Chapter 1: Depths of Hyrule Castle

Chapter Text

“I wonder how far down this passage goes,” she murmured, scrutinizing the stony stairway dispersing into the darkness. “I suppose there’s only one way to find out.” The princess turned, lifting her lit torch. Link nodded his head, reaching over to his hilt strapped to his back, drawing the master sword from its scabbard. It gave off a blue glow in the darkness as Link and Zelda descended into the tunnel. It seemed to extend forever, until they finally reached the bottom of the stony stairway.

“This strange gloom keeps getting thicker,” Zelda commented. Link nodded once more, eyes tracking the red and black whisps swirling in the air around them. They continued, meeting on another stairway. “We’ve been descending for a while now. These tunnels are deeper than I thought.”

“No kidding,” Link muttered, opting to talk instead of signing.

“What could be down here?” The knight didn’t respond this time, not having a clue himself. They trekked further down, coming upon a cavern full of luminous stones. “People have fallen ill after coming in contact with the gloom down in these caverns.” They’d certainly have to be careful. “It appears to be misty here, not concentrated enough to harm us.” If Link knew anything from his past, the gloom resembled the malice he had once fought during Calamity Ganon. Yet, Calamity Ganon was gone. He had made sure of it. So then why was there still malice? The only difference was the gloom was heavily concentrated.

Link and Zelda worked fruitlessly to rebuild Hyrule over the years since the defeat of Calamity Ganon. It cost much sacrifice and strenuous labor. Much has changed over the years. Now here they were, unearthing something from deep within the earth beneath Hyrule Castle, something from a bygone era, forgotten.

 “We must continue on.”

She paused, turning around to face him. “We do not know what awaits us. But we must be ready to face anything. I know with you by my side we will be okay.” Link offered her a genuine smile, chest swelling with pride at his best friend’s words. Without further ado, the chosen knight followed the princess, close to her side. They strolled on, until they entered a spacious room. It was unlike the previous caverns that were nothing but rugged rocks. This room was more defined, and there were markings and images on the stone slabs covering the walls. Link lifted his head, noticing Zelda scrutinizing the images with her lit torch.

“Look at these murals…” The princess gasped, walking up closer. “They’re written histories of the royal families! It depicts stories of a Great War long ago. It was between allied tribes, and someone referred to as the Demon King.” Link could see it now, an army of monsters drawn on the murals. Zelda moved along, Link following her until they came to a specific image of a strange creature. “This looks like the statues we saw earlier— a Zonai.” They had certainly seen them at the entrance of the hidden passage. They depicted goats with long ears. Beneath the Zonai image were familiar drawings of Hylians. “This image clearly suggests the Zonai descended from the heavens.” Link could judge that much, considering the Zonai was literally on a floating pedestal. There was another image of a Zonai and a female Hylian joined together by hand.

“It is said the first of Hyrule’s royal bloodline was born in union with gods.” Zelda let out a sharp gasp as Link’s mouth settled into a thin line noticing a strange large man stealing something, what it was he could not tell but it had to be something powerful if the female Hylian’s body was flung back as if dead. This was clearly not good.

“And this depicts the Demon King.” Zelda moved to another mural. This man was enormous compared to everything, hand extended as if summoning gloom, red swirls staining the mural with countless monsters and Hylians engaged in battle. “This is the Imprisoning War and the leading events!” The blond swung around, blue eyes sparkling with excitement. “This is a major discovery!” Reaching into her pocket, Link reached over to take hold of Zelda’s torch so she could pull out the Purah Pad and snap some photos. These would be handy for later.

“Ah,” Zelda lowered the Purah Pad. Link lifted the torch to allow greater visibility. “It appears some of the murals are obscured.” They were completely covered with rocks. She sighed, returning the pad back to her belt. Link handed back the torch as they turned toward the archway that led to another tunnel. “Perhaps we might find more answers ahead.” They walked slowly, cautious of their steps as the gloom intensified. Link felt a cold sense of dread creeping along his back. Whatever it was, it couldn’t be good.

They finally came to another cavern, one that didn’t have any further tunnels. This must be the end, the furthest down they could go. “What is that?!” Green eyes drifted to the suspended figure in the center of the room, a mummy from the looks of it. Its chest held up by a mysterious glowing arm swirling with foreign green symbols. They trudged up close, only a few feet away noticing the gloom pouring from the mummy’s chest. This had to be the source.

The glowing hand suddenly fell, releasing its hold from the mummy’s chest with the lustrous stone falling off. It clanged against the firm ground, Zelda kneeling down to pick up the peculiar stone. It was oddly shaped too, like some sort of teardrop.

As if on cue, the mummy began to twitch, arms and legs spasming. It tried to pull itself up in vain, only to fall backwards with its head hanging. Its neck made a sickening crack, turning toward them, eyes flashing red. All at once, gloom shot out from its chest spreading through the air in tendrils before shooting directly at Zelda. Link’s reflexes reacted, moving in time with his extended sword to block the gloom. It crawled along his sword until it consumed the entirety of his right arm. He let out a cry at the searing pain.

“LINK!” It burned through him, the most excruciating pain he had ever felt. It topped what he felt during the calamity.

“AGH!” He clutched onto his arm once the gloom had dissipated, his right arm completely gray. Another tendril sought its opportunity, Link swinging the master sword to block it once more. Only this time, the gloom shattered the blade in the process. Glowing shards flew in all directions, one of them grazing the mummy.

“Link!” He could feel Zelda touching his back, worry flooding from the princess.

“Was that the sword that seals the darkness,” a cold menacing voice echoed from none other than the mummy. This couldn’t be possible. The mummy shouldn’t be alive. It began to laugh, a bone-chilling wicked sound. “That blade will not save you.” The mummy began to rise, bones cracking. “Pathetic. Do you know who I am? Did you really think that you could defeat me? You will face your inevitable end.” The mummy raised its arms to the pointed ceiling, a blast of gloom surging the ceiling as the entire cavern began to shake.

Link grunted, holding onto his arm. He couldn't feel anything, despite his fingers still gripping the damaged master sword.

“LINK! AH!” The ground beneath them began to crumble, the knight turning to find Zelda falling behind him. No, no, no, NO. With his infected arm still clutching his tainted blade, he lunged at the princess in a desperate attempt to catch her. He used his good left arm instead, his unscathed arm, left hand clasping Zelda’s as they both tumbled. A dazzling burst of light blinded them before they succumbed to the impenetrable darkness

Chapter 2: Link to the Past

Chapter Text

When he came to, he groaned, pushing himself up. At first his vision was blurry, waiting a few minutes until it cleared. Link was met with the sight of a clear azure blue sky. He did a double take by the hot glaring sun. Shifting his head, he noticed they were stranded on some island. He couldn’t recognize it, considering the jagged rocks. But he could recognize the rock formation towering over them on a nearby island. The bigger island was Eventide. Wait! Zelda! Link turned to his other side, sighing in relief as he saw the princess’ form. She grunted, opening her eyes as he leaned over to assist her.

“What? What happened?”

Don’t know. Link signed, pressing his good hand to the side of his forehead, shaking his head. To how they ended up on an isolated island near Eventide in the Necluda Sea was beyond him. None of this made any sense. Did either he or Zelda accidentally press the teleportation icon on the Purah Pad? But there was no shrine here, it couldn’t be possible. A flare of pain directed the knight’s attention to his right arm. Oh, that’s right. The gloom had infected him. His eyes widened, noticing his fingers were now completely black. He didn’t need to be a medical professional to know this wasn’t good. His arm was hanging there limply, unable to feel his fingers. This wasn’t normal.

“Oh no,” Zelda stood, eyes wide upon noticing Link’s dire condition. “We need to get you immediate medical attention.” She pulled out the Purah Pad, fingers skirting over the screen to open the map. The princess expected to be greeted by the familiar sight of the blue symbols of ancient shrines and the newly remodeled towers still in progress. However, there was none, not even one. “What?” The map was blank. “No, this isn’t right.” She turned the pad, shaking it. The camera album feature was still working fine as well as the inventory.... well, except for the fact it was empty. There was no food, no weapons, no arrows, no supplies. Whatever had remained previously was gone.

Oh Hylia... How were they going to get Link help now? There was no way to contact anyone. There was no telling how much time the knight had left. For all they knew Link’s paraglider was also gone, along with any of his additional outfits. There was no way both of them could swim across an ocean. Zelda turned facing the direction of Eventide Island. The island didn’t look the same, denser with foliage and palm trees. There was no sign of bokoblins or any humanoid structure.

Link understood the look in the princess’ eyes. Their only option was to swim from here to Eventide. The knight glanced at his half dead arm. That… was still concerning. He wouldn’t be able to swim well with one arm. Returning his attention to the ocean, he noticed the way the waves tossed afro against the jagged rocks, harsh and ragged. It also appeared to be high tide, and the water was rather rough. They’d have to wait if they were to swim across.

Sitting down, Link found his damaged master sword cradling it with his left hand. “I’m so sorry,” he felt Zelda touching his good shoulder. “I wish there was something more we could do. But you’re going to have to wait for a while. Do you think you can do that?” He nodded his head shallowly. Link understood, truly. It was far more dangerous to swim during high tide, especially around jagged rocks and potential rip currents. The princess knelt in front of him, so they were both at eye level. She frowned before pulling him into an embrace mindful of his infected arm. Link shuddered, the barrier breaking as tears leaked from his eyes.

None of this was fair. Why him? He was supposed to be the hero. Yet, he had failed. His right arm was dying, and the master sword was broken. Zelda squeezed his good side as he allowed himself to cry, left hand clutching onto the princess’ shirt.

“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “I won’t leave you alone. I am still here. You have me.” After a few minutes of crying in agony, Link eventually dozed off due to exhaustion.

***

He woke up later to find he and Zelda had both dozed off, leaning onto each other’s backs. The blackness of his fingers was now spreading to his right palm. He closed his eyes, the hot sun scalding his skin. They had no shade, and his mouth was feeling awfully dry, his stomach squeezing with hunger.

SPLASH

Link jolted, a spray of salty water hitting his face. Zelda jerked as well, having been startled awake. “Huh?”

There it was again, an enormous tail lifting above the wild waves. Was that?…. No, there was no way… a spray of water bubbled ahead, revealing an enormous whale-like creature. Zelda brought her hands to her mouth in shock as Link stared, dumbfounded. The huge whale repositioned itself to face them.

There was no doubt about it. The shape of the animal was exactly like the fossils Link once studied. Only this time, it was no fossil but the actual living thing. Something ancient. Something… deemed sacred. Something extinct since millennia. A leviathan.

It swam close to them, well as close as it could get anyway. The whale was white in color, with a blue water-like symbol on the front of its rostrum. Besides it was a smaller form, no doubt a baby leviathan. The large leviathan made a clicking sound. How did the leviathan know they needed help?

The whale blinked slowly; gaze trained upon Link’s right arm. Oh . Of course. It could either smell or detect the gloom infection. Now he could understand why they were reverenced. They were highly intelligent and gentle.

Walking slowly to the edge of the bank until they were waist deep the whale lowered itself for both to climb onto its back. It was large enough for them to sit as the whale rose before flapping its fins and tail to maneuver away from the island.

“Can you take us there?” Zelda pointed ahead in the direction of Lurelin bay. The whale seemed to understand, heeding Zelda’s words. The baby swam close to the mother’s side, enough distance for he and Zelda to reach out and touch it. This was perfect. They’d hitch a ride until they came to land. Come to think of it, the ocean seemed to expand further than Link remembered as if there was more. It took fifteen minutes until they finally reached the shore, stepping off the leviathan. The whale clicked, its baby whistling and doing a flip through the air before they descended back into the depths of the ocean.

The knight and the princess shared a knowing look. Seeing a leviathan could only mean one thing. They were in the past and not a few years or a hundred. They were thousands of years in the past.

Chapter 3: Light in the Darkness

Chapter Text

They were now stranded on the Gogobi Shores. The only thing was, the place was completely wild, with no sign of civilization. The familiarity of the sea faring town of Lurelin was nowhere to be seen.

How? Link signed, cupping both hands outward. The princess immediately knew what the knight was referring to.

Zelda shook her head. She had no clue either. None of this should be possible. They time traveled thousands of years into the past. This had to be an insane dream. However, it wasn’t. This was real. There was no mistaking it.

You have stone? Link faced her. Zelda nodded, pulling out the said stone from her pocket. It was this mysterious object she grasped from the mummy. Whatever it was, it had to be the thing responsible for traveling them into the past.

“I don’t know what this is,” she clarified, “but somehow it has magic.” The princess shook the said stone. It didn’t react. “Perhaps we should figure out a way to harness its power. Maybe we can travel back?”

Link groaned, his good hand clutching onto his stomach. Zelda’s eyes widened with apprehension at their dire situation. How long have they gone without food? Sure, she was starving as well, but Link was gravely injured. His body was probably taking a toll. “Link!” She reached out toward him to catch his good arm before he could fall against the sand. He could only sign clearly with one hand, the other flopping uselessly.

HUNGRY . Link dragged a hand aggressively down his sternum and stomach.

“You’re right, we need to find some food and shelter.” The princess scanned the beach. “I don’t think the beach will be a proper place for shelter under the smoldering sun. There’s no shade.”

Faron. Link signed, lifting his good arm to point ahead. It was still far ahead, but what other option did they have? Faron was a thick jungle, and they’d be able to find lots of shade and hopefully more food and fresh water. They’d have to venture into the dense rainforest.

“Hold onto me,” Zelda held out her arm allowing Link to link his good arm through hers, leaning his weight against her shoulder since he was becoming weak. The decayed master sword was attached to his side as they began the long trek in the direction of the rainforest. There was no dirt path to follow, so it took longer than expected. When they finally reached the dense jungle, they stopped at the bank of Lake Floria. There was no bridge to cross to the other side this time.

“Here,” Zelda gently helped to lay Link down against a tree to rest. He groaned, resting his head back as he gritted his teeth. Zelda could feel her heart squeeze painfully at the sight. She couldn’t fathom how much pain Link was in right now. “Don’t move.” She ordered. “I am going to try to find some fruit or berries.” Of course, she wouldn’t venture far. The princess only hoped the past harbored bananas here as it did in their time. Eventually she found a smaller palm tree with yellow fruit dangling from its branches. Aha! She plucked the bananas from the branches before rushing in the direction of where she left Link.

“I’ve got some bananas.” She set them down, peeling them open to eat. She had to assist Link since he was having trouble using his infected hand and could only properly use his normal one. The princess got up near the bank, scooping some water into her hands to drink and gave some to Link. “We need to find some shelter. Maybe we can figure out some tools to go hunting.”

Fire. Link signed. The princess smiled at her friend.

“Ah, yes of course.” If anyone could survive out in the wild it was Link. He was an expert. They’d need a small fire to keep warm and cook a hasty meal. They’d have to use twigs and branches since they didn’t have a proper weapon to cut down wood. For now, the pair rested against the tree, eating the bundles of bananas. That was until a loud roar split the air. Zelda gasped as Link sat up, his good hand resting upon the hilt of his damaged blade.

“What was that???”

Look. Link pointed to his eyes and down ahead. Zelda slowly stood, following Link’s pointer finger. Dusk was startling to settle across the horizon, the sun making her descent. An enormous monster could be seen far out ahead upon Ibara Buttle. It was unlike anything they had ever seen.

“What in Hylia’s name is that?”

Was it… no it wasn’t a dragon. It wasn’t big, nor did it have a long serpent-like body. The creature harbored three heads each with one large eyeball, four legs with claws, and a pair of wings and a spiked whip-like tail. Zelda noticed each of the heads sizzled with electricity. This wasn’t good. That creature was dangerous. There was no way they could face something like this. Snarling noises directed their attention to the lush bushes. Glowing eyes peered in the semi-darkness, heads poking out from underneath the leaves. Several bokoblins revealed themselves among a silver-colored one with a funny looking antenna with a white pom pom. Screeching directed the two Hylians’ eyes to the sky above them to a flying creature.

How many more new monsters were there? Those flying creatures were much larger than keese and were hauling armored bokoblins. Zelda would describe them as something like a goblin bat. There were too many monsters for either of them to fight, considering the only weapon available was Link’s damaged master sword. Link pulled out the said decayed dagger as Zelda grasped his arm. She tugged him forcefully as he finally got the message.

They had no choice but to flee.

They began to run as fast as they could. The monsters screeched, chasing them. Zelda and Link rounded around a river bend, a group of electric Lizalfos joining the chase. Come on, come on, come on. They needed to find higher ground, anything, something to get away from the monster ambush.

“Over there!” Zelda pointed to a strange structure. The first one they had seen seemed to be made by some civilization. “Let’s climb it!” They hurried close until they set foot inside the outer ring that resembled two dragons. “Wait… huh?” Zelda turned around noticing the monsters had retreated, not daring to follow them to the structure. They howled, dashing away as if repulsed.

Huh? Strange.

Zelda shrugged her shoulders. Whatever this was, the monsters couldn’t step close. “I wonder what this is. It looks like someone built this.” It was an odd shape too. The structure appeared to be a rock shaped like a crystal inside the dragon rings. Link stepped forward to the center as a green foreign icon pulsed in front of them.

Zelda gasped, realization settling upon her face. “It’s ancient Zonai.” She had been doing extensive research into the past. They were an ancient race of Hyrule. The same depictions upon those murals.

You,” a voice pulsed from within the crystal-like structure, something none of them could identify, “who offers the crystal with a pure heart shall be given a light that banishes evil. ” The two shared a confused glance between themselves. A green beam pointed from the center to a glowing crystal off to the side stuck between some rocks.

Link moved to the rocks, gesturing for Zelda to assist him in shoving them away. Sure enough, there was an enormous glowing green crystal. “I suppose we must offer it.” Zelda picked it up, hoisting it into the air as she walked back to the structure setting it down. Link stood behind her, watching in awe as the structure began to glow, a portal-like entrance parting in the front as swirls of green and blue twirled from the top of the structure, some parts making up an ancient language none of them could understand.

“No way, it’s an ancient shrine.”

Shelter. Link signaled. This was better than nothing, and at least they’d be safe from the monsters. Zelda stepped through the portal, Link right behind her. The interior left them dumbfounded, eyes wide at the exquisite display. It appeared as if they were looking at the night sky through a spacious dome that surrounded them, various twinkling lights pulsing around them. The two followed the white stone path to a small stairway with white pom pom-like lanterns. Link’s eyes immediately lit up, noticing the green treasure chest. He hurried close, using his good arm to open it. Inside was an ancient bow of sorts with arrows. Perfect. Now they could go hunting. The knight scrutinized the bow’s sumptuous design. It was green with orange pegs and an eyeball-like form above the arrow crest. He attached the bow to his back with his belt.

They both ventured further on to the larger stairway that led to enormous columns and two statues of a Hylian and Zonai inside one of them. No way. They depicted the same people in those murals they had seen underneath Hyrule Castle. The ring glowed as Link stepped close, pausing in his footsteps.

What was this? He lifted his decayed arm, hesitant at first before gently touching the glowing green screen. The reaction was instantaneous. Pain flared up in his arm as the screen flashed red.

“Link!” He gritted his teeth, his other arm clutching his infected one. The blackness covering his fingers was now spreading to his entire hand. He used his good hand to signal to Zelda not to move and that he was fine.

Foolish. Why did he try to touch it with his gloom infected arm? He held up his left arm instead, pressing it to the screen. This time it didn’t flash red. The hand symbol glowed underneath his hand, the eye above it pulsing before all the symbols dispersed from the screen. The ground began to shake as the column hosting the two statues of the ancient beings shifted into the air, green flecks of ancient Zonai language floating around them.

"Visitor to the shrine of light,” it was the same echoey voice they heard earlier. “You have done well to reach this place. We offer this light that will cleanse you of evil. May the light of blessing grant you the strength you seek.”

The column returned to its previous position, a pillar of light bursting above Link’s head. He lifted his gaze, eyes wide with awe as it collected into a shiny yellow ball. It surged toward Link through tendril-like rays until it formed a glowing orb in front of him. He reached out to touch with his left hand, however, the orb moved to the right instead of his inflicted arm. The knight let out a squeak as the orb dispersed into a beam of light, seeping its way into his gray and black arm until the outer edges blazed with light. A small puff of smoke and malice escaped his arm when the light disappeared.

He could see the princess’ concerned face, lips moving. “Are you okay? What happened?”

Link stared at his arm, befuddled. The pain in his arm was less intense but otherwise still there. The light had offered some temporary relief. He used his other hand to sign this revelation to Zelda. The princess’ eyes softened in relief.

“I am glad that the light offers some relief. But we still need to get you medical attention.” She turned around to face the entrance from whence they came. It was no longer evening now, as darkness began to spread. The night was awake, followed by the howl of wolves, the screeching of some rapid or pained animal and some unidentifiable monster shrills out in the distance. There was no way they could go back out there. Besides, it was late, and Link was already starting to feel the exhaustion seeping into his bones. “I think we should stay here.” The princess knelt upon the ground, Link following suit. They didn’t have any comfortable makeshift beds, but this would suffice. They could rest on the edges of the curved columns.

This was not an ideal place to sleep but at least they were safe from the darkness.

Chapter 4: Malady of Darkness

Chapter Text

By the time morning was nigh, the two ventured on. Luckily, the monsters seemed to be asleep this early. Link and Zelda made sure to drink as much water as they possibly could from Lake Floria before deciding to look for something to eat. The princess went to scavenge some berries while the knight took out the ancient bow he had found inside the shrine. He crept down upon noticing a wild pink heron near the edge of the lake. He held up the bow, using both hands to pull back the string to mount the arrow.

“Gah!” Link grunted, the arrow flopping onto the ground as he was unable to hold up his bow properly, it toppled onto the dirt.

“Link,” Zelda bent down to pick up the bow. “You shouldn’t be using a bow in your condition.” The knight scowled. Zelda sighed, brows furrowing in concern. She understood him clearly; Link didn’t want to be seen as a liability. She could see it in his face. He always had to put up a brave front. They had recently left the shrine this morning to go hunting and salvage food. “Here, let’s switch,” she took the bow from his hands, handing him the mini leaf sack she had created full of bananas to his one good arm to hold. The princess could feel the knight’s eyes on her as she fired the arrow with ease, shooting down the heron. She waded through the shallow water to pick up the animal. Now they had plenty of food for now.

“Wait, do you hear that?” Link paused, straining his eyes to listen. There it was. The distant sound of a creature’s call.

The princess began to hurry toward the braying noise, Link hurrying after her. They came toward a small hill and down below were not seven Dondons but a whole herd of them. There were more of them in the past, no longer endangered. Zelda gasped sharply. This was perfect! The princess walked up to one Dondon as it pressed its snout to her side. They were gentle creatures. “We can ride them.” Zelda began to scour around the area to find whatever twigs she could find, making a makeshift saddle for her and Link to ride the Dondon. This way of travel would be much faster. Once finished, she tied the twigs together into a tight knot like a rope. Zelda turned around, taking the berries from Link, as she strapped the bow to her back. The knight winced, grasping his left arm. The blackness had now crept to his elbow.

This wasn’t good.

“Come on,” Zelda held out her hand to hoist Link first upon the Dondon before pushing herself up. Usually, Link would be the one taking the reins, or they’d be separate. Now this time, it was reversed. She was in charge. Not that the princess didn’t mind. This was necessary. Link was in no condition to steer a Dondon. “Don’t worry, we’ll find you help.” She tried to assure her friend. Link merely nodded his head, closing his eyes.

To be frank, the princess had no idea where to go. Although, Hyrule Castle or the surrounding area would be as good as any for the first stop. There had to be something there. If not, then they’d have to do plan B and try Zora’s Domain. Tugging on the reins to urge the Dondon forward Zelda felt the sweat wringing her forehead. What if they didn’t get Link help in time?

No . She shook her head. There was no such need for frivolous thoughts. She must remain positive. They continued riding the Dondon throughout the day, snacking on bananas and stopping frequently to make a fire and cook the heron and any pool of water they could find. It continued like this for a few days. Occasionally, they’d have to stop as Link felt queasy vomiting up whatever food he ate. Zelda knew they were running out of time.

By the fifth day, Zelda’s eyes widened at the familiar landscape coming up before them. At least, they were entering Hyrule field. “Link! Look!”

“Nnngh,” she turned her head to notice Link’s entire infected arm was completely black. The rest of his body was pale as he slumped against the back of the saddle. He did not look good at all.

He slumped to the side, body slipping from the saddle. “Link!” Zelda reached out toward him, fingers slipping as the knight fell with a dull thud against the hard ground. Zelda jumped off the Dondon, kneeling immediately at her friend’s side. His eyes were closed, pale as a ghost, ail and frail as if dead. “LINK!” She shook him. No response. No, no, no, this couldn’t be happening now. “Please… open your eyes!” She begged, clinging onto the knight’s motionless form, sobs wracking her body as tears streamed down her cheeks. “Wake up!…” The princess pressed two fingers to the pulse point in Link’s neck. She could feel it, his heartbeat although weak. He was still alive.

She lifted her head as she noticed a creature not too far away from them. Except, it was humanoid, walking upon two legs, wearing clothes bizarre as it looked. It was a person from a species she had never seen before. Its ears droopy, somewhat similar to the depictions of the Zonai on those murals. It wore a baggy white shawl, carrying a basket of fruit.

“HELP!” She screamed, desperate. This was her only chance. This stranger was the only person around. “Please…. Help me…” The foreign person turned toward her. Zelda did not know whether it understood Hylian. But what other choice did it have?

The stranger, aka Zonai, walked up close, hesitant at first, probably shocked at their appearance. Her gaze roamed over them, over the Dondon, over Zelda and to Link.

“Please..” Zelda begged, tears pooling from her chin. “He’s dying…” she held up Link, trying to make the stranger understand. “He’s dying…” The female Zonai’s eyes widened upon taking note of the knight’s condition. She knelt, gesturing with her hands. Zelda couldn’t understand most of what she was saying, only bits and pieces as she spoke in foreign tongue, ancient Zonai. The Zonai pulled out something from her pocket, a faint glow illuminating around them as some sort of green cart appeared, one with four wheels. The Zonai pulled out two rockets from her sachet, attaching them to the cart.

Zelda slowly stood, still holding the unconscious Link in her arms as the Zonai gestured for her onto the cart. She stepped on, sitting down as the Zonai grasped the handles in the back, setting the berries aside as she whacked the rockets.

All at once the rockets activated, Zelda used her other hand to cling onto the cart, the other keeping Link secure. They blasted toward the center of Hyrule field until white marble columns came into sight, surrounding a fortress of stone. It was smaller than the actual kingdom of Hyrule itself, but judging from the ancient symbols it was indeed Zonai. The cart stopped as Zelda followed the stranger through the gate, past several Zonai guards.

She looked up, noticing a castle ahead, looking over the center of the small city. On the balcony were two distinct figures, identical to the ones on the murals, one a male Zonai, the other a female Hylian.

Soon the princess was surrounded by Zonai, fluttering voices echoing around her. A loud shout dispersed the crowd as the Zonai she had seen on the balcony appeared before her. To her surprise the Zonai fluently spoke Hylian. Although it appeared to be of a different dialect, she could understand it.

“Who are you?” She lifted her head, noticing all the many pairs of eyes scrutinizing her. “What business do you have with our kingdom?” The Hylian woman appeared from behind him, reaching over to grasp the Zonai's arm.

“My love,” she spoke softly. “There is no need for such hostility. These are no spies.”

“How do you know?”

“Look. He’s dying.” The Hylian gestured to the unconscious Link in Zelda’s arms. “He’s infected.” The Zonai's eyes widened in alarm upon noticing the black arm.

“The malady of darkness,” he muttered under his breath. The Zonai turned, raising his voice to command some guards to immediately inform the healers. Zelda let herself sag in relief as they took Link from her arms, tugging her along. They finally found help.

Zelda watched as Link was set upon a table, various healers working around him. They accessed his arm, scrutinizing him with strange equipment that the princess had never seen before. The Zonai and Hylian woman stood next to her.

“What is his name?” The Hylian woman asked. Zelda was astonished at her beauty. The lady’s hair was shimmering blond, and there were painted symbols on her shoulders and arms, wearing an olive branch headband and fluffy pom earrings.

“Link,” Zelda replied. “He’s my appointed knight, my best friend, hero of Hyrule.”

“Hero? Your appointed knight?” The Hylian questioned. Zelda could see the questioning looks in both of them. “Who may you be if you have a knight?”

These didn’t look like bad people; the princess knew she could trust them. “My name is Zelda, and I am the princess of Hyrule.” The two of them gasped.

“That can’t be possible, I am King Rauru and this is my wife Sonia, queen of Hyrule.” Zelda blinked slowly, staring at them. Those names… they sounded familiar. Could it be? She gasped sharply as realization settled over her brain.

“You’re the first king and queen of Hyrule!” She brought her hands to her mouth in shock and glee. “You are the ones who founded Hyrule.” The two of them tilted their heads in confusion.

“And how do you know this?”

“I know this may be hard to believe but… I’m actually your descendant, thousands of years from the future. Link and I accidentally traveled back into the past.” She dug into her sachet, pulling out the yellow stone. “I grabbed this, and it reacted, and the next thing we knew we were in the past.”

“How’d you get that secret stone?” Rauru narrowed his eyes suspiciously. Sonia held out an arm in front of her husband.

“Wait,” she said, stepping close to Zelda, scrutinizing the secret stone. “She’s telling the truth. She is truly from the future.”

“And you believe her?”

“I know,” Sonia stepped back, smiling softly, one hand touching her own secret stone around her neck. Zelda noticed this same stone, identical to hers. “She’s of my same blood. I just know it, and this stone… It's the same.”

“All right…” Rauru appeared to be slightly skeptical, although he nodded his head in agreement. “If you say so.”

“How did your friend get infected by the malady of darkness?” Sonia placed a hand onto Zelda’s shoulder. The princess let out a deep sigh. She began to recount the events of that day in great depth. Rauru and Sonia’s expressions became solemn upon hearing about the strange mummy they discovered underneath Hyrule castle.

“That is no normal mummy.”

“Huh? Do you know him?”

“That man you describe… is a terrible man. His name is Ganondorf,” Rauru cleared his throat, clenching his fist to his side. “He holds the Triforce of Power and is the origin of darkness.” Zelda’s eyes widened at this. Did this mean… The gloom, the malice… This Ganondorf was behind it all? She scowled, he already sounded like a horrible person if he created darkness. The princess turned to face her unconscious friend. And he was responsible for hurting Link and causing the death of her kingdom and many friends.

“Your Majesty,” one of the healers bowed his head. “I am afraid there is nothing we can do.”

“What?” Zelda’s head snapped up. No, this couldn’t be. The healer bowed their head in shame.

“I am afraid death is the only option.”

“You can’t be serious. There has to be a way to save him. He can’t die!” Her voice was rising, the threat of tears stinging the corners of her eyes.

“There is no way to stop the darkness, soon enough it will spread across his body and reach his heart. He will surely die. He’s corrupted.”

“You don’t understand…” Zelda was unable to hold back the tears. “The fate of the world lies with him… if he dies…” While Zelda knew that she was capable of immense power, they needed Link too. Both of them. She couldn’t fathom losing her best friend. They had gone through everything together. It couldn’t end like this. “We need him…”

Rauru and Sonia glanced at each other, the queen doleful. “Inquire my sister at once,” Rauru ordered. “It’s our last chance.”

Zelda waited, watching as the healers left and the door opened to reveal another Zonai in extravagant clothing. Heavy jewelry made from jade hung from her neck to her chest. There was a long scarf-like shawl around her forearms, an owl-like mask above her head, along with a skin-tight gray bodice, and a white chiton low on her body like most Zonai, with a loin decorated with gems. So, this was Rauru’s sister.

“You requested my presence?”

“Mineru,” Rauru turned to face her, as he began to explain the situation to his sister, including the fact that Link and Zelda were from the future and had traveled back to their time. Zelda could feel Mineru’s eyes on her, before landing on Link’s form.

The Hylian stirred slightly, body lurching as blood spurted from his lips. Several healers frantically moved around, using a cloth to try to stave the blood. Mineru frowned, taking a step forward.

“If we don’t act, the darkness will aim for his heart,” a healer explained.

“I can only see two options,” Mineru sighed, “either he dies or…” she paused, “he loses the arm. It is beyond saving.”

Zelda felt the hot tears burning against her skin. If this was the only way to keep him alive, she couldn’t fathom how Link would take it, losing an arm. He’d have to learn to adapt with one arm. “Please… if he must lose his arm in order to live then do it. Whatever you need to do.”

Mineru glanced down at Link, peering at his arm. “There is actually…. an experiment that I’d like to try.” She motioned with her hand for several healers to assist in handing her the surgical tools. “I’ve never done this before, but it is worth a try.” She waved her hand, “please bring me the construct parts.”

Zelda watched, dumbfounded as several Zonai entered the room carrying robotic looking parts. Was this… their technology? It appeared to be advanced.

“We could replace his lost arm with a construct arm instead,” Mineru said, “that way he will still be able to use both arms.” Zelda’s lips parted in shock and disbelief.

“Is that even possible?”

“Only one way to find out.”

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Rauru stepped toward his sister. “This has never been done before.”

“If it doesn’t work then he will just have to learn to function with one arm. If it does work, then we’ve made a new discovery!” Mineru beamed, eyes glistening with fascination. Her expression then turned serious. “Now if you excuse me. We must quickly do this procedure.”

“Of course.”

“Come now,” Zelda felt Sonia gently touching her back, slowly turning her around. “Why don’t you tarry with us in the palace while we wait.” She nodded her head, following the king and queen out of the room. Zelda could only hope that the procedure would go smoothly.

Please. She prayed silently, momentarily closing her eyes with her hands clasped. Goddess Hylia, hear my plea. Save him.

All there was left to do now was wait.

Chapter 6: Awakening

Chapter Text

Sweat dampened her fur as the healers obeyed her instructions. They strapped Link down, his infected arm out. The Hylian was sedated with anesthesia since it would be bad if he woke up anytime during the procedure. They wore thick gloves and masks over their faces. She picked up the scalpel taking a deep breath. This was it. The surgical knife began to pierce the dead flesh. Mineru gagged at the ghastly sight of blood mixing with charred flesh.

She pressed the scalpel harder until it hit something solid. The Zonai angled the knife to slice around the solid obtrusion. With the other gloved hand, she peeled the dangling rotting flesh away exposing the infected bone. The bone surrounding the infected flesh was black, the upper part still white. She lifted a hand as a healer handed her an osteotome. Mineru began to use it to cut and chisel the bone at the edge of the infection where it stopped. Once she managed to cut the bone clean in half, she separated the arm placing it away into a bin for the others to dispose of. They took it outside the kingdom and burned it.

Mineru then began the tedious task of sealing up the exposed flesh. She used a curette to clean the wound as best as she could, as another healer inserted an IV into Link’s other arm to provide the man some fluids and extra blood. She then moved to the task of constructing an arm piece taken from the Construct Factory. Her fingers moved, assembling the parts together, using a magnifying glass to connect the wires to Link’s exposed nerve endings and muscles in his stub. It would be considered a miracle if his brain learned to control the arm. She supposed there was only one way to find out. Once she sealed off the flesh, having connected the arm to Link’s stub, she cleaned up the excessive blood watching with anticipation. All there was left to do was to see how Link’s body would react with the construct arm. She pulled away, using a thick adhesive bandage to wrap up his shoulder and arm.

Once finished, she discarded her gloves as the other Zonai took out the medical supplies to clean, tidying up the mess from the procedure. Now all was left to do was wait.

***

It had been a painful four hours of waiting. Zelda felt antsy, tapping her foot against the floor. Sonia took her out to the palace garden in hopes to ease her anxiety. It seemed to help a bit, especially with Sonia’s calming presence.

“You care about him, don’t you?”

She nodded, “he’s my best friend.” She couldn’t imagine losing him like she lost the others.

Sonia smiled softly, reaching over the table to touch Zelda’s hand gingerly. “He will be okay. I know it.”

“You think so?” She lifted her eyes to her ancestor. It was still mind-boggling this queen was her ancestor.

“I know so,” Sonia nodded, her face determined. “He’s gone through a lot, and he will come out of this.” Zelda nodded. She was right. Link would be okay, even if it would be difficult learning to adjust to a new machine-like arm. He was the Champion of Hyrule, he could brave anything. “Now, why don’t you have some tea,” Sonia gestured to the table of fine silverware and bowls. Zelda obliged, taking a sip. She and Sonia began to talk, as if they were sisters hanging out.

Sonia told her about her history, of previously being a priestess who married King Rauru, and their notorious romance. Zelda giggled at the story, the anxiety lessening. She turned to glance at Rauru who was standing a little way off, hands clasped behind his back watching the sky.

“Your Majesties!” The two of them turned to a Zonai guard entering the garden. “I have returned with news. Mineru has successfully completed the surgery.”

***

It was dark and cold. An endless void of blackness. Was he dead? He was trapped inside an eternity of emptiness? It didn’t sound appealing. He had no idea how to tell time, nor how long he had been here.

Link ,” he blinked as something warm brushed over him. A burst of dazzling light falling upon him. Oh— how he missed the warmth and light! Was he finally being lifted?

A being appeared before him, her glory defying all description. The Goddess Hylia, with her hands outstretched, wings of light spanning behind her. Her blond hair was glowing, along with the rest of her body. The white dress on her body floated around her like shimmering silk. “ You must wake up. ”

Huh ? What was going on?

Your time isn’t done yet, precious hero .” The goddess spoke, smiling. “ Rise. Awaken,” she lifted her hand again, the light enveloping Link lifting him up into the air. He allowed the goddess to lift him up, until the light burst, and he slammed back inside his body.

All at once, pain assaulted him. A sharp cry escaped his lips. The Hylian could hear murmuring voices, someone shouting yet it felt like he was under water. Everything felt gargled and faraway, muffled.

“Shh, shhh,” a voice of clarity finally registered through his ears. “Easy.” He groaned, shifting his body. It felt heavy, as if it had taken an immense toll. Link forced his eyelids to open, flinching at the brightness. It took him a few minutes to clear his head. He was sitting on a medical cot, in an unfamiliar place with strange appliances around him. Oh, that’s right... Zonai. Lifting his gaze, he met emerald, green, Zelda’s familiar eyes. He could recognize her anywhere.

“Oh, Link!” She was sobbing, hugging him the best she could with his left shoulder. Link moved it to hug her back only to realize his right arm didn’t comply. Wait…. his arm?

It was indeed the once gloom infected arm. Link didn’t know what to expect, a missing limb? However, his arm was replaced by another one that wasn’t organic. He stared at it, unable to comprehend. It hung limply, six green rings with a turquoise light levitating between the rings, connected to a green mechanical hand with fingers made of pegs the edges burnt orange with sharp like claws. Link gritted his teeth, forcing his stub to move.

He winced at the burning pain sizzling his stub as his new mechanical arm reacted to his nerve endings firing the signal to his brain. It was like the feeling of a phantom arm, except the technology of the arm construct responded. The claw-like fingers curled, flexing as his mechanical arm wiggled.

Notes:

Link having a construct arm is such a splendid idea. :)

Chapter 7: Training

Chapter Text

It was strange getting used to a new mechanical arm. Rauru and Sonia allowed Link and Zelda to stay in the guest headquarters since the two didn’t have any other place to reside. They were treated well, having a place to stay in the palace and delicious food. Link couldn’t be happier eating actual food, even if it was different than your normal typical Hylian food. They decided it would be best to stay in this kingdom where they were safe. It also gave them some time to figure out a way to travel back to their own time. It was still a question none of them could answer, not even Rauru and Sonia.

Although Sonia could reverse time to some extent given her abilities, she still didn’t have enough power to go far back. Link found Zelda and Sonia bonding, the two of them seemed to have a close familial bond. Every so often, Mineru would come to check on the progress of his arm. He still needed training to gain full control. Mineru had managed to convince Rauru to allow her to take him to the construct factory to train, and even suggested the king assist as well in their fighting grounds. Link could tell the king was hesitant, reluctant to trust him fully.

It was peculiar seeing constructs everywhere. These were fascinating machines the Zonai created with advanced technology. It was fascinating what they could do. There were soldier constructs who would guard the palace and other sacred sites of the Zonai, while others were servants and fought in combat.

“You’re doing it wrong,” Rauru said, upon watching Link trying to extend his right arm for the fifth time. The construct arm had a unique ability to stretch beyond the length of a normal organic arm. He had yet to master this ability. It would come in handy, since he could use the arm as some sort of hook shot or whip.

“I’m trying,” Link grunted, gritting his teeth. It had taken some time to get used to using his arm. It usually hurt at first, but now it was nothing but a tingling thrum in his stub whenever he used the construct arm.

“You’re not trying hard enough.”

“Brother,” Mineru interrupted them, stepping in between the two as Link grasped his arm. As much as he liked King Rauru he was a bit strict. “Take it easy on him. Of course, he won’t have it down in the first few days.” Rauru pursed his lips before sighing. Link was grateful for Mineru. The two of them got along well, including Zelda.

“Don’t fret,” Mineru whispered to him, grinning. “Rauru will warm up to you eventually.” Link nodded his head. His stomach grumbled as the female Zonai glanced at him, raising a furry eyebrow. “Hungry already?” He smiled sheepishly, rubbing his stomach.

“Starving,” Link replied, “I’m in the mood for raw meat.” He didn’t know why but he had been craving it lately. Oh, the taste of fire and flesh. Blue eyes glanced to see Mineru’s uncomfortable expression and King Rauru’s appalled face.

“Raw meat?” Rauru’s eyes seemed to be bulging from his head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea if you could get sick.” So, he did care about him after all?

“Me? Sick?” Link scoffed, waving his hand. “Never. I’ve a stomach of iron,” he patted it for added emphasis. “I can eat anything.” The two stared at him in unbelief. Link noticed something from his peripheral vision. It was a bird. Aha! The perfect opportunity. He turned around focusing all his attention on using the energy of his Zonai arm. He could do this. The Hylian concentrated on the muscles of his stub, firing the signal to his brain as he commanded the mechanical arm to stretch.

His arm stretched beyond full capacity like an elastic band, the turquoise light pulsating with a flash of energy as he snatched the bird fast enough before it could take off. Link drew his arm back, astonished at what he had done. He did it! Rauru and Mineru gasped sharply, dumbfounded at how quickly Link learned this move.

“See,” Mineru nudged her brother’s arm. “I told you he is special.”

“Hmm, you are right,” Rauru nodded, unable to contain his smile. “This Hylian knight surely is something.”

Link took the Zonaite blade from his scabbard using it to kill the bird and cut it up, crimson staining the grass. Mineru and Rauru cringed in disgust, turning away from the horrid sight of Link chomping upon the raw bird legs. He tore the meat clean off the bone with his own teeth, chewing as if it was nothing. Link hadn’t been kidding. This Hylian could stomach anything.

“And wild,” Rauru commented. “Oh Hylia.” He covered his face as if in shame, his smile only giving him away. “Remind me to never get on the chosen hero’s bad side.”

Mineru chuckled softly. It seemed like they were off to a pretty good start already. “I’ll leave you two to it. In the meantime, I’ll be in my lab, you know where to find me,” she quickly excused herself leaving Rauru flabbergasted.

“Wha? Hey, you can’t leave me with—-” It was already too late, Mineru had left, using a construct vehicle she summoned from her Zonai tablet disappearing from the field. Rauru returned his attention to Link, noticing the dirt, grime and blood on the Hylian’s face and in his tangled hair wisps.  Link was licking the bone clean, sucking on it with a loud pop as he dangled the bone in between his fingers. This man was surely a glutton. Link flicked the bone from his fingers, dropping it onto the ground. Rauru rolled his eyes.

“Do you not have any manners?” He retorted, the corners of his lips curling in amusement. It was obvious Link wasn’t royalty nor of high prestige. Yet, Rauru had never seen anyone eat so savagely.

Shrugging his shoulders, Link replied: “Only when it’s necessary.” He supposed it made sense. Link was a knight; he had his own duty to his kingdom. Rauru could relate, since he was king. They both understood the weight of duty. It was only rare times like this could they let themselves loose. The king supposed it wouldn’t hurt to allow his walls down around this Hylian. He could trust him.

“I understand,” he walked up close until they were only two feet apart. “Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from duty.” Link’s blue eyes widened at his, lips parting in surprise. Rauru chuckled at the expression. “And I think you’ve been training that arm long enough today don’t you think? Let’s take a break. I’d like to show you something.” Link nodded his head, following the king as they came near the closest shrine.

Rauru lifted his hand as it began to glow. Link watched in awe as Rauru’s secret stone began to glow. The shrine began to quake as Link clutched to the side as it began to alleviate into the air whilst Rauru kept his arm stretched. They ascended into the sky until they breached the clouds. The tiny shrine island connected against other islands floating in the sky. Link had no words. He walked toward the edge, noticing the endless view of Hyrule from above.

“Wow. This is…”   “Beautiful,” Rauru answered, standing next to Link. “I’ve always loved the sky. It was where my people began before we formed a kingdom down below.” Link noticed the Zonai fingering his secret stone embedded into the markings of his arm. The stone was similar to the one Sonia had slung around her neck which was identical to the one Zelda had. This one was white instead of yellow. Upon noticing his curiosity Rauru lifted his arm.

“This is a secret stone. A magical stone the goddesses gifted my people. We are to use them for good. They amplify the abilities of one’s magic,” he let out a sigh. “Sadly, some Zonai abused this gift and have since fallen away. It took me a long time to recover from their betrayal and trust again. There’s now only a select few throughout Hyrule I trust to bestow secret stones knowing the evil we will face one day.” He lifted his gaze to the bronze light dotting the horizon. “And I think I shall add you to this circle.”

Link’s eyes widened as saucers, flexing his Zonai arm. He forgot the Zonai didn’t know sign language. Not that he didn’t mind talking. “You’re…. going to give me a secret stone?” He couldn’t believe his ears. Had he heard this right?

“Correct,” Rauru turned to face him. “Princess Zelda already has one and Sonia trusts her. I don’t see why you can’t have one either. I trust you.” Link could feel something warm exploding inside his chest, something akin to pride. “You are valiant and courageous unlike any Hylian I’ve seen. It would be an honor to have you assist us in fighting against the calamity,” he held out his arm toward Link. “What do you say?”

Link’s eyes sparkled, a wide cheeky grin tugging at his lips, unable to contain his enthusiasm. “It would be an honor, Rauru,” he shook the Zonai's arm. “I swear, I will do everything in my power to save Hyrule.” The two of them grinned, shaking hands before they turned to watch the sky before them. The sight was astonishing, nothing Link had ever seen. The sunset bled down into the world beneath them.

Chapter 8: Sage's Vow

Chapter Text

The pair stepped out from the room, feeling several pairs of eyes on them. In some ways they looked unrecognizable. Rauru and Sonia had suggested he and Zelda change into more applicable attire. Now they fit in better with Zonai culture. Zelda was wearing a green dress with white over the top, with a shawl hung over her front with Zonai markings. She also wore stone bead wrists and arm bands with fluffy white pom pom earrings.

Link on the other hand, was dressed in a green shawl hung over one shoulder, leaving the other exposed. The same shoulder with the mechanical arm and visible surgical scars. Around his neck hung a necklace of shark teeth, the tips of his hair wisps braided in front of his pointed ears. His ears were pierced with four sapphire earrings along the length of his ear. The Hylian wore some Zonai styled chiton pants, light brown-like trousers with a Zonai dragon shawl hanging in the front with the triforce design upon the bottom. Around his left ankle was a gold anklet embedded with sapphires, and his left arm and wrist adorned a matching gold band with sapphires above pearl bracelets slung around his wrist to his index finger. His nails were painted blue, the same color of tear-like markings   painted underneath his eyes on his cheeks. Zelda had this same paint marking, except her teardrops were white in color.

Rauru and Sonia seemed pleased by their appearance. “You both look lovely,” Sonia beamed, clasping her hands together. Even Rauru agreed, nodding his head. “This suits you.” Not that Link wasn’t complaining. He was already used to wearing clothing to fit into various cultures. Th e H ylian always managed to pull it off. He puffed out his chest, a sense of pride swelling out from him.

“What can I say? I always have a great sense of style.” He looked good in everything. Zelda snickered at this, shaking her head.

“Come now,” Rauru beckoned. “I doubt you’d want to be waiting any longer.” Link nodded courtly as he and Zelda followed Rauru and Sonia to the throne room. The king and queen sat upon their throne as Zelda stood aside among the gathering crowd leaving Link in the center. There was several Zonai watching from the sidelines as four other members entered the room. They were the other sages which Link noticed all had their own secret stones, a Goron, a Rito, a Gerudo, and a Zora, alongside Mineru. They came into a circle near Rauru and Sonia. Rauru stood slowly as he raised his hands.

“Today, I shall bestow a new sage member.” He turned to face Link who kept his gaze upon the king. “A worthy knight, who wields the sword that seals the darkness.” While it was obvious the master sword was tarnished, Link had told Rauru about the grave situation. He decided it would be best to hand the sword to Mineru to fix whatever they could. “Our light in the darkness. I grant you permission from the goddesses to bestow you a secret stone.” Rauru reached into his side to pull out the said stone. It was forest green in color, twinkling in the light. The knight bowed himself before Rauru , allowing the king to attach the secret stone as an additional earring among his sapphire ones.

“Behold, the Sage of Life, rise,” Rauru beckoned him. He obeyed, raising his chin as Rauru smiled pleased. He gestured for the other sages to join the circle, including Zelda. They all clasped their hands in front of their chest reciting the vow.

“We, the sages, have gathered here, and swear on our lives to serve King Rauru ,” they repeated in unison. Their secret stones began to pulsate with energy, vibrating around them.

Rauru nodded his head, raising his hand into the air. “Together, we shall banish the darkness with never ending light.” The group and sages all pressed their hands together.

“Your Majesty!” A voice declared, shattering the lightful air of the ceremony. A zonai guard rushed into the room, heaving. “We are under attack!” Rauru lowered his arm as the other sages turned, Link’s eyes widening as he reached his hand toward his zonaite sword Rauru gifted him.

“What is it?” The king inquired, expression stoic.

“A swarm of moldugas they’ve breached our borders.” Rauru hurriedly rushed after the guards as the other sages joined him, including Mineru , Sonia, Zelda and Link. They rushed out from the castle, heading toward the edge of the fortress pitched high upon a cliff overlooking Hyrule Field and beyond.

“The moldugas are approaching our position!” Several Hylian and Zonai guards exclaimed. “It’s more than we thought! It’s a swarm!” Link’s eyes widened in horror at the sight down below. He had faced a molduga once long ago, yet they weren’t kidding, there was an entire swarm of them. There was no way any of them could take out that many.

“There are so many of them!” Zelda gasped in shock, bringing a hand up to her mouth in disbelief. There was no explaining how the molduga came out this far away from the Gerudo desert. Rauru lifted his hands, pointing his fingers together as Link and Zelda noticed the other sages doing the same. Their secret stones began to glow in unison. Sonia turned toward them both, nodding her head as she raised her own hand. A glow of yellow radiated from her hand. Link and Zelda glanced at each other, before raising their hands as well. Zelda’s secret stone on her necklace began to glow as a familiar yellow light radiated from her hand identical to Sonia’s. On her right palm the triforce of wisdom made its glowing mark.

Link felt warm energy erupting from his chest and shooting straight through his mechanical arm. The usual turquoise glow burned brighter, the triforce of courage flashing above his palm in the air as green light radiated from his hand. The light from all the sages including them all joined together with Rauru’s creating an enormous blast. Rauru hurled the blast directly at the molduga wiping them all at once. Link’s jaw dropped in astonishment at the potent display of power. It reminded him of the light blasts from the divine beasts. Once it died down, all that remained were the corpses of the molduga completely obliterated.

“What was that ? Who dared to send those molduga our way?” Mineru narrowed her eyes, scowling. Rauru lowered his arm, letting out a deep sigh. Link glanced at the king as his own energy dissipated. He had an inkling of suspicion Rauru knew. The molduga only belonged to the Gerudo desert so that could only mean one thing…. But then why would the Gerudo try to attack them? None of this made any sense. He met the king’s solemn expression.

“I am afraid we must begin to make preparations ahead,” Rauru spoke, his expression serious. He shifted his attention to Link and Zelda. “Tomorrow, we shall begin your sage training.”

Chapter 9: Transformation

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It was quite the night; a lot transpired. Link had been given a secret stone, became the sage of life, a swarm of moldugas tried to attack the kingdom and later that same night a strange male Gerudo appeared in the throne room, apologizing on the behalf of the Gerudo for their assault. Link had never seen a male Gerudo before, while he knew a single male was only born every hundred years. This man, however, didn’t appear to be any normal Gerudo. He was the chief and king of the Gerudo. Link had a bad feeling in his gut during the entire exchange while he and Zelda watched from the sidelines of the crowd as Rauru and Sonia spoke with the man. Occasionally, he spotted the man secretly sparing glances at him and Rauru.

“On behalf of the Gerudo, I apologize for failing to notice the evil intentions of my men,” the man clasped a hand over his chest, bowing his head in a show of fealty. “Please accept this sincere apology.” Judging from Zelda’s mirrored expression, Link could tell this man was lying. None of this was right, yet he didn’t dare to interrupt the formal meeting. “It is our desire to be accepted in alliance with your kingdom. We will serve you faithfully.”

“A welcome appeal, Ganondorf,” Rauru replied. The name itself even gave Link the shivers. Besides, he looked rather similar to the mummy. He didn’t believe Rauru at first, that this Ganondorf was the same mummy they had seen in their own time. Now, seeing Ganondorf in the flesh before his eyes. It only confirmed this notion. This was him, the foretold demise, origin of darkness.

“I will accept your fealty to the kingdom of Hyrule. I understand a single male Gerudo is born among the Gerudo every hundred years. Receiving such an appeal from you, a hero to his people and king by birth. It is reassuring.”

“It is my honor.”

“Your actions today are appreciated, Ganondorf. I look forward to your future endeavors. You may leave.”

“Your Majesty,” the Gerudo bowed himself once more, grasping his massive sword as he left the throne room with the other Gerudo warriors. Once he was gone, Zelda turned to face Rauru.

“King Rauru… I believe this man’s heart holds many dark ambitions,” she said, worried. “His name gives me pause…”

“I am well aware of his evil nature,” Rauru replied. “Which is why I want him close. It will be easier to keep an eye on him.” Link pursed his lips, clenching his fingers as Zelda glanced down. “There is nothing to worry about,” King Rauru reassured. “If he dares to rebel. I have no doubt we will be able to hold against him, with the help of the sages, alongside you and Link of course.”

“Okay,” Zelda nodded slowly, rather hesitantly. She and Link exchanged glances. The knight understood what she was feeling. He felt it too. He reached out to touch her arm, hoping to offer some comfort. She gave another court and a rather determined nod. He only hoped whatever lied ahead of them wouldn’t be too much for them to handle. Rauru excused them to their private guest chambers to settle in for the night. Tomorrow, Link and Zelda would begin their training with their secret stones.

***

Link rose early the next morning, joining Zelda for breakfast. Sonia served them simmered fruit and crab omelet with rice. It was enough to satisfy his appetite. Once finished they returned to change their clothing to something more applicable for them to train in. Link in Zonaite armor along with Zelda. They left the palace, following Rauru and Sonia to the colosseum nearby. There, Mineru greeted them along with the rest of the sages.

Zelda turned to join Sonia and two of the sages, leaving Link with Rauru, Mineru and the other two sages. The sage of sage of fire and water joined him.

“It’s simple,” Rauru explained, “the secret stone amplifies your abilities. You need to channel that energy through the stone.” Link nodded his head as the other two sages demonstrated for him. The knight watched with rapt fascination. After several tries his hand began to glow, the same symbol of the courage triforce flashing once as a green glow radiated around him. It was astonishing how much hidden power he had. A flower bloomed beneath his feet as he stared at the new ability. He was the sage of life; did this mean he harbored the power to create? He moved his mechanical and normal arm as green vines twisted from the glowing energy.

“Woah…” The other sages were also awed in his display of power. So, he could bend and create plants according to will? Awesome!

“Now, why don’t you test it out?” Mineru stepped forward, pulling out an ancient tablet. Link noticed several constructs appearing in the arena down below. Rauru gestured with his hand, beckoning Link.

“Go ahead.” He walked down the steps until he stood in the center of the arena surrounded by construct robots. They began to move as he called upon his power, channeling it through his secret stone amplifying it. Link used his mechanical arm to stretch like rubber, using it like a whip to attack the constructs while the other arm bent plants around him to secure around other constructs obstructing their path. He could hear cheering from above as he easily defeated the constructs.

“Not bad!” He could hear Mineru from above. “We’ll just have to up the game!” Link turned, grinning to himself. This was amazing. Mineru sent some more constructs for him to train. After several hours of hefty training, to the point Link was sweating Rauru suggested they take a break for now. Wiping the sweat off his forehead, Link turned to face the direction of the group. He took the secret stone off his earring, fingering it as it thrummed with energy.

He stared at it, an odd thought coursing through his brain. Did it have a taste? It was gleaming green, reflective in the sunlight. Curious, Link brought it up to his lips to lick. Huh…. It tasted a bit like mint… which was fascinating.

“LINK!” A voice shouted; he lifted his head noticing the horrified expressions of everyone except for Zelda who was confused. “Don’t do that! Don’t—” He opened his mouth to reply, to console them everything was fine only for the secret stone to slip through his mechanical fingers and straight into his open mouth and down his throat.

Oh Goddesses!   He began to choke, pounding his fist against his sternum as screaming sounded above. Switching to his mechanical hand to press against his sternum, he managed to swallow the obstruction in his throat. Oh no... he swallowed it. He’d have to wait to go to the bathroom in order to—

“LINK!” He noticed Rauru and Mineru running toward him. Why was everyone so horrified as if he committed murder? He raised his hand to say he was fine until a scorching pain erupted from his stomach spreading throughout his body.

“AGH!” He doubled over onto the ground, fingers digging into the dirt as his entire body burned, throwing his head back as his vision blurred, body snapping in odd angles as his mind began to distort. All at once, he lost all rational thought of his own being.

Zelda brought her hands up to her mouth in horror as Rauru and Mineru shielded their eyes as Link began to transform before them. A burst of green light erupted, a long slender body shooting into the air as Link’s eyes were no longer his own, changing from Hylian into… Zelda had no words for the transformation she had witnessed.

“What in Hylia’s name?” She gasped, dumbfounded as Link’s body was no longer there, instead a massive dragon in his place. It roared, shaking the ground like thunder shooting up into the air to circle the colosseum. "What is happening??” Did Link turn into a dragon??

“Dragonification,” she heard Sonia mutter from beside her. “A forbidden act that can only be achieved when one swallows a secret stone.” Zelda furrowed her brows, lifting her gaze to watch Link, the forest green dragon roaring above them. Even in dragon form, Link’s construct arm was still there, although much bigger. The topcoat of his scales was forest green, with a light-yellow underbelly matching his horns and spikes. His secret stone could be seen embedded in one horn.

“Can you… change him back?” Zelda questioned hesitantly, worried for her friend.

“We can try,” Sonia nodded her head, “but we need to calm him down.” The princess noticed Rauru and Mineru down below trying to figure out a way to get Link to calm down. Rauru was shouting, pointing at the sages. She lifted her gaze to the top of the colosseum. Clenching her fists, she turned to climb up the steps despite Sonia’s protests.

“Zelda! It’s too dangerous, you shouldn’t!” She ignored their cries as she ran to the top of the colosseum. She took a deep breath, focusing her energy on creating a beam of light. She could do this; she could calm Link down. The princess raised her hand as Link growled, the dragon finally noticing her as he charged toward her.

“LINK!” She called, using whatever power she could to channel the light directly into the dragon’s head. "It's me, Zelda!” The bright light pulsed, slowly dissipating as Zelda lifted her chin gasping. The dragon’s snout had stopped a few feet away from her body, those eyes staring at her. They softened, recognition flashing in them. The dragon gently pressed his claws against the colosseum, careful not to cause damage as he brought his snout closer to Zelda. Zelda gasped in awe, lifting her hand to touch Link’s snout.

“It’s me,” she replied, leaning down to hug his snout the best she could. The dragon rumbled in response, closing his eyes. He pressed his head against her softly, mindful of his enormous size. This was nice.

Notes:

Not expecting this were you? I figured Link should turn into a dragon just like Zelda, and it felt more fitting he would be reckless and swallow the stone. I hope you're enjoying this story! :)

Chapter 10: Forbidden

Chapter Text

“NOW!” Zelda stepped back as did dragon Link. Rauru shouted, lifting his hand alongside Sonia and Mineru as they channeled their abilities to send a beam of light toward Link. This, however, was not like the blast they had sent against the molduga the other day. This was more like an enormous beam of energy. It fell upon the dragon like a pillar of light, making his body glow as he changed. Zelda hurried to move forward to catch Link once he transformed back in order to prevent him from falling off the edge of the colosseum. The knight grunted, grasping onto Zelda until she gently set him back onto his feet keeping a steady hand on his shoulder despite his buckling knees. Once Link finally regained his balance both of them turned to find Rauru, Mineru and Sonia rushing up the top level of the colosseum. The rest of the sages lingered behind them.

“What in hylia’s name were you thinking?!” Link blinked slowly, holding out his palm that clutched his secret stone. Rauru was indeed pissed, and Mineru looked like she had a panic attack, her face rather pale.

“Never under any circumstances do you ever swallow a secret stone,” Mineru explained, breathing heavily. “Dragonification is forbidden.” Zelda could see the bewilderment on Link’s face.

“It’s not his fault,” she reasoned, even though she knew Link could be reckless at times.

“We understand it was an accident, but this must not happen again, understand?” Rauru narrowed his eyes.

“Why?” Link questioned; his voice croaky due to the transformation he endured. Rauru sighed, closing his eyes as Sonia smiled sadly.

“You see,” Mineru lifted her hand, “Long ago, our civilization the Zonai first began as a tribe underneath the ground in the depths until we moved to the sky where the Goddesses blessed us with prosperity. Then we moved to the surface as our civilization began to expand. We decided to elect the chief as king and establish the land of Hyrule. Rauru, our king, was chosen. A few Zonai lived in the dense jungles, some near Death Mountain and some in the east.

In each of these regions a chieftain was established over that area. They were close friends of Rauru, Zonai people we trusted, Lanayru, Faron and Eldin. They were highly respected, and their lands were named after them. Not long after Hyrule was established, we expanded the kingdom to the skies above. Rauru gifted the chiefs secret stones. At first these sacred items were used respectfully. However, Eldin was the first to be dragonified when he curiously swallowed the secret stone. It wasn’t long after that they sought greater power after the knowledge of Eldin’s transformation.

After beholding such a feat Rauru pleaded to the Gods for assistance. They were angry and told him that the secret stones were not to be handed out lightly, lest their powers be abused in the wrong hands. Rauru then inquired of the Gods of what could be done to reverse the forbidden act of dragonification. The Goddesses then shared a method and told him that it would only work if the person had a strong enough willpower and desire to change. Otherwise, they could not be changed back to their previous state. Rauru then asked if it was possible for the three Zonai to be returned to their original state. The goddesses replied that they couldn’t due to the Zonai’s desires of their hearts. Since then, dragonification has been forbidden in our kingdom. Many Zonai followed them and were lost. It is forbidden because one completely loses their true self in the process.” A brief silence fell over them as Link blinked, raising his brows.

“But… I am still me,” he gestured to himself. “You… transformed me back.”

“Because that is the method that the goddesses shared with Rauru, the combination of light, time and spirit power,” Mineru explained. “Plus, your desire to change back.”

“Desire?...” Link gazed at his mechanical palm, curling the finger pegs. Zelda could tell that the gears were churning inside Link’s brain. She frowned, a thought occurring to her.

“You say that when someone is dragonfied they lose themselves,” Rauru and Mineru nodded in confirmation. “Yet… I managed to calm Link down,” she gestured to her friend. Rauru and Mineru frowned at this, perplexed.

“What are you saying?” Sonia questioned. Link’s blue eyes widened, struck with a wild thought.

“Has anyone ever been able to control it?” The two zonai and the hylian queen froze, silent. Link took their silence as a no. He stepped forward holding out his hands. “While yes I did lose control there, but when Zelda calmed me down, I had a sense of clarity.” He noticed Rauru’s skeptical eyes.

“This is not a game to be toyed with,” Rauru said, clenching his fists. “It is far too dangerous.”

“There has to be a way, a way to learn to control the dragonification.” The three of them stared at him as if he spewed blasphemy from his lips.

“Impossible.” Link shrugged his shoulders.

“And yet, this should’ve been impossible,” he lifted his mechanical arm for emphasis. “Who says I can’t do it?” Rauru heaved a heavy sigh while Mineru closed her mouth contemplating.

“But it is forbidden…”

“Wait,” Sonia raised her hand, halting her husband. “He has a point.” Rauru’s jaw dropped in disbelief, staring at his wife. Mineru glanced at her, ears twitching. Sonia turned to face her husband and sister-in-law. “We do not know what lies ahead of us. This darkness may be something beyond our comprehension. While this may be forbidden, perhaps this can be excused upon Link’s behalf,” she gestured to the blond knight. “After all, we need him to defeat the incoming darkness. Besides,” she turned around to face him, smiling. “I trust him. I don’t think he would abuse this power. He’d only use it to benefit us. I have no doubt that the goddesses trust him. They can make an exception for him. After all, he can do anything that he sets his mind to.” Rather hesitantly, Rauru dragged his fingers down the side of his face, his closed third eye twitching. Link waited with bated breath until Rauru nodded.

“All right, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.” Link couldn’t help the jubilant grin that spread across his face, fist pumping the air. Zelda beamed at him, pleased. “First things first. Tomorrow, you will pray to the Spring of Courage, “ Rauru added, “to receive the goddesses’ blessing to pursue this act. And perhaps, they’ll also guide you in this process.” Link nodded his head in confirmation.

“Deal.”

Unbeknownst to the group and the sages, a yiga clan spy watched from behind a pillar near the bottom of the colosseum having witnessed the transformation. He turned, quickly disappearing out of sight, returning to his destination in the Gerudo Valley.

Chapter 11: Spring of Courage

Chapter Text

The next morning, Link awoke early to travel to the Faron region to the spring of courage. Rauru, Sonia and Zelda accompanied him along with the other sages. He and Zelda had passed through this region when they first came to the past. Yet, they missed the location of the spring considering the dense thickness of the jungle. It was much vaster than it was in he and Zelda’s time. The group stopped behind him as Link paused once he came near the familiar dragon statue. He turned around to face his friends, Rauru nodded his head in approval. This was it.

Taking in a breath he trudged through the grass, making his way to the small cavern where ancient pillars and columns stood. This time, they weren’t cracked or broken. They looked rather new as if this spring was born not too long ago. His bare feet dipped delicately into the warm spring, floating lilies brushing his ankles as he waded in the water until he stood near the statue of the Goddess Hylia.

It was here he’d offered Farosh’s scale to unlock a shrine. Other times he’d pray here for additional courage from the goddess. This time, he was asking for permission. Link kneeled upon the stony ground somewhat wet from the water. He clasped his hands above him, bowing his head in humble reverence.

“Goddess Hylia,” he prayed, lifting his head. “Please grant me your blessing.” He could feel his secret stone earring jangling slightly from his earlobe, its energy pulsing. “To pursue a forbidden act.” He removed his hands to retrieve the earring from his ear, holding it up toward the statue. “If this is the only way to beat the Demon King,” he held the secret stone higher feeling its pulse within his palms. “Please grant me permission to use this power of dragonification.” The statue began to glow, a pillar of light descending upon him.

Link raised his eyes, noticing a glowing being before him. Her beauty defied all glory and description. Her hair and dress pure white as snow. “Link,” her voice was silky. “Child of Farore’s Gift. I have no doubt that you are worthy to exercise such godly power. I know you don’t defy the power of dragonfication.” She smiled at him, genuine. “I grant you my blessing to use it to save Hyrule from the demise of darkness.”

“Thank you,” Link bowed once more. “I am honored to receive your blessing.” He could feel the ecstatic joy bursting from inside. Link lifted his gaze before the goddess could float away. As if sensing his thoughts, the goddess held out both arms.

“Don’t worry, you will not be alone navigating this uncharted territory. Seek out knowledge from the guardians of the springs of courage, power and wisdom. They will guide you.” The goddess’ light began to fade as did the pillar of sunshine, returning the statute back to its original state. Link slowly stood, grateful that he received Hylia’s blessing. Now all that was left was to seek out the guardians of the springs. Link had an idea of who they could possibly be, yet he’d have to make sure. The knight returned to the gang anxiously waiting for him as he divulged his conversation with the goddess and received her blessing.

“The guardians of the springs?” Zelda tapped her chin. “In the future they were the dragons Naydra, Farosh and Dinraal. Are there any dragons in this time with those names?” She inquired.

“No,” Rauru shook his head. “We don’t know anyone with those names.” Link and Zelda glanced at each other, frowning.

“Perhaps they are the same beings?” All heads turned to face Mineru. The Zonai shrugged her shoulders. “The guardians of the springs here are Lanaryu, Faron and Eldin. The Zonai that dragonified themselves. They always guard the springs of their regions. Perhaps, this Naydra, Farosh and Dinraal that you speak of are Lanaryu, Faron and Eldin?” Zelda’s eyes widened at this, nodding her head at this discovery.

“That’s right! Perhaps their real names were lost in history,” the princess exclaimed. “So, they were given new names. It makes sense.”

“We do have one issue to address,” Sonia pointed out, “we cannot communicate effectively with dragons.”

“I have an idea,” Link pointed a finger, “I can talk to them in dragon form.” The knight could feel many pairs of eyes blinking in surprise. “It’s worth a shot.”

***

This was how the knight found himself atop Farosh Hill, the group surrounding him as they waited patiently, keeping watch on the sky until a familiar slender figure appeared. It was none other than the dragon, Farosh... aka Lanaryu. The dragon appeared to be younger, which made sense.

“Everyone ready?” Link nodded his head as he could feel Rauru touching his shoulder. The Zonai king’s eyes were filled with determination.

“You must focus on the task at hand.” Link nodded his head in understanding. He knew what needed to be done. Zelda stepped closer to him; the princess ready to console him once more if needed to help him gain control of his bearings. Link took off the secret stone earring, dislodging the metal from the top as he put it away, deliberately swallowing the secret stone this time. It was a tad bit uncomfortable swallowing something so large. Yet, Link had eaten far worse. The energy sizzled from his stomach, shooting into his veins as it began to spread throughout his body. Link craned his neck up, gasping as he could feel the transformation changing his body. The others stepped back, watching in awe as Link transformed into a dragon for the second time. Link roared, raising his claws as Zelda stepped close to touch his side offering her comfort. It seemed to do the trick in helping to ground Link once again. The dragon stopped roaring, lowering himself to gaze at Zelda and the others.

It was strange once he gained better clarity. The eyes of a dragon were nothing like his own. He could see, smell and sense everything differently. He opened his jaws to talk, only for a low rumble to escape. Huh. Well, he was a fantastical beast now so perhaps he didn’t need speech to communicate. A loud roar shook the sky, Link turning to notice Lanaryu charging straight at him in high speed. He ducked out of the way as Zelda and the others used their secret stones to evade the zonai dragon. The dragon turned toward them, snarling. Link could feel a surge of adrenaline shooting through his slender body.

STOP. He conveyed all strength to enunciate the message as he crashed against Faron, knocking the dragon away from his friends. Instead of clawing back as Link expected, the dragon recoiled away.

Who are you?  The message was loud and clear, yet Link didn’t hear any spoken word.

Huh? The dragon circled him, narrowing its eyes. It eyed his mechanical arm as if puzzled. Link swayed his body, facing the dragon the best he could. He opened his mouth, yet no word came out. The other green dragon paused, tilting its head slightly.

We do not use speech to communicate, child. Link froze, staring at the dragon. Wait.... were they communicating telepathically? The dragon lifted itself up, rearing its head. I am Faron, the words were loud and clear in his mind. It was then that Link realized that this dragon was male, judging from its masculine tone. Guardian of the Spring of Courage. Why do you seek my presence?

Link could feel the joy bubbling from within him, escaping his mouth in a low chur. I am Link, he thought, noticing the recognition in the other dragon’s eyes. It understood him. I am a Hylian. Faron narrowed his eyes once more, letting out a quiet growl.

A Hylian tampering with the power of dragonification?

I received Hylia’s blessing to exercise this power, Link explained hurriedly. I was told you and the other guardians could help me learn to control this power. The dragon seemed to scrutinize him, circling him again. Link couldn’t imagine how this looked to his friends. They were probably tense. The dragon sniffed his mechanical arm. Link flexed it nervously. It gave off a sudden glow, surprising Link himself. The triforce of courage flashed above his palm. Faron leaned back as if surprised.

It’s you, the chosen hero of legend. Link blinked, confused. He must’ve let out a strange noise as the dragon floated closer to him. The Goddess told me of a prophecy, two hylians one gifted with Farore’s gift, and the other a descendant of Hylia. I never expected to see you here. You are not in your time.

This dragon was smarter than it looked. Link gave it that much credit. Then again, they were also around during his time. So perhaps... it was fate meeting it again. Only this time, he could actually properly communicate.

I need your help if you’re willing, Link continued, the darkness that plagues this land will destroy the past and future. I need to learn to control this form. He pressed his mechanical arm against his broad dragon chest, feeling the thick scales underneath. So, I can take down the Demon King, once and for all.

Faron gave a slow nod of his head. It would be my honor to assist the chosen hero.

Chapter 12: Dragon Quest

Chapter Text

You’ll guide me to the others? Link asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement. This interaction was going better than he expected.

Indeed, Faron replied. I can only tell you so much. But the others will provide their wisdom. My power is lightning, Eldin is fire and Lanaryu is frost. There is no telling what yours is. I suppose we shall find out.

Link gazed at his mechanical arm, reaching up to tap the claw against his horn where his secret stone sat. Well, he was the sage of life. He harbored plant-like powers so perhaps it was something similar in dragon form? He let out a low rumble turning to face Zelda and the others below. Link slowly nodded his head to convey to his friends that he’d be all right.

“Go,” Zelda beamed. “Do what you need.” Faron ascended higher into the sky, Link following him as they disappeared through the clouds. It was a wonderful broad view of Hyrule from above. Link followed Faron, until they neared Lanaryu. A blue dragon could be seen, circling Pierre Plateau. The dragon paused upon noticing them as Faron directed her his message.

Lanaryu, this is the chosen hero. The green lightning dragon began to explain. Link could feel the other dragon’s eyes studying him in awe.

A Hylian who became a dragon? The chosen hero of legend? She rose, floating close to Link. It is an honor to meet you, sir Link. There was no mistake that these Zonai were used to such extravagant company. Link blinked slowly as Faron suggested they also get Eldin. He followed the two dragons near Death Mountain where Eldin resided. The fiery red dragon did not take a liking to Link at first. He was rather a bit stern, regarding Link with scrutiny.

I am honored to be in your presence. Link bowed his head as he possibly could. Could you three teach me to learn to control this form?

For the span of several days, Link returned to his designated spot in Hyrule Field where he transformed into a dragon to resume his dragon training. It became easier to control his thoughts and emotions as a dragon. Lanaryu told him he’d experience instincts he’d need to reign in. It was difficult at first, learning to control these animalistic instincts rather than letting them take over control. Link didn’t want to hurt anyone while in dragon form, not unless he could do something about it. After several tries, he no longer needed Zelda to assist in calming him down. Link found a better outlet to let his dragon loose, shooting up into the air as he focused his attention on his surroundings instead as Lanaryu and Faron told him.

Link learned to maneuver his body readily through the air and pick up speed. Faron taught him that he must glide with the wind currents as if he was one with the sky. As the three dragons mentioned, the sky was a blueprint that he needed to learn to master. The ways the clouds rolled, an incoming storm, the rain that pattered upon the world down below and the blazing sun. The Hylian quickly learned to allow the sky to guide him. The sun’s rays arching over the horizon served as a point that he could use to know where he was and at night, he could use the stars. From high above, Link could see the vastness of all Hyrule. It was neat.

How do you control your powers? He turned to face Faron and Eldin. Lanaryu was nestled upon the grass down below letting out a big yawn. Eldin let out a low growl, opening his jaws to billow out flames toward Lanaryu. The said frost dragon yelped, dodging the flames as she snarled in response mist steaming from her nostrils as she froze the flames that were dangerously close to her body.

Easy. Link heard Eldin’s voice echo through his mind. You must focus your mind on what you want to do.

Letting the energy channel through your body, Faron added. Like this. Link watched Faron bare his dragon fangs, certain scales of his slender body glowing. Sure enough, fizzles of electricity cackled around him. Faron’s green scales were glowing, along with his horns.

Your mind and emotions are key, Lanaryu piped in, floating up to hover near Faron. The Hylian saw the way the blue dragon eyes were calm and focused, moving her jaw with precision as a puff of frost fragmented the air in front of her. Once you master this ability, you may also command the element of your power. Lanaryu rose higher into the sky near some dense clouds. Link watched in awe as she was able to command the droplets in the clouds to freeze at will, maneuvering them according to her instruction. They obeyed her, the element of water subject to her command. Now Link understood why some hylians referenced the dragons as holy beings.

Link closed his eyes, focusing on channeling energy through his body from the secret stone. The stone began to glow, reactive to his emotions. A yellow puff erupted from his nostrils as he opened his eyes. Did he do something? Link gazed around in confusion, only to notice the three dragons' attention down below them. The hylian dragon turned his body, letting out a gasp at the sight beneath him. New plants and trees had grown in the field underneath him. Those weren’t there before.

Do that again, Faron’s voice was filled with enthusiasm. Link diverted his attention down, allowing the energy to pulse in his body. The plants down below began to grow, vines swirling and moving.

You can control plants, Lanaryu muttered in astonishment. Fascinating. The triforce of courage was flashing over his mechanical paw. He supposed it made sense. Link had grown deep in the countryside of Hateno. Ever since he was a child, he loved wandering the woods and forest. They were a sanctuary where he sought comfort and solace away from the burdens that weighed heavy upon his shoulders. While many warned him of the dangers of the wild, he was always drawn toward nature. Adventure coursed through his veins. It didn’t faze him. His courage and bravery had always been outstanding. No wonder he was born with the triforce of courage and the master sword had chosen him. The dragon paused, sighing. Oh right, the damaged master sword. He’d have to tell Rauru and Mineru. They’d have to do something regarding the damage of the legendary sword later.

Link descended closer to the ground, flying above the trees he created as he channeled his energy to command them. They twisted into an enormous arc as he watched with rapt attention at his display of power. Green light pulsed around him, sharp vines and leaves sharp as blades shooting from his open mouth.

The other three dragons began to circle Link, engaging him in a fight. Link swerved to the side to dodge the incoming flames and piercing icicles and zaps of electricity. He stretched forth his mechanical arm to seize Lanaryu, throwing her down into the ground beneath them. Thank Hylia that the others were watching from a far distance away. Link could sense other pairs of eyes watching from afar. To strangers, it was probably rare to see not only three but four dragons fighting one another. Yet not a single soul dared to intervene. After all, they were only training.

Chapter 13: Calm Before the Storm

Chapter Text

“Master Ganondorf, the spy has returned.”

The Gerudo male hummed, fingers tapping the gold arm rest of his throne. The Yiga Blade Master stepped aside to reveal the smaller and nimble Yiga spy. The man bowed himself to the ground. Ganondorf raised his chin, his other hand taking a swig of his red drink in a black goblet.

“Tell me, did you acquire any information regarding those magical stones Rauru and his weaklings possessed?”

“Indeed,” the spy replied, lifting his head, his mask facing his master. “They amplify the power of one’s abilities. Rauru has one, including his wife Sonia and these other creatures that call themselves sages. However, it seems this male hylian… named Link who is close to Rauru and Sonia, alongside a female Hylian named Zelda also possess secret stones. This… Link… has managed to utilize the full potential of his secret stone by transforming into a dragon.” Ganondorf’s fingers tightened around his goblet.

Ah, so Link was that puny male Hylian he had seen earlier while in Rauru’s throne room. The king had his suspicions he had seen Link and Zelda before. He didn’t need to be told to know Zelda bore the triforce of wisdom and Link the triforce of courage. After all, they were all connected in some morbid way. They were gifted specific powers directly from the goddesses. Ganondorf scowled, glowering at his now empty goblet tossing it aside. If there was one thing he knew, he needed to overthrow the kingdom of Hyrule and kill Link and Zelda. Then the whole world would be bathed in darkness.

“You say Link turned into a dragon?” Ganon questioned, shifting his attention to his spy. The Yiga member nodded his head.

“He swallowed his secret stone.” A wicked grin sprouted on the man’s lips, letting out a malicious bubble of laughter. Perfect. All he needed to do was to get his hands on a secret stone, only then could he achieve ultimate power as the Demon King.

Link had grown accustomed to living amongst the Zonai inside Rauru and Sonia’s palace. In a way, the king and queen treated both Zelda and Link as if they were their own. The two had said their biological children were away in a far distant land so having them around brightened company. It was odd considering the constructs were like servants. There were different kinds, Steward, Culinary, Maker and Soldier Constructs. It was mind boggling how advanced Zonai technology was.

Sometimes they’d chill in the garden, Sonia teaching Zelda to better control her time powers, making objects return to their original space in time coaxing their memories. While Link headed out other days to train with Rauru and the other sages using his plant abilities from his secret stone, besides the fact that he also trained with the three dragons. He had come to learn to control his dragon form as if it was second nature. In order to transform back into a dragon, he had to use his own power upon himself, to will his form to change back. It was difficult at first, yet he finally got the hang of it. He returned to the palace alongside Rauru as they found the women in the garden.

Link took a seat next to Zelda underneath the small pavilion. Sonai lifted her hand as a culinary construct came near them as she commanded it to cook a meal. Rauru and Sonia had insisted, knowing fully well that Link could cook himself. They had seen the hylian scarf raw meat over a fire. The hylian knight watched the zonai pick up a ladle, moving its mechanical arm over a portable cook pot. Link titled his head watching with fascination as the bottom part of the pot erupted with small blue flames heating up the pot. The culinary construct could sense Link’s penetrating gaze.

“While I do not eat,” the construct spoke, “I understand the techniques of cooking.” The construct turned, pulling out new ingredients Link had never seen before. It resembled a yellow flower with black streaks. Come to think of it, he had seen it around on the floating islands in the sky. “This is a sundelion, it is useful for healing from gloom.” Turning around, the construct began to dig through their basket of various ingredients. Link hopped off his seat, standing close by to hover. He could hear Zelda and Sonia chuckling, Rauru shaking his head though the king smiled at the sight. Could you blame him? Link was a glutton, of course he needed to know about these new food ingredients!

“What is this?”

“That is a dazzlefruit,” the construct replied. “It is highly charged with light. It is useful when you break it and it’ll release sparkles that blind nearby monsters. When cooked it strengthens and replenishes the heart.”

“Woah, awesome,” Link leaned back on his heels, watching the construct pull out several items from the basket adding them to the cook pot. “What are you making?” The construct had thrown a whole pumpkin, some hylian rice and goron spice. It summoned another portable pot, adding a hylian herb, hylian rice, a bottle of fresh milk and a sundelion.

“Vegetable Curry and sunny porridge,” the construct responded, mechanical fingers picking up a knife to cut the pumpkin and using the ladle to stir the ingredients. “And apple pie for dessert.” Link’s blue eyes sparkled, mouth already salivating. The others chuckled, once the construct finished cooking their meal Link hastily returned to his seat with eagerness. The construct placed the vegetable curry and porridge into their bowls and plates, handing them their silverware. Link immediately dug in, face brightening at the delicious flavor.

“Mmmm!” Now these were new recipes he’d have to try sometime. Link savored every bite, until the best came for last. The construct baked an apple pie right then and there using the portable pot. It was different considering the construct used golden apples instead.

“Your construct is excellent,” Zelda complimented, noticing Link scarfing up every crumble of remaining pie on his plate.

“We are pleased to hear,” Sonia leaned her chin in her palm, glancing at Link who was apparently in paradise. “We don’t mind spoiling you both,” she smiled fondly. “After all, your training has paid off. You both deserve a little break.” Zelda smiled, feeling something warm swirl inside her chest. Sonia was a wonderful woman, like a second mother considering her own mother died young and she only had Urbosa. And Rauru… he was a kind fatherly-figure to both her and Link. She glanced at the king, noticing him handing Link another slice of pie. The knight accepted it gratefully, digging in.

It was moments like this that were precious. If only it could last forever.

Chapter 14: Treachery

Chapter Text

The next morning, Link set out to complete his last training session with the three dragons, leaving the others behind at the palace. The sages had returned to their regions whilst Zelda decided to assist Mineru in her lab. After all, Mineru was working on a construct project to which the princess happily obliged considering she was a tech geek. With her knowledge, together she and Mineru managed to build a battle construct Mineru would use for future reference. Rauru and Sonia left them to do their own thing, the king and queen attending their royal duties for the day.

For several hours Zelda remained with Mineru, until it began to near dusk. The princess lifted her head as a sudden feeling washed over her. Something didn’t feel right. She turned, excusing herself from the table where Mineru tinkered with her construct.

“I am going to find Queen Sonia,” she replied, slowly sitting up. Mineru nodded her head, needing no further explanation as Zelda left the room. She walked up the stairs to the first floor, finding Rauru in the courtroom talking to several subjects. After waiting until it was polite to interrupt him, she asked the zonai king where his wife was.

“Ah, Queen Sonia took a walk outside,” Rauru replied, “she said she needed some air. Did you need to ask her something?” The goat tilted his head in question.

“Something isn’t right,” the blond hylian replied, hastily removing herself from the room and away from the king’s concerned expression. She hurried down the hallway, her heart pounding inside her chest. She needed to get to Sonia, she needed to—

Zelda paused upon setting foot on the balcony outside the stone palace. Her eyes widened in horror as Sonia stood at the front of the steps, turning around to face… There was no mistaking it. How was this possible? The other being looked exactly like her. Identical.

“We are alone as you requested,” Sonia replied to the imposter. “What is it that you wanted to discuss with me in private?” The other Zelda let out a bitter laugh, lips curling in a sneer.

“You are far too trusting.” The imposter reached behind her to grasp a curved scimitar. It was then Princess Zelda knew she needed to act. The blade went flying, spinning through the air hurling itself at Sonia. Zelda stepped forward, gasping.

“NO!” She lifted her hand, calling forth her power to stop the flow of time. The scimitar froze a few inches away from Sonia’s head, having turned bright yellow due to the stasis power. Sonia turned around, as if she knew the imposter wasn’t the real Zelda, her gaze flitting over the real Zelda before moving to the imposter before them.

“I’m surprised to hear you say such a thing. I know what you are,” she faced the imposter, “a puppet of Ganondorf.” Zelda stepped out closer to them, the imposter shifting its attention to her as Zelda recalled the scimitar to return to the fake Zelda and fall upon the floor. She kept her hand up, the yellow glow pulsing. It was strange gazing at herself. Although, this wasn’t her. Someone had been trying to scam her. If Sonia knew it was the puppet of Ganondorf Zelda, she wouldn’t be surprised. This was an evil man of course he’d try to commit fraud.

“Did you think we wouldn’t be able to see through your deceit?” Zelda scowled in disdain. The puppet’s eyes glanced down at its fallen scimitar before letting out a bone-chilling laugh. Its body began to disperse with crimson and black tendrils. Zelda stepped in front of Sonia protectively, keeping her hand up. The imposter disappeared without a trace except for the scimitar.

A whooshing sound caused Zelda to whirl her head toward the sound, only to find a large figure spawn from behind Sonia. The sound of flesh tearing echoed through the nightly air as the blade pierced through Sonia’s stomach. Zelda watched in terror as crimson stained the queen’s green and white dress. The blade retreated as quickly as it came, blood spurting from the wound as Sonia’s body fell forward. A black hand snatched Sonia’s secret stone necklace as her body thudded against the stony ground.

“SONIA!” Zelda fell to the fallen queen’s side, a puddle of blood forming beneath them. “No, no, no, no…” She tried her best to recount Sonia’s memory to reverse time. However, it wasn’t working. She didn’t have enough power to do so. “NO!” Tears streamed down her cheeks as the queen coughed, blood trickling out from her lips. The queen brought a shaky hand to the gaping stab wound. The princess shifted her gaze to the looming figure, noticing none other than Ganondorf holding up the secret stone. His grin was face-splitting, a wicked troll face on his features.

He began to laugh, a sound that made goosebumps rise on Zelda’s skin. Ganondorf lifted his right hand, the one not clutching Sonia’ secret stone but the bloodied blade that he stabbed her with. He lifted it up, bringing it down for the final blow. Zelda shut her eyes, expecting the blinding pain and the spray of blood. Fortunately, she and Sonia were yanked violently away from the vile man and out of reach. She gasped, opening her eyes to notice a vine had twisted itself around her calf and Sonia’s body tugging them back. Green eyes followed the direction of twisted twigs before landing on the figure of her friend and appointed knight. He was heaving, as if he had run the entire way here.

Link ,” the plea gurgled from her lips. Blue eyes glanced at her before shifting to Sonia’s weakened form, blood now soaking her dress and spilling onto the stone floor in between the crevices and cracks. The balcony was painted with a trail of blood. Link allowed his glowing hand to send some green light into Sonia. It seemed to do the trick. The wound was no longer bleeding out.

Ganondorf let out a displeased sound, his expression enraged. Link drew the master sword from his back, holding up the damaged blade. It certainly wasn’t enough, yet it was the only weapon he had on him since he left the others behind not wanting to carry such luggage to his dragon training earlier. Now he realized he probably shouldn’t have done this. He scowled, trying not to let fear show on his face despite his broken sword. Ganon glanced at it, letting out a sharp barking laugh. He raised the hand that held the stolen secret stone. It began to expand in his palm before securing itself upon the crown on his forehead. Zelda clutched Sonia tighter, the queen fighting to stay conscious as Link stepped in front of them protectively. A dark cloud surrounded them, twirling crimson tendrils around Ganon’s form as he began to transform inside a red tornado. The glowing full white moon began to turn red as blood high in the sky above. Once the tornado cloud dissipated, Ganon turned toward them. His form was larger now, his red hair longer and glowing in the darkness. His outfit resembled gloom and malice. He lifted a hand, a surge of gloom shooting into the air. All of them could feel it. The awakening of the gloom spreading throughout Hyrule judging by the horrific screaming in the distance.

“Sonia!” Rauru had finally arrived upon the scene rushing up toward Zelda and Sonia.

“You are nothing,” Ganon sneered, lifting a finger to point directly at Link. “Do you think you can face me with the broken sword that seals the darkness? It is no match for my power. Now you will bow before the Demon King.” He moved his hand, barreling a blast of gloom toward them. Link lifted his mechanical arm, the one that wasn’t holding the damaged master sword. The triforce of courage flashed as he formed a protective barrier of twigs to block the gloom. While it did the trick, he could see the darkness slowly corrupting the twisted vines turning them black. Link gritted his teeth trying to hold back the seeping corruption at bay.

“You will all die!”

Zelda tugged the purah pad from her side, quickly pulling up the map to select a shrine to teleport. Come on, come on, this still must work. She and Sonia’s bodies began to glow blue as she raised her voice. Rauru immediately caught on, reaching out to touch his wife using his other arm to grasp Link’s ankle from his bent position connecting them all together.

Link glanced down as he turned blue, the familiar glow and feeling of his body splitting apart and levitating into fine streaks. The same way he did whenever he teleported using the sheikah slate and purah pad during his time. The four of them had instantly teleported away from the palace to the Sonapan Shrine atop Satori Mountain.

Chapter 15: Bane of Evil

Chapter Text

Once they finally touched the mountain terrain, Link was at Sonia’s side using his ability to heal the rest of the wound. The mini plant petals twirled themselves as if they were stitches, sealing the gaping wound as it glowed until there was nothing left but a pink mark. Sonia let out a breath, Rauru kneeling to hug her relieved.

Zelda turned to overlook the valley letting out a sharp gasp. Link followed her gaze, his expression turning stoic. Hyrule Field was crawling with armies of monsters. They ranged from bokoblins, moblins, lizalfos, wizzrobes, skeletons, stalnox, hinoxes and terrifying lynels. They were bigger in size and there were so many swarming the entire land. There was no doubt they were spreading throughout the entire land of Hyrule itself. The blood moon shone above them, heightening their power as swirling malice scarred the dark sky. This couldn’t be happening…

“We need to get the sages,” Rauru declared, “this is war. The world is in danger.” Link glanced at his damaged master sword, feeling a sense of doubt. While he could easily get back his other weapons, what was he going to do with the damaged sacred blade? Surely it couldn’t be used to kill Ganondorf. While he had his secret stone and dragon transformation abilities, there was no telling whether that would be enough to finish Ganon.

As if sensing his plaguing thoughts, Sonia reached out to grasp Link’s mechanical arm. “You are worried that the damaged blade won’t be enough, am I correct?” Link nodded his head. She always had a way of seeing through people. The queen had a pensive look on her face as if contemplating. “You said you received the sword from the Deku Tree in Korok Forest.” Link nodded his head. “Maybe… it is still there?”

At this, Link raised his eyebrows in surprise as Zelda turned to face them, also curious. “The Master Sword exists in this time period?”

Sonia glanced at Rauru who nodded his head. “I think so,” the queen said. “The sword that resides in the forest is the Goddess Sword. This Master Sword you speak of must be the same sword.”

“I suppose we have no other choice,” Zelda shrugged. “We must make haste to Korok Forest.”

Rauru pulled out a Zonai device from his side, activating the vehicle as they hopped on. This would have to do for now as the king steered the four-wheeled transportation vehicle down the mountain. They evaded the hordes of monsters, heading straight toward Korok Forest. Upon seeing Zelda’s worrisome expression upon driving past the palace Sonia touched her shoulder.

“Mineru will be okay. She’s stronger than she looks.” Zelda nodded her head. Mineru had probably fled the palace among the rest of the Zonai. She turned her attention back to the task at hand as she and Sonia had to use their powers to momentarily freeze the Skeleton monsters in their path to Korok Forest. It was bigger than Zelda anticipated and much wilder.

The vehicle slowed to a stop as they came to a familiar place. It looked exactly the same as it was in their time, the only difference was the fact that the Deku appeared to be younger, not quite a sproutling, yet not quite the enormous tree she and Link were used to. Rather his height was shorter in stature as they stepped off the vehicle, Sonia and Rauru following them.

“Greetings, King Rauru and Queen Sonia,” the young Deku tree politely welcomed them. The attention of his eyes shifted upon Zelda and Link. Link noticed the same pedestal with the master sword of the past embedded within the stone. It appeared to be brand new, completely unscathed. His mechanical arm reached behind him to touch his own damaged master sword.

“What are you doing here?” The Great Deku tree berated. “This is not your time.”

“Great Deku Tree,” Zelda stepped forward. “I know that time travel is considered forbidden. Yet, the future is in grave danger.” The tree’s eyes flickered to Link who drew his damaged master sword. Link could sense the tree’s attention on his mechanical arm as well. “We had no choice. And now, the past is in danger.”

“You have already meddled with the past; don’t you realize the consequences?”

“We understand,” Zelda nodded her head. “Yet, we cannot do nothing. The Demon King will have full power over the future. The world will have fallen to darkness as will this one. Please… help us…” She pleaded, clasping her hands together. Link knelt onto one knee in front of the tree holding out his master sword. He laid it down onto the grass as the Great Young Deku Tree hummed.

“I suppose I cannot deny such a plea for help.” The tree lifted a branch to motion toward Link.

“An ancient hero of the Zonai once wielded the sword of the goddess during the beginning of time when the goddesses created it to aid the hero in dispelling the birth of darkness. The hero had been successful in his mission and the Goddesses put a curse upon the demise. The hero decided to put the sacred blade to rest in a place he knew that others wouldn’t seek. And this is that sacred ground where the goddess sword sleeps where I keep watch. The sword cannot awaken until a new incarnation worthy of the goddess is chosen. And you… young Hylian… I sense the spirit of the hero of legend resides within you. Tell me, what is your name?”

Link lifted his head, “Link,” he replied, “my name is Link. And this is Zelda,” he gestured to his friend.

“She is our descendant,” Sonia added, smiling.

“I see,” the Deku Tree let out a curious hum. “What is it that you need from me?”

“The Master Sword,” Link pushed the damaged blade closer. “Can you fix it?”

“I am afraid I cannot. Only the sword can heal itself with time.” Link blinked, gazing down at his blade surprised. “Yet, it can do more than heal. The sword will continue to gain strength if bathed in sacred power. The stronger that power, the more powerful the sword becomes. The potential of this fabled blade is limitless.”

“A sword that grows ever stronger…” Zelda mused with fascination. She let out a sigh, her fascination bleeding into worry. “We cannot wait for the sword to heal itself. There must be a faster way.”

Link picked up his damaged sword, a soft chime noise startling him as the goddess aka master sword of the past still embedded within the pedestal, the hilt began to glow blue. Zelda noticed the glowing, glancing between it and her friend.

“Link?”

The said Hylian blinked, lips parting in astonishment. He heard it clearly. The voice of the sword calling out to him. But this was the sword of the past… and he was from the future… there was no way he could… It pulsed once more, evoking a reaction out of the damaged blade in his mechanical palm. Link stared at his own sword and the other identical copy.

Seal me.

Was this even possible? Could he combine the master sword of the past and future together? He rose to his feet, deciding to follow the sword’s prompting. The others stared, watching in silence as Link lifted his damaged blade over the goddess sword in the pedestal. The damaged blade began to quiver, pulsing bright blue as Link let go of it, unable to take his gaze away from the sight of his damaged blade fusing with the goddess sword. The shape of the sword began to expand, glowing brightly white. He had to shield his eyes from the glare, as everyone else before it died down. Link stared; his brain speechless at the dazzling sight before him.

The master sword… was enhanced. The navy-blue guard of the hilt had expanded into a sharper claw-like point. The blade shone pure silver, longer than its original length with the tip glowing blue somewhat resembling the makeup of the Zonaite long sword. There were also green rune symbols inscribed along the fuller of the blade. He had never seen anything like that before, except for the typical Hyrule symbol near the hilt. Link didn’t need to know Zonai to decipher the rune symbols. It was clear as day to his mind.

Bane of Evil.

He could feel it, the sacred power radiating off the sword, beckoning him. Link reached forward over the pedestal, bending his knees as he grasped the hilt of the blade. A pillar of white light surrounded him as he drew the blade from stony ground. It let out a loud SHING. Its holy luster gleamed as he held the sword high in the air. Its god-like power was beyond comprehension. It didn’t scale to the first time he drew the blade before the calamity. Link could still feel the several pairs of eyes on him, staring in awe. Zelda had her hands to her mouth, wonderstruck. Even Link had no words to describe the glory of the sword. He never knew that it could do something like this. Now the Deku Tree’s words made sense. The power of this blade was limitless.

“Now you witness the limitless power of the sacred blade. Truly the work of a goddess,” the Deku Tree replied, also gazing at Link and the sword in amazement. “For you to be chosen to hold such power is of utmost honor, Hero.” Link held out the sword in front of him in holy reverence. “May you use it now to vanish the darkness once and for all.”

Chapter 16: Shrouded Darkness

Chapter Text

Link strapped the new master sword to his back knowing that it could no longer fit in the original scabbard. The group bid goodbye to the young Deku tree as they left the forest. Rauru requested to use Zelda’s Purah Pad, using the technology to contact Mineru and the other sages. They had aimed to gather at Hyrule Field where the plague of monsters roamed.

This was it. The battle they had been training themselves for. It was either now or nothing. None of them knew what they would expect ahead. The future was bleak. There was no telling what would happen. They could die in this battle. Link clenched his mechanical fist. If this is what it took to take down the Demon King once and for all then he’d do it. He’d sacrifice himself for the sake of this world. Glancing at Zelda beside him who mirrored his expression. He could tell that she felt the same.

They advanced ahead, using the Zonai vehicle that Rauru summoned. They made their way away from the forest and toward Hyrule Field, deciding to stand on the hill of Sanduin Ruins overlooking the desolate land. It was crazy how much the world could change in the span of a day. The once luscious green valley was now empty and barren, flames arcing into the sky. The destruction wreaked havoc around them. They waited until five familiar figures appeared in the distance. Link sighed in relief at the sight. There was no guarantee from Rauru that the other sages would show. It was a relief knowing that they were okay at least. Among them was Mineru riding an enormous construct. They hurried close until they joined them. Mineru had suffered a few burns, relating the incident at the castle and how she barely managed to flee the onslaught of monsters. She explained how the rest of the Zonai had fallen, except for her. Link could see the grave expression on Rauru’s face hearing that only he and his sister were the last of the remaining Zonai. It was a tragedy. The other sages also bore testimony of their fallen regions.

“The last free village in the Gerudo Desert has also fallen.”

His heart clenched. He wished he could change it, but it seemed that was fate. And the fate of the rest of the world was in danger. No, he couldn’t allow the rest of Hyrule to die, nor the remaining survivors. This world would be bathed in darkness forever. They had no choice but to fight the Demon King together.

Link bristled, cold dread settling over his skin. A familiar feeling. He turned his head sharply to see Ganondorf out in the distance of Hyrule field. Even from afar, he raised his hand into the air creating a blast of malice as his army of monsters expanded. There were too many of them. Link had never seen so many hordes of monsters all in one place. He swore there were over a hundred lynels too. Goddesses. This was blatant suicide. Rauru turned to face the army, raising his hand to command them all to brace themselves.

“Rise, rise my servants.” Link could hear Ganon clearly. His voice booming. “Sweep over Hyrule with the power I have granted you.” Ganon summoned a horse, one with armor made of gloom with a glowing red horn on its head. Technically Ganon possessed the triforce power and his abilities were heightened by the secret stone he had stolen. However, Link did not expect it to be this bad.

“Eliminate this kingdom and her allies!”

Holy Hylia. There was no way any of them could take on an army this massive. Ganon was charging on his horse, the army flooding toward them.

“Leave no survivors!!!” Ganon swung his blade, a red blast hurling toward them. Link raised the master sword and Zonai shield to protect himself. There was no way they could be able to— A blinding light deflected the blast. Link squinted his eyes at the glare, grunting as did the others beside him. They braced themselves against the shockwave. Link lifted his head up noticing the three familiar slender figures. The three dragons. They all had used their powers to deflect Ganon’s blast. Arcing their heads, they turned to face Ganon roaring. For a moment, Link thought that the tide of battle had changed and that they finally had the upper hand.

Unfortunately, Ganondorf was not one to be trifled with. He sent another surge of gloom, this time creating an enormous boar-like dragon monster entirely consumed by gloom. It was identical to the beast Link had seen before his one-hundred-year slumber. The Great Calamity. His fingers clenched around the hilt of his blade as the three dragons flew into the air to fight this monstrosity. They didn’t have the divine beasts in this era, but at least the dragons could fight the monstrous calamity. The four of them seemed to take their battle into the sky above. Link couldn’t imagine how this looked to any onlookers.

They turned, left with no choice but to face Ganon’s army. The sages’ secret stones began to glow as they rushed into the fray of battle. Zelda joined them, staying near King Rauru and Queen Sonia. Link found himself frozen, lifting his head to find Ganon dismounting his horse and walking straight toward him. Go figure. This was their fight alone. He couldn’t blame Ganon. Link was, after all, his greatest nemesis. If anyone was to take down Ganon himself, it would be him. The Hero of Legend. Of course, he’d start to kill Link first.

The Gerudo took a step forward, a heavy thud rumbling the ground. Link turned to face him, the rest of the battle falling away from them. It was him and Ganon alone. “All these weak cowards running rampant. It would’ve been more satisfying to overcome a worthy foe.” He regarded Link with contempt. Of course, he would consider Link worthless. The said hero scowled. “Regardless, I shall reshape this world as it was meant to be. I will crush any opposition. That is what a king must do,” his massive hand drew his demon blade from his scabbard. “Hyrule shall be shrouded in darkness. I will rule this world!”

Jeez, this man’s pride and greed were beyond Hylia’s grace. Ganon was not going to take over, not unless Link had anything to say about it.

“We shall see about that,” he reached behind his back to draw the master sword. It flashed a dazzling blue as Link held it up. “Your demise ends here, Ganondorf.”

Chapter 17: Crossroads of Destiny

Chapter Text

The darkness around him was impenetrable. Link couldn’t see anyone else. He supposed everyone would be fine since they weren’t alone. But he couldn’t worry about that, not when Ganon was stalking toward him. It appeared as if the gloom was all that was left, encompassing his surroundings. He never fought an opponent this large in stature.

Ganon swung the gloom blade, Link raising the master sword to deflect it. It made a metallic clang as he forced himself away to evade the sharp slice. While Ganon’s attacks were potent and heavy, Link had one advantage here: speed. Due to his smaller size, he was able to evade the deadly blows that would certainly kill him with one strike. His agile body allowed him to flip backwards and slide under Ganon’s feet to strike his back. The Gerudo howled as the master sword sliced across his skin. Link grinned, bending his knees into a stance as he watched Ganon lift his head.

A cold chuckle escaped Ganondorf’s lips, clenching his fist that wasn’t holding his blade. “Heh, heh, heh… What a feeling,” his sadistic grin made Link feel queasy. It was as if the wound on his back was nothing. "The thrill of battle, that feeling that surges through your veins.” This man was sick beyond comprehension. “And I am not even nearing the limits of my power!” Ganon raised a fist as he created another surge of gloom. The secret stone edge on the crown on his forehead began to glow as Link gritted his teeth bracing himself as Ganon transformed. His hair grew into long malice-like tendrils glowing crimson, malice spreading over his body. The same transformation he had seen when Ganon nearly killed Sonia at the palace. So, this was the Demon King’s transformation when he used the power of the secret stone. His nails were longer, the whiteness of his eyes pure black while his pupils were sharp like a snake. Even his teeth were sharper than usual and blackened. There were even horns that sprouted from his head. Link had never seen anything so horrid.

“Enjoy these final moments. I will be taking far more than your arm this time.” Link was rendered speechless. How??? How did this… Ganon of the past knows that his future self took Link’s arm? Link clenched his mechanical fingers tightly over the hilt of his master sword. He supposed it didn’t matter. The time loop was probably already messed up since he and Zelda traveled to the past and… besides….  Perhaps Ganon could detect whether something had once been infected by malice. Link wouldn’t put it past him.

Link began to panic as multiple holograms of Ganon appeared. Oh Hylia… He jumped back as they surged at him. No, he couldn’t back down now, he wouldn’t. That’s when Link saw them, the other sages including Rauru, Sonia and Zelda. They surrounded him. He wasn’t alone.

“We’ll take care of the phantoms,” Rauru shouted. “You focus on Ganondorf.” Link nodded his head as the sages charged at the phantom holograms of Ganon. Link turned to face the real Ganon, using his good hand to tap his secret stone earring. This was it; he closed his eyes momentarily as he channeled the energy and power of the secret stone into his body. His body began to glow, his hair becoming wilder as the triforce of courage flashed over his mechanical palm. This only seemed to enrage Ganondorf further.

Ganon’s speed was much faster in his amplified state, leaving Link no choice but to rely on his own amplified abilities. He stretched his mechanical arm like a whip to create a larger slicing arc with his master sword. While at the same time, Link used his other arm to erect a thorny barrier of vines to block Ganon’s blade. While it didn’t hold its weight for long, it was enough to get Link moving to evade the blow. However, Ganon was quick to recover. Link felt the blade nick his shoulder. The hero yowled at the stinging pain, clutching onto his shoulder. He immediately used his healing ability to heal the wound before the malice could infect it.

Jeez, he needed to be more careful. One strike like this to the heart then he’d be done for. Link drew his zonai shield with his good arm, deciding to make use of it. This would certainly help to soften direct blows. Everytime his master sword clashed against the massive Gerudo, it gleamed a dazzling white and blue. Ganon shrieked as if repulsed by such purifying light and energy.

Every blow that Ganon landed upon him, Link was able to heal immediately due to his amplified power. Thank goodness, otherwise he would’ve been corrupted many times over. The master sword didn’t hinder its glow with every strike. And with every slash Ganon poised, Link deflected as fast as lightning. Even with all the blows Link landed, Ganon still taunted him. He created another blast of gloom spiraling around him as it exploded. Link used the light of the master sword and from his triforce to create a barrier around himself. He momentarily moved the master sword from his mechanical arm to his other arm as he used the robotic arm to stretch and maintain a hold of Ganon. At least, this part wouldn’t be infected as readily. The triforce glowing over his mechanical palm prevented the gloom from spreading over his arm. His hand held Ganon’s wrist down in a vice-like grip, providing him the opportunity to command vines to twirl around the man’s body. The Gerudo tried to fend off the vines attempting to squeeze his body. Shock wave after shock wave of gloom hurled at Link as he angled his body to dodge them, whilst still maintaining his hold on Ganon. His mechanical arm began to glow brighter as Ganon let out a bloody yowl. Link took the opportunity to shoot himself forward, using the stretchy ability of his mechanical arm to send himself flying at Ganon, aiming the master sword as he brought it down over the Demon King’s chest. A critical hit.

Something akin to a mixture of blood and malice spurted from the wound. Link released his hold upon Ganon, stepping back to watch him clutch at the wide bleeding slash over his chest. Good. While Link had suffered several bleeding gashes, he ignored the stinging pain. There was no way Ganon would be able to recover from that one. The man’s body curled back, bent at an odd angle as his mouth opened in agony.

“I will yet… rule this land…” Ganon gurgled, clenching his fists despite the agonizing pain from his critical wound. “You will not stop me!” He lifted his body up, stretching an arm above him. Was he dying? Link was confused. Even in his dying moments Ganon was still trying to resist. “A mere mortal… will not stand in my way!” Ganon then reached forward a hand to grasp the secret stone from his crown as he tore it from his head. Link gaped at the sight.

“My body… my mind… I’ll sacrifice it all to destroy you!”

What was he doing? Link narrowed his eyes, not yet lowering his guard.

“... and cast his world into eternal night!” It wasn’t until Ganon held the secret stone above his mouth did Link realized what was happening.

“NO!” Unfortunately, it was too late. Ganon shoved his entire fist into his mouth, swallowing the secret stone. Link stepped back in horror, jaw agape. How??? How did Ganon know about this??? Did he figure it out? Had he been watching Link this whole time from the shadows?

The hero could do nothing but watch as Ganon transformed before his eyes. His body began to explode with tendrils of malice swirling around him like an expanding tornado. The last thing Link heard was malicious laughter followed by a loud demonic roar as a blast of gloom blinded his vision. By the time he could see again, his body was snatched off the ground and into the jaws of a dragon.

Chapter 18: Hero’s Fate

Chapter Text

Now it made sense. Ganon had been spying on him all this time. That was how he learned the power of dragonification by secretly watching Link transform. And judging from Sonia's secret stone he stole. Link had an inkling of suspicion Ganon’s knowledge had been linked between his past and future self. Hence the reason he knew about his arm. While Ganon couldn’t travel through time himself, the time secret stone linked his knowledge from the past and future. And now, he was utilizing that knowledge here in the past to destroy Link and all of Hyrule. And if everything was destroyed here, there was no future to go back to. No… no… he couldn’t let this happen. History couldn’t be altered in this way.

Link winced, struggling against the sharp teeth holding bound. They were threatening to crush him. He needed to get out lest he be crushed to death. The dragonified Ganondorf was soaring in the air, thousands of feet away from the ground. If he leapt at this height, he’d certainly die considering he didn’t have his paraglider. Yet, Link wasn’t worried about that. “AGGGH!” He pushed with all his might, his triforce flashing sending a thorny vine into Ganon’s jaw. It did the trick. The dragon was bothered by the nuisance opening its mouth as Link fell midair. He splayed his arms and legs out reaching to tug his secret stone earring from his earlobe, dislodging the metal rim as he swallowed the stone.

The hero of legend transformed right then and there mid-air, thousands of feet above the ground. If this was how it was going to be. This power would be his last resort. Surprisingly, the master sword, instead of falling, actually fused itself at the tip of his dragon tail. Link angled his body, noticing the sharp sword-like tip. He could feel it, its power amplified further inside his body. Interesting. Perhaps he could use his tail like a sword.

Master. That voice, it was familiar. He had heard it before. It was that same voice pulsing from the master sword. Now it was within him, inside his own mind.

How??? Link blinked, thinking. He didn’t train himself to use the master sword’s ability while in dragon form. This was unfamiliar territory.

You are not alone.

Link stared at his tail that was now glowing. Holy Hylia! He could freely talk with the spirit contained within the master sword through telepathy while in dragon form? This was a startling revelation.

My power will guide you.

An enraged roar forced his attention to the dragonified Demon King. Right, there was still a task at hand. He could do this. Ganon charged at him at unmatched speed, faster than they could in their original forms. Being in the air gave them a greater advantage. Link couldn’t imagine what this looked like to the world down below. He also didn’t see the other three dragons; they must still be fighting the calamity. He angled his body to narrowly avoid the snapping jaws. Link slithered his body to arc above him. Ganon’s dragon size still towered over him. It was monstrous.

Don’t doubt, he could hear the voice chime. He may be overpowered, but he must have a weak spot.

That’s right. Link learned from the other dragons that they could die while in dragon form. It wasn’t from age since dragons could technically live forever. However, they could still be injured critically and die from severe damage. He needed to locate Ganon’s weak spot.

The Demon Dragon let out a ferocious roar, blasts of gloom shooting toward Link. Thankfully, Link was able to gracefully maneuver his body to avoid getting hit, charging directly at Ganon. He stretched forth his mechanical arm that expanded in size. Even in dragon form he could use it like a weapon. He drove his claws against Ganon’s side. It didn’t create much damage, but it was enough to let Ganon yowl. Ganon’s scales were rather thick. He needed to attack his underbelly. That was one spot that Link knew was softer than the rest of a dragon’s body.

He created vines to disperse the blasts of gloom, flying closer to Ganon’s slender body as he noticed gaping intrusions with multiple eyeballs in the middle. These must be the wounds on Ganon’s body. Link used his claws to dig into the flesh as Ganon began to flail, shrieking in pain. His claws tore the flesh apart as he bucked himself off to evade the gloom hands and claws that tried to snatch him. Link sent a blast of light and vines to twist themselves around Ganon’s body holding him bound as Link seized the opportunity to tear at the wounds on Ganon’s back, piercing the eyeballs and clawing at his underbelly. Ganon writhed in the vine-like hold, snarling gloom hands finally maintaining their hold upon Link. Link growled, trying to resist as Ganon reached forward to bite his side. Link yowled in pain as he could feel the claws and teeth sinking into flesh.

Master. The voice echoed in his mind despite the agonizing pain erupting throughout his body. The two of them were clawing and tearing at one another, dragon blood and scales slipping off their bodies. The secret stone.

Link tilted his head to see Ganon’s secret stone embedded in his dragon head, similar to Link’s on one of his horns. Realization struck him. That’s it! The source of Ganon’s power, the secret stone. Link swerved his tail, angling the sword-like tip to slash at Ganon’s secret stone. It pierced through the stone like glass, creating a wide crack. Ganon growled in response, letting out an agonizing sound. In response, Ganon’s claws dug deeper into Link’s body, a pair of claws raking down Link’s chest and soft underbelly. He hissed in pain, ignoring the gush of warmth pooling from his chest, the wound deep and bleeding heavily. He roared, slashing his tail one more time before raising it high and driving the tip and entire blade into the center. His sword glowed a brilliant light. The blade had not only pierced itself through the secret stone, but also through dragon Ganondorf’s brain. Link drove his tail out, watching as he released Ganon. The secret stone exploded, along with the frontal lobe of the demon dragon’s head, splattered blood, brains and scales shooting around him. It was a horrendous sight. There was no way Ganon would be able to survive a blow like that. Every ounce of his body began to bleed as he let out a tormented scream. Twirling up into the reddened sky, the demon dragon let out his final breath before his whole body imploded in a blinding explosion. It was enough to cover the entire sky of Hyrule. Link had never witnessed anything so bright.

Once it dispersed, the red sky fell away to its normal color. Hues of cerulean blue and gold marked the horizon. Link awed at the heavenly sight. Hyrule was ethereal.

Master.... Master... Link could barely recognize the voice calling out toward him as he could feel the wind rushing past his scales. He was falling now, exhaustion overwhelming him, feeling disoriented from the loss of blood. It assaulted him like a mallet to the head. He gazed down at the deep gash across his chest and underbelly.

Master! Too weak to summon enough energy and willpower heal or to transform himself back, Link’s eyelids closed against his will. He fell from the sky to his impending death. This was it; he had done it. Link had finally defeated Ganondorf. He could finally rest in peace. The world was saved thanks to him. His duty was fulfilled.

Chapter Text

He could hear them, a flurry of voices. Tantalizing pain made him flinch. By Hylia’s grace he wasn’t dead.

“Link!” He gasped awake, blinded by light. It took him a few moments to finally calm down. Zelda’s warm hands were touching his shoulder, gently holding him. He turned his head noticing he was lying on the ground, surrounded by Rauru, Sonia and the rest of the sages. Above him he could see the three dragons.

Had he done it? He glanced down at his chest to find that his chest was wrapped up in bandages, the redness soaking the white linen. He forgot about Ganon’s claws that dug through his chest.

“Oh Link,” tears leaked from Zelda’s eyes. She reached forward to pull him into a gentle hug, mindful of his injuries. “You did it.” That was all the clarification he needed. Ganon was gone for good. The world had been saved. Link closed his eyes, allowing his body to relax in relief. Finally.

“We did it,” he weakly corrected. Sure, he killed Ganondorf, but he couldn’t take all the credit. The others helped him, they faced Ganon’s army and the master sword helped to guide him. It was their strength that helped him win this battle. It gave him a reason to fight. He grunted, opening his eyes to find the master sword near his side lying on the ground. It had split in two, the sword of the past and his damaged sword of the future,  except the damaged blade was fully healed. Its fusion with the sword of the future had healed it. Link was grateful the sword of the future still had the flashing zonai symbol, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to decipher which sword belonged to the past or future.

The three dragons must’ve caught him before he could hit the ground and the sages used their powers to transform him back. It seemed they were all injured with varying degrees of wounds. At least none of them were dead. Yet, Link was too weak to use his own power to heal himself. He succumbed to fatigue.

The next time he woke up in a bed. The bandage around his chest was fresh as if it had recently been cleaned. The pain was nothing but a lingering sting. He sat up, pressing a hand to the side of his face.

“You’re awake,” he shifted, noticing Sonia kneeling at his bedside. Beside her was Zelda and Rauru. Rauru smiled at him, Zelda reaching over to hug him. Link could see several bandages wrapped around Zelda’s arms and legs as well.

“You two should get a warm meal and some water to rest,” Sonia beamed. “You need it.” Link obliged, allowing Rauru to help him out of bed as he and Zelda followed Sonia to the kitchen. Obviously, the kitchen was still in the process of being repaired since the palace had sustained some damage from the onslaught of monsters. The zonai constructs were hard at work to repair the gaping hole and fallen pillars. Link sat at the table alongside Zelda with Rauru and Sonia as they were fed a nutritious meal to fill their bellies. It seemed the rest of the company was here as well, including the sages and Mineru. Link smiled as he dug into the zonai feast. The hero couldn’t remember when he had a peaceful meal like this. The air felt different, lighter. There was no looming doom of darkness. They could finally exist without having to worry about their lives possibly ending. That burden was lifted. Link never felt such peace.

After the feast, Rauru and Sonia threw a small celebration. Even though Link and Zelda took it easy not to overstrain their still healing bodies. They enjoyed the zonai festivities. They deserved it, after all, to live freely. Rauru had gifted Link and Zelda zonai earrings while Sonia handed them special custom zonai made necklaces for the both of them to keep forever. They were forever grateful for such gifts. Although Zelda wanted to pay them back, Sonia insisted that the defeat of Ganon was enough.

When it drew late Zelda and Link retreated to their rooms to sleep. That night, both of them slept soundly without a single worry. After the next day, Link returned the master sword of the future back to its original place in Korok Forest, keeping his own blade from his time. The next few days they remained in Rauru and Sonia’s palace overseeing the restoration process until their wounds fully healed.

Here, they found themselves in the garden. Rauru and Sonia turned to face him, nodding their heads.

“We have greatly enjoyed your stay with us,” Sonia began, “and it would be nice to have you tarry for the remainder of your days. However, we know that you must return back to your time.”

Link knew this would happen sooner or later. They couldn’t stay forever. They still had a home to return to, among the many friends they left behind. Though the Hylian knight didn’t quite know what to expect. While the future was saved, since they defeated Ganon in the past. There was no telling how exactly the future changed because of this event. If one thing Link knew with surety, was the fact that the future would be better than the world they left.

Zelda touched her secret stone letting out a sigh. “But…”

“I believe you’re ready,” Sonia answered as if reading the princess’ thoughts. “You have the power to do so.” Link glanced at Zelda, noticing her nod her head with determination. She had come a long way and now mastered her abilities. While she had accidentally sent them both through time using the secret stone, this time he had no doubt that she could do it intentionally.

“You may keep the secret stones,” Rauru added. “Consider it a gift alongside your jewelry. Who knows, perhaps you’ll need them.”

The tears escaped Zelda’s eyes as she smiled feebly. Link felt the same emotion welling up inside him as he and the princess turned to bid goodbye to King Rauru and Queen Sonia. They hugged each other fiercely. In a way, they were not only parental figures but friends they had grown close to.

“We will miss you. Please take care.”

“The same goes to you princess,” Sonia beamed, “and you Link,” she addressed. “Take care.” Rauru lifted his arm to show his approval as Link smiled at the sight. He reached out to clasp Zelda’s hand as they nodded at each other. Zelda touched her secret stone, calling forth its power. She focused her mind with intense clarity voicing her desire.

Let us return.

Her powers answered her plea, a bright glow illuminating from the stone as a warm feeling spread over Zelda and Link through their conjoined hands. It felt like basking in sunshine. The two of them watched as the world fell away from them. For a few moments they were in some other plane of existence, a nothingness of white. Until… their feet landed upon soft ground. Link opened his eyes, finding himself in Hyrule Field. He released Zelda’s hand as he turned. Sure enough, there was Hyrule Castle as they knew it. The only difference, it appeared to be restored as if nothing had happened to it. There was no evidence it had been torn into the sky. The sky wasn’t red, and there was not a single sight of a monster.

“Princess Zelda.” The said princess turned around upon hearing her name.

“Link!” The hero followed suit, the two of them noticing familiar friends down at the bottom of the grassy hill. They gasped, overcome with tears of happiness. It wasn’t the sages of their time, but the original champions as well. Their old friends that had died during the calamity. They were here too, alive.

“The strangest thing has happened,” Sidon stepped forward. “After you guys disappeared and Hyrule Castle rose into the air and the world was plagued with never ending darkness for days. We thought all hope was lost. Until one day, it all ended. Monsters disappeared off the land. Everything returned to its normal state and the champions,” Sidon pressed a fist to his chest. “They returned to the living.” The never-ending gratitude was exploding on Sidon’s face. “You brought my sister back. It was as if the calamity never happened. I do not understand what happened, but whatever the two of you did. You saved the world.”

“Good job, little guy,” Daruk patted him heavily on the back, Yunobo giving him a thumbs up. For the first time, Link even saw gratitude on Ravali’s face as he bowed before him.

“You did it,” Riju nodded.

Link chuckled softly as Zelda wiped at her tears of happiness. Oh, they had a crazy story to tell. Although that could come another time. The knight and the princess were overcome with joy to be reunited with their old and new friends. They joined together in an enormous circle, hugging.

“No way!” Tulin gasped, his feathers grasping Link’s knee. “You got a secret stone too!” He pointed to Link’s secret stone earring. The young Rito’s eyes bubbled with curiosity.

“Do tell, Little Bird,” Urbosa addressed the princess. “What kind of outfit are the two of you wearing? I have never seen anything like it.” Zelda chuckled, slowly explaining their wild journey of time travel to the Zonai time period to their friends while Link turned to show off to Tulin what abilities he possessed with the secret stone. The Rito was fascinated by the display of plants.

“You have a new arm!” Link could sense Sidon and Mipha’s gazes on him as both of them leaned over to study his mechanical arm.

“Amazing, dear friend!” While Link would’ve been glad to have his original arm back, he wouldn’t have traded it for such a cool new arm like this. Besides, he could do much more with it than his original arm. He stretched it out as Mipha, Sidon and Tulin gaped in awe. He then heard it, the familiar voice. His sword pulsed within his scabbard offering its gratitude and praise. Link reached behind his back to gently pat it.

The hero paused suddenly as his skin tingled, sensing the presence of three familiar beings. Cerulean blue eyes lifted themselves to the sky to notice the three zonai dragons circling them above. He smiled, reaching out a hand.

Chosen hero, you have done well. The Goddesses are well pleased. Even in this form, he heard them clearly. Hylia’s grace will bless you forever.

He grinned returning his attention to his friends. Link could feel the master sword chiming behind him. Ah yes, he was truly blessed beyond words. The world was finally at peace. They could live their lives as they were meant to be. Yet, Link knew that if any challenge should face them in many years to come. They could do it together. They had come so far.  After all, he was never alone. They were never alone.
