Work Text:

Spoke was not a very peaceful person. How could he be, in a world as violent and ruthless as this one? Every instinct he had told him to kill, to lie, to cheat. He was an exploiter, a manipulator, a God.

But Spoke was tired of that life. It hurt him to look back, to see the irreversible damage he had caused. In his path for power, he had ruined everything he had worked so hard for, even if the lies he told were meant to fool himself.

“I know you’re there.” Spoke said, his pointed ears twitching as a soft sound carried towards him. The gentle clanking of armor as someone attempted to sneak up on him. Normally, Spoke would be alarmed. After all, he was armorless, sitting down in the empty field with the grass tickling his void colored skin.

But he could hear the footsteps of the one behind him. They were cautious and timid, like a scared animal approaching a stranger for the first time.

“Planet~” Spoke said, his voice drawn out like a song. He tilted his head back, his pupil-less eyes fixed on the person behind him.

Planet, his teammate, the only one who was willing to take him in.

Planet walked over to Spoke, their footsteps only a sliver louder now that Spoke had noticed them. They sat down beside him, crossing their legs, wincing just a bit as the metal scratched.

“You know it’s pointless to sneak up on me.” Spoke hummed. He pulled his head back, watching the cloudy form of his companion shift ever so slightly. It was easy for others to miss in all of the fighting. The way their head shrunk when uncertain or threatened, their body puffing up when embarrassed, the edges of their form swaying when pleased. Spoke watched Planet puff, the edges of their cloudy body wiggling despite the embarrassment.

“You’re getting better at it, though.” Spoke continued. Planet’s form returned to its usual size, the gentle wiggles moving slightly faster. “Hardly heard you if it wasn’t for the lack of wind.”

Planet beamed. Quite literally, too. The clouds of their body shone bright, as if the sun was peeking out from within them. Another feature that Spoke had noticed. Their body would change shape along with their mood, and sometimes colors as well. A rolling thunder of anger, the clear blue of serenity, the warm tangerine of hope.

Somehow, the person with the inability to speak was the most expressive one Spoke had ever met.

Silence overtook them, the pair staring into each others’ eyes. Hands that drew blood tangled together in a gentle embrace. Spoke closed his eyes, head falling towards a protected shoulder, cool metal soothing his aching mind. He was rattled with guilt, but he would never say it.

There were many words unspoken between them, one keeping secrets, the other unable to release them. Words were a weapon, used to puppeteer the world and mold it to his liking. But here with his teammate, his friend, Spoke never needed to use them.
