Its a Date

Summary:

Drifter scrambles to get another bento box ready to send off with the Guardian for Eris, only to find he's out of boxes. A quick trip out of the Annex should solve that though...

Notes:

Quick little "I cant sleep" idea I thought was nice. This takes place before Episode Heresy, Act 3 of Episode Revenant (I think) as we're doing the little bento quest involving Drifter and Eris. It was really sweet and simple so it stuck in my mind. If you missed it I'd recommend looking for all the text blurbs.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Drifter moved across his little nook of the Annex like a whirlwind. Arms moved independently lifting up stacks of papers and overturned helmets and half broken pottery filled with jade coins. He’d asked The Guardian to come see him about five minutes ago, which meant they’d be there within the next three; he knew they’d love another chance to get something shiny. He’d allowed himself to get lost in thought after the call though only to remember at the last possible second that he didn't have a meal ready for Eris when the guardian arrived.

The food was no problem, he’d gotten pretty good at the prep and the packaging but the finishing touch was the box itself and for the thousands of lives he had, the Drifter couldn't find one bento box. He thought about contacting The Guardian again but they didn't tend to get calls mid warp. As he lifted up the same tool tray for a third time he grumbled and made peace with his other idea.

Carefully, Drifter stepped past his threshold and hung a gentle right. Past the brick walls and the robo dog who cocked it’s head at him, then up the stairs. The first flight was quick but as he passed two Hunters he gave a big smile and picked up pace, he felt so out of place making a public appearance.

The sounds of the open area started to pick up and Drifter prepared himself for one more sharp left past the arch. He felt like he was home free; he’d slap down some glimmer, lay on a bit of charm and score some boxes from the ramen shop. It’d be a quick trip back, maybe one or two more awkward waves but it’d be mostly painless.

“What are you doing, Germaine?” Drifter felt his hair stand on end, even the dead fur on his shoulders seemed to perk up. He threw on a smile and turned to see her.

“Moondust, fancy that!” The woman seemed to stare through him, waiting for a response. Drifter dropped the big smile for something more subtle and began to talk with his hands more than his mouth “figured I should stretch my legs a little is all.”

“Is that so?” She was a sphinx, like usual. Eris and Drifter were friendly, but she often refused to allocate patience for his schemes; it didn't matter the manor or the level of unscrupulousness.

“Yeah, tell you the truth though I think I was walking with my stomach more than my boots,” He pointed behind him with his thumb “might grab a quick bite.”

“How fortunate, I was about to do the same. Would you mind if I joined you?” Now the mask fell away completely and the man was left a bit confused.

“You serious?”

“I do still require food, something I believed you’d become well acquainted with recently.”

“Well of course, still…can't exactly picture you grabbing a bite here in The Tower."

“It is a rare occasion but a pleasant one, especially with company. You haven't answered my question.” Drifter found himself recentering, trying to drop the Gambit officiate persona and just be him .

“Sure, ol’ Drifters got time and a bit of glimmer.”

“No need,” Eris flashed a few glimmer cubes and a half smile. Drifter felt his shoulder fall a little and he gave a genuine smile and chuckle; Eris loved to mess with him and he loved it too.

“And here I thought you’d invested in nothing but books.”

“Consider it thanks for your meals, a chance to spend more time amongst my books.” The two took their seats and continued back and forth for a little while as the Guardian arrived to an empty Annex before quickly leaving to get into a Crucible match before it got too late.

Notes:

I don't think this counts as being back, it just seems better than screenshotting my google doc and posting it around. Also, I play a lot of Destiny
