Work Text:

“shit,” satoru whispers as he watches suguru with that new transfer. what does he see in her anyway? he’s always gushing about ‘oh, she’s so pretty this, oh she’s so my type that’—what does she have that he didn’t?

satoru was handsome, satoru was his type.

they were always together. during class, after class. while hanging out with shoko, while hanging out just the two of them. before she transferred, he and satoru were best friends. best friends who did everything together. playing games, eating, studying (or, trying to), walking home. now, all he does is spend time with that new girl. satoru leaned back in his chair and put his arms behind his head.

“satoru,” shoko moved her chair beside satoru’s. “you’re sulking. what’s got you upset this time?” she rested her head on the table beside her, staring at satoru. satoru remained quiet, watching suguru wordlessly. shoko looked at his point of view and snorted. “you’re jealous?” this got satoru’s attention.

“me? jealous? no way.” he shrugged and looked down at shoko, who was drifting off to sleep.

“yeah, you. jealous.”

“i’m not jealous. what makes you say that?”

“it’s the way you look at him.” at this, shoko put her arms on the table and dozed off.

“i’m not jealous…” satoru mumbled to himself and glanced back at suguru.

suguru and the girl were now sitting closer than before, her hands twirling the stray bit of hair suguru chose to keep out. ‘it’s more comfortable this way.’ he would say. he was looking into her eyes as she spoke about god knows what, and it was getting on satoru’s nerves. “i’m not jealous.” he reassured himself in his head. over and over again. but the way suguru slipped his hand onto her thighs, and the way she giggled (obnoxiously loudly) at this, made something tick.

satoru got up and made his way over to the pair, appearing stoic. no, joyful. he stood in front of them and stared down at suguru. this made suguru look up and make eye contact. “what?” suguru whispered. “nothing. just wanted to say hi,” satoru wanted to say a lot more than hi. “i’m going back to the dorm, see you there.” satoru waved and made his way out of his classroom. as he was leaving, he could hear a loud, “what’s wrong with him?” from the girl. if it were suguru, it would be okay. but the girl? oh. hell no.

yet, as pissed as he was, he didn’t turn back and beat the girl up. he wanted to swear, scream, and shout at the girl to get away from suguru. but would that backfire? yeah. in a lot of ways. suguru would never talk to him again. satoru would do anything for suguru. even if it meant not spending as much time with him. was he jealous? “yeah. maybe i am jealous.” satoru mumbled to himself as he put his hands in his pocket and walked back to his shared dorm. with suguru.

the evening was dawning, and the weather was way too hot for the start of summer. summer vacation would start in a week, and all would be peaceful for the next month. the girl would be gone, and suguru would be his for the time. as he approached their dorm, he unzipped his jacket and threw it onto his bed, clad in nothing but a vest now. he went to turn on their air conditioner, which, according to satoru, was the “best creation of mankind!”, and thank the gods, it turned on. he took a seat in front of the glorious object and relaxed.

his mind was empty. what would he think about now?

suguru? that girl?

probably suguru.

“god… what is wrong with me?” he rested his arms on the floor behind him and leaned back. fine. maybe satoru loved him. maybe more than as a best friend. maybe in a way that he would do everything for suguru. if suguru wanted him to kill himself, he would. even if he was the strongest, even if he had responsibilities, he would.

he thought about him the whole time he was alone.

until someone opened the door. he knew it was suguru.

“what’s up with you today?” he stood in the door, a scowl on his face.

“what’s up with me? what?”

“what’s wrong with you?”

at this, satoru turned around. suguru’s hair was disheveled, he looked like he ran the way home. “answer me.” he was breathless. satoru was breathless looking at him. “i said, what the fuck is wrong with you?” satoru didn’t answer.

suguru walked in and pulled him up by his collar. “you were staring at us like we were doing something wrong. what were we doing wrong? huh?”

“you like her. don’t you?” satoru murmured.

suguru blinked. this was sudden. “uh. yeah? why?” he didn’t look angry anymore. just confused.

satoru pulled out of suguru’s grip and fixed his clothes. “i see the way you look at her,” he looked at suguru, who was now staring at satoru’s face. “and what about it?”

“i wish you looked at me like that.”

no one spoke for a minute. they were just staring at each other. yet, suguru’s face morphed into disgust. “dude. you cant just say something like tha–”

“but its the truth.”

they stayed silent. “i came to say (new girl) is staying back for the summer.” at this, satoru tensed. “what? why?”

“she said she wanted to spend more time with me.”

“…”

“i think she likes me.”

“…”

satoru turned and left. she likes him? of course she does. the fucking audacity of her. she was taking away his best friend from him. and she’s so innocent when she does it too! she knows how satoru feels about suguru, he admitted it to her himself. yeah, to her. she takes that information and turns it into something she could work on. “i cant do this anymore.”
