Work Text:
Lucy is pleasantly surprised to see Tim standing next to Grey during roll call. She feels like she has seen him less than she typically does at work ever since she started training her rookie. The small moments between them are very much missed. She had passed the TO exam and the new batches of rookies started the next day. Nolan was still training Celina, so Grey was able to get privileges for Aaron to be a training officer for now. With Tim in Metro, he couldn’t turn to him to train anyone.
“Why’s your man blessing us with his presence today?” Lucy laughs at Aaron’s words. He has become a good friend to both of them.
“He didn’t tell me anything, so I am just as surprised as you are to see him.” Mad Dog walks in and comes to say hi to Lucy before taking his place next to Tim. They make a great team.
“Listen up everyone. Metro needs our assistance today. Not you Nolan and Celina. You two have something else you’re needed for.” Grey looks around the room and nods at Lucy. “I’m going to hand it off to Sergeant Bradford now.”
Tim steps forward. “Listen up. We have been chasing an armed robber. The last three turned violent and then this last one turned deadly. Thanks to Harper and Lopez, we have a name. Edward Fuentes. He has a rap sheet a mile long and he isn’t afraid to turn violent. We all need to be vigilant. Chen and Thorsen, you and your rookies will be assisting. Meet us at the Metro training area to go over the plan. Thank you.”
Lucy smiles at Tim and she notices the smallest one coming back to her. He quickly puts his usual scowl back on and Lucy can’t help but admire how good he looks in cargo pants. Grey dismisses them. Tim doesn’t leave quite yet, but everyone else seems to. Her rookie comes close and Tim can hear them. “Do I still need to prep the shop?”
Lucy might just kill him today. “You’re joking right? You’re not asking me a stupid ass question like that right now are you? Are we working today? Or are we sitting on our asses twiddling our thumbs?” Tim looks at her proudly.
Penn goes red. “I’m sorry darlin’. I didn’t think-”
Lucy can see that Tim heard what Penn called her and she sees his eyebrows raise. She slams her hands on the table, thankful that the room is cleared. “No, you definitely didn’t think. My name is Officer Chen, not darlin’. I am your superior officer and you will respect me. Clearly, thinking seems to be lacking with you.” She is seething and she can see that Tim is just as mad. “You are on thin ice, Penn. Go get the bags unless you don’t want to be a cop anymore.” She blows out a breath as he scrambles out of the room. Tim motions for Lucy to follow her and pulls her to his office.
“Darlin’? Really?”
“Tim.” He pushes her against the door and crashes his lips against hers. “Baby, we are at work. He’s an idiot.”
“I know where we are but I left before you and we didn’t even get to take our shower today.” He pouts and Lucy nips his bottom lip.
“Does it help if I tell you that I waited to shower so we can have one together when we get home?” Tim’s face lights up and he grins.
“That does help. I still can’t stand your rookie. Will he try to do something dumb at my scene today?”
Lucy places her hands on Tim’s chest. “I hope not, but if he even smiles the wrong way, he will get a dose of the hardass, grumpy Sergeant Bradford that I love.”
“I am not grumpy.” He looks at her pointedly. Lucy resists the urge to throw a sassy comment out there so she decides to peck his cheek.
“Whatever you say babe. Now let’s go find your team before they come looking for us.”
“At least we have clothes on this time.” Tim throws it out there. Lucy is now reminded of how Mad Dog found them in his office mostly naked, in the middle of their own naked times. He promised to never speak of it, but Tim owed him. Tim did whatever he asked, which wasn’t much, but it was never spoken of again.
As soon as they walk in the room, Mad Dog shoots them a look and Lucy covers her mouth giggling. “Okay, listen up.”
The way Tim commands a room makes Lucy squirm, but no one seems to notice. It doesn’t take long to go over their plan before they are heading out.
Lucy snaps Penn out of his head and they start putting their gear on. She just wants this day over with. “Are you going to follow directions today, boot, or will you pull some stupid stunt? Metro ops are even more dangerous than some of the situations that we are put in.”
Penn knows that he has made mistakes, but he’s not an idiot. “I know that Officer Chen. I will follow all orders to a T, darlin’.” Every single person looks up at them. You could hear a pin drop and Lucy looks like she may murder Penn.
Mad Dog is the one to speak. “Come on everyone. Let’s go.”
Tim is making fists and Lucy turns around. “What did I tell you about calling me that? It is Officer Chen to you.” She spats out. “How can I trust you in the field when you keep calling me darling and flirting with me? You keep ignoring my orders. Damnit Penn.”
“I can do my job.” Lucy may kill him before they make it to the scene.
“Penn, you’re riding with me and Ridley.” Aaron walks over. Lucy thanks him and glares at Penn who smartly walks away. Tim has already gone with Metro and Lucy heads to her own shop.
They park a bit away from the scene and everyone gets ready to find the suspect. Lucy, Aaron, and the rookies are on a team with another member of Metro. Tim is leading another team and Mad Dog is leading a third. This should be pretty straight forward and hopefully within an hour they will be headed back to the station. Penn is quiet and follows all orders which is why Lucy gets mad at him. He isn’t stupid and he is a good cop. He just lets his ego get in the way.
Their relationship is no secret, but clearly the rookies haven’t paid too much attention to their surroundings. “Listen up.” Tim once again commands the officers. “You have your orders. Once inside, please keep your focus on the suspect. If anything seems off, then get out and alert the others. Be safe.”
Lucy catches his eye and they split into their teams. Thankfully, their suspect wasn’t some genius and they managed to get in the building with no issue. Lucy and Penn have gone down one hallway, when they hear a noise. “Penn, you go left and I’ll go right.”
They split up and don’t see anything. Suddenly the man they are looking for comes out of nowhere and takes Penn by surprise. Lucy is around the corner and makes a plan. She manages to take his legs out and flip him onto his stomach. “Stay down. You’re under arrest.” She looks at Penn who has a nasty gash on his head. “Are you good?”
“I think so. He just came out of nowhere.”
Lucy knows that he did his job. “Listen, he was hiding where we least expected. You fought back and he’s in custody. You need to go get checked out, no arguments.”
“Yes ma’am.” She hands him something to put to his head. Tim and the rest of the teams finally catch up. He just knows that Lucy took him down and he smiles proudly. “Great work Officer Chen.”
“Thank you.” She hands their suspect off to Aaron who reads him his rights.
“And you too, boot. Go get your head checked out and stitched up.” Tim looks at him with such ferocity in his eyes.
“I am going to sir, even though I’ve handled worse in my life.” Penn tries to argue.
“That may be so, but you are a cop. You were injured in the line of duty.”
When they get outside, Penn is ushered to an ambulance. They are able to take care of him in the field and he refuses any other care. Lucy rolls her eyes because he is as stubborn as Tim is when he gets injured.
Finally, they are headed back to the station. “You don’t need to play a hero, Penn. You could potentially have a concussion.”
He shrugs. “Nothing I can’t handle.”
Lucy resists the urge to say something else and just keeps her mouth shut. “Paperwork better be perfect. We don’t want to screw this up.”
He is silent as they walk back into the station and start their paperwork for their raid. By five, everyone is finished and itching to go. It’s been a long day. Angela rounds everyone up and tells them to meet at the food trucks. The first round is on her courtesy of her husband.
Lucy waits for Tim to finish his briefing with Pine before leaving. “You didn’t need to wait for me.” The relief on his face is evident.
“I wanted to. I love Angela but I really just want to go home. It was so hot watching you command the scene today.” Tim loves the effect that he has on her.
Tim’s lips are so close to hers. “But watching you take a suspect down is one of my favorite things to do.” Lucy pulls his head down the rest of the way to kiss him. “One beer and we can head home. I promise.”
Lucy groans and they walk outside. Everyone seems to be occupied and Tim tells Lucy to sit. He grabs their first round. “I heard you took the idiot down Lucy.” Angela grins.
“I did my job.”
Penn looks at her. “You took down a man who is bigger than me. That’s not an easy feat.”
“It’s nothing that I haven’t done before.” Lucy doesn’t want this made into a big deal because it really isn’t.
“Darlin’ you kicked ass.” Angela starts choking on her beer and then starts laughing. Lucy is rubbing her head and about to kill Penn.
“Are you looking for a death wish, Officer Penn?”
His eyebrows raise. “No, why?” He genuinely seeme confused.
“Because you’re dumbass keeps calling me darlin’. I’m ready to kick your ass back to Texas.”
“You’re a world class dumbass. You’ve done it more than once.” Angela is bending over in a fit of laughter. “Oh my god. How has Tim not murdered you yet?”
Now Penn is really confused. “Why would Sergeant Bradford murder me?”
Now Angela is laughing harder and even Grey joins in. Tim walks over. “He doesn’t know, does he?” Lucy knows that Tim must have overheard her rookie again. “Oh this is so good.”
“Okay, I’m confused.” Penn looks between them.
“First, Officer Chen is your superior and what you’re doing is disrespectful. You will be written up tomorrow.” Grey looks at him and Penn knows that he screwed up, again.
Angela continues on. “And she’s engaged to Tim. It’s all everyone talks about, especially your roommate.” Penn was still living with Smitty. He was their number one fan.
Penn knows in that moment that he regrets every decision he’s made today and for the past six months regarding Lucy. “Shit, I’m sorry. I, uh, it’ll never happen again.”
“Oh this is gold.” Angela loves messing with people.
“It better not happen again, boot.” Tim is standing there with his arms crossed and Lucy pulls him to sit.
“You’re the only broody man I love.” She whispers and kisses his cheek. Penn just wants to crawl in a hole while he watches his TO kiss her fiancé. He seemed to finally learn his lesson. Tim made sure to show Penn that Lucy was his any chance he got.
