “Penn, you owe us a whole month of diapers. Oh, and if I call you at two in the morning to bring ice cream, you’ll do it.”
“What?” His eyes go wide but Ridley is cracking up. “That’s not right.” Tim shoots him a look. “Yes sir, okay.”
“I’ll pay for half of them.” Ridley throws in. “Take one for the team.”
“Okay all of you head out. Penn, you survived another day.”
As soon as they’re home, Lucy collapses on the couch. “I promise you won’t be doing diaper duty by yourself.”
“But our bet.” Lucy murmurs.
“You’re going to be recovering from giving birth. I would never do that anyways, but I do have the perfect middle name.”
“And what would that be?”
Tim smiles and the look on his face has her almost crying. “Well what do you think of Madyson Lucy Bradford?”
Lucy starts crying. “You want to name her after me?”
“You’re my favorite person Lucy. Our daughter is going to be a little piece of us and I want her carrying the name of the strongest woman I know. She is going to know that her mother is the best.”
“Babe.” She kisses him softly. “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Penn did buy enough diapers for a month and he always made sure to grab Lucy’s craving of the day while out. Maybe he redeemed himself just a little bit.
