“What ya writing there?”
You jumped at the sound of Aerith’s sweet, cheerful voice, and quickly shut your journal before looking behind your shoulder to see Aerith leaning forward, her hands behind her back.
“N-Nothing,” you stammered, feeling your cheeks heat up as you clutched the closed journal to your chest. Aerith tilted her head, a curious grin spreading across her lips. Her green eyes sparkled with playful mischief, and she straightened up, taking a step closer, plopping down on the edge of your bed in the room you and Aerith were sharing while the party was staying in Junon.
Aerith’s presence was magnetic, her every move disarming. You could feel her warmth even from across the room, and the faint floral scent that always seemed to cling to her only made your heart race faster.
“Nothing?” she repeated, her voice lilting with disbelief. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as her grin widened. “You’re a terrible liar, you know that?”
You hugged the journal tighter, as if it were your last line of defense against her growing curiosity. “It’s just… personal stuff,” you murmured, trying to sound casual. But the tremor in your voice betrayed you, and Aerith’s expression softened, though the curiosity in her gaze never dimmed.
“Ohhh,” she said teasingly, drawing the word out. “Personal stuff, huh? Like secrets? Or maybe…” She leaned closer, her voice dropping playfully. “...you’re writing about someone?”
Your breath caught in your throat, and her grin grew impossibly brighter. Damn it, she was far too good at reading people.
“N-No! Not at all!” you protested, your voice an octave higher than intended. You tried to scoot back on the bed, but Aerith was faster. She bounced up, closing the distance between you in an instant, her delicate fingers reaching out to poke your side.
“Is it about me?” she asked, her tone light and sing-song, but her gaze felt piercing.
The sudden question made your heart stop for a moment, and your cheeks burned brighter than ever. “Aerith!” you whined, trying to deflect. But she only giggled and sat down beside you, leaning in closer, her shoulder brushing yours.
“C’mon,” she coaxed gently. “I won’t laugh. Promise.” Her green eyes sparkled, full of sincerity and something deeper—a quiet invitation you couldn’t quite name.
You swallowed hard, feeling like the walls of the small inn room were closing in on you. “It’s just…” You hesitated, looking down at the journal in your lap. The leather cover felt too warm against your palms.
Aerith tilted her head, her voice softening. “Hey… you can trust me, you know.” Her smile was smaller now, less teasing but no less radiant. “I’d never tell anyone. Cross my heart.”
Her words struck something deep within you. She had that uncanny ability to make you feel safe, even when you were most vulnerable. Taking a deep breath, you finally loosened your grip on the journal.
“It’s… not much,” you murmured, opening it to a blank page so she wouldn’t see the flurry of thoughts you’d scrawled about her earlier. “Just some… thoughts. Feelings.”
Aerith nodded, her hand resting lightly on the bed between you, fingers brushing against yours. “Feelings are important,” she said softly, her voice carrying a depth of understanding that made your chest ache.
You turned to look at her, and for a moment, the world outside the room seemed to fade away. Her gaze held yours, unflinching yet kind, and her lips curled into a smaller, almost knowing smile. “And sometimes… it’s okay to share them,” she added, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her hand moved slightly, her pinky finger hooking around yours. The small gesture made your pulse quicken. It was as though she were asking permission—waiting for you to take the next step.
“I… uh…” The words tangled in your throat, refusing to form as Aerith’s gaze locked onto yours, steady and patient. Her pinky lingered against yours, the smallest touch but impossibly intimate, as if she could feel every rapid thrum of your heartbeat.
Aerith tilted her head ever so slightly, her soft brown hair brushing her shoulders. “Hmm?” she hummed, her voice a gentle nudge, urging you to continue.
You tore your eyes away from hers, focusing on the journal instead as your hands fidgeted nervously on the cover. “It’s just…” you began again, the words faltering as you felt her lean in closer, her warmth brushing against your side like a quiet promise. “I don’t really… talk about this kind of stuff.”
Aerith’s lips curved into a soft, understanding smile. “You don’t have to,” she said, her voice low and soothing. But then she added, a playful lilt returning, “Unless it’s something about me. Then I think I definitely deserve to know.”
You groaned, covering your face with your hands. “You’re impossible, you know that?”
She laughed, a sound so sweet and unrestrained that it felt like sunlight spilling into the room. “I’ve been told that a time or two,” she admitted, and before you could react, you felt her hand gently rest atop yours, prying your fingers away from your face.
When you looked at her again, she was closer than ever, her eyes impossibly green and impossibly kind. “Hey,” she said softly. “I don’t mean to tease too much. I just… like seeing you smile.”
Your breath hitched, and for a moment, you forgot how to function entirely. She squeezed your hand gently, and suddenly it felt like the walls were closing in again—not from pressure, but from the overwhelming gravity of her.
“I guess I just like you,” she said, as casual as if she were remarking on the weather. But her cheeks held the faintest flush of pink, betraying the effort it took to say those words. “A lot.”
The journal slipped from your lap as you stared at her, mouth slightly open, heart pounding so loud you were sure she could hear it.
“I—Aerith—”
“Shh,” she whispered, her fingers brushing lightly against your knuckles. “You don’t have to say anything. I just wanted to let you know.”
But as her words settled, as her gaze lingered on you with a tenderness that threatened to undo you, you felt something stir deep within—something bolder than the nervousness, something stronger than the fear.
You reached for her hand in return, lacing your fingers with hers. “No,” you said, your voice trembling but resolute. “I… like you too.”
Her eyes widened slightly, her lips parting in surprise. Then, that radiant smile broke through, and it was brighter than you’d ever seen it. “You do?” she asked, her voice soft and almost disbelieving, as if she needed to hear it again.
“I do,” you said firmly, your cheeks burning as you held her gaze. “A lot.”
Aerith laughed again, but this time it was softer, breathier. Her free hand came up to gently brush a strand of hair from your face, her touch lingering just a second too long. “Well,” she murmured, her voice dipping low, “I guess we’re on the same page, huh?”
And before you could process it, she leaned in, her forehead lightly bumping yours. Her eyes fluttered shut, and her breath tickled your lips as she whispered, “Can I?”
You nodded before you could think, and the world seemed to stand still as her lips met yours, soft and warm and everything you hadn’t dared to dream.
She's sunlight through the cracks, a bright, golden beam that splits the room in two, touching every shadow with her warmth. Her lips press softly against yours, like the gentlest of winds, but there’s a spark there—a quiet power in the way she leans into you. Every nerve in your body hums, and your chest feels full, like it could burst from the simple touch of her, from the promise of something more that’s lingering between you.
Aerith pulls away slowly, her breath mingling with yours, a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. Her eyes are soft but hold something deeper, something unspoken, as if she’s letting the silence between you say all the things you couldn’t quite find words for.
“Is it weird?” she asks, her voice barely above a whisper, like she’s afraid to break the fragile moment between you. But her fingers, still interlaced with yours, tighten just enough to say everything she doesn’t need to say.
“No,” you breathe, shaking your head. "Not at all." Your hand moves on its own, reaching to brush a stray lock of hair from her face, letting your fingers linger against her skin. It feels electric, like you’ve been starving for this touch, and now that it’s here, you never want it to end.
Aerith’s lips curl upward, the faintest hint of mischief returning to her expression, though there’s something tender beneath it. "Good," she murmurs, before her gaze drops to your lips again, as though she’s debating whether to pull you back in. The air between you crackles with the weight of unspoken desire, thick with the kind of tension that makes your pulse race, your stomach flip with both excitement and nerves.
And then, as if unable to resist the pull, she leans in once more, this time her kiss deeper, more urgent. You respond in kind, your hand moving to her waist, pulling her closer, feeling the heat of her body against yours. She’s a force, a whirlwind that sweeps you up and drowns you in the softness of her, her scent, her touch, her laughter. Everything that makes Aerith Aerith.
But the kiss... it’s more than just a kiss. It’s the unspoken connection, the quiet promise of what might come next. And you both know—there’s so much more to explore, so much more to feel.
The world outside the room fades completely, and for the first time in what feels like forever, all that matters is this, right here. Aerith, her hand in yours, the heat of her skin against yours, the lightness of her breath mingling with your own, and the shared, uncharted territory of this newfound closeness.
You're both daring to move past the cracks, past the silence, into something new. Something real.
